  1. Wondering about that, I just bought a 32GB 2400mhz kit at a steal price.
  2. I am trying to decided between these two CPUs. From the benchmarks I have seen the 8600k is the better buy. I want to buy a nice AiO cooler and in Canada the price difference is about $150. All I really do is game on my pc ( I have a seperate laptop for movies, youtube etc). I have never overclocked but I will with this but my question is a broad question and I appreciate any help.
  3. Hey, I need help finding a cooler for overclocking my i7-860 to 4ghz, I don't want to do any over water cooling but closed loops and air cooling is what I would prefer.
  4. This is a really stupid question, but I'm just curious. Would the Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO be able to perform well with the Intel i7 7700k? I understand I won't be able to overclock with this cooler, but I would look into that later on. Thanks.
  5. Wondering if that'd work. Not a big fan of 10.
  6. Hey guys ! Currently debating if my rig could need an update with the new Coffeelake i7 8700K chip. I'm a music composer using Cubase and mostly creating orchestral music with pretty big projects, including a lot of tracks with VST's (Kontakt/Omnisphere/Diva/Bazille/EZDrummer..) and plugins (Waves, iZotope, FabFilter, Lexicon..). I'm also doing quite a bit of gaming at 1080p/60Hz. I wouldn't consider myself as a hardcore or competitive gamer, I just play games casually, most of them being single player RPG's, FPS's or online multiplayer games like Hearthstone or Overwatch. My current setup is : Proc : i5-4590 (3.3 Ghz) Mobo : MSI Z97 PC Mate RAM : 24GB DDR3 (yeah..) GPU : Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC 4GB OS : Windows 7 x64 While I don't have too much problems running most current games maxed out @1080p/60Hz, I do encounter some limitations when working on big Cubase projects (audio crackles, dropouts, CPU@100% load..). So ! My question is the following : is it worth upgrading at all ? If it is, is it worth upgrading to an i7 8700K or wait a little bit longer and see what Ice Lake has to offer in 2019-2020 ? I'm not sure if the performance gain will significant, that's why I'm not entirely sure if waiting for that could be a good strategy. Thank you for your answers !
  7. Hello everyone, I'm new here and need little help. I'm building my first pc. It'll be used for gaming, montage, rendering videos. Monitor is 4k. I'm planning to oc the cpu at some point. But I feel like Kraken x52 is overkill, and a bit expensive. what do you guys think? I'll really appreciate any advice. Thank you guys in advance.
  8. Hi everyone! This the X99 Xeon Master race, a resource for everyone with X99 systems using E5 series Xeons, or those looking to get an X99 system. I am calling this a subsection of the XCMR started by @Zando Bob, @WhisperingKnickers, @asand1, @Ground, and a few others specifically for X58. Their discussion can be found here as the General X58 Xeon/i7 discussion and I would highly recommend you check them out. For this starting post, I will go into some details about how I got into X99 and the inspiration to create this post, who is welcome here (spoiler alert: pretty much everyone who is interested), and my take on why X99 may or may not be a good option for you. So, let's start! Inspiration So a few days ago, I set up my X99 PC as a secondary machine using an X99 deluxe and a Xeon I got off of ebay. I will include the full story in the spoiler below in case you are interested, but it is long, so you have been warned. Anyway, when I was setting it up, I noticed all kinds of quirks with X99 that made it very dissimilar and unique compared to other platforms that came before and after it (X58, X79, X299). The overclocking method was different, new technologies had been introduced, and some other stuff. I found this very complicated to wrap my head around, and researching it just made me more confused. But how does this relate to my inspiration for this post? Well, as I mentioned before, the General X58 Xeon discussion was my main inspiration for this. I saw the way people were discussing their Xeon overclocks and what methods they used to achieve it and I thought to myself - “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a community of experienced X99 Xeon overclockers that I could talk to?” So that’s exactly why I am trying to start, but instead of Xeon overclockers specifically, just anyone who wants to talk about X99/is interested in it. Who is welcome here? As I just said, my goal is for this to just be a resource for anyone who is interested in X99 and/or E5 xeons that work with it. You do not by any means have to own an X99 PC or a Xeon for it. I will, of course, as the title suggests, accept discussions about i7’s too, as I imagine the majority of those with X99 PC’s in the first place probably bought i7’s for it. Also, when