My 8TB Ironwolf is looking a bit full (500GB left) so I'm looking for addtional storge. My current drives line-up are Copy 1*: 4TB desktop (1282 Power on 14k hours) + 4TB WD Passport External (Both I got in 2017-2018 when I suffered a data loss but BackBlaze saved my bacon) *The 4TB is always powered with my PC, I do sometimes plug in the external one if I need data from that. Copy 2: 8TB Ironwolf (1056 power on 3k hours, got it 1.5 year ago as a birthday gift from my BF) Copy 3: Backblaze backup of both copy 1 and 2 So I probably should look at 10TB-12TB range, maybe even bigger so I don't have to buy another drive in 2 years. I was considering buying a second 8TB Iron wolf (2300 sek), so my storge would look like Copy 1*: 4TB desktop (1282 Power on 14k hours) + 8TB old Ironwolf Copy 2: 4TB WD Passport External + 8TB new Ironwolf But seems like a terrible idea given both the 4TB desktop drive and WD Passport had command timeouts (freezing, the desktop drive had pending sectors, but looks like it is stable now) Bigger drives, like Toshiba MG07 12TB is only 500sek more expensive (25% )(10TB drive are terrible value here...) While Exos seires are also quite attractive X16 12TB at 3149sek, 14TB have a 2893sek available but I don't know it's exact model number. I'm not getting NAS just yet, since I use BackBlaze (Back Blaze don't support backing up NAS)...but I might need it in future since my HDD bays are already full (Swap backup drives )... with existing one 8GB drive, not sure which size might be best to avoid losing capacity using RAID, like if I buy a 12TB drive now and and a second 12TB drive next with a 3/4 bay NAS, I will lose 8TB if I use RAID 5 Also, why these enterprise drives are more expensive than Ironwolf/WD Red Plus? Should I go with Enterpise Drives like Exos.MG07 or Exos instead of Ironwolf/WD Red Plus? Had anyone used Toshiba's drives? So I'm not sure which to buy... both MG07 12TB and Exos X16 14TB are very good value, but maybe I should push a bit more getting a 16GB Exos X18? (but looks like if I get another 16TB next would lost me 16TB space...) The drives are (I'm leaning towards 12TB Ironwolf): 12TB Toshiba MG07 MG07ACA12TE at 2790 sek or (Ironwolf ST120000VN08 2780sek) 14TB Seagate Exros X16 (model number unknown from Proshop.se) 2893 Sek 16TB Seagate Exos X18 ST16000NM000J at 3190 sek A quick bit of RAID calculation (RAID 5) 8+8+8 = 16TB space 8TB protection 8+12+12 = 16TB space 8TB protection 8Tb unused 8+16+16 =16TB space 8TB protection 16Tb unused Of course, Synology seems able to use all drives using their SHR Raid... Won't rule out using Synology but that is also an option.

I’m planning to set up a home NAS. it will be used for: 1. to replace my google drive. 2. to dump my photos and videos from my iphone 3. To do some torrenting 4. About 2-3 users 5. For backup maybe as time machine for my mac and backup storage for my desktop. questions: 1. do i really need to consider raid 1? I mean it’s for personal use. Files aren’t really THAT important but i don’twant them gone either. To make it as reliable as a google drive, is raid necessary? 2. Ironwolf 4tb 5900rpm x 2 on raid 1 on a ds220j OR ironwolf PRO 8tb 7200rpm on a ds120j?

Hello, are these sounds normal for a new drive? This noise is happening when I write... Sounds at --> 00:02, 00:07 and 00:12 (phone was pretty close and handles the sound more loudly than it actually is - depending on your volume) As you can see it is a Seagate IronWolf PRO 10TB 3,5" drive. I didn't use 3,5" disk in years, so I am concern about any noise it makes. Well of course I will use it, but before I start dumping in my precious, what should I do? What I mean by that is: Should I use some tool to check sectors? Or it is good enough to just format it (uncheck quick formatting)? Maybe check the SMART using CrystalDisk Info? Or maybe use Seatools to do a long generic? (Its a Seagate Iron Wolfe)

