Hi All, First post here, after all the 3000 series hype i've been considering upgrading my GPU & CPU, currently using the Asus Gold Edition 980ti with a i5-4690K. Was looking to upgrade to the 3070 (when i can get hold of one) and a new Ryzen 3. Never sold parts before and have no idea on the value on a limited edition card like this, it appears to outspec the 'reference 980ti' on the ASUS site but have no idea how well that translates onto the second hand market or if it's even noteworthy this many years down the line. Any thoughts or feedback on the upgrade or how valuing my existing card would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am going to start off by saying that its more of a sentimental choice than straight out being too broke for an upgrade. Over the years I swapped out everything, except the old ASUS motherboard and the intel cpu. By my calculations next summer my lil pc potato will be ten years old. Four years ago my power source unit gave out, thankfully without damaging anything or setting my room on fire. two and a half years ago my old HDD died so i swapped it for 2 SSD's, 18 months ago i swapped out my old AMD Radeon 290 with the RX 580 8gb and half a year ago i swapped the old ram sticks into 16gb. The last part to get changed was the pc case because i wanted to be somewhat fashionable and have some RGB's. While rewiring my motherboard to the new case I made some mistakes and after pressing the power on button i saw little white smoke rising and the smell of burning plastic. some of the new case RGB wires burned for the rear fan. turns out the motherboard is so old H81M-D that it doesnt have enough (power sockets?) i rewired it correctly (without rgb) and it works like a charm. I didn't set out to take my pc on a Ship of Theseus type of journey, it all started with small failures and fixes and then trading in my gpu and getting a new one for only 120eu instead of 320+ or so because it was on sale with a huge discount at that time before the price rises. By my estimate over these 9 years, the original and new part prices add up to around 1100-1200 euros for having a "decent" computer. I still use my old 1080p sony tv, so if i wanted to upgrade i would need to buy a new tv or monitor + the actual new pc. And now onto the sentimental side. This was a gift (in cash) from my grandmother and the rest of my family and i still want to imagine that it is the same gift from all those years ago. I wont upload photos because its more of a story to be proud of than a thing to show off. Good day to all of you and I wonder if anyone also has Theseus type toaster stories they can share about.

Hi everybody, I've decided to experiment a little bit with overclocking since my system is starting to get old. I've managed to take the cpu up to 4.5 Ghz with Cpu core voltage manual ovveride 1.27v and Cpu cache voltage manual ovveride 1.17. I also overclocked the ram not with the xmp profile but manually entering the latency values 10-11-10-30, speed 1866MHz voltage 1.50 as tested on the manufacturer's site (Corsair vengance LP two banks of 4gb). While doing the stability test with my previous setting (voltage 1.269 and 1.169) everything went well for about two hours. Today, however, it crushed (blue screen sad face error WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR ) out of the blue (just normal office activities nothing stressful for the cpu) So I turned up the voltage to 1.27 and 1.7 and everything went smoothly. Tonight I did the aida64 test again and the pc restarted by itself without any error screen. It's been a couple of days and no errors occured with 4.5 ghz, 1.27 cpu core voltage and 1.17 cpu cache voltage Am I doing something wrong? Should I turn up the voltage again? I attach the screens while I was doing the test, and the aida64 log. I frankly don't understand anything about all those voltage values, I don't know if they are correct. Motherboard asus z97i plus Noctua nh-d15 Temperatures are not a problem, the fans were running at low revs and anyway the temperature did not exceed 60 degrees. Any advice is welcome Report_2020-04-29_21-48-08_stat.htm.pdf

Greetings. Completely new here, to this site and to help forums all together. (Hope this question is posted in the correct category.) Just recently download SpeedFan to give it a try. I looked up a tutorial to make sure I got everything working correctly. I launched up a game to check in game temps. CPU in near 100c at around 50% cpu usage. My CPU fan is maxed out and can't keep up. (see FAN1 @ 1900RPM) I restarted and check bios for temps. Same story. I attached some pictures. Mobo: GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 CPU: I5-4690k (have not touched any oc settings) Questions: What temperatures are too hot? What's the minimum and the maximum?. I've built and been using this computer for almost three years with no problems. Do you think my stock cooler or thermal paste was installed incorrectly? Hard to believe my cpu has been running that hot with no issues for three years. How did this become a problem? What is temp3? It usually is running hot with my CPU. SpeedFan says it's on chipset "IT8620E". Not sure if that is related to my cpu. Is that a part on the mobo? If so, how do I fix that? If it's not part of the cpu, an after market cooler won't help? I heard SpeedFan gives wacky temperatures readings, could this be whats happening? How do I be sure? I bought a 212 EVO for my CPU just to be sure. Hope It can fix my problem. It hasn't come yet. Will update when it gets here. (Check links for screenshots. I tired to attach them twice. Kept getting errors -200 "Problem processing upload file" Your going to have to open the images in newtab an manually zoom in to see them correctly. Sorry) - http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/Slouch00/media/Screenshot 167_zpsctbpvc9d.png.html - http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii558/Slouch00/Screenshot 166_zpsdictzbja.png - http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii558/Slouch00/Screenshot 160_zpslnylkobu.png -Slouch

