Summary As of April 10th, 2024, an FCC Ruling has been put in effect that ISP's must show accurate pricing, speeds, and data caps displayed like food labels on a cereal box. (Shown in the spoiler box below) Quotes My thoughts This is a huge win for consumer rights. Companies should never have been able to hide pricing for anything and hopefully these labels will minimize hidden fee's. This has been a long time coming with the original plan made in 2022 and I'm glad it is finally implemented. I also want to add that the fact that they need to display these like a food label is also just slightly hilarious. Hi! I’ve been searching through the internet and the forum but the answer isn’t exactly straight as I’m quite new to network in general. is my only option to switch isp/ upgrade plans? Goal: VPN back to home LAN to WOL/ smb/plex/jellyfin etc. Issue: Cannot assign ports as it seemed to randomly assign ports whenever I make an internet (packet?) request. Treated with nmap + canyouseeme.org Setup: I am in the states with RCN as ISP. WAN > Modem + WiFi hybrid > EROS 6 > my tp-link router > LAN Everything is setup in my router for simplicity, got baited to the EROS by isp thinking I can port forward there. I’ve found options of using reverse proxy request or go around under no-Ip but to my understanding it still require a stable port to be forwarded out there? I have PIA vpn with port forwarding as well, but im not sure if they allow me to setup my router as server.

So I moved to a fiber optic internet provider, and the ping is good (70–80 ping), so since I haven't bought an HDD, the only game I can actually play is Roblox, but it's been a month since I got randomly disconnected (error 277) for no reason; my ping will freeze, then it will disconnect me. I asked some friends that have this internet provider, and they said the same thing: they get this kind of issue, so I asked some redditors, and they recommended either getting a VPN or getting a 3rd party router, and I have no idea which of the two would actually work. Any idea what I should do first?

Long story short: my dad built a house and there are 3 apartments around for rent and all will be provided internet from the main house. There are 4 house that need to split the internet from the ISP and I dont know the properway to split it. The modem is set to bridge mode, do I just use a 5 port managed switch to split directly to each router in each house or should I use somthing like UDM Pro, VLANs and firewall rules to split the internet? I don't want to spy on the users from the aparments and just want to limit the speed to 100mb upload downlaod for each aparment.

TL;DR Ping to 92.223.86.86, 10 km away at ~170 ms ping. Acquaintance nearby with different ISP has 9 ms. Is the issue my ISP, Wifi,...? Background I am playing an online game where the server, to my knowledge, is physically located in the same city (~10km=6miles). I have cabled internet with WiFi and have a ping of around 170-200 ms with severe in-game spikes. At my friend's house, under a different ISP, the ping is 9 ms without any spikes. I need help in identifying whether the issue is from my ISP, my WiFi set-up, or the game server itself. That my friend has a lower ping seems to indicate that it is my ISP. If so, I need to contact my ISP and tell them what is wrong. The game has several local servers with similar results. The game runs on my Android Phone using 5.2GHz WiFi band. PingPlotter is running in my older laptop using the 2.4GHz WiFi band. Although similar ping test on my phone yields the same 170-200ms ping. Traceroute from me to 92.223.86.86 using (PingPlotter in Windows) Traceroute from 3rd party Singapore server to 92.223.86.86 (https://www.ip2location.com/free/traceroute) Geoping from 3rd party Singapore server to 92.223.86.86 [3ms] (GeoPing in Android PingTools) CABLED sample as requested: A new WiFi sample taken for comparison: We can see that the cabled one still has 170 ms ping to destination. However, the amount of package loss is greatly reduced ( PL% columns and the red bars) The WiFi sample taken previously and the new one differ in that the package loss for Hop 6 is greatly reduced. Graph using 3rd party server and VPN VPN (SG): 84.17.39.173 3rdParty (SG): 185.128.24.225 Target (SG): 92.223.86.86 I suppose pinging from my VPN means that it first goes from ME to VPN. ME <-> VPN traceroute seems to hop via Hong-Kong (SG<-> HK <-> SG). Post was published earlier here https://superuser.com/questions/1805724/identify-latency-problems-to-gaming-server

Hello, I have a bit of a problem with my ISP, they frequently get problems on their line that causes network to drop. Swapping ISPs is not an answer, because they're the best option I have. I also have a phone from which I can transfer internet connection via USB. The problem is, if I have to transfer a big file on my main network and if it drops, I lose all my progress, and have to swap to phone connection. Is there any way to do it automatically, so I never lose internet connection?