Hi! With the recent situation being what it is I've been looking more and more into doing more freelancing work and with the amount of work I've been doing from home I've also realised how bad my backup and redundancy situation is. To solve this I'm playing with the thought of building a NAS (that can be extended into a plex and/or light render) server. From what I've been able to learn from reading, unRAID is a decent choice in my case as I value the expansion capablilities quite highly and don't have the time to spend more hours than necessary in the terminal. As of right now I have roughly 4tb (including some minor redundancy) on my workstation. With an increase of ~500gb since christmas I have been aiming for ~6tb usable space on the NAS but the 4tb drives appear to have a better value over 3tb drives. Here are the parts I thought of using: - ASUS Prime B450-A - Ryzen 3 3200G - Corsair SF450 - 16gb DDR4-2666 Samsung/Kingston/Crucial ECC - 3x4tb IronWolf ( expandable to a max of 6x4tb in the future ) When it comes to the case I get a kick out of building custom ones and with access to a workshop comes great power something, something... The main points that I would like feedback on are: - Is ECC memory worth it? - Memory requirements? - Found a deal on SkyHawk discs that are cheaper than IronWolves, worth it? - Cooling requirements? Would like to go for as much of a sleeper look as possible Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi All, I'm looking to purchase some hard drives for a 4-bay OWC Thunderbay 4 (Thunderbolt 3), I imagine 4x 2TB would be sufficient, creating an 8TB working array in RAID 0. The footage would be backup up to another storage array to protect against any potential drive failures. What functional benefits would I see from using 7200rpm (WD Red Pro/IronWolf Pro) vs. 5400/5900rpm drives (WD Red/IronWolf)? The advertised data rates don't seem to be that much of an improvement so I'm curious to know if the seek times would affect the responsiveness of the timeline, etc. In addition, I can pick up 2TB IronWolf drives for £59.99 each, whereas IronWolf Pro drives are £94.99 each. Hello, I am planning on upgrading most of my house with UniFi cameras, cat 7 and a new switch. I thought It was a good idea to add a nas to my setup at this time as well . So far the only component I’m set on is getting three Seagate 6 TB IronWolf, the rest I don’t really mind. (These seem good for the price and reliable) In a previous post (https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1025826-building-nas-part-list-and-advice-needed/) I started to narrow down the options. I need this nas to be able to be a: - Plex server (might have to transcode video files) - UniFi video server for multiple POE cameras - file server for Mac and Pc - down the line if possible i would like to be able to use the server as a scratch disk to edit on fcpx off of it (not high priority, this might be a task for another server build) So far I have been only considering Unraid (which I have heard is slow) and FreeNas but if there is another suggestion I can try that. I’m not great with command line stuff but I can learn if necessary prefer a GUI where I can. I wanted to try and keep it cheep so excluding the drives I want it to come to no more then £400 but £200 would be best if posable. I don’t mind used equipment as long as it would be somewhat reliable. Thanks

Hi, I want to have RAID 6 in my PC. I decided to go with 6x6TB HDD. And because I will use it in my PC I dont want it to be that loud. I decided to use Seagate Exos 7E8 or Ironwolf. I have looked on Seagate webpage but cant see the noise of Exos drives in specifications. I would like to now which of these two is louder? BTW: Drives are the same price. Thanks for answers. ?

So I was about to upgrade my home server setup with 3 new 10TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro (ST10000NE0008). I neatly installed them into the disk bay along with some cable management. I then remembered I had to write down the serial numbers of each disk... ironically in case of warranty claim or data rescue. So I lifted up the disk bay and I guess the cable management was a bit too tight so the sata cable ripped out the port on the disk. Too bad the warranty doesn’t cover stupidity. I have however reached out to Seagate to see if they can do some goodwill or if they can at least sell me a pcb controller. If anyone has a broken Ironwolf 10TB but a functioning pcb please let me know if it is for sale! Also, if you know a bit more about these disks, advice on compatible pcb controllers would be much appreciated!

So I was looking into the possibility of getting a hard drive for mass storage due to my paranoia of wearing out my single 250GB SSD that I've put into my system, which contains everything from the OS to my games. A quick look on Amazon and I come across both Seagate Barracuda and IronWolf drives, and I read into the IronWolf drive and found out it's used for NAS systems, whereas the Barracuda is for consumers. The major differences there are between the two are: • 1TB Barracuda = £36 / 1TB IronWolf = ££45 • 1TB Barracuda = 7200RPM / 1TB IronWolf = 5900RPM* • 1TB Barracuda = 210MB/s / 1TB IronWolf = 180MB/s *There's also an IronWolf Pro which is 7200RPM but the minimum is 2TB. In classic fashion, I have some questions: 1. For a normal consumer gamer like me, should I even be considering an IronWolf? 2. Since the IronWolf is for NAS, does this in theory mean it lasts longer and wears less than the Barracuda? 3. Seagate or WD?

hi, i would like to turn my gaming pc (which i dont game at all) to a NAS/home/plex media server, whatever you call it. Its a i3-8100 / 960 evo m.2 nvme ssd / gtx 1060. I would like to add a HDD to store media files where i will access from Plex Media Clients , access files over/outside network and so on. I can add 6 sata3 drives so i start with one 4 TB drive and add more and turn it into a RAID configuration. I am looking for these; Seagate Barracuda WD Red Seagate Ironwolf I know everyone, for a server use, recommends NAS drives like RED and Ironwolf however i will always keep a backup of the media. Is there a big difference between Barracuda and NAS drives? i am considering Barracuda bcs of its price and low noise. tia

I'm currently looking at their 2-6 tb models, preferably their 2tb but apparently their speed increases along with their capacities which is why I'm also considering 4-6 tb. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on these two line ups for a duo raid 0 setup.