Thanks in advance! I build my computer 2 and 1/2 years ago, it has an i5-4690k, GTX 970 G1 Gaming, 16 ddr3 RAM, a ssd, hdd, some expensive motherboard, blah blah blah. I originally started with 1-1080p monitor, but about 1 year ago, I upgraded and added a second 1440p monitor. For the past few months, I have noticed my frame rates dropping slowly, due to game updates or whatever else. I have always been careful with my computer, cleaning it out, and making sure the temperatures were well below the max. But recently in a couple of games I have noticed that I have been getting very bad frame rates. Such as low 20's on medium settings. Both my CPU and GPU usages have been around 50% in these cases, no thermal throttling, nothing. (By the way I have an aftermarket cooler on my CPU, not the crap one that Intel ships with) Lately I have been debating whether I need to upgrade my CPU or GPU, but have always convinced myself not to due to the fact of the usages being really low. (Hard drive, Ram, and all other usages have also been low) One thing that was interesting, but weird, was that My GPU clock speeds were over the rated OC speeds on the store page, but the usages have been at 50-60% (Ex. Rated for 1660Megahertz, running at 1700+ (No OC) Usage still at 50-60% but clock speeds maxed???????????) This is really confusing to me! Please help!

Ok so i recently upgraded my gaming rig from a GTX 970 to a GTX 1080 xtreme edition by gigabyte. I'm kind of new here so what i'm asking is: do i NEED to upgrade my CPU or is it still useful for its age as a haswell processor? my current rig setup: case: Corsair 230T case (orange) CPU: i5-4690k quadcore 3.5ghz 4x4GBs corsair Vengeance DDR3 2400mhz ram Gigabyte z97x-gaming 5 motherboard GPU: Gigabyte xtreme gaming edition GTX 1080 Corsair RM650x power supply 2x 250GB samsung 850 evo SSDs plus a CD drive i don't know the make of as i salvaged it from an old PC I also have 2 top ML140 PRO LED Red 140mm PWM Premium Magnetic Levitation Fans from corsair as well and removed the stock back extraction fan as i have no pins left on my MB on average on most games i play i average from around 70 FPS to a good 144 FPS dependant on the games i play that are graphically intense include: Warframe War thunder Star trek: online GTA V Star wars: Battlefront II Star wars: Battlefront (EA/Dice) Rise of the Tomb raider most of which have their graphics maxed out. Side question: i would also like advice on if its a good idea to put 2 GTX 1080's on this rig in SLI with a 4k monitor as i use a 1080p monitor currently and what PSU i would need to go with it as i feel 650w wouldn't suffice any help would be appreciated many thanks: TheONLYHamster (harry)

Hello, For about a month now I have been getting a BOSD error in what seems to be times where my CPU is at max load. My Build: i5-4690K @ 4.5GHz Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 16GB DDR3-1866 MSI Z97S SLI PLUS (Discontinued) NZXT Kraken X31 69.5 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler EVGA GTX 1070 FTW Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Power Supply All drivers are up to date, I have Windows 10, and this has been really bothering me. If it has anything to do with my issue, here is some extra information: I have Start for Windows 10 I have Wallpaper Engine I have a custom theme installed on my computer Anyway, if there is any help you can provide me with, thank you.

Pretty simple question. Someone said that I should try Gigabyte's Easytune as it has a auto overclock option. I really dont know much about overclocking and was going to give it a try but this seems like it might be a good option.