So I live in Indonesia, things maybe different here, I don't know. But all I need to do is open a port so I can access my server remotely. Because the ISP provide a modem/router you must request port forwarding from them. But then they tell you its only for private IP, so I cannot open ports to the actual internet. In order to do so i need to upgrade to a dedicated plan, which is usually for big businesses. And as you imagine it's expensive. And yet I have cctv access.. So somethings not right here Is this common? Or is there a way around this? Another option I'd like to utilise is VPNing into my server but that seems to fail also. Maybe for the same reason.. Looking for any advice to access my server remotely. I'll upgrade if I have to. But it just seems unnecessary.

Revisiting this old topic I posted about an year ago, but lets try something different. The problem: So I have a motherboard with dual Ethernet ports, each connected to 2 different routers belonging to 2 different ISPs using 2 completely different upstream ISPs. So, one of my connections is fiber but low bandwidth; great for playing games but not great for uploading or streaming. That's where my other connection comes in, it's copper-twin cable but with much more bandwidth. Can I, in anyway, make certain apps use one or the other by manually setting them? Like OBS, Steam, Browsers etc on the copper while games on Fiber? Theoretically it should be possible?

A couple weeks ago I upgraded to gigabit internet. It is FTTH and I got a modem with it. I hate it with a passion, the interface is clunky, the options are hidden or just non-existent (for example I can't change the default DNS server) and the Wi-Fi is so weak It doesn't reach the next room (100% transmission power) I mention this because I suspect it might be the source of my problems. Since the upgrade my ping in games is like this: stays at a relatively constant 50 and then jumps to 90-130 for a second, then drops back, and it is repeated every 10-30 second or so. I measured it on ping-test.org on two different computers both wired and wireless, the result was in-line with what I saw in game. The connection is PPPoE, but I didn't have this issue when I had slower package and a router I bought. That router I just mentioned now serves as an access point, so I have Wi-Fi in the house, but it doesn't seem like it had to do anything with my problem. The ISP refuses to do anything about it and I'm out of ideas as well.

Hi, I am looking for information regarding setting up my own ISP. There fiber in my town, however it is very limited in where it is. I was hoping to take advantage of available funding grants to do a feasibility study and then perhaps set up an ISP that will offer fiber to the home. I do understand that there is a significant cost to this, but I don't see the local cable provider or Telus doing anything in the next 20 years to expand fiber offerings. Any ideas on where to start would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am trying to set up a non-air router(switching from my ISP F2000 router) to the netgear R8000 unfortunately when i connect the router up the internet light stays orange. I have tried advanced settings and entering the username which is eir@eir.ie and password:broadband1. These are apparently provided by the ISP apparently to use with the router as SSiop. The F2000 router when plugged in the same way works perfectly. I even ran just an Ethernet cable from the old ISP router to the Netgear box and no result the same problem with no internet connection. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking to get fiber internet to my home, I am wondering if there Is there a switch that can take the raw fiber cable input into a switch/router rack mountable unit that is fully managed that I can purchase and setup so that I can potentially add other devices over fiber exclusively in the future in my rack like say a server and avoid using an RJ45 connector. I am new to the fiber space so I'm trying to learn what I can and I want to know if this is even something that is possible. Thanks in advance! *EDIT* going to get the fiber internet through Century Link (it was mentioned that could help with finding a solution)