I say X99, I am really referring to most LGA 2011-3 platforms, so C612 counts too. Why X99? Actually, X99 might not be the best option for most people. I would not recommend it as an alternative to X370 or Z370, rather as an alternative for X299 or X399, especially X299. At the moment, X99 is a good option for those looking for the quad-channel memory and increased PCI-e lanes that X299 offers, but don’t want to pay the premium Intel is setting for it. Newegg and other sites are clearing out inventory of a lot of X99 boards, and as a result, you can get them for the price of an-entry level Z370, like I did. These boards still have a lot of the features X299 boards have: NVMe m.2 support, USB 3.1. Gen2, and RGB on the second generation of X99 if that’s your thing. CPUs prices are decent, but there are no Xeons for insanely cheap like X58 and its famous X5650 for $20. You can, however, get a 14-core 2.2ghz ES E5-2695 V3 for $350 on ebay for example, not bad considering the cheapest X299 14-core costs about 4 times as much. So what’s bad about this? Well, the low clock speed of most X99 Xeons hinder it in single-threaded tasks compared to other platforms like Coffee Lake or Ryzen, making those a better option for the money. It also isn’t a very viable option for a used rig in the traditional sense, like X58 is, due to the higher cost of both the motherboard and CPU, and the increasing price of DDR4. But I still think there is something to be said about the insane multithreaded goodness that can be had for cheap compared to new offerings from Intel or AMD. So that’s all I have for now. I hope everyone can find a use out of this discussion! Also, sorry for the long post. I just kind do that sometimes
  9. I have an i5-2300 quad-core 3.1GHz processor, GTX970 graphics card and I've experienced that the fps is getting pretty low on a few new games, so I thought about upgrading the CPU since a lot of people said that was the solution. I mostly play The Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Origins, Destiny 2 and Civilization VI. On medium settings, and overclocked cpu I reach about 60fps in most areas in the witcher 3, Civ VI and Destiny 2 (not stable), but when I play AC Origins I get around 45fps. The real question is: Which CPU would you guys recomend for my use? I just use my PC for gaming and youtube etc. No 4K nor 144Hz, just plain 1080p and 60Hz. If there are any other tips on how to get more performance I would like to hear it.
  10. CPU decisions

Hey everyone, my first topic but I figured I would get some more input to deciding onmy next upgrade. Currently I have an i7 860 at 4.0Ghz with 16gb of ram and a 1070. gaming performance just isn't where I want it to be and i am looking to do an upgrade. I am torn between a 4770k that is on Craigslist locally for 400 OBO with a bad mobo. Or should I wait and upgrade to a 1600x? With the 4770k I would be able to keep the ram I currently have. Any input is gratly apreciated.

  12. I was just wondering what Hard drives to get for my computer that i will also use as a nas by share the RAID volume via Windows File Sharing. I am looking for speed, reliability and stability. 13. Hi everyone, I own a Vaio VPCF11C5E that has an Intel core I3 330M and I would like to upgrade it to an I5 or an I7. Could anyone plese help me choose the right processor becase I am really lost, Best regards NewGamer Ps. Attached is my CPU-Z result.
  14. Hey guys before i start here is the build I am planning. Processor: i7-8700k Graphics Card: Asus Strix gtx 1080ti OC edition Motherboard: Asus ROG MAXIMUS X FORMULA RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3200Mhz 32GB Storage: Samsung 960 pro evo 500gb m.2 nvme ssd + 4tb barracuda hdd + 500 gb samsung regular ssd PSU: Corsair hx850i Case: Corsair Crystal 570x Now to the topic at hand. I am hoping to overclock my i7-8700k chip to 5.0 Ghz. I am going to be using AIO watercooling with a push pull configuration, my question is mostly about choice. The case would be running 3 intake, 3 exhaust fans. Aesthetics wise my favorite cooler is the NZXT Kraken X52 240mm AIO. But I am not sure if I should be able to attain a 5.0 Ghz overclock. In any and all situations I would replace the provided thermal paste with higher quality market ones such as the arctic silver. My questions are therefore as follows: 1) Do you think a 240mm radiator would be sufficient in push-pull or do i need a 360mm one? 2) If i do indeed need a 360mm radiator, what would be your recommendation? Despite wanting very high performance I do care about the aesthetics of the build and therefore am against using thermaltakes disgusting looking 360mm AIO due the the heatsink cover. 3) Disregarding questions 1 and 2, to attain such an overclock is delidding the processor necessary? 4) any other recommendations or words of advice you can give me concerning the matter?