Hello everyone, I tried over clocking my cpu with a hyper evo 212 and I would try various clock speeds and the temperature would spike dramatically during my prime95 Blend testing. I went out and bought the Corsair H100i-V2 today after seeing it had rave reviews and my temps starting out the test would be fine and more steady for sure. However, no matter what clock speeds 4.5Ghz to 4.3Ghz, after 8 minutes it would go about 85 degrees Celsius. Is that normal? Or am I doing something wrong? My computer would automatically OC to 3.9Ghz naturally through turbo boost or something I'm new to liquid cooling but I'm sure everything is plugged in correctly and I feel cold air being pushed through my radiator Any advice or tips for OC would be helpful. (Since I'm new to this, I'm using the preset OC from the bios to ensure stability) Specs: CPU: Intel i5-4690k GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 SC Cooling: Corsair H100i-V2 MoBo: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK

I heard that the i5-4690k would bottleneck the gtx 1070. I plan on buying the gtx 1070 over black friday/cyber monday. To my main point, I have never overclocked anything in my life and it seems like i will have to overclock my cpu if I hope to get the full perfomrance of a gtx 1070. My current cooler is a H100i and the motherboard is gigabyte with the most recent bios (not the beta though, F9). https://pcpartpicker.com/b/HFPscf Would anyone be able to walk me through it, I have watched some youtube videos but am still not really sure on what to do. I can skype, discord, or steam voice chat if that makes it easier. Skype: swift.fishy Discord: Swiffi #6765 Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198011365130/

i5-4690k I5-4690k overclocked with gtx750ti, cpu bottleneck?
dilanoist posted a topic in Graphics Cards
Hello, My name is Dilano, I have a question I have found no answer for on the internet. My cpu is a I5-4690k overclocked to 4.4Ghz and it's stable, it also got approved by Paul's Hardware (a youtuber, I tweeted about my oc and he replied that it was solid. there are screenshots of my oc). My gpu is a gtx 750ti, I'm planning to upgrade in about a year, this gpu is slightly overclocked (there is also a screenshot of this). But my problem is that when I play Bf1 my cpu is at 100% but my gpu not, while it would be diffrent. I have read that my cpu is good for gaming and it would not be a bottleneck even if I used a gtx1080. I benchmarked while I played and I got some wierd looking values that show diffrent, it says that my cpu is bottlenecking my gpu. Any one that can help me out, I don't think my cpu is the bottlenecking my gpu?- 44 replies

A couple days ago i pulled the trigger on an Acer XG270HU (27" 1440p 144hz TN) upgrading from an old Samsung SyncMaster 2333HD (23?" 1080p 60hz). I'm currently using both monitors, unfortunately i think my build is somewhat under-powered to use the monitor i bought. With the new monitor Rainbow six looks great and i don't see any problems, but pubg only looks good provided i limit myself to crawling (sneakySnake), if i move around too quickly i get screen tearing. OS: Windows 10 CPU: Intel i5-4690k @ 3.50GHz Cooler: Corsair H100i Mother Board: Asus Z97-AR Ram: Evga 16G 2400 DDR3 Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Power: Corsair RM750 When i built my computer, about two years ago, a friend recommended i get certain parts to be overclock friendly. When he explained overclocking to me it sounded like a good idea so i got the parts he recommended. When i built my PC i never went through the flaming hoops (overclocking the cpu and gpu). Now it seems like i have to get every little bit out of my machine. Im hoping someone can recommend me some software to use for monitoring CPU / GPU temperature and usage levels. I am also not sure i understand how stress testing works; both the program(s) to use and if i am able to use that same program for the CPU and the GPU or if ill need to load two different programs. And lastly i was carious about the pro's and cons of going directly into Bios to overclock or using another program to do it. I know the list is long but i am largely ignorant of the finer details of computers and would prefer not to brick my machine, id like it to last at least another year. Thank you for any and all help. P.S My apologies to the mod's if this post isn't in the right place.

Hi, I've recently encountered an issue with my setup: Working Setup: I5-4670k Asus Maximus VI Hero 2x4Go Gskill Ripjaw 2x4Go Corsair Vengeance nVidia GTX 980Ti I've recently changed for an I5-4690K, but when i did my MB didn't POST, with Q-code 00 and a CPU fan speed relatively low... I've first thinked that my CPU was brocken, so I tried it on 3 other MB, always with succes. I then though that was my MB fault, so I tried it with 2 CPU, my i5-4670kand a G3220... still working! I already had checked the compatibility of both, and made the bios update requiered. I've cleared the CMOS many times too. I'm now asking for one simple question... My CPU is good My MB is good Both are compatible So why, why can't they POST??? Waiting here for a savior to help me (and already sorry for my far from perfect english ) Steven

Hey I have just noticed that my i5-4690k looses its turbro from 3900 to just stock 3500 after PC goes to sleep. Does anybody have the same issue or knows how to fix it ? I have Win10 pro, i5-4690k, MSI Z97, 12 gigs of RAM and 2080ti Thanks for any info

