Fellow Techies, I hope all are doing well. I am trying to figure out why my pc is not waking up via lan. I am running a MSI Z97s Krait SLI. I am aware that it does not have a WOL nic but I purchased an intel nic that does. However, I can't seem to get it to work. I allowed PCI/PCI-E to power on the pc, and allowed magic packets. I am using team viewer. I am trying to wake my home pc from my macbook air. There are times I need something from my pc as well as other things I need to accomplish. I can't leave my pc running while I am away as that would cause our power bill to go up... a lot. I use no-ip for a public address. If you have any suggestions as to what I should use instead (team viewer included) please let me know. If you have gotten this to work on your Krait edition or other motherboard that doesn't natively use WOL your help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I was just looking for a good z170 Motherboard and I found the msi z170a Krait Gaming 3X. So I watched some YT ant this kind of stuff and i didnt noticed that there were 2 versions of the z170a Krait. 1. Version: Z170A KRAIT GAMING [https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170-KRAIT-GAMING.html#hero-overview] 1. Version: Z170A KRAIT GAMING 3X [https://msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-KRAIT-GAMING-3X.html#hero-specification] It is a litlle bit confusing and now my Question? Is there any big difference (I know there are some but are they noticeable in daily use) between those two? And which would be the smarter choice for Kabylake. Thanks for your Support [Please ignore any wrong spelling or meaning of my words. Iam German and my English isn´t really good]

So I've had this reoccurring problem (as in multiple months, if not a year by now) where my PC will randomly hiccup/freeze up, and/or black screen (no video signal detected by monitor) for a couple seconds randomly. It normally only seems to happen when my PC is under moderate to heavy load (ie. heavy benchmarks or gaming), all my drivers are installed/ updated, I've reformed drives and reinstalled windows, overclocked and underclocked everything, and I've tried running things with the bare minimum in the background. When my system goes back to normal shortly after there are almost no real signs of a problem, for the most part, it just resumes right where I left off like nothing happened: No high temps, No dropped voltage, No artifacts. The most that ie been able to pick up on is that whenever it does happen the only sign of it having ever happened is a few % dip in Cpu usage right at the moment of black screening, and in overwatch, I'll get a rendering "Rendering Device has been lost. Application is closing." although I'm fairly certain any other game will just resume after the hiccup like it never happened. Besides it only seeming to happen under load there seems to be no other trigger I can personally find through monitoring the system; It's not even fairly consistent, some days it can never occur, others I can't even play Overwatch for longer than a couple min periods. Does anyone have any input on how I can isolate the problem, and perhaps even fix it? I don't even know what kind of files or screenshots might be of use, but if you think it might be useful just name it, and I'll try and upload it. I'm looking for an X99 motherboard and I've found a krait edition on 30% sale and I'm having trouble finding reviews for it. I like it's look, but I don't think it has a U.2 slot and it's not "Military Class 5", it's 4. Also, is it good for overclocking, or should I find a different one? I'm prepared to spend enough money to get something close to the MSI carbon gaming pro. My question is, if the U.2 slot, RGB lighting and anything I might have missed worth the money? https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X99S-SLI-Krait-Edition.html#hero-overview Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi again, I have a relative simple question, of which I thought I had the answer to up until a few hours ago when I started doubting again. TL;DR: need a new AM3+ MoBo, are these MSI boards good (enough) or should I pick another brand? My current ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 with a Phenom II X4 965 likely has a dead PCIe slot (and it only has one), which leaves my R9 290 out of action. Also, the MS Display Adapter does not really work that great without a graphics chip. As much as I'd like to wait until the Kaby lake and new AMD series come out, I am afraid my temporary fix with my laptop with a 3610QM and 650M simply won't suffice for my needs. I have been looking for a short-term replacement MoBo, of which I have selected these three: MSI 970A SLI Krait MSI 970 Gaming ASrock 970 Pro3 R2.0 Of which the Krait had my preference because of the USB 3.1 and white theme. The MSI Gaming is also preferred because of the looks (compared to the ASrock). However, I have been reading about both of these motherboards and people mention that the used components in both MSI boards are not that good, especially when used for overclocking. Now, I am not really planning on overclocking for now, but when I have upgraded to either Kaby or Zen, I will start to tinker around with my current Phenom II X4 965. Are these boards really as bad as some people suggest? Should I pick a different brand? If not, which would be 'better'? Please note that I am able to get all three of the MoBo's for € 50,- (50% off the MSI and 33% off the ASrock), NEW. And that I am planning to upgrade anyway to one of the newer generations, so this a 'temporary' fix. Thanks in advance, JB

