  1. Hello all, I'm a bit confused regarding the Pcie-lanes my motherboard has. Specs: R5 2600x Asus prime b450 plus Rtx 3070 I just bought recently a new nvme m.2 ssd and I want to transfer some data from my old one to the new one (eventually i would use both at the same time). I would buy a pcie to m.2 adaptercard and place it in my 2nd pcie 2.0 x16 slot. My problem is I DON'T want that my pcie3.0 x16 gets downgraded to x8 and the pcie 2.0 runs in x8. (In bios I have the bifurcation option, It's on auto tho). So i looked the specs up in the manual but I'm a bit confused about it, I hope u can help my with clarification . 1. Does the 2nd pcie x16 only run @4 or it could run faster (like if I would use a x16 adapter card instead of a x4). Or is it only a x16 slot with wiring only for x4? 2. I know that the 2nd pcie get the lanes from the chipset but if it would run in x8 mode would it take it from the cpu? Thanks people! Have a nice evening/day
  2. Hello! I have an H310m-Hg4 by Asrock, and sometimes, when I remove my Gpu for clean (an example), after put her in my pc again, the pci X16 slot stay in X8 3.0 or X1 3.0, for solve this problem I need to reset the bios and remove my ram sticks, and my Gpu back in x16 3.0! Well, this problem can be limitation of PCI LANES of H310m Chipset, or cpu (i5 9400f)? I have connected usb in all ports of my mobo (I work with video editing - and need to have cameras, microfones and other things connected at the same time) THANKS!
  3. Where do I check if this processor will be able to run a GPU on the top PCIe slot @ x8 or x16 speed? My 3000g (costed 400 brl) only ran @ x4. When my GF stopped playing games, we tried mining on the RTX 3060 but it needs x8 or more, so it locked at less than half mining power :c Here in Brazil CPUs are vanishing from stores, so all I got money for is a 3200ge (700 brl) or the 2200g (680 brl but worse in every way than the 3200ge). I also could spend a lil bit more on a R5 1600 (850 brl, seems cheapy for the 6/12 and is the AF 12nm, has no iGPU tho). R3 3100 (900 brl) an 3300x (920 brl) seem not worth, given that the 1600af is cheaper. Also, should I be worried about anything else with the R3 3200GE or the R5 1600AF? I know the 3200ge is a lower power more efficient 12nm version of the 3200g (14nm) and the 1600af is a "downclocked 2600" (also 12nm). About the 3060: damn Nvidia "tried" to give gamers a way to buy a GPU, and ended up cutting them from mining entirelly, while miners with better hardware (cpus and mobos with tons of pcie lanes) are buying them anwyays... This computer world is making me go insane >:C
  4. Okay question here I know the 12th gen Intel has 20 lanes total 16x 5.0 lanes and 4x 4.0 lanes but x8 dmi 4.0 connects the CPU to the motherboard Wich would equal 28 lanes total but 12th gen only has 20 total. If you put a nvme drive in CPU m2 slot that would take the X4 4.0 and gpu gets 16 so that takes the 20 total. Does the x8 dmi 4.0 lanes take away from the chipset PCIe lanes to link to CPU? or from CPU PCIe lanes to chipset? because all the lanes are used up on CPU.
  5. So i have just bought a WD Blue SN570 which supports 4 pcie gen3 lanes but according to the WD software it's running on only 2 lanes. I have an HP laptop with model no da1041 tu with Core i5 8th gen and 8gb ram. If anyone has any idea how to run it on 4 lanes or does my laptop even supports 4 pcie lanes for the nvme ssd?
  6. Hi Everyone, Currently, I have a 5600x on a Gigabyte X570 Elite Wifi ( which i dont use the wifi module because I have a Wifi 6 router and I bought an aditional Wifi 6 PCIe Card ) I have on the x16 an RTX 3070, on the x4 slot a Wifi 6 Card (the module itself is x1), and on the other 2 x1 slots I have 2 more GPUS for mining using PCIe Risers ( 2070 and 1660 super ). Also, I have an NVME drive attached to the PCIe x4 NVME m2 slot on the motherboard. Everything works fine, all devices are detected and can be used, until I hit the PCIe Wifi card with a huge load ( lets say a speed test ). At that moment, the internet drops drastically, even losing all connection, and the mining cards also lowers their usage. Here is a link to the motherboard specs: X570 AORUS ELITE WIFI (rev. 1.x) Specification | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global Can someone help me understand what is going on? Do I have too many things attached? I'm lacking PCIe lanes? PD: I tried configuring the Bios to use PCIe Bifurcation to have 2 PCIe x8 ( as Slot 1 and 2 ), but it didn't help.
