I am currently running an i-5 9600k on a asus prime z390p. I have 1.35v and im running at a stable 5.0 overclock. Whenever I try to push it further it crashes. I am very new to overclocking and Im not really sure what voltages to use. I have an NH-14S cooling it and my case is the rosewill spectra d100 so I have tons of airflow. I am running temps in the 60's currently even while under load so I have a large amount of room to go. If anybody knows the voltages I should try in order to push it to around 5.3. Or should I even push it to over 5? This is my first build so I don't have any spare parts lying around so I cant go and do something that would break any of the parts. Tysm in advance.

discussion Bad performance caused by unexpected bottlenecks
Astro22 posted a topic in Troubleshooting
So I think this can be a very interesting discussion. I'm having some weird performance issues with my computer, which I can only image is some kind of bottleneck. But the bottleneck isn't that obvious. I hope I can find a solution to my problem, and start an interesting discussion at the same time. Last summer, I bought my first self-build gaming PC. I worked a retail job for months to be able to afford it. Specs: CPU: i5-9600K GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 Super WINDFORCE OC 8G RAM: 16GB DDR4 2666Hz Motherboard: AsRock Z390 Phtantom Gaming 4 Power Supply: GIGABYTE B700H C-Drive: Samsung 970 EVO plus, 250GB M.2 SSD I've had multiple issues with this computer from the start. Some I could fix. A week after I started using the computer, I started noticing that the performance that I got didn't match any of the benchmarks online (of the RTX 2070 Super). I was reaching much lower framerates than expected. After months on end of asking on forums and looking for issues, I found out my Nvidia control panel had a setting turned on that would make it so my games were rendered in 2K and then down scaled to my monitor resolution which is 1080p. I never turned on the setting knowingly and nobody ever thought it would be the problem. I only noticed the setting because I was watching a video that explained every setting individually. After turning it off, I did notice some improvements, but not much at all. The framerates were good enough though, to be satisfied with it. While trying to fix this issue, I did find out about another problem with my computer. I store my games on another drive. The drive is a 750GB Toshiba HDD. It's a drive I stole from an older laptop so it's a 2,5 inch drive. While benchmarking every part in my PC, I noticed that it did not only have terrible specs, but was also under performing, below the terrible spec. It was a horrible read speed, like 20MB/s or less I don't remember so clearly. Since my games are installed on that drive, I'm suspecting that it's a bottleneck for my games. A drive is something I normally don't consider when thinking about gaming performance. Anyway, after disabling the upscale setting, I started noticing another issue. Almost all my games have stuttering problems. They can run like well into 100fps, and suddenly freeze for 2 seconds, even though my CPU and GPU were never 100% utilized. Each game has their own kind of issues. GTA 5: World could stop loading, making me drive into unloaded areas, and having lag spikes. (Doesn't happen often) Subnautica: Game freezes when when an entrance animation is played. Like stepping into my base or a Seamoth. The game freezes for a second or two. It even crashed once. (Happens always) Project CARS 2: Throughout the race, the game likes to freeze for two seconds while the simulation is still going. This is very annoying, I could be in first, the screen freezes for two seconds, it unfreezes and I'm off the road being taken over by people behind me. (Happens regularly) Some games don't have issues at all but these are just some examples. This behavior is not normal. I'm playing with a 4K gaming capable graphics card on a 1080p screen, with V-Sync often turned on because my screen is just 60Hz, yet this still happens. My computer is not even stretching it's legs, yet I'm rudely interrupted in my immersion with lagspikes way too often. I'm most suspicious about the slow drive, but I don't have the money to replace it yet. This is what I mean with an unexpected bottleneck. You would never say it's a drive that's causing issues in your game. I'm still not sure about this anyway, so that made we wonder if there are any other bottlenecks I could think about. This also made me very insecure about my selection of components, second guessing every part in there. These issues make the system feel unstable in general. One more issue I noticed with my computer that doesn't have to do with performance I hope, is an i n s a n e amount of coil whine. In Assassins Creed Oddysey, the coil whine is unbearable if I'm not wearing my headphones. Also when I'm playing Minecraft with heavy shaders, it tends to happen a lot. It doesn't even need to be a heavy game to run.. Light games can cause coil whine too. It's way too much coil whine, and way too loud. And it's annoying the hell out of me. I've seen tips like swap out the power supply, but I also don't have the money for that. To wrap this up: Do you have any idea what might cause these problems? Is the slow drive definitely the problem? Is there a bottleneck I don't know of? And it might be interesting to discuss in general, what kinds of unexpected bottlenecks there might be. Also just to clarify, I don't have any thermal issues, and I have a fast and stable internet connection. I have not yet tried to reinstall Windows, but I'm not able to do that for probably two more months because of important software I just can't remove yet.- 10 replies