Hello, the situation is that I have been using a certain ISP for quite a while, but their service is slow, I usually get around 15-20mbps with them, but it often can go lower and I am unable to even watch youtube videos on 1080p or even 720p. Also that ISP sometimes had really bad ping spikes. So we recently got a call from another ISP and decided to give it a try (It's a trial for 14 days). The internet was working beautifully on the first day, I got on average around 36mbps and it even spiked to 60mbps at one point, which I have never experienced with the old internet. So the internet continued to work well on the second-day staying around 30-40mbps, and I didn't experience a lot of issues until 9pm my time when the internet almost suddenly cut out. I did a troubleshoot and it said that "DNS server isn't working" or something along the lines. And this has been going on for quite a while even this morning. The internet from time to time just goes from 30-40mbps speed to just around a few (around under 0 to 30kbps) and I can't open a single website. The only way I can fix it is to wait until the internet is back up or restart the router, and even that only helps for like 5-10 minutes. I have already contacted my ISP and all that he could say is that maybe I don't have good enough reception and that I need to place it closer or higher near the window. The problem is that I have already done all of those things and they really don't affect me much. But could this actually be a bad reception issue? Could I even get 30+ Mbps if I have bad reception? The current internet is 4G, it is and Huawei router, and it is connected to pc by an ethernet cable. Also most of the speed test I did on the OOKLA speed test website (When I can open it), but when I cant it also shows me current internet usage in the router website (that's where I got speed reading when the internet isn't working, it also sometimes goes even in just bits per second).

Hey guys, basically I live in university accommodation and my ISP is Ask4 and they did some maintenance 2 weeks ago, but since then Google seems to think I'm in Ireland even though I'm in the UK. Until today even my IP location was being shown as Galway in Ireland, although it still shows as Galway on some sites but majority show Sheffield or Birmingham on other sites, which are both in the UK so I don't mind it not being 100% accurate, when I search for "What is my IP location?" on Google. It's just a pain the butt, any help would be appreciated.

I wanted to ask if this is possible. I have my main ISP with its modem connected to my main router. I have an extra router that could use a mobile data. I wanted to connect my extra router to my main router so if ever the main ISP will have technical difficulties, I could use it as a back-up. I don't want to pull out the lan cable connected to my PC every time I switch from my main router to my extra router. Is there a way that I could just switch between the two without pulling out the lan cable on my PC?

I’m thinking of buying a 3rd party router for my sky broadband hub. It is ADSL. Is this possible? (The answers I found online were confusing.)

Hey there, So i found this Router in my basement and i was wondering, if I somehow could use it. Is there any way I can use one of the LAN ports to get access to the internet without using the DSL RJ connector. But instead using a Ethernet port? Happy for any help, Thomas

I only play csgo on this pc and had it finetuned towards only cs. I recently just did a fresh reset to my pc to the newest version of windows and now it feels like there's a lot more lag. I'm only pinging about a 10ms variation from what I usually got on the servers that I typically play but its a constant up and down, its never stable anymore. The things is that with every 1ms increase its feels like 10, so when I hit the the top which is 10 extra ms than before it literally feels like an extra 100 and I can barely play. It will come down for maybe 3-5 min then back up for another 3-5min. Am I missing a driver, is something now conflicting with my internet, Am I missing something that I finetuned in the past, or is this my isp fucking with me and its only coincidence that it started happening right after I reset my pc. Any help would be greatly apricated. Old Speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/nwSZzA5j0sKHUBhJkXYDmC5 New Speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/LVxt6M0nPfo6wvghF7ckRdI