I have been having an issue with my entire system freezing frequently for 1-2 seconds while playing Destiny 2 (on an SSD). I don't know if this problem exists with other games for I have not really tried that out yet. I have tried updating the drivers for literally everything. I have tried to roll back drivers for CPU and GPU and networking cards. I have disabled/reinstalled the same drivers. I have tried the same in safe boot. I am at a loss as to what to do. I have tried setting the games priority to high. It seems like the entire computer freezes when it happens, as my processor goes from 95-100% to about 40% utilization when it happens. I have a clip that shows it happening that I am going to try to upload to youtube, but it's going to take a while since my upload speed is hot garbage. Hi, so I have recently very hastily preordered the new RTX 2080ti (dumb, I know) to replace my ancient GTX 970. Now It has come to my attention that with such a modern graphics card I might need to buy new processor to avoid bottlenecking, but that would probably require new motherboard and while were at it a new PS. Would it be too crazy to run my i5-4690k with RTX 2080ti resulting in puny performance due to bottlenecking or is it at least a bit reasonable to keep it like this? I am interested in 4k gaming (WoW, DotA, DOOM, Skyrim, Witcher, at 60fps max. Thanks a lot.

So I upgraded to a GTX 1070 a little while ago and although it has been working quite well for me, I suspect my i5-4690k could be causing some bottlenecking. If that is the case, what CPU would you recommend for upgrading? Besides gaming, I'm also a graphic designer so would be using a number of programs from Adobes CC suite (from complex illustrations in Illustrator to some light video editing). Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

First I'd like to start off by saying I'm very ignorant on bottlenecking and when it happens. I've been really wanting to upgrade to 1440p but I'm afraid that if I get a GTX 1080 I won't get an enjoyable gaming experience thanks to my CPU. I will attach the monitor and GPU I plan on getting which could maybe be useful. Hey i was wondering if anyone knows if my cpu is running good, my i5-4690k is running around 4.2 ghz idle and boosting up to 4.7 when gaming, my temps are 36 c idle and 65 c max. im using a evo 212 with artic mx-4 thermal spunk, iv run adia and prime95 both say the same thing. this is my first pc build iv done and i would be happy with any feed back i can get. i just dont want to fry my cpu

One of those questions that falls into several categories. Does it belong in CPU forum? I've put it here because the system is exclusively for gaming! So I recently got a 1080ti because I'm crazy like that. My build looks a little mismatched now though. i5-4670k at 4.3ghz. I play at 4k60hz and I do tend to play AAA titles. Will upgrading to a shiny new Coffee lake give me much higher FPS for what i'd spending? (CPU+MB+Ram+RGB) I Figure Ryzen is out of the question because in any game that uses 4 cores or less I'd be getting a lower frame-rate.(lower IPC) so its Intel only for me. But on the high end is there evidence of FPS gain coming from this to something like an 8700k? Is that FPS gain worth the cost of entry? (<£600) My current build and what I'd buy if I upgraded today. (Thats a 7700k not an 8700k because the 8700k is £150 more at the moment)

I have a CXM750 PSU in my rig for the past 2 years with no problems. Yesterday I installed the MSI GTX 970 GPU (stock settings). It tends to run most games very well. However in The Witcher 3 I experience crashes. Event viewer stated that the source of the critical error was Kernal-power. I could not find more meaningful information, so I disabled automatic restart on system failure. The game ran flawlessly for approx 1 hour, and then it crashes again. This time I received an error message. "Power supply surges detected during the previous power on. ASUS Anti-Surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power". What should I do to run The Witcher 3 without getting crashes?

I recently bought GTX1070 to replace my 970. But I don't see much improvement on FPS especially on the CPU heavy game like Dota 2. My friend said i5-4690K @4.3 is not quite enough for 144Hz monitor and I need to buy 6 Core i7 and shit. Well, if I really have to upgrade, then mayb i7-4790K, becoz I don't wanna change mobo. but tbh, does i5-4690k too slow to handle 144Hz gaming?

Hey i'm thinking about upgrading my pc. It's between the i5-4690k and the i5-6600k (Right now i have an Fx-6300). I am also upgrading my gpu and will probably buy the gtx 1060. I will mostly do gaming but i'm worried that i'm gonna have to buy a new motherboard and cpu in like 2 years if i pick the 4690k. Also i have never done any overclocking and probably won't for at least a few months because i can't afford a good cooler. What do you guys think is the 6600k worth it?