  7. I just bought a Kingston Fury Renegade 500GB m.2 ssd, and as soon as i popped it in, launched Crystal Disk Info and Crystal Disk Mark. I got half the R/W speeds that I was expecting. I saw that the m.2 ssd was running on x2 not on x4, that it's supposed to. I installed AMD drivers, went into the BIOS but there wasn't any settings about the M.2 slots. My SYS specs are in the pics, please help me how I can change this to x4...
  8. After installing a pcie x1 wifi adapter (PCI_EJ_5.12) +laptop wifi module, next day when i turn on the pc the primary boot drive sata ssd is disabled or if i manage to boot into windows, the ssd stays at 100% use and windows become uselss needing reinstalling. The config is next: AsRock B365M Pro4/intel 9600/rx 480/5 sata drivers Tested on other 2 PCs before opening topic: - with no video card detection after installing the adapter (ASUS B85M-K/ intel cpu/rx 480/2 sata drives) - no problems with the wifi adapter after a cold boot next day (GA-Z87X-UD5H/ intel cpu / pcie GPU/ 1 sata drive) For the B365 is a problem with insuficient lanes available? And why has a problem only after longer period of power off? Any advice would be appreciated.
  9. Hi, How does CPU and motherboard lanes work? does storage media like SSD, NVME share lanes with GPU, therefore, sharing GPU bandwidth? For example my i7 9700k have 16PCIE lanes and my Z390 chipset have 24 PCIE? who is sharing what?
  10. Hi, I have been searching for answers about this particular motherboard and NVMe combo, even checked the manual but I keep seeing conflicting information about this. I tthink I can populate 2 NVMe drive at full speed but I need to make sure. I have an i7 6700K on ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard. I currently have: 1x RTX 2080 Ti on top PCIe slot 2x SATA SSDs 1x NVMe M.2 SSD installed on the motherboard itself I am asking if I could buy a M.2 to PCIe slot adaptor such as this: https://www.umart.com.au/Startech-X4-PCI-Express-To-M-2-PCIE-SSD-Adapter_38729G.html and still have enough PCIe lanes for another NVMe SSD at full speed? Thanks.
  11. Literally my first post in any forum, ever... lucky you. I'm planning out my first serious build and I'm not sure how many PCIE Lanes I'm going to need for my usage. I've decided on the parts I'm going to use (admittedly some of my choices are a bit 'because I can', but if you have any feedback on my choices, I'd be keen to hear them!), other than of course for the CPU; I'm not sure whether I need the 40 PCIE Lanes that the 6850k offers, or whether I can get away with the poultry 28 that you get from the 6800k. Here's my build https://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/harpersneil/saved/jfRvK8 Will I have enough PCIE Lanes to have the NVME M.2 Storage, a second 1080 in the future AND be able to use the included (with the Asus X99 Deluxe Mobo) Thunderbolt 3 Card? Although for now I've got enough (at least I think so!?!) in the future I'm looking to build my own NAS (currently using a Synology DS414), and I'd like to set it up with Thunderbolt 3 so I can get massively improved transfer speeds - the Asus X99 Deluxe board has a add-in card with TB3 on it - presumably I can use this?? Any help/advice that anyone is able to offer is very much appreciated! Seems a bit obvious, but this really helped!! -
  12. We kept on hearing that Ryzen has 24 lanes. Now is it really 24 lanes? No words from AMD yet though. The images below is from Asus Crosshair VI Hero. It's the only sections, in the entire spec sheet, that says "AMD Ryzen", assuming whats under that, runs off the Ryzen CPU. And what's under the X370 chipset, runs off the chipset. Their 7th Gen APUs, is confirmed to have just 8 lanes. Here is one of the 7th gen apu: http://products.amd.com/en-us/search/APU/AMD-A-Series-Processors/AMD-A12-Series-APU-for-Desktops/7th-Gen-A12-9800E-APU/202 AMD Ryzen with 24 lanes ? -Expansion slot: 16 lanes used, from the dual x8 -Storage: 4 lanes used for M.2 in PCIe or SATA. -USB Ports: 4 lanes used for USB 3.0? 16+4+4=24? AMD 7th Gen APU with 8 lanes -Expansion slot: 8 lanes used. This is all from the CPU. -Storage: M.2 in SATA mode only, that's correct because there is no more lanes from the CPU -USB Ports: 4 lanes for USB 3.0? Now that can't be because all of 8 lanes is used up by the "Expansion Slot". So that means it's just says it supports 4x USB 3.0. If this is the case then. On Ryzen, that 4x USB 3.0 isn't using any cpu lanes and therefore Ryzen only has 20 lanes? full spec https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-CROSSHAIR-VI-HERO/specifications/
  13. Well here we are, today AMD had its launch presentation in San Francisco for R7 chips and finally being able to see the clocks vs the intel extreme chips was great. They boast about the price vs Intels 6900k, 6800k, ect. BUT something is missing that might make that price difference a problem. Questions that make or break Ryzen pricing: 1. Only 4 Dimm Slots? 2. RAM capacity less than Intel? 3. How many PCIE lanes are available vs Intel 40 pcie lanes? I am really impressed with R7 chips now that clock speeds vs intel extreme are available but these questions might make the price savings of AMD not worth my time. What do you think? WANTED: If ANYONE including the LTT team has any information on these questions please leave a comment below.