Hello. So I have this problem/conflict that i need help for. Thanks in Advance THE PROBLEM: I just moved into a new room in my house were the Wi-Fi strength is poor from the main router (Router 1). Therefore, I got a cheap router (Router 2) and drilled some holes to pass an ethernet cable from the main router (Router 1) to the second one (Router 2) But my parents have this tendancy of switching off the main router while I am gaming [:(] which renders the second router useless. So, I am looking for a way to use Router 2 even when Router 1 is switched off. And for above mentioned reasons the method should be passive and thus cannot be turned off. Also when Router 1 is turned on everything should remain working as before. (as other devices connect to Router 1 only) The ISP provided cable is plugged into the WAN of Router 1 and requires PPPoE Username and Password (which I know). The ethernet cable used is plugged into the LAN of Router 1 and WAN of Router 2. Router 1 - D-Link DIR-600M Router 2 - Tenda N3 N150

Hey community members! I am a new 18 wheeler driver that loves my video games! Sadly though I am running in to a horrible issue of not being able to find a good ISP/internet solution so that I can consistently play them. Has anyone an issue similar and know of a good way to get internet, or have any good idea to try?

Good day LTT forum, I have a home network reliability problem and am trying to add some redundancy, and would like your advice on how good this plan seems (including input from those who have done something similar). Problem: My ISP, the only broadband provider to my house, is unreliable and has no incentive to improve their service. Due to my semi-remote location, LTE signal for at least cell phones (Verizon and T-Mobile towers tested) is weak. This impacts me because I work remotely and downtime is costly. I have asked every local ISP for wired and wireless options, and they either don't provide service, it's dialup-only, or they didn't even understand what I was looking for. Current Setup: I have an all-Ubiquiti network layout in my house (USG for the router, notable for having 2 WAN ports, an 8 port switch, and 2 wireless APs). Critical gear (work laptop, main desktop) is wired directly to the switch. All home users' cell phones are enabled to use wifi calling and can communicate effectively even if they get no signal. I have many reasons for not wanting to use a phone or a 'hotspot', both for performance reasons and the task of manually failing over each device to that new 'network' during an outage, along with pricing concerns (I am trying to keep monthly fees low and flexible). Proposed Solution: While searching for any possible way to essentially "add an antenna and a second connection" to my router, I came across this: https://unifi-lte.ui.com/ It's essentially exactly what I am looking for, an antenna that plugs into my network and acts as a secondary WAN. The pricing seems very reasonable for how much data I would use during an outage state (given numerous prior 'tests'). This solution uses AT&T LTE in the US, which claims to have 4G coverage for my location (not tested) Concerns: Location. My network closet is currently in the basement where LTE signal is the weakest. I'm guessing I would need to install a high-gain antenna or hope that AT&T LTE is coverage is solid. Connection: This wasn't clear from the instructions; would I plug this device into the second WAN port on my USG Router, or any available PoE port of the switch? Routing: If the answer to question 2 is "PoE port on switch", would I be correct in assuming that this device would do normal "router" tasks or work with the existing USG? Failover time: to anyone who has used this solution, how long does this failover time take? Do I have to take any manual actions? Questions: Do you all think that this is a good option? Has anyone else facing a similar concern used any alternatives as redundancy? Am I missing anything here? Thank you in advance!