  15. Hello LTT, I need help. So one year ago I bought myself Razer Blade with i7 Skylake edition, GTX1060 and QHD+ screen. And I have a problem that even Razer cant solve. So instead of writing a bible about it I will post a link of a video I recorded for Razer Support. If anybody can help, please do! Thank you! Link:
  16. So, in another section of the forum I've been discussing with people the build that I'm gonna do in the near future(link: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/852879-3500€-gamingstreaming-pc-theorycrafting-need-advice-long-post/ ), but after all the suggestions received, plus reading other forums posts here, on other forums, reviewing benchmark articles and videos, I've come to the conclusions that: Threadripper is good but still inferior for what I need from a CPU compared to Intel, which is a shame because I liked the "future-proofing" compatibility guaranteed by AMD, and Ryzen just straight up isnt enough; I need either i7 8700k or i9 7900x, and that; Whichever one I choose, both run very hot, and not only top of the line air cooling or very good liquid cooling is reccomended, but even delidding has a very good argument in its favour; but is it worth doing it considering all the risks and that it would be my very first time delidding? Or, is it worth to spend 200€ more to go on siliconlottery and get a chip from them, for what? 10°c less and 100mhz more? But(ts): i7 8700k on many gaming+streaming benchmarks is shown to cap all of its cores(want an example? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5w3psElwew), and I would have also chrome+voip+various softwares open in the meanwhile, so I dont really want to have my CPU to be so stressed to the point where I can't do anything more; The i9 7900x not only costs 1k€, not only their motherboards also generally cost more, but they also need these frigging keys(but tbh, I don't really use Raid atm, but with the money I'm spending, I'm kinda bitter not to have the option in the future unless I spend even more money on the motherboard), and I don't know how much a decent motherboard with Thunderbolt 3(which same with Raid, I don't really need atm and usb3 is just fine) and all the other good standard stuff its gonna cost(which means I will probably have to get the cheapest one hoping that its good enough), but the gaming performance on benchmarks are shown to be just slightly lesser than the 8700ks by like, negligible amounts, while the core count really helps with multitas- emh, MEGAtasking(sorry Intel, please let me go now). So, in light of all this, here are two builds with the two different CPU builds; 8700k: 7900x So, what do you think its best? And do you think the motherboards are a correct match? I didnt pay much attention yet to the motherboards and I know I can improve these picks, especially because of the "The motherboard M.2 slot #2 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports." warnings on pcpartpicker, lol. Any suggestions at all? Thank you for reading this!
  17. Upgrading to an i7 4790

Hi all. Here is my current build - i5 4460 - 12gb 1600mhz DDR3 - 8gb RX 480 - 120gb SSD + 1.25TB HDD I want to upgrade to an i7 4790, because the socket is the same. How much of a performance increase can I expect to see when gaming? The reason is because right now the i5 4460 has basically gotten to the end of it's lifespan. Some games, such as BF1 (one of my most played games) has a minumum requirement of an i5 6600k, something my CPU doesn't even meet. For the minimum. I see a lot of CPU bottlenecking. Anyway, how much performance increase will I see in gaming?

  19. Yesterday i received my GTX 1080 DUKE 8Gb OC in the mail and i took out my old 970 and put in my 1080 and ran DDU and did all the good stuff and downloaded new drivers and getting rid of my old ones, I then proceed to run Destiny 2 getting only 70 frames in main areas and around 160 in underground/isolated places. I was very confused by this because my friend has a GTX 1070 with a 7700K and he was getting 180FPS constant with small dips to 140 and in huge battles 100ish, My 1080 setup would drop to 60ish fps in most fights i then tried Overwatch and same thing, 120 fps stable and he gets around 240FPS constantly, I kept an eye on my Usage and the 1080 was constantly at 100% usage with my CPU being at around 75% i tried so many different things and got frustrated and Factory reset my PC, and no none of my upscalling was up, no VSYNC, no GSYNC nothing like that after the reset my overwatch frames have been up to around 150 constant but nowhere near what a 1080 should be getting idk if i'm being bottlenecked or not considering my 1080 is running at 100% Usage. Any help would be fantastic Also my friend does not have a SSD so he uses hard drive just like I am for destiny 2 but i use SSD for overwatch, |SPECS| Graphics card : 1080 DUKE 8gb OC Processor: Intel I7 6700 (Non K) Ram: DDR4 16GB 2133 SSD: 500GB HD: 2Tb Case: Nzxt H440 Heres just some benchmark http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/5758546
  20. Hey. I have my main computer which I game and watch youtube etc. So I bought another old pc from a school in my town. The pc is from 2012 and cost me 10€. I got keyboard, mouse and 16:9 monitor with the cables also with it. The computer has mATX MSI motherboard (LGA1155), i3 2100, 8gb of ddr3 1333mhz ram, cd/dvd drive, 500gb hdd and 500w psu. Yes, all that for 10€ (11.6 USD) I changed the 500gb hdd for a 120gb hdd from old laptop as Im not going to need that much space on second computer, so Im going to put the 500gb on my main computer. I don't have the 10€ computer at my home because I left it at my grandparents place because I go there a lot so I would have a computer to do stuff with there. I installed Linux Mint, as I want to learn linux more. The computer had some passive cooled geforce card but I did not bother about it and changed it to quadro fx 1800 that I got for free from a friend. After you have read my life story^^ (jk), I would like to ask what is the best sandy bridge cpu upgrade for cheap? I have been looking for i5 and i7. I would like the i7 more just because it's a i7. What do you think I should get? My budget is max 50-70€ and I do not want any like brand new parts as used will be the best option for this computer. I'm not going to edit any videos on this computer and only gonna be doing light gaming like casual minecraft, css, hl etc. older games for the nostalgia. And mostly this computer will be used just to browse internet by me as I am the only user.
