Been watching Linus for more than 10 years now and boy has that whole entity evolved throughout time... Just wanted to share my appreciation for what Linus and the whole company at this point is doing since It has been extremely helpful in my life so far. I've always been interested in computers but despite following a tech-oriented educational path I never really got into places where they would teach us anything really. So it was me, my spare time and a couple of local tech enthusiasts just figuring it all out. Then I got my access to internet and everything got way easier lol. When I found Linus on youtube I already had a basic grasp on most fundamental topics but it was very shallow with a lot of holes and partially misunderstood. With the help of numerous LTT videos (watched literally everything back then) in the span of 7-8 years I learned A LOT while also being entertained. Following my university graduation (did electrical engineering) and obtaining a couple of certificates from online courses and mostly carried by my passion and the things I've learned and done on my own at home throughout the years I landed a junior system administrator job position at a leading local tech company. Fast forward 2 years I'm now administrating quite an infrastructure and working on many diverse projects. I believe I owe Linus and the whole team a big THANK YOU for educating me while being very entertaining all these years and most importantly for keeping that spark which is very essential to one's desire to learn and improve and seek new adventures instead of being scared of change. Would be interested in reading your stories of how LTT was part of your career path and how they've influenced you and your life! Thank you!

Greetings to all! So I have been working on something like this for awhile. First off I want to build a motherboard from scratch. Now before all the negative people start blowing up the comments section about how "You can't do this" or "Its not feasible", I know this is going to take time and money. I GET THAT! What I want to know is 1. What is needed to make a custom motherboard in a specific design and size (I need it to fit inside a tube smaller then a mac pro trash can but bigger then a water bottle, Thats for width and height but for length I'm thinking between 10" - 14".) 2. I need it to have a modern day CPU (Intel) along with a GPU (Maybe one from a macbook pro, if you have ever seen one) and also laptop ram or SO-DIM (I think thats the technical term for it.) I will worry about cooling later. 3. Through all this I want to learn how to make and build a motherboard and understand how it works! So time for what I have found on my adventure! I know you can use sights like this to make small PCB'S: https://easyeda.com But the problem with that is I have no idea what half the stuff on a motherboard means and does. (Hence why I have number 3.) So I need you guys to lead me and help me. I have a place to design it, I have the time, I have the money, Now I just need you guys to lead me in the right direction! Hopefully you guys will have fun with this as I hope to as well! -wiredbrother P.S (I am a engineer I create custom cases. I have been designing a new type of computer and it should be very cool. One of the things it will include is a flexible screen. Anyways I am off, See you guys soon!)

Hello guys, I'm in a bit of a conundrum, I am in the process of getting hired to offer technical support for a company that mostly works with Mac computers. The problem is that I have never touched a Mac in my life and I really need to learn about it. So, my questions to you are: Is there any comprehensive guide to learning the ins and outs of MacOS? Also is there any way to create a virtual machine in either Linux or Windows so I can actually use the OS (I learn best by actually using the software opposed to reading about it)? Is there any way I can make a Hackintosh with my specs? My PC specs are as follows: - GIGABYTE B450 AORUS ELITE - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - SSD ADATA XPG Gammix S11 Pro 512GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 M.2 2280 - Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT PULSE - HyperX Predator Black 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Dual Channel Kit

I am looking to expand my knowledge on servers in work environments so I was wondering how to contact my school IT department to see if I could learn from them after school or during break periods like lunch since I have found no answers online. Any answers would help. Thank you

Over the last few years I've become decently versed in javascript, specifically in nodejs. Ive been considering learning C++ as a next step but is it worth it? What advantages (other than speed) does it have?

I'm curious if there is an updated set of resources to learning/advancing in Clojure since the last time that I looked for such a thing. I've been using the mid-2010s resources on it mostly (i.e. Clojure for the Brave and True and the like). Anyone have a more refreshed list on the latest and greatest in Clojure resources?

Russian Sound Inventory 1st Post For the sake of ease, I will include the "non-Linguistic" method of explaining the sounds as well as providing the IPA of each vowel and consonant (they will be wrapped in a parenthesis). Since I am at the beginning of the book, I will not delve too deep into Allophony, merging, etc etc. Maybe the book will cover that later. I don't wish to jump ahead for my own good as well as anyone who may be reading this. Anyways... first I'll break them down into four groups, from easiest to say/remember to the hardest. I'll try to come up with image templates later on instead of relying on the very limited range of our editors (no BBCode SUCKS), but for now, please stick with me. Group 1: (Capital) (Small) (Pronunciation) (IPA) А а | [a] as in father (/a/) K к | [k] as in kangaroo (/k/ or /kʲ/) М м | [m] as in map or man (/m/ or /mʲ/) О о | [o] as in bottle *1 (/o/) Т т | [t] as in tan or tool (/t/ or /tʲ/) Now Group 2 will contain letters that look like English letters and you might try to pronounce them the same, but they aren't pronounced the same at all. Group 2: (Capital) (Small) (Pronunciation) (IPA) В в | [v] as in vet (/v/ or /vʲ/) Е е | [ye] as in yes (/je/, / ʲe/ or /e/) Н н | [n] as in never (/n/ or /ɲ/) Р р | [r] as in error *2 (/r/ or /rʲ/) С с | [ s ] as in sit (/s/ or /sʲ/) У у | [oo] as in boot (/u/) Х х | [h] as in the German ch in Bach or the Scots Loch (/x/) Next...! Group 3: (Capital) (Small) (Pronunciation) (IPA) Б б | [ b ] as in bet or bad (/b/ or /bʲ/) Г г | [g] as in get or go (/ɡ/) Д д | [d] as in do or debt (/d/ or /dʲ/) Ё ё | [yo] as in yolk or yonder *3 (/jo/ or / ʲɵ/) З з | [z] as in zoo (/z/ or /zʲ/) И и | [ee] as in me or eel (/i/ or / ʲi/) Й й | [y] as in boy *4 (/j/) Л л | [l] as in people (/l/ or /lʲ/) П п | [p] as in pet (/p/ or /pʲ/) Ф ф | [f] as in face or fat (/f/ or /fʲ/) Э э | [e] as in met or fed (/ɛ/) Ю ю | [yoo] as in use or universe (/ju/ or / ʲʉ/) Я я | [ya] as in yak (/ja/ or / ʲæ/) Finally, we move onto the last group. The 'hardest' group! Group 4: (Capital) (Small) (Pronunciation) (IPA) Ж ж | [zh] as in the s in pleasure (/ʐ/) Ц ц | [ts] as in its or sits (/t͡s/) Ч ч | [ch] as in church (/t͡ɕ/) Щ щ | [ shsh] as in Welsh sheep or sheer (/ɕɕ/) Ш ш | [ sh] as in shut (/ʂ/) Ы ы | [ i ] as in bit or hit *5 ( /ɨ/ ) Ь ь | [] *6 (/ ʲ/) Ъ ъ | [] *7 Now let me direct some of the things I marked in the sound inventory with the symbol ‘ * ’. *1 Please note that in unstressed syllables standard Moscow pronunciation is of ‘o’ is closer to the [a]. *2 r is rolled like in Scottish English. Please click this link for more on the rolled r. *3 Russians usually omit the diacritic mark (the dots) so it will often look just like [е]. However, it retains the marks in dictionaries etc etc. *4 Й forms diphthongs, so ‘óй’ sounds like ‘oy’ in the word ‘boy’, ‘aй’ sounds like ‘igh’ in the word ‘sigh’, and ‘yй’ sounds like the ‘oui’ in the name ‘Louis’ *5 the /i/ is pronounced with the tip of the tongue further back in the mouth *6 In order to tell you what this sounds like, it is only possibly to for me to give you the IPA. This sign is called the ‘soft sign’, silent. It palatalizes the preceding consonant—if it is phonologically possible. To remind you to pronounce this during transcriptions/pronunciation, I'll put a raised y ‘y’ in place of the Russian letter. *7 This letter does not have a sound of its own, but works by preventing the palatalization of consonants. Both the soft sign and the hard sign became phonetic markers over time, meaning now ‘ь’ indicates that the preceding consonant is ‘soft’ (palatalized) while ‘ъ’ indicates that the preceding consonant is ‘hard’ (non-palatalized). These two letters are pretty hard for me to explain, so I encourage you to read the wikipedia pages for them (they are linked by clicking their letters respectively).