First Overclock: How did I do? i5-4690K
Cyberwolf33 posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So, I recently build my first real rig and have been getting some stuff ready while I wait to get an aftermarket GTX 1070. Spent most of my day trying to get the best stable OC out of my i5-4690K, using the generic Coolermaster 212EVO. I've been using MSI CPU-Z to make sure everything reads correctly, but otherwise doing all of my work through MSI-Intel XTU software. These are the two profiles I created, and some concerns I've been having (mostly with Vcore) "OC Max" Summary Cores: 47/46/46/46x Cache: 44x Reference Clock: 100.34MHz Vcore: 1.300V VCache:1.300V Max Freq: 4.61GHz @ 71C XTU Benchmark: 860 Marks Notes: This is the one from the first XTU screenshot. Primarily, I increased my Core multipliers to 47/46/46/46 and my cache ratio to 44. I'm leaving this one to do a XTU stress overnight, to make sure it's stable, but it passed a 30 minute XTU stress test with no apparent issues. My main concern here is that a number of sources have discussed 'Electromigration' and from what I read, going past Vcore 1.3 on my 22nm chip is likely to take down the lifespan of my hardware remarkably (Source below). That being said, all of the readings I got were showing the CPU could do better if it wasn't being power throttled. If you check the graph, there was near constant power throttling during the benchmarks and stress tests. And I really don't know anything on this aside from what I learned today, so any help there would be good. In terms of thermal throttling, I know 71C seems a bit high, but I don't intend to use this build at all times, given the possible issues with Vcore>1.300V. If it turns out it is definitely safe to push this thing past 1.3V or increase the worth of that 1.3, I would be willing to save up for a high end All-in-one liquid cooling setup, or personally learn how to do a full loop (I mean I've learned a lot in the past week and this thing isn't on fire, so give me that much) "OC Median" Summary Cores: 42/42/42/42x Cache: 41x Reference Clock: 100.29MHz Vcore: 1.150V VCache:1.150V Max Freq: 4.21GHz @ 67C XTU Benchmark: 846 Marks Notes: This was my initial OC, noticeably more conservative for safety. If you check the graphs, power and thermal throttling aren't much of an issue here, I was mostly trying to make a profile noticeably better than my shipping frequency but not pushing my limits on thermal or voltage. I'm not entirely sure how often I will use this, if OC Max is suitably stable under all situations. It would be an adequate 24/7 profile, but having upgraded from a lower end i3, the speed difference is completely unnoticeable to me. It may still benefit some gaming frames, but again, if OC Max is safe and suitable, I see no reason not to put it on during games as opposed to a more median line. Thoughts? For the most part, I'm wondering about that Vcore and hoping the overnight stress test turns out well on OC Max. If my worries are silly, I'll gladly see about pushing it harder or saving up for a better thermal solution. Otherwise, I think this is as far as the 'silicon lottery' I keep hearing about is taking me. End Note: I've been told about Prime 95 as a stress test software, but I'm going to use XTU overnight today because I've also seen some discussion on Prime 95 generating more heat than similar programs specifically on Haswell. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2739638/4690k-overclock-max-safe-voltage-temperature.html-

Hey guys, I am planing to build a new Pc and need mostly all parts new ssd, hard drives I think. For my gpu I will decide either on a gtx 970 or a r9 390(x) X if there is a good price. Now my current cpu is the i7 2600. I have 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MH should I get something new here? And my power supply is a jersey cp4-520-v2.0. Could I keep this one? Now for the main point. I was planing to get either a i5-4690k or a i5-6600k. Therefore I would need a z97 or z107 mainboard right? Used Cpus are no option where I live. I only found people that sell complete computers and a overclockable cpu is safer to buy new I think. Of course nobody thats sells cpus ever overclocked them... Now both Cpus are priced the same if im correct. 4690k at about 230€ and so is the 6600k. So I tend to go with the newer cpu but then there is the mb and memory. With mainboards there is more of a price range between z97 and z107. And memory? No clue tbh. I want to use ddr3 since ddr4 is not doing much. I dont need many features for the mb. I just want to oc my cpu and gpu. If possible I want the mb to be under oder slightly above 100€. I want to buy a gpu first and 1 month later or so the cpu +mb + memory. A better cooler would also be necessary right? I thought the 970 would be better but maybe the raw power of the r9 390 would beneffit me more if my cpu is beefy enough. I hope you guys can help me decide. Deciding on new parts is always hard for me