  21. Hello, Currently running a 3770 non-k and looking to upgrade. I found a really good deal on a 4770k bundle ( about half the price of an equivalent R5 1600 setup) I also already have a custom watercooling loop so overclocking it will be good! Any ideas? Is its worth it? Thank you in advance
  22. hi all, iam currently cracking my brain to know which i7 is better and to make it even worse i ordered i7 2760qm because i found it first on ebay but after i received it i found out that there is the i7 2860qm on Aliexpress for 5$ more. now iam regretting that i didn't search more before buying the 2760qm from ebay. is it worth it returning the cpu i bought from ebay so i buy the 2860qm from aliexpress? my setup is : MSI ge620dx ram : 16gb 1333MHZ 1tb sshd 1tb hdd custom made copper heatsink for high heat dissipation any opinions will be more than appreciated. thank you all
  23. Best cooler for i7 4770k?

Hey there guys, I am having some issues with my current rig and I originally thought It was OS based but it would appear that for what ever reason my CPU is having a hard time breathing and remaining cool. So time for an upgrade - I watched the LMG video of the Air VS Water cooling and was happy to see that Air still wins the good fight, however I am well aware you always need the right tool for the job so I thought I would ask you guys what would be the ideal replacement for my crappy failing cooler. Thanks for you're time fella's! Look forward to hearing back. i7 4770k 3.5GHZ 16GB DDR4 Kingston " Hyper Beast " GTX1080 EVGA FTW Edition Asus Maximus VI
  24. I am torn between the Threadripper and i7-8700k. I plan on doing gaming, and while the threadripper isn't the best for it, I also plan on running game servers off of the machine, as well as some rendering. I also plan to stream and record gameplay. I know that the threadripper will excel in some areas, but I have heard that on games such as Destiny 2, it suffers from a very low frame rate, even with high-end gpus, I don't know this to be true, but I would like to know how much of a bottleneck the single-core performance of a threadripper is a 1440p or 2160p. I plan on pairing this with 2x 1080ti's, and 32GB of ram. I also plan to overclock each as high as I can on an AIO. TLDR - Which is better overall for a gaming/rendering/server/streaming build?
  25. Hey, I got a question. My pc is in need of a small cpu upgrade because in most modern games (like BF1 64 player map) its at 100% and laggy while the gpu is at 60%. But at the moment i'm on a tight budget. It has an (unoverclockable) Dell MB socket 1155 ; i5 2400 (watercooled corsair H60); 300w psu; 500Gb ssd + 1Tb hdd; 16GB ddr3 ram and a nvidia 1050ti 4Gb. But.... i found an i7 3770 (not K) for 100 bucks so my question is, is it worth it in this day and age to still buy an i7 3770 or should i just wait and throw out the whole crap and start new (but i'd have to wait 3 years or so) any other tips/suggestions are welcome I don't mind playing on the not highest setting if it can't keep up but i do appreciate nice graphics (so i like to stay at 1080p with decent graphics) i might have to mention, the watercooling seems overkill but it isn't really, with stock air i got an average temp of 85°C fan maxed... and i got a great deal on h60 so now it averages 30°C with the fan on minimum and barely any noise. Also to my understanding the 3770 is the best cpu for this Mobo.