Hello, browsed through the forum and have not found an answer relating to my dilema. Some similar but there was no solution. Goes to window logo and get stuck(freezes) - 1st boot priority SSD. Automatic repair screen pops up - loads 2 spins and freezes. *Tried fixing - remove all usb and other drives connected. Same outcome. (Mobo + Ram + PSU + CPU + Cooler + SSD) Problem 2 : Pc boots with everything in except SSd. Goes to window logo and get stuck(freezes) - 1st boot priority HDD (Also with OS installed) Automatic repair screen pops up - loads 2 spins and freezes. *Tried fixing - remove all usb and other drives connected. Same outcome.(Mobo + Ram + PSU + CPU + Cooler + HDD) Problem 3 : Removed everything from PC except MOBO + PSU + CPU + COOLER + RAM and used a usb stick plugged in the back usb slot to fresh install windows 10 downloaded via windows creation tool from their website and saved to usb stick. Changed Bios setting to EUFI and booted. Pc goes to manufacturer logo screen trying to boot USB. Freezes after 2 spins. I tried all the Ram solutions as well, remove 1 by 1 and see if it was the cause. No progress. Same stuck screen even with 1 or both or ram in place. Cant boot without ram =X. I dont have a different ram. need to buy but i hope i dont have to. wasted alot of money already. I don't understand. I can boot the Pc. Everything Runs, spins, lights. I can enter BIOS. I see everything connected. Fans, Ram, Cpu, everything. But when i try to Boot the OS either from SDD,HDD or do a fresh install of windows from USB. It always freezes at window logo or manufacturer splash screen. Not sure if Mobo needs update? i tried internet flash update. No updates pop up. I even tried secure boot on the usb stick. disable csm. I manage to get to the windows install page ONCE! but it froze and when i tried to boot again it never got past the splash screen. 3 days of troubleshooting. Cant really figure out. Any one with the knowledge to guide me????? Please just to get past the splash screen. To see my windows log in page... Would be very very much appreciated.

Hey guys, I have a question. My specs are: i5-9600k Gigabyte b360 hd3 (MB) 2x Kingston HyperX 4GB CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo (CPU cooler) Some HDD 1TB and 500GB SSD 256GB CoolerMaster MasterWatt 500 lite fully modular (PSU) Will my PSU be enough for my next possible upgrade which is a Gigabyte RTX 2070 Gaming OC 8G? Like I know I'll need a new PSU, but could I temporary use my pc with only 500W and that GPU? The issue might be that this GPU comes pre-overclocked so it uses a great amount of power...

Hi! Im wondering if you guys think I should buy a RTX2060 or upgrade my cpu (have to buy new mobo and ram also)? Im looking for better performance in games, but can only afford one of the upgrades at the moment. My cpu and gpu: i5-3470 3.2ghz (used 6 years) 8gb DDR3 1300mhz GTX 970 (used 2.5 years) I know a RTX 2060 will be bottlenecked by the i5-3470, but it still gives better performance then with my gtx 970 and a i5-8400 or i5-9600k with 16gb ddr4 2666mhz, doesnt it? An upgrade with i5-8400, B-mobo and ram would cost the same as a RTX 2060 (500$). An upgrade with i5-9600k, Z-mobo, ram and cpu-cooler would cost 260$ more. Will most likely cpu or gpu prices drop in the future? What do you guys think would be my best option?