Hello all fellow Linus Tech individuals, though this is not my first post this is a strong introductory post. In November of last year (2015), I suddenly got struck by the bug to build a PC. I can't put my finger down on the reasoning behind it, but I believe it had something to do with my fingers getting itchy to fix/build/create/tinker with something during the winter months (Minnesota's weather was just turning foul). I had been a console gamer for a while, 2005, but my roots were from PC games because my father is a database developer he knew his way around PCs and introduced me early age 4. Playing games like AOE II, Madden, and Descent, and getting demo disks to even get samples were good memories. And with black Friday around the corner I felt I could probably build something which would beat any console with an entry cost of $100 over a 2tb Xbox one. Thus my search began as I browsed forums (toms, anandtech, linus), read tech articles (anandtech, tom's hardware, pc gamer), discovered youtube tech channels (linus, NCIX, Jayztwocents, Paul'sHW). Looking to build a PC for "$400+graphics card." This is what I came up with over the shopping holiday. Went team Blue and Green, with budget Case and PSU. All prices reflect after tax and mailed in rebates, so true cost out of pocket. CPU: i7-4790k - $268.92 (microcenter) MoBo: MSI Z97s Krait SLI - $75.79 (microcenter) Mem: Corsair Veng Pro 2x8GB ddr3-2400 - $69.99 (Newegg) SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB - $75.09 GPU: MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC" - 271.99 (Newegg.com, this does not reflect the Class-action Lawsuit $30 "rebate") Case: Thermaltake Versa H22 (4 case fans included) $42.83 (microcenter) PSU: Thermaltake TR2 600w 80+ Gold $39.99 (Newegg.com) OS: Win 7 key from dead laptop, "upgraded" to Win 10 Build Total: $844.6 So didn't end up being "$400+GPU" but I felt I got a solid build. A couple weeks later, I upgraded the storage and cooling with a Seagate 3TB HDD ($90) and a Hyper 212 ($25) from microcenter. After this upgrade, the build became my gaming pc for Battlefront, Modded Skyrim and other titles that I had picked up after my first Steam Black Friday sale. With the sudden Launch/announcement of GTX Pascal, I was suddenly revitalized into PC building etc. I wanted to learn as much as possible, and without an end goal of simply purchasing parts and building I wandered the vast expanse of PC parts. I started following LTT, Paul's HW, Jayztwocents, and Kyle-Awesomesauce religiously after Subscribing to all and watching them digest the news of Pascal and its impact on PC gaming. After watching moving Vlogs from both Jay and Linus, I felt the need to upgrade my PC work space from a couch and old HDTV to a desk and proper monitor. Copying Jay and Paul I found a used IKEA Galant Desk for my set up. The Next step in my evolution was Submitting my PC to a "PimpMyPC" this last week on AwesomeHardware. Surprisingly they did comment on it. This gave me the motivation to revisit the my cable management which was described by Paul as a "Nightmare." Thus I was able to produce the following results: Which after tagging Paul and Kyle on twitter, Kyle was very gracious and gave me the Praise and reassurance I was seeking! #namedrop And if you have made it this far in reading my journey, I thank you. I hope to continue more into the software side of things now that I have my PC straightened out. But plan on upgrading to a Modular PSU and Windowed case in the near future so I can admire my build rather than let it hide in plain sight. Here is a link to my current PC build on PCPartpicker with purchase prices.

msi MSI Z97S SLI Krait edition (custom paint)
msgnud posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Can i take these off to spray paint them matte black without damaging the motherboard ? I Think they are mounted with 2-3 screws from the back of the motherbard. Are these just plastic bits with no purpose and to make the board better looking ? Thanks for any reply -
Hi guys, i'm building my first configuration and in my country these three motherboard are about the same price: -AsRock z170 Extreme 4 (cheaper) -MSI z170a Krait Gaming (10€ more than the asrock) -MSI z170 Gaming Pro(10€ more than the krait) and i can't really figure it out which is the best. Any help?

I assume there's a difference between the two. From what I've seen of other boards I would guess the a has USB 3.1, but then it's priced $20 lower so that wouldn't make sense. Also, I was thinking of plasti-dipping the upper half of my RAM cooler to create a stripe by masking off the bottom half and then putting a newspaper or plastic wrap under the tape. What large flat surface should I use to shield the bottom half of my RAM that won't get really static-ey or should I just bite the bullet and take off the heat spreaders?

I can't work out the difference between these two motherboards.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Z97S-Sli-Krait-Motherboard/dp/B00OIKLODK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455619565&sr=8-1&keywords=z97+SLI+Krait and http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Z97S-SLI-Krait-Motherboard/dp/B00UTGH02G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1455619565&sr=8-2&keywords=z97+SLI+Krait

So recently I installed a Corsair H100i Gtx into my Define R5 top mount, push pull config, I have the water block in a cpu_fan header and the "push" fans off the Y splitter from the block, the "pull" fans are in Sys_fan 1,2 headers and I just cant get them to spin any slower . .. they're rated at 2400rpm and after tinkering in the bios/fan curves the least I can have them is 1600rpm which is STILL pretty noisy so is there a way to slow them down outside of the bios?? or should I look into different fans (these are the Stock ones that came bundled with the H100i)

I'll be upgrading to Skylake in early january, and my original plan was to go with the MSI Krait Z170A, mostly because I really like how it looks, and it's fairly cheap for the features that you get. Then I noticed that the ASUS Z170-A has come down a bit in price and is now slightly cheaper than the MSI. As far as I can tell feature-wise they are very similiar. So I'm a bit torn. I still prefer the design of the Krait though. What do you guys think? Any particular reason to go with one or the other? Any other Z170 boards in the same price range I should be looking at? Thanks in advance.

