  1. Hello everyone, I'm currently in the process of setting up a home lab VM server tailored for gaming purposes. My plan involves pooling together some of the primary PC components with a close friend to build this lab. Essentially, we aim to configure two instances and allocate both my friend's GPU and mine to these instances. By doing so, we intend to access the VMs remotely via Parsec, enabling us to game from any location with a stable internet connection (meeting Parsec's minimal requirements, naturally). Now, onto my questions: If budget constraints were non-existent, which hypervisor would you recommend for optimal gaming performance in this scenario? and what would win second place if money was an issue? Considering that my server will be operational round-the-clock, would it be more prudent to utilize my current high end consumer-level CPU or invest in one of those enterprise-grade CPUs designed to handle heavy workloads and prolonged usage? Looking forward to your insights and recommendations. Thanks in advance!
  2. So I've been getting the classic Hypervisor BSOD and tried everything I can to circumvent it from happening. This includes running DDU, activating the [Hypervisor] service and reinstalling the service, updating BIOS to latest also chipset. Virtualization is on. Crashed both without oc and oc PC. I haven't turned off tpm in BIOS and some people are telling me to do so but I'd rather have that encryption on. Anyone have any clue what's causing this or a way to troubleshoot it? I'd post dmp files from Windbg but they're inconclusive and don't say what is causing the issue just that the system is crashing (lol). Event viewer isn't logging anything on this either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
  3. Hey there, My Server is using Proxmox as Hypervisor (KVM backend) to spawn VMs. I wanna use the HAB (specs) to passthrough my 4HDDs to a TrueNAS Core VM. In order to do that, I first enabled the IOMMU support in the BIOS/UEFI. After that, I booted into Proxmox and checked whether IOMMU is detected. It spitted out the following output [ 1.332679] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: IOMMU performance counters supported [ 1.344441] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Found IOMMU cap 0x40 [ 1.345378] perf/amd_iommu: Detected AMD IOMMU #0 (2 banks, 4 counters/bank). which in my mind means that IOMMU is already enabled, even if I never configured it in the GRUB cmdline. I also checked the IOMMU groups, to validate the HBA is in its own separate group. [...] IOMMU Group 25 2d:00.0 Serial Attached SCSI controller [0107]: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 [1000:0087] (rev 05) [...] And in fact, it is in its own dedicated IOMMU group. Did someone encounter this before, or is my understanding of IOMMU at some point wrong ? Server Specs: - AsRockRack X570D4U Mainboard - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - x2 16GB Crucial Micron ECC RAM - x2 Seagate Ironwolf 4TB - x2 WD RED 4TB - LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS2308 HBA
  4. Hi everyone, I bought my component a bit more than a year ago and it's been quite a while since i have an issue. As mentioned in the tittle, I get random BSOD on windows with error code HYPERVISOR_ERROR. It happens randomly sometimes on idle, sometimes when watching videos or playing games. I have tried many things in an attempts to fix it, from Microsoft support, to reinstalling Windows, to driver update tools but nothing yet … I cannot figure out the reason for this issue and it is becoming extremely annoying. I have Hyper-V enabled because I use WSL as a dev platform and need to keep it that way. I'll join to this post a copy of my system info. 5. Over this holiday season my primary hypervisor server is going to be going through some changes that I've been planning for a while. It's going to be an upgrade & downgrade at the same time. Details about the CPUs & Coolers Details about the Motherboard Details about the RAM Details about the NVMe Storage More to come later! The most exciting thing being I don't actually know if everything is compatible with one another. I guess we'll just have to wait and find out!
  6. We have HP superdome servers(SD32b model), which runs on IA64 processor. Present OS is HP-UX 11.3, We want to install latest centos 7 on an vPar. Is it possible to install it on XEN hypervisor ?
  7. What is the best Free Os to run VMs on an old Pc (it doesn't need to have tons of features, it just needs to run 2 linux vms one for a minecraft server and one for a website) I tried to install Vmware Esxi, but it doesn't detect my network card, I also tried to install Oracle VM server, but I got an error message halfway through the installation and couldnt find any documentation about it. Thanks in advance
  8. I have a server which I would like to use to serve as both a NAS and hypervisor. But I have not yet been able to find a suitable configuration and/or software. Maybe anyone here can help. My goals: - Manage VM's via a GUI, where the ability to easily clone VM's is a must. Support for VM templates and snapshots would be a big plus. - Create network shares via a GUI on a mirrored array. Reliable storage is a must. Support for snapshots would be a big plus. Options I have tried so far: - Unraid: Easy to use, but limited VM support. No GUI support for cloning. - FreeNAS: ZFS support and out-of-the-box support for ZFS snapshots. VM support seems really minimal. - Proxmox: Excellent VM support, but no support for creating network shares. FreeNAS as a VM would theoretically be an option, but I do not feel comfortable by having a hypervisor between FreeNAS and my data. Do any of you have any suggestions on how I can best achieve my goals with a single server?