I bought a known dead GPU on the cheap in order to tinker and learn, but I am needing some insight into what I should do to attempt a fix. The card is an XFX RX 570 (photos added) I chucked it into my test PC ASUS X370 pro Generic 4GB RAM x2 (Pentax I think, probably wrong on this) AMD A10-8870E EVGA 750 G+ PSU The GPU in, 8 pin connected I get no fans, no GPU output, no GPU listed in device manager, DDU used, and still no RX 570 in device manager. The iGPU is working and listed, the 570 has an LED light by the power connection that is blue when plugged in and red when the 8-pin power is removed while it’s sitting in the slot. I disassembled the card, cleaned it, and tested the fuses, which were all good, there seemed to be continuity from the 8-pin 12v and PCI 12v pins, and none of the components on the PCB look to be fried or damaged. I tried the plug it in and fire it up and feel the card for the warm components test, and there was no noticeable change in temperature on the die or other components that I could notice. So I am at the end of my knowledge of what should I try next if there are any other steps, so if anyone has any ideas or knowledge to teach me I’d be greatly appreciative. Thanks, Tim

Next semester is my senior year of high school. In one of my classes we will be leaving JavaScript. I thought I would spend my summer learning some basic JavaScript so that I have a good starting point. I am a relative novice when it comes to coding. I have some basic knowlage with html, php and css. What is the best way for me to start learning JavaScript?

Hello Crew! I’m Phobia, I stream on twitch and I own a prebuilt pc. After having it for years I want to get into PC building and also stream myself building different gaming PC‘s. I wanted to ask you guys on advice. I bet a lot of you will tell me to dive in on a build to learn. But I want to know if Any if you know of a really really cheap build or if there is a kit that is specifically for people to build a dummy/cheap pc. something I can build to learn and gain confidence before I start building with some expensive parts. Please don’t hesitate to comment on the form. < content removed by staff > Thanks

Hi guys, I was thinking of getting an online certification done and take up online jobs from places like Odesk, upwork (Coding, programming, developing etc) where i can work from home, or setup a small office. 1. Is it possible ? how good of an idea this is ? "I am dyslexic, so getting a normal education is a little difficult for me" (I do not hold any graduate degree) 2. I am thinking of getting my certification done from www.teamtreehouse.com or www.lynda.com (please suggest where should I invest my time and money) other than treehouse and lynda are there any better places to do from ? 3. In what should I get the certification done ? what all topics to cover ? 4. Can it be my prime source of income ? how much time will it take for me to start earning if I start getting tutorials from now ? 5. How good do they pay ? 6. Can I have flexible working hours ? How does this whole online job thing works ?

on nvidia's website they say that Microsoft's CNTK supports Python, C++, C# and Command line interface which is great because i am fluent in c# (also lua) but when I was installing CNTK there was no option for c++ c# or command line interface so i need some help getting the C# version. also i was considering using Torch because it supports lua but it says its only for linux. is that true that Torch is only for linux?

Hey everyone, I appreciate you coming to look at my thread. So I've always had a love for computers and technology, but just recently have I decided it's what I want to do for the rest of my life as a career and hobby. I've been trying to find out what truly makes me happy, and I keep coming back to computers and technology. Anyway, I've begun to try to learn as much as I could, and I'm learning a ton, but I feel that just watching YouTube videos won't do the trick at all and I want to go way deeper into having knowledge about everything. Sadly, I do not know the best way to do this and I would really love to get some feedback from you guys, as I am loving the Linus Media Group community so far. Is it just a matter of hanging around forums and helping when I can while soaking up knowledge from others? If so, is there an efficient way to do this? Or am I just putting way too much thought into all of this. I'm 18 years old, and I feel like 13 year olds know so much more than me already, so I really wish to dive completely in I'm building my first fully custom computer in a few weeks for $2050, so I'm getting hands on experience with that. Thank you for all of you're responses and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone in the forums and hanging around here a lot more.

In the last WAN show @James used the term singularity in the way it is so often referred to in the tech world, and threw around a few terms that might have confused people. So here is the shortest possible explanation for the singularity I can give: Singularity is when self-improvement time reaches 0, making a machine improve infinitely quickly and thus infinitely powerful. But that can't happen, so now people use it to refer to: for the reasons outlined below. Here is a version with a tiny bit more detail: When scientists plotted the computation power available (back in the 80s I think, couldn't find the paper anymore ) and drew a trendline through it, they did not find it to be a logistic or exponential growth as you would expect from Moore's law and physical consideration, the best fitting line had what we in maths people call a singularity. That meaning nothing but that the value goes to infinity at a finite point. This is not always crazy, when you think about the length of a small line segment very near to the poles on a typical map, that gets stretched to infinity as well. But there are also "bad" or "real" singularities like 1/0 on the 1/x plot. The singularity in the paper was a bad singularity. Scientists generally agree that something like that can't happen with classical computers simply because infinite processes require an infinite amount of energy (there is a limit to how efficient a computer can be) and energy in the universe is limited. In fact there are a large amount of other physics reasons why that can't happen, but they require thermodynamics and everyone hates thermodynamics. Now, why is everyone talking about it? Basically the media picked up the term related to the paper, that obviously got a lot of citations in the press, and so it transformed into a term referring to a time, when machines can self-improve infinitely. Now, this also can't happen, because of the same physical limits, so there is a (all be it REALLY LARGE) limit on the processing power machines can ever have in the universe. Thus the only definition of the singularity that can actually happen is, that machines manage to selfimprove better than humans can improve them. And this definition is super weak, I mean technically the new alpha-go hit that goal, it selfimproved better than the version of alpha-go humans fed. So if you still want the singularity to be somewhat scary you need to add another qualifier: "The singularity is, when artificial general intelligences can selfimprove quicker than humans can improve them, and reach a level of intelligence incomprehensible by humans", without any of these qualifiers the singularity is either reached, not scary or physically impossible. At this point you can easily see that this has nothing at all to do with a real singularity, and that a 0 has also nothing to do with it, it is just a mystical misnomer with a weird etymology.