So as the title says one of the hubs on the back opf my motherboard won't transfer data, it transfers power but no data. I checked the device manager thinking something may be wrong with them but it says they are all working properly. Then I thought I would check the BIOS because it is an RMA board. but the USB ports were all enabled in the bios as well. IDK what to do and any help would be appreciated Thanks, Jato Main Specs., MOBO: MSI X99A SLI Krait Ram: 32Gb Kingston fury DDR4 at 2400 Mhz. CPU: 5820K @ 3.3 (Stock) GPU: Zotac GTX 970 If you need more specs. just ask.

Im stuck between 2 motherboards to choose from: The MSI Krait z97: http://www.ncix.com/detail/msi-z97s-sli-krait-edition-db-103434-1259.htm or the Asus Z97-E: http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-z97-e-atx-lga1150-ddr3-1a-103886.htm What would be cons and pros of the two? Which one would be better? The black and white board by MSI is alot easier to do a themed build in the future, rather than the black and gold by Asus but as of right now looks dont really matter

Before I start off, I'd like to say that I'm new to building PC's and all that so if there's anything that you think that I should change or improve please do and Thanks! This'll be my first PC so I'm not really going too extreme in my build and also this build is specificially going to be in the BLACK & WHITE colour scheme. CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition RAM: 4x4GB Kingston HyperX Fury PSU: Corsair RM650 GPU: MSI GTX 960 OC Edition (White) Case: NZXT H440 (White) HDD: WD 1TB Blue SSD: Kingston HyperX Fury 120GB CPU Cooler: Corsair H110 Extras: 1x Corsair AF140 Fan 1x Bitfenix white LED strip 1x Bitfenix sleeved 24 Pin 1x Bitfenix skeeved 8 Pin EPS 1x Bitfenix sleeved 6 Pin (GPU) Note: I'm going to be building this the end of this year and I'll happily post my build on forums

Hello everyone! New user but long time video watcher. Within the last year I've gotten to love computers and building them. I have one PC that was a bundle deal from tiger direct that's mainly used as a HTPC. I'm looking to build a new PC for my upcoming school term and some gaming. I have created a list that I like but am wondering if any of you can offer some recommendations. I'm trying to stick too $1000ish including shipping and tax and as you can see there is a bit of a black and white theme happening. I currently have a Corsair CX500m power supply and a WD blue HDD which is why they aren't in the list. Thanks for all the replies and input. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/MCYGFT

Is there any eta, in the UK, for the MSI GTX 970 with a white and black colour scheme (seen in this post--> http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/284946-msi-announced-two-new-gtx-970-models/)?? If there isn't are there any alternatives with the same colour scheme??

I am relatively new to the make your own computer hobby, and I could really use some help deciding between these two motherboards for my new gaming computer. I plan on using two GTX 980 graphics cards in SLI, I'm getting a seperate sound card so I dont need good on board sound, I'm going to be using a single samsung 850 pro 512 GB SSD, I might get an SSD that can be used with the M.2 port after my computer is done, I'm getting an intel core i7 4790k processor, I'm using 2 sets of corsair dominator platinum (2x8GB) of DDR3 RAM, and plan on water cooling everything everything inside an NZXT Phantom 410 case. I'm trying to keep the colors of my computer black, blue, and some white. These two motherboards seem to have pretty close prices, yet the ASRock motherboard seems to have a lot more stuff for a little more money. Is one of the boards a better quality than the other, or are these boards almost the same, with one of them having a few more bells and whistles?

Hey guys, I have a plan in mind, and all the hardware is in my Newegg Cart! here is the specs: Case: NZXT Phantom 530 (White) MOBO: MSI z97 SLI Krait Edition Processor: i5 4690k GPU: EVGA 04G-P4-2983-KR GTX 980 RAM: 2x8 1866 HyperX Fury (White) Power: EVGA 850w SuperNova Gold CPU Cooling: Kraken x61 Monitor: LG 2550x1080p IPS Display using a DisplayPort cable I have a question nagging my brain that is really driving me nuts! Is it best to have the intakes in the front sides and bottom with exhaust on the top and rear? Or can I invert the motherboard and have the radiator blowing out the bottom with a fan intake at the top? Any more recommendations or this build would be sweet, and I will post pictures of the final product on this thread in the next few weeks.