  9. Hi: I recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge R710 server with 32gb of RAM and a pair of slower quad-core processors with the intention of planning to play with some virtualization stuff on it. I also want it to do some a good bit of folding on it as well. When running a Linux Mint Mate 19.3 install on bare metal, it will crank out around 30k points a day quite steadily. However, with Proxmox as a hypervisor and running Ubuntu server in a VM with all 8 cores devoted to it, its given me all sorts of numbers, first 70k for a while, then 30k for a bit, then finally it drops down to about 12k points per day where it has been pretty steady for about an hour now. I am assuming the first number was some kind of anomaly. I was expecting to take some kind of hit from the overhead of the hypervisor and all that but not THIS big a hit. Is this what I should be expecting, or is there something I should be looking for in my Proxmox configuration or what? Brand new at VMs, so any help would be appreciated. >>>BULLET>>>
  10. Hello folks, I'm here today to ask something quite specific about hardware stuff. I know this period is quite weird in term of hardware and all but I'm planning a new setup for an home lab (with pseudo-gaming capacity). I've no urgent needs, so if it's worth to wait 2 or 3 extra months I'm OK with that. I'm looking for an upgrade of my current PC to fit some of my new needs. At the moment my custom build PC is : I5 2500K OC@~4.3Ghz (With an HYPER TX3 cooler) GTX 970 24 go of 1600 DDR3 RAM 128 Go SSD 2To HDD P8Z68 deluxe IIRC Old but good 850W power supply from Corsair To add a little bit of context, I'm looking to setup an home-lab with Windows (10) + Linux (Probably Arch / Ubuntu based) running simultaneously (hypervisor with 2 VMs : 1 Windows and 1 Linux. It will run some FPS games on the windows host (so with a GPU pass-through) and some other program that must run on windows (not some wine or similar stuff). For the games, CSGO / PUBG and Factorio are a must. My Linux setup is mostly for my nerdy hobbit (Dev, Automation, Security research, heavy computation...). I'm also planning to move some of the game server that I'm currently hosting on my VPS to this setup (Maybe even on an another Linux VM or at least on some containers) (CSGO, Factorio, mostly). I would like to switch from time to time the GPU to the Linux VM to try some linux-only programs with GPU support. My budget is around 1000€ but somewhat flexible. I want to keep as much as possible from my current system for cost reason. After some research I've come up with these things: 24 to 32 go of DDR4. CPU : I don't really know, I need "high" cores count and individual core speed... AMD / Intel doesn't matter. I'm just worried about AMD compatibility with some hypervisor and with Intel hyper-threading recent issues... I'm thinking about 8~ cores CPU : 4 for Windows and 4 to the Linux to still be able to do some heavy compute tasks. For the motherboard, support for over-clock and support for PCIE SSD + GPU(s) should be enough (1 PCIE slot for GPU + 1 for the PCIE SSD ? and maybe another one for a small GPU if the CPU doesn't provide any ?). It will obviously depend on the CPU and I don't care about RGB stuff (my case got red only fan) PCIE-SSD (Optional but that's seems cool for a setup like this) I've build 2 systems on pcpartpicker : AMD Based Intel Based I'm probably asking to much for that but if anyone got some compatibility issue with my peripherals on this type of setup, please let me know : Razer Deathadders HyperX cloud II Corsair K90 VG248qe monitor (144hz) and another 1080p monitor For the software side, I don't have strong knowledges in the hypervisor world, so which one is recommended for that kind of build? KVM ? EXSi ? XEN ? other? I'm OK to tinker with some system things. Additional questions: Is changing OS on the fly possible ? I don't want to restart the whole machine every time I need to go back on the other OS. I've seen some Windows vm inside a linux switching easly, but not VM to VM. Does a multi screen system with different refresh rates can cause problem ? (144hz and 60hz) and will the 144hz work ? Can I switch the GPU from VM to VM just with a restart of the VMs and a little change in the config file ? I will not be able to run VM (like virtualbox one's) inside the guests OSs right ? Thanks for any tips and suggestion ! (If you see any mistake, please let me know)
  11. Hello, I did a little searching through the LTT forums for any content related to Proxmox and ESXi. While I did find some information, I was unable to find any articles specifically comparing Proxmox and ESXi in terms of their features, and their drawbacks. I'd like to compile a list of features and drawbacks for Proxmox, ESXi, and any other hypervisors you see as good competition. The goal is to compare only free versions of software. Thanks!