I am working on planning my crystalline PC build and I am trying to make it as fast as I can (relatively speaking). In LTT's video of "The fastest gaming PC money can buy" I noticed they used both an Optane module and an NVme SSD. I am attempting a smaller scale setup of this, however, I read that too many drives could hurt system performance due to oversaturating the PCIe lanes. My setup for this build includes an NVme SSD, an Optane memory module, 1 HDD and 1 Graphics card. I am planning this on a Z390 motherboard, which if I recall puts the PCIe lane count at 40. However, I don't know if I can include both an Optane + HDD and an NVme SSD without over-saturating the PCIe lanes. So, despite my searching, I still couldn't find a straightforward answer. P.S. I apologize if this lacks certain tags or proper format, I rarely use forums.

I made a few post a while back about which motherboard to get and I'm wondering If these ones would fit well with this setup: CPU:I5-9600k GPU:Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 8GB Ram:8x2(16GB) DDR4 PSU:650+GOLD 1TB HD MOBO:(Undecided) Motherboards: I'm looking to spend around 130 the Aorous Elite is one I was looking at but is averaging around 170-180. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GPdxFT/gigabyte-z390-aorus-elite-atx-lga1151-motherboard-z390-aorus-elite The z390 gaming x fits the price range, but I'm unsure if it's a good mobo https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CdPKHx/gigabyte-z390-gaming-x-atx-lga1151-motherboard-z390-gaming-x The z390 gaming sli also fits the price range but I'm also unsure if it's a good mobo https://pcpartpicker.com/product/wgyV3C/gigabyte-z390-gaming-sli-atx-lga1151-motherboard-z390-gaming-sli https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157852&ignorebbr=1 If there are any other ones you would recommend for around that price range please list it below.

So I just won an auction on a good GTX 1070 on ebay so I guess its time to build a computer. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Stiggy_5/saved/vQkMZL My budget is around $800, and I already own the storage, case, and now PSU/GPU. I'm located in Tennessee so sadly no local electronics places. I use a really sub-par monitor right now but I'll be gaming on a 4K TV, mostly racing games and emulators. I will be upgrading my monitor after the build is done and proven. Any recommendations?

Hi, I recently build my first computer and decided to overclock it. Here are the more important parts: i5-9600k MSI MAG Z390 Tomahawk MSI Radeon RX570 When I boosted my cpu frequency up to 5GHz with 1.43V, it actually got a worse score in cinebench (800cb down from 1100cb). I have read that it should be stable with those values, so does anyone know what's wrong?

This is the pc I've whipped up on Pc part picker, be mindful all currency must be in CAD dollars since I live in Canada, here is the pc part picker list- https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/zk8Fhy I was thinking in either getting a Corsair H60 or a Noctua Dh15, I wanted a cpu cooler that would last a while and was reliable and would be able to oc my cpu 4.8 ghz steady or even 5ghz if I can, I didnt know what to pick so I just left it as an h60, help me decide what cooler i should get and if there's any parts I should change. MY USES FOR PC AND BUDGET I use Vegas pro 15 mainly and use After Effects for special effects and stuff. It can at least do some light gaming, and 4k video editing when i need to my budget is 1600 and the pc I have is close to it, taxes will surpass the budget but there may be changes. My main settings for video is 1080p 60fps.

Hey All, So I am trying to troubleshoot my new build (specs below...) and I was wondering, does anyone know how to Flash Bios on a MSI z370m Mortar (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z370M-MORTAR/Overview)? I have installed everything on the board on my trusty cardboard test bench, but when I attempt to power the bugger on I get nothing. No post, no beeper codes. Just pretty lights and a blank screen. I have reseated the CPU, reinstalled the cooler, tested the PSU, moved the ram around (only using a single stick). All the normal things I could think of. Is there anything else I can try that y'all can think of? I downloaded the latest bios with compatibility to 9th gen CPUs on a thumb drive, but idk how to update bios if I cant reach it on this board. I would prefer not to have to get an 8th gen CPU just to update bios, but it is what it is I guess haha. Really want to get this going cause my current rig is a 1st gen AMD quad core... You can probably tell why I am excited for a new build. Haha! Thanks ahead of time! Specs: CPU: Intel Core i5-9600k Mobo: MSI z370m Mortar RAM: Ballistix Tactical Tracer 16GB DDR4 3000 (1 stick... maybe more in future ;D ) PSU: Thermaltake Smart RGB 700w 80+ GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 1080ti SC2 Cooler: Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240R