  14. I am planning a build that includes a pci extender. Now for spacing purposes I want to know what pci slot to use for my extender since the max length without data loss is 20cm (8"). In the manual of the motherboard I found this about the pci-e x16 slots and graphic cards: • Single x16• Dual x8/x8• Triple x8/x8/x4 Does this mean the first slot is x16 only and the second is x8, or does it mean it splits the first and second slot into x8 x8 when you use sli (what I won't be doing)? I will only use one pci-e x16 slot so this confused me. The motherboard I want to use is: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/product/L28H99/asrock-fatal1ty-z170-gaming-k6-atx-lga1151-motherboard-fatal1ty-z170-gaming-k6 This is what is says in the manual exactly: 3 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 Slots (PCIE2/PCIE4/PCIE6: single at x16 (PCIE2); dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4); triple at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4) / x4 (PCIE6))
  15. Hi. I'm planning on building a low cost gaming/autodesk maya capable rig. I was looking through my options and I ran into a question that I cant get a straight answer to from many online sources I searched. Here are some relavant components that I want to put together: Intel i7-7700K - Newegg.com ASUS ROG GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - Newegg.com ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero - Newegg.com So, to the question. I noticed that CPU can support only 16 PCI lanes. The GPU needs 16 PCI lanes. Now, if I'd like to connect M.2 (Socket 3 with M Key) SSD, does it use 4 PCI lanes? Does it impair GPUs full, 16 PCI lanes, potential? P.S. In case it does weaken GPU performance, what would be a CPU that you can advice for me to get that can support both 1080 Ti and M.2?
  16. I'm upgrading to X99 soon (probably brack friday) and I'm wondering if there are any strong arguments for choosing the 6800k over the 5820k? I'm not to fuzzed about the price difference honestly, I do know the 5820k OC better so that's the only real reason I'm asking the question, because I like OCing and the 6800k was poop in the tests I've seen. My PC is mainly going to be used for game development (programming and occasional 3D modelling). Working in-engine is about the same as playing a game in itself, except a bit heavier on the CPU. But still, my main reason for upgrading is lack of pcie lanes on my 4670k. Is there some tech that I might want from the 6800k which is absent in the 5820k? Or is one simply slightly slower than the other?
  17. Hey forum, I'm building a new rig and while doing my research i found i didn't know as much stuff as i thought i did.. I don't know how pcie lanes work.. Soo I watched Linus video on this : PCIe Lanes - PCIe 8x vs 16x in SLI And now i wonder : The 8700k only has 16 PCIe lanes. From what i understand the GPU will use 16x lanes in the best scenario but could use 8x Several questions here : 1. How many CPU/PCH lanes does the mobo have ? And how do you find that number ? 2. Will the M.2 use the PCH lanes ? 3. Does using a 1080ti with only 8x lanes affects its performance? 4. Can I do SLI with two 1080 ti's and an M.2 with this setup? Also, 5. is this M.2 compatible with the mobo, and is it any good ? I'll use it for OS only Rig : ASRock Z370 Killer SLI Intel® Core™ i7-8700K Processor ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce® GTX 1080 TI 11GB OC Edition Adata XPG SX8000 <- M.2 850 500gb ssd 32gb ram 1000w psu Thank you guys
  18. I thought about getting an m.2 SSD for a while now. Is my MSI z97 Gaming 3 good enough for something like the Samsung 960 evo? It says on the MSI website that it is PCI Express 2.0 x2 and 10 Gb/s. Will there be any problems with the lanes? I want to use 3 sata ports, the m.2 slot and a single gpu.