Hi, I'm having problems with my internet connection. Some of the symptoms: Some pages load slowly or don't load at all for the first time. After waiting a bit and doing some refreshes, it usually loads, but it's still slow sometimes. My samsung tablet could not update because it could not connect to the update server to check for updates It could take tens of minutes to launch League of Legends. When I try to launch it, it usually brings up something that indicates that it's loading (e.g. the Riot Client logo), but most of the time it just goes away and does seemingly nothing. If I close the Riot Client from the task manager, I can start it again from the beginning. When the game client loads, it usually can't load the things inside it, usually with different errors. I'm attaching a screenshot of one of the error messages. The speedtest is usually not working. I tried it using the webpage, using the Windows application and using the Android application. I'm attaching a screenshot of the error messages. However, I can watch 4K videos on youtube without distruction, for example. The first symptom I noticed was the one with the League of Legends, and I thought that it's the fault of my PC, but the same thing happens on both my laptop and PC using my home internet, and it does not if I use my mobile data, for example. The speedtests are also working with my mobile data connection. What did I try: restart the router several times test it with both wifi and ethernet (using different ethernet ports as well) test it with different devices check the router if there is any port/ip adrress is blocked wait a few days hoping that it would go away I'm also attaching the result of pinging google.com on windows (with the "ping -l 512 -n 100 www.google.com" command). It had fluctuation, but no packet loss. My internet speed, according to my provider: 500Mbps down, 22Mbps up. I contacted my ISP a few days ago and all they said was that they will look into it, but I don't expect anything from it anymore. Note that I'm using another router in my room connected to the modem provided by the isp, both for it's switch and ap property (to get better wifi here, and to be able to use more devices with cable). I don't think that it can cause the problem, but you never know. Questions: What could be the source of the problem? What could I tell to my provider to look into? This might not be relevant, but I used to have the internet from the same provider at my previous house. Back there, I had a problem with not being able to connect to a vpn provided by my work place. They solved the problem and they told me that the problem was that I had in ipv6 address but not an ipv4, and some services require it. Could it be the problem this time again? Now I'm able to connect to the same vpn. Thanks in advance, Botond ping result.txt

Good evening everyone, I've got an issue with a new pfsense router I'm setting up in my apartment and I'm wondering if you might be able to and interested in giving me a hand with an issue I'm having. I have ESXi running on one of my servers, and a vm of pfsense on that. My ISP locks each apartment down to one MAC address per apartment, so this evening I gave them a call and changed the MAC address to the one on the dedicated NIC I'll be using for my WAN interface. I set up pfsense so it's all up and running and visible on the LAN, however for some reason I can't figure out, It won't connect to the WAN. If you have any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated! Here's the breakdown of the setup: My isp jack is plugged into a dedicated single port 1gig NIC with the MAC ending in 63:e3. I have ESXi set with only pfsense using that NIC. In the virtual switch, I made sure the mac address is the same one that ends in 63:e3 In pfsense, I set it up to be the gateway with the wan port being the NIC that ends in 63:e3, and made sure to set the MAC address in pfsense to 63:e3. On a completely different NIC, I set up the lan. Pfsense boots, acts normal, can manage everything on the lan, but can't connect to the WAN. I can see pfsense receives one packet from my isp, as pfsense keeps sending more and more. I have tried everything I can think of however it still won't connect, and my isp is absolute that it's not on their end. Thank you so much for you time! Samuel

Hey everyone. I'm going to try word this as best as I can so it makes sense, currently I have a internet provider that I pay a monthly contract which gives me a router. I wanted to buy an external router like the ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 to replace my current network and save money as I'm paying £76pm for 250Mbps Download and 35Mbps Upload. Is it possible to just buy one of these routers and completely replace my current network setup or is it more complicated?

I recently went from 100Mbps up/down (fiber) to 1Gbps; However my Computer isn't getting that speed, no matter what i do it's stuck at 100Mbps; from what i know, it could be the Router, the Cable, or my computer. The cable is Cat5e that they installed, so i don't think it would be limited to 100Mbps? The router is putting out 1Gbps or close as i can get close enough to that on my phone/wifi. (And it is a gigabit router, a super expensive one at that) [isp provided] My computer should be able to get 1Gbps as i have a motherboard with a gigabit port, and i even bought a Gigabit Pcie card, but yet it's all stuck at 100Mbps still.... All my network drivers are up to date. I tried setting it to 1Gbps full duplex as maybe auto negotiation was messing up, but still stuck at 100Mbps... also turned off some features i thought could be interfering, like "auto disable gigabit", "energy-effecient ethernet", "green ethernet", "power saving mode" My motherboard is a B450 Tomahawk Max, and the gigabit card i bought was a EDUP PCIE (model "ep9602") Please, if anyone could help me figure this out, it would be greatly appreciated... At the moment my only solution is that i ordered a 5ghz Long range wifi card, so hopefully i could get over 100Mbps on that... My network status: My Computer's speed test: My Phone's 5Ghz speed test:
