Summary Canadian tech recycler Geep (the same on that refused to show Linus their warehouse in Scrapyard Wars) has been caught fixing and reselling iPhones that it claimed to be recycling. Apple wants to take Geep to court over this because they claim this constitutes over $31 million CAD in damages. Geep says they recognize these devices were stolen from their recycling department, but denys that the 3 employees who were "refurbishing" these iPhones were doing so with the companies consent. Apple refutes that, noting that the three people in question we're also executives of the Geep company. Quotes My thoughts It's really strange for Apple to allege that devices that were dedicated for a landfill (because let's be honest, recycling is a total joke), somehow those devices being fixed up and resold is cutting into their profits. The argument seems to be that customers were buying these devices instead of brand new iPhones, but the models in question are largely not in production anymore. I dunno, I get that it's illegal, I just don't see why. Sources https://9to5mac.com/2020/10/01/apple-catches-electronics-recycler-illegally-reselling-over-100000-iphones-ipads-apple-watches/

I was doing some thinking after a moderator pointed out that i was not allowed to talk about "how" to install OSX on non-apple hardware in my article about my hackintosh. It got me wondering what exactly about it is illegal. For example, OSX is a free download from the app store, which requires a legit mac in the first place, so is any piracy taking place here ? Secondly, TMx86 seems to indicate that using his particular tools will somehow give you immunity to any legal issues. And Finally, does it actually say anywhere in Apple's EULA that you are breaking the law by installing OSX on your own hardware, that you own ? Or is it more a suggestion that you won't receive updates or support if you do so ? The whole thing seems like a really grey area, totally falls into the category of "ill do what i damn well please with the hardware that i bought with my own money, it's mine" Can anyone shed some light on this ?

Here's a quick question for you - although I have a slight suspicion I already know the answer: Is it illegal to access Geo-blocked content/services - even if you are willing to pay for the service? A lot of people would assume - let say Netflix for example, restricts content based on location. I know I can use a VPN to get around this. But that is not the only problem when using a paid service. If I am willing to pay full price for the service - even though it is not available in my country, is it classed as legal or illegal to do such a thing? I'm assuming its illegal but would like some information/input as to why. Thanks for reading.

Windows, Spying, and a Twitter Rant (bold emphasis added) What Microsoft is doing is making self-profiting and corporate usage of Windows owners' personally-owned hardware, their software licenses, their electricity supply, their processing power, their time, their data, and their personal activity. Everyone should be aware that what Microsoft is doing is already fully illegal, and that it is called Unjust Enrichment. It is no different than if a person hooks up their digital currency-mining systems to their neighbours electricity, or if a politician steals millions of taxpayer dollars, which amounts to only a few cents from each person. It is no different than if a stockbroker skims 0.2% off all the trades they do and keeps it for themselves. It is theft, and it is unjust enrichment. Also, people who think Google and Facebook do the same thing are wrong in thinking so. When you visit an online website, you're entering another person's owned space, and using their owned hardware, software, bandwidth, in exchange for an interaction to occur between your system and it. It is a choice to transmit relevant data - and if those places choose compute valuable information from the result of those interactions with their own space, hardware, and software, that's for them to do. But what Microsoft is doing is entering into your private, non-public spaces, which belong only to you, and generating data using your space, hardware, software, and electricity, that they send to their servers and use to profit their corporation's shareholders. It is no different than someone spreading a virus that uses everybody's CPU and GPU processing power to mine digital coins, that are then deposited into the digital coin wallet of the person who made the virus. It is incomparable to what Google and Facebook do. It is the difference of a bank having security cameras within their bank, which record people who visit their bank, and that same bank having their security cameras in people's private homes, recording their activity in their own homes. The former is an entitlement of the bank, whereas the latter is illegal, and is a violation of people's private spaces and the concept of sovereignty of the individual. Every aspect about what Microsoft is doing is already established in law as being illegal everywhere else in society. But, for some reason, people are taking a long time to have it seep in and be understood that it's entirely the same thing when done via software, and from a well-known corporation. It's an example of the masses being blind to what they haven't yet given full thought to. And those brushing it off are no different than an African-American slave justifying their enslavement by a white slave-owner by saying "everybody is doing it", as if that would somehow justify it. Such people are irresponsible with their own lives, and are the enemy of every person who does not want to be a slave, and who wants their personal life to be theirs. When you allow a corporation to choose what to do with your own stuff, you surrender those aspects of yourself to the corporation, and the corporation becomes the judge of you. Remember, when a politician steals millions of tax dollars, which is only a few cents from each person, they go to jail. The laws and the situation are certainly no different when it comes to corporations like Microsoft.