  19. Hello, I would like to know if my build below will work in that I want each card to run . I do not care if each card drops right down to PCI 1x, I just want them to run. Please don't criticize the price, double PSU, CPU choice, MOBO choice, RAM choice, etc. This is a PCI question. As long as each card runs and is detected by the system, I will be happy with it. I am predicting that because the motherboard supports 4-way SLI and the i5 only has 16 PCI lanes, that each card will fall back to something like 4x each or maybe 8/4/2/2. Here is the build: Thanks in advance!
  20. If a CPU has a max of 16 PCIe lanes (which is standard for most i7 CPUs of today), does that mean a modern GPU will max out that bandwidth? Would adding any other card (like a USB card) limit the amount of lanes available to the GPU (from 16 to 8)? Or is it only limited when you install a card into a shared slot (for example a slot that would be used for SLI)? I think I might be getting a little confused... I just want to understand that I'm understanding PCIe lanes correctly.
  21. So I'm planning a new build over the coming months (once graphics cards finally become available) and I'm looking to build a Ryzen system to replace my aging FX-8350 build. I'm planning to have 2 SSDs in my system for separate boot drives, as I dual boot Linux (Solus OS for almost everything) and Windows 10 (for Killing Floor 2, Lightroom and nothing else), as I prefer to keep my OS boot drives separated. I'm also planning to have a full AMD system and either get an AMD RX 580 if prices come down and stock availability increases, or get a Vega GPU later in the year. At some point I will probably end up getting a 2nd RX or Vega GPU for crossfire. My question is, is Ryzen going to offer enough PCIe lanes to do what I really want to do, and should I be going for a motherboard with 2x M.2 slots, or using 2x traditional SATA SSDs? Thanks for your help.
  22. I have an Asus Z270i board with two m.2 slots. They both handle NVME, but only the front one can use sata. PCIe lanes isn't something I've had to deal with before so in short I'm wondering if I'll have performance issues if I use both m.2 slots? Should I get a second NVMe or a sata ssd? (I have a 960 evo 250gb nvme) There's 16 lanes on the CPU and 4 on the motherboard. I assume I won't have issues, but I'd like to have it confirmed so I don't go and buy something that'll end up being detrimental to my overall build.
  23. Ok, I am a little confused and I need something explained to me. I've studied CompTIA A= Certification but I don't remember everything in it. I know Linus mentioned in his latest video about i9 having different amounts of "Lanes" from 40 to 44, but does that mean that you're limited on how many PCIe devices you can have on an X299 board? Does it mean that a 16x GPU will run at 8X or less? I don't quite understand what he meant in the video. Could someone clearly explain to me what it means and why it's good or bad and does it mean I'd be limited on how many PCIe Devices I can have? EDIT: and why did he say we're limited on how much memory we are able to have?
  24. When i am browsing for a new CPU i love to take a loooooooot of time looking at the specs but something confuses me .Every Intel CPU that i look up has # Of PCI-e lanes but i do not see that on AMD cpus not even on official amd website. Am i just blind and don't see it , or does amd hide that number on official site oooorrr they don't have this limitation ???? I have a couple more questons : 1 : Do those PCI-e lane reffere to only GPUs and not other cards like : networking cards , sound cards .... ???? 2 : How many of PCI-e lanes does Athlon X4 880k support P.S. I am sorry for bad English , i know how to speak it but i don't know how to write some words. I live ( and am born ) in Serbia so we do not speak English here. Thank you.
  25. Hi all, I'm currently in the process of collecting parts for a new Skylake / Z170 based build. I have already a Crucial MX-100 sata based SSD (512gb) that i'm going to keep from my previous computer as i didn't yet have it a very long time. I wasn't planning on getting any M.2 NVMe / PCIe based SSD but during the Black Friday weekend i saw one from Toshiba/OCZ (RVD400-M22280-256G) on sale and got it. Now i' haven't yet bought the motherboard, CPU or GPU. My question relates to the PCIe lanes and how it is set up on the motherboard. I've been planning to get the Asus Z170-A motherboard (actually likely the Z170-AR since for some reason only that version is available in New Zealand, but there doesn't seem to be much difference between them). The motherboard does have a dedicated M.2 slot (4 x 3.0 I believe) For reference, CPU will be a 6600k (perhaps a 6700k) and a single GTX 1070 (probably EVGA SC Gaming) as the GPU. What I can't seem to find, or sort thru the technical jargon; is whether the M.2 card will take away PCIe lanes from the graphics card, or whether it has its own dedicated lanes. And if it does, will there be a noticeable drop in performance of the GTX 1070 in 8x rather than 16x? What about if the graphics card / system is running in overclocked or boost mode? Are there Z170 motherboards you would recommend instead of the Z170-AR if the above are true?