Hello, after a few weeks of research I have created a computer part list I am happy with, but I would like the experts here to look it over for any errors or suggestions for improvement. I plan to purchase these parts within the next two weeks. Budget - $1500 USD Location - USA, I plan to purchase parts from a combination of Newegg and Amazon Goal - Play a wide range of games (From indie to AAA titles) at Ultra settings on a single 1440p 60Hz monitor. I typically play strategy, building, RPG, 4x games rather than competative FPS type games. For this reason, I don't feel that I need a 144Hz monitor. Theme - Trying to go for a Black/Red theme with the build. Reused Parts - I already own the 1TB SSD listed on the build as $0. Additionally I will be reusing a mouse and will get Windows 10 from school. Other Notes - I know that the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors are very popular recently, but I would like to stick with the Intel i5-9600k if possible. I plan to do some overclocking with the processor. Additionally I believe that this setup will initially be overkill to only run 1440p at 60Hz. I would like this computer to be able to hold up for a long time (4-6 years ideally). My current computer build has held up for 6 years (i5-3570k + GTX 660). Can you please check the build below and: 1) Check for any errors with compatibility 2) Check for any problematic bottlenecks 3) Let me know if the cpu cooler and mobo are suitable for moderate CPU overclocking (I have no experience with overclocking, but would like to try it with this build) 4) See if the 1440p 60Hz monitor I selected looks good, and if not, suggest a better alternative Thank you, and feel free to ask for any more info that can help! Hey guys, I'm planning to upgrade my GPU (currently running 1060 6GB) to RTX 3070. But I'm little bit worried, that my CPU won't keep up with new RTX cards. My 9600k is running at 5.0Ghz allcore and I have two monitors - 1. 4k 60hz(now for movies, work etc.) and 2. 1080p 240hz for games. Will I get any bottleneck especialy at 1080p (since it should be similar as RTX 2080ti)? Should I rather wait and buy cheaper RTX 3060?

I recently put together a rig with an i5-9600k (clocked at 4.8ghz), 2080 super, 32gb 3600mhz ram. When running games like Modern Warfare and Ace combat 7 I have run into extremely high CPU usage (80-90%). I am running both at 1080p 144hz. I've done a fair amount of digging online and other than the "six cores isn't enough" responses I can't seem to find legitimate reasons or ways to fix this. I found one suggestion that was to get a new monitor to run games at 1440p which doesn't make sense to me. Is there anything I can do to lower CPU load (all background processes are using minimal CPU, sub 1% in most cases)?

Hi, before you thing that this isn't the right category please read. So basically about a year ago I bought I5-9600K and Asus Z390-H and I didn't notice that the corner of the CPU is bent and I cannot RMA it as the store will put the blame on me (I bought the CPU as Tray and got it in transparent Intel CPU sort of shell). So my problem is that for a year the PC worked fine without any issues but for the last week or so, the PC won't boot and sometimes even turn on when external GPU is installed. I tried my own GPU in different slots and also borrowed GT630 from a friend and got the same result. I must say that when the PC does turn on with GPU he has VGA Q-Led and Boot Q-Led at the same time and it stays like that until I restart the PC and then I get the same result. Please help.

I am going to build a new PC ,have to decide between getting an i5-8600k now or getting an i5-9600k when it's released. Since the i5-9600k just has a 200MHz higher turbo clock(according to multiple leaks) than the i5-8600k, which can be easily made up by overclocking. Therefore , is it worth the wait? Help please