Heyo, So recently, my Corsair H100i V2 failed, pump and fans dont work, yada yada yada. So i thought if i go directly through Corsair, i might get a better response... NOPE, they refuse to RMA my cooler due to insufficient proof of purchase, apparently, multiple snips of the order details page and a tax invoice is not sufficient. This is illegal in Australia, as a bank statement is enough, they claim they cannot see the retailers name, but is clearly shown on the invoice and snips. I have drafted a letter to the ACCC onbudsman (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) as a formal complaint against Corsair, for breaches in consumer law (all businesses selling to Australians MUST abide by these laws and face massive penalties - up into the millions of dollars - and cannot be over ruled by EULA's, Business policies or otherwise) Was Curious if anyone else has had poor service/tech support from corsair, i contacted the retailer today and got an instant RMA approval, so ill get my money back, but am not pleased with Corsair's response/service

The US Department of Justice and Europol finaly shut down the two largest Dark Web Marketplaces, AlphaBay and Hansa. This comes after the Department of Justice taking control of the two websites during June and July of this year. After having been monitoring activity and transactions since their being Siezed. Now that the Feds have intel on the over 200,000 members and 40,000 vendors, they will be able to track down and sieze other illegal sites, and hopefully lead them to the criminals behind the illigal activities. The US attorny General, Jeff Sessions, states: International and National Security agencies will work in coordination to fight the rise of online crime, especialy prominent on the Dark Web. allong with, the head of Europol adds: In the place of the sites, a message is now displayed indicating that the websites were siezed and controlled since June/July: Sources: https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/14/15975140/alphabay-dark-web-drug-marketplace-police-shutdown-silk-road https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jul/20/dark-web-marketplaces-alphabay-hansa-shut-down http://wccftech.com/feds-shut-largest-dark-web-market/

Hey everyone! So, say you are in a country where torrenting movies and such can actually get you in trouble, so you use a VPN to protect against that (to some extent) Does it matter which country's server you choose to connect to? For example, if I'm in Norway and use Private Internet Access VPN to torrent movies and such, is it important that I choose a server in a country that doesn't care much about illegal downloads, or do I just choose the server with the best connection (for example Denmark, which also cracks down on illegal downloading) and I'm good? I couldn't find this question asked anywhere else after multiple searches, so here I am Thanks!

So I've bought a few graphics cards from nvidia - a 780, 1080 ti, and a 1050 bc I needed steady frame rates on my computer, and found they worked kinda perfectly but after drivers version 400 and up somehow microsoft might have said to nvidia that they wanted them to sign their apps through the ms app store, so they did, however in that process, they broke unofficial support for non-HDR 8 monitors. I... having an amva panel saw that the digital vibrancy slider was broken after they switched to the windows 10 store control panel app, maybe to sell more g-sync monitors with official HDR8 and HDR10 capabilities, but the thing is.. this is breaking millions of monitors official capabilities that use AMVA panels and I haven't found a fix for it bc nvidia drivers ship with the slider broken to show grey gamma instead of official pitch black to make people think their displays are inferior to the new ones they keep adding to their g-sync official list. This might be a way to make people buy new stuff but it comes off as shady and my monitor is perfectly fine and their graphics card don't actually run 4k well and im just tired of them deleting my posts on their forum when i talk to them about it, so I will probably switch back to amd and hope this isn't another money making heist like GPP where they forced vendors to be nvidia exclusive only back in 2018 only to be found by LTT to be committing illegal activity against AMD that they weren't aware of. I think this is crappy for everyone that has a current gen nvidia card and a non-hdr monitor and this is prolly also illegal and they definitely should be sued if not Microsoft for causing it, and would like to know what you guys think on this. after v 400 + drivers the digital vibrancy slider has almost no effect.

This is going to be a little difficult to understand, so I have shortened it down to what you need to know so you lovely people can help. So, I am helping my mother create her new Real Estate company. I created a website on Squarespace (cause it looks fantastic ;)) and off I went, making sure everything was protected with a password. However, we bought into some software/RE stuff for our company that is industry standard for where I live, but it is packaged with a website builder online (whether you want it or not, and they do most of the work). I took off all the passwords for these people so they could have a look at my site. When they looked at it, said that it looked fantastic, and said they would replicate it as closely as possible... The next Monday (which is the one that has just passed), we got a text from an inside source at the company my mother had just been fired from. They said that their management had just looked at our website... So I freaked out, went onto Squarespace, and hid everything from public view. However, nothing on that Analytics page said anything about anyone viewing certain pages that this person said they had. Fast forward to today. The website these people created looks not even half as good as the one I did (not saying mine was amazing - their was horrendous) and after requesting they make some changes, they half-assed it and came back to say that I have to do everything myself (including things only they can do because their builder is balls). I was working on it for a while, but had to stop when my mother's new colleagues turned up for a scheduled training session. During the training session, one of them googled our company name, and found that our demo website (with private, sensitive information that definitely should not be displayed), created by the people who sold us this package, was on the front page. I checked the activity log (after a while of trying to find it), and sure enough, there was activity on the very same day we got this insider information. So, these people from my mother's old company, were able to see who she was going to be working with (including someone who had just quit working for them to come join my mother) and our sales strategy, including other things. Other than being absolutely furious at this company, is there anything we can legally do if this causes damage to my mother's company (which very well could happen, considering we are still a while away from going live)? It took the company a few hours to sort out this issue, but they have made it private now. TL;DR I created a website for our new company, made it private. This other company asked to replicate our website to make it easier for us later on, so I made mine public. Got a text from someone we know that their management had just seen the website, so I made mine private again. Found out the website they viewed was the one this other company had replicated, even though it was meant to be a demo and we thought it was completely private. Now other companies in our city know what our sales plan is, who is in our team, and what we will be doing. Is this as big of a problem as I think it is, or should I just let it blow over now that this company has fixed the issue and made it private? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. I understand that this is a very specific issue, and know that I probably won't get much help.

Until now, I've downloaded all my operating systems illegally. Now I want to better my life, but I can't quite figure it out. The very moment I purchased the Windows 10 key, my Windows 7 discovered it was not legit. Now, I can't upgrade to Windows 10 because my Windows 7 isn't legit. I could of course reset my PC and just install W10 plain on a clean HDD, but I like my stuff and having to re-install it would be a major pain. I've searched the web a little but no-one seems to have a solution. Does anyone here know a way?

Hello guys, I am currently in a very bad situation where my manager wants me to build a computer that would have windows 10 pro on it then would be running 4 Hyper-V virtual machine that would all be running a pirated version of windows 10 pro. That computer would be used in a business environment at one of our client's location. They want me to do that because it's the only way he found to stay competitive against our competitor. Would anyone be able to link me to the official documentation that I could show to my manager's boss about the consequences if they were to get caught? (or if I was to anonymously notice Microsoft of this fact myself) Please note that I have been asked to pirate the windows operating system on multiple machines for other clients in the past as well, though I have done so under pressure of immediate termination of my employment. Cheers.

The Florida state legislature is considering a bill that would make it illegal to run any website or service anonymously, if the site fits a vague category of “disseminat[ing]” “commercial” recordings or videos—even the site owner’s own work. Could set a very bad precedent if passed. The full story can be seen here.

So I was watching the archive and was thinking, I have a TV subscription that I pay monthly which enables me to watch movies and series as well as record them so I can watch them later or re-watch them. Most of the movies and series are not evenprovided in 1080p, so I prefer downloading higher quality ones from... sources.... I find it to be more convenient as well. So my question is, is it still wrong? In my opinion I see nothing wrong with it, however I would like to hear other peoples views on this.

Reporters without Boarders is a non-profit organization which fights for the freedom of information and freedom of the press. They are known for their "Press Freedom Index" ranking which tracks how free the press is to spread information in different countries. They have consult status at the United Nations and was formed in 1985. Both the US and the UK appear in their newly published "Enemies of the Internet 2014" list. The full list is: The United States The United Kingdom India China North Korea Russia Syria Iran Hopefully this will be a wake up call for a lot of people. Having the title "world champion of surveillance" (The UK) is not exactly a positive thing... When your country is on the same list as North Korea and China (not to mention the other ones) then you are doing something very very wrong. TL:DR: In NZ no phones are locked, if we buy on contract we get a subsidy off of a phone dependent on the amount paid and term of the contract, prices are decent(ish) and the US should adopt this because they have no reason to lock phones, and there should be a law passed to make it illegal to lock phones, not illegal to unlock phones. Almost every week if not day, I hear people go on about how horrible the telco's treat people in the US. And by far the biggest issue is the locking of phones. I was watching an old episode of The Tek last night, where they were talking about making it illegal to unlock phones, and this sparked me to write a post, because I think that's the complete opposite thing to make law. You see, here in New Zealand many years ago, it was in fact going to become a law to make it illegal for Telco's to LOCK phones! As far as I'm aware such a law never actually went through, as just the threat of it made Telco's decide against the idea. Many years ago there were only really 2 networks, Telecom and Vodafone. Now these are still the 2 major networks, however many other networks, who were mostly focused on cheaper prices sprung up (2Degrees, and Skinny Mobile. Skinny are just telecom but offering cheaper prices to compete with 2Degrees under a different name). Anyway, continuing with the main point. Here in New Zealand, no one locks phones. Although it was thought by many that Vodafone locked phones, however what was really happening was just that Vodafone phones ran on different bands, and therefore often weren't supported on Telecom (and can still sometimes be the case). While we may not have super fast internet, or unlimited caps (internet here is a completely other topic, Imaging living with 30-60GB per month, with speeds of 5-10mbps... That's what most of NZers have), However I am proud to say that the way we do mobile here in New Zealand is where the Telco's in the US, Canada and wherever else should take note from! If you buy a phone in New Zealand from a NZ telco, it's unlocked. Period. So if only one network offers a phone for sale, you can still buy the phone from them, and use it on your favourite network. Either way that Telco has still made some money from you. Now most phones we buy (And every phone I buy and have bought) are bought at regular price, in other words the $649 you guys pay in the US for a contract free, unlocked phone, is what the majority of us pay. However a New iPhone, or latest GS4, or HTC one always costs about $1049NZD so about $870 USD (So stop complaining about the price in the US please, we would love that price!) Alternatively, you can sign up to numerous plans, each of which offers an amount of subsidy off of a phone. So say you want the iPhone, and you want to sign up to a 24 month plan, if you pay for a plan that's $60/Month (All prices in NZD) then you get say a $300 subsidy off the phone. If you want a phone as expensive as the iPhone for free, you're looking at about a $100-$150 plan (yes, we can get the phones for free!). (if you want actual examples of this, check out this webpage to see exact subsidies and prices and what you get in these plans The main thing to remember here is that not a single phone is locked, and really there is no reason for them to be. If you're signing up for a phone on a 24 month plan with a network anyway, the locked phone isn't keeping you on the network, the 24 month plan is. Which you can freely cancel at any time, although paying a hefty fee in the process! I realise that nowadays telcos will often happily unlock your phone once your term is up, but that begs the question of why do it in the first place? Furthermore, it's YOUR PHONE that YOU'VE PAID FOR, and with a contract, you've ended up paying far more for the phone than if you'd bought it unlocked, so why should they have the right to lock something you've bought and now own, to their own network? Also, with launches like the iPhone launch, where availability is so scarce, imagine how much easier it would be to get one when the only decision you'd have to make is the size and colour, unlike now where you need size, colour, network, etc. Making production and distribution harder. Finally, here in New Zealand, with every phone being unlocked, resale value is very high. I can sell my used iPhone 5 for between $700-$800 and spend the extra $250-$350 to upgrade to the new 5S. Although I have to wait quite a few months, because not only does it take a long time to launch here, but we get maybe 1000 phones for the entire country.... it's horrible. This is exactly what the US and everyone else should start doing! It's time to see the light and sort out their act. It's unfortunate that they're so powerful and can do whatever they want, not giving a damn about their customers and just doing everything for the sake of money and to piss people off. I hope this post was informative, and gives everyone out there an idea of what it's like outside of the US, and something to aim for. As everyone complains about the situation, but doesn't really offer any better suggestions or give any good examples. And if you're REALLY sick of the telco's, feel free to join Kim Dotcom over here in New Zealand, we'll welcome you with open arms (And a powhiri... Google / youtube it. hahaha).... If you can understand us ( again, youtube the NZ accent lol). I apologise if this post is a little unstructured and rambly, but I've been babysitting kids all day... the mind turns to mush

Summary Vegas Pro Edit 18 Steam edition was on sale for ARS$14.07 (USD$0.19) in Argentina. As a result, It was removed from the steam marketplace. In the days that followed, users of this steam edition receive a fatal error upon importing or rendering and video source (Error -17). Error -17 is normally a DRM error for Vegas pro, and in the Vegas forums the response from moderators is to ask for a Steam refund and repurchase at the new listing price from their website. Quotes My thoughts The program was bought by many Argentine people through Steam, a reputable marketplace that to promote sales in a country famous for its economic instability had made a regional price bubble, where programs and games where normally available at a decreased price than in other parts of the world. In the event of the mistake by either Steam or Magix, the program was removed temporarily and re-uploaded with an elevated price, but instead of sucking it up, Magix requested that it be removed again and has classified the purchased steam version as pirated software. It is illegal in many countries, and its bad business practice.