Hey. I enjoyed building my Main PC. Also i want to learn more about building, tuning and tweaking. When i told my plans of building a PC for overclocking to a friend, He mentioned that He has a 2700k He would give me for cheap. Is this Chip good to overclock and to build around in general? What is the motherboard i should try to get for overclocking? Or would it be a better choice to get a different old CPU/mobo combo to practice stuff like this? I don't need a insane battlestation, i just want a 2nd PC to do office Work, some minor HTML/Java programming (if my further studies lead to this), movies and a few older games Like Diablo 3. TechYesCity (of i got His Name right) Made a Video 2 weeks ago about adding a 750ti to a prebuilt system, so this would have been the gpu i would be aiming for. So plans so far for the build are: used 2700k, used mobo (need tips here), 8 or 16 GB of memory, a gtx 750ti and probably a 128GB SSD for boot speed. Let meine hear about the quality of my plans and if there would be a better way to approach things. Thanks for tips!

Hello there programmers! I am a 16 year old Belgium student and I am intrested in coding! I've never done it before, tried around with codecacademy.com, but didn't like the format of learning I had a hard time understanding what they meant (as English isn't my foreign language). Do you guys have any tips for a starting programmer who wants to learn Java (if possible in Dutch?). Kind regards, Ucthar AKA Arthur

I'm a complete noob, but I'm interested in learning how to compare CPUs So what I've heard from a bunch of friends is that the R5 1600x is a better value CPU at $339.00 CAD. It's a better product for overall gaming, creative content, rendering etc. I was just looking at Ryzen CPUs vs i5 CPUs and I came across the i5 7640x ($345.00 CAD) and the i5-7600k ($335.00 CAD). My initial comparison of the specs showed that the i5 processors run at a better frequency and boost, while sporting slightly higher TDPs, and the only real edge the R5 1600x has; is the higher cache at 16mb. From my experience of overhearing comments about Intel vs AMD in the past, I've basically developed a rule of thumb stating that if you have enough money and budget isn't a problem, the Intel CPU is always the better, premium buy. However, if you're on a budget then looking at a counter AMD CPU might be the better option because of the lower cost. Now I don't know if this is right, but I've still heard a couple tech-reviewers mention this. So... why not just by the i5 7640x or 7600k? Basically the same price as the R5 1600x. How is the R5 1600x still relevant? Is it that the sheer number of cores allows the CPUs to be better at multi-tasking? Is this now just a problem of gaming (i5) vs content creation (R5)? If you get some time, help me out to understand what the benefits of the R5 1600x would be over these i5s. Thanks! Riqsha

Hi guys! For the past couple of weeks I've been trying to find a way to quickly learn Java without getting bored to death by tutorials etc. I am a relatively experienced .NET developer and know object-oriented programming, I don't want to go down to basics of what an "if" statement is. I would love to just get a project or an advanced tutorial that I could follow, but everything that I find on Youtube is either from 2010 or is 50% of basics of object-oriented programming. These "Learn programming interactively" websites are also bullsh*t for the most part because you spend hours trying to progress while clicking "submit" and getting "Great, you wrote hello world, here, have 200 useless points". Do you know a way that's going to get me quite quickly into the more advanced stuff? (I think the basics will just come along). I know that in Java you can do some pretty badass stuff, but what are the coolest things that it allows programmers to do? Just to clarify: If you want to get into .NET programming, you can start with basic stuff in console, then move to some more advanced stuff with WinForms or WPF where you'll actually see some nice progress. I'm looking for that advanced part of Java. Thanks for any advice!