  12. I'm wondering what most people here use for GPU passthrough. I have an old Dell Precision workstation that I'm trying to turn into a gaming box/home lab for Linux & Windows learning. I've tried VMWare ESXi and Proxmox KVM (based on Debian Linux) and got GPU passthrough working with both. Neither is perfect, but I'm leaning towards ESXi at the moment because I'm having so much trouble with audio on KVM. On KVM, I've got audio to the point that game audio plays OK, but Youtube has skipping and distortion problems when there's any background activity (downloads, disk transfers, etc.) Setting up GPU passthrough on KVM was also a good bit more painful than ESXi was. That's not to say that ESXi doesn't have problems. I couldn't get USB hotplug working in my Windows VM, so I had to resort to task scheduler to force a USB scan every minute. I also had to find a super-secret config file parameter to prevent "Code 43" errors with my GeForce GPU. But audio work great, even when there's a lot of background activity. Has anyone here had better experiences with their hypervisor of choice? Does Linus' favorite platform, Unraid, make it any easier to do passthrough?
  13. I'm just getting into the whole virtualization scene but am hoping to get rid of a couple physical server installs at work and also set up something similar to the Gaming NAS that linus demonstrated for Unraid. The two goals are very different in what they have. An enterprise grade server vs a homebuilt gaming machine. My question is, I see a lot of different virtual controllers which I'm gathering are referred to as hypervisors or whatever their counter parts in other companies are called. My questions are; Do Vmware or any of the other similar ones to that feature a RAID system similar to Unraid's or would that be done on a RAID controller like our Perc H710 in the server? Also what would Unraid's formation be considered as since it has designated parity drives instead of all the drives sharing parity data? I still have yet to start this project and intend to dig around in each of them but was hoping to get some questions out of the way. Thanks in advance!
  14. Just Wanting to talk about Hyper-V Virtualization on Enterprise hardware. Things like old Dell Poweredge R610's running windows 10 with Hyper-V? Dell R620 Overkill for virtualization for a startup? Differences between Hyper-V as an operating system and\or running as an application. Feature differences between Hyper-V on Windows Server and on Windows Pro installations.
  15. Background for context: I'm creating this topic to find what you guys think of these three operating systems and what the pros/cons of each are. That and I'm trying to come to the best conclusion as to what os i should use for the sole purpose of having a host for PCI-Passthrough for the guest VM's to have. I have enough money to get UnRaid OS (basic) if I really have to, and I say this because in my experience with using linux, I did all the steps necessary to get it working and not only that but i also made sure that all hardware in my server are in separate IOMMU groups (which they are, every last part are and no ACS override patch is necessary.) What bugs me the most is that after following all necessary steps to get it working, it always fails one way or another. The only distro that i know of that worked without spitting out errors to my face is Manjaro. But, there in lies another issue: OVMF Tianocore firmware not recognized by libvirt gui, and within the software library gui i had it installed and restarted my server and yet it still didn't recognize that it was included. That is unless my particular build of Manjaro is buggy then fair enough. But, until I can find out about it with manual testing (I don't have physical access to it for now because it is located at my father's house and the drive is a long way's away. There's a good reason for it, I don't trust my step family with my computer. period. And my father is FAR from computer illiterate and knows which is which. Moving on..) i will have to plan ahead and make sure that i can go with the best option and if necessary, i will buy just to get PCI Passthrough working. From reading a couple of forums, OpenSuse, Arch, CentOS and Gentoo are arguably the ones that are well-suited to have run as the host for having these vms. OpenSuse caught my eye in particular due to having a gui desktop, and the kernel(s) (if I'm not mistaken, otherwise please correct me) are pre-configured for this type of virtualization application. And the command line scheme is familiar to me because i am used to the "apt-get" style that i learned from ubuntu originally when i first began using linux. Speaking of that, why does manjaro have to have a confusing command scheme? Instead of "apt-get" its "pamac" or something else. I get that linux can be open source and the command variable schemes can be different but dang is it confusing the hell out of me. XP Anyway, that aside I don't mind getting my hands dirty to get PCI passthrough working just as long as it works, otherwise my genetically coded stubbornness thanks to my scotch-irishness will make me continue until insanity comes around to making it work. So, what i know so far already are: i.) Citrix XenServer is Windows-centric (i.e., requires the server management console software to be run on a windows system in order to create vms, etc. Note that there's an open source version of this said software for linux available.) ii.) in order to get vmware esxi i would have to put in a lot of info before i can buy a license or let alone download a free version of the said hypervisor software. iii.) In order to get to download XenServer hypervisor, i must create an account and i'll be able to download it for free or buy a license to get more features. (Makes sense if i have to do that so I can add the licensed vers. to my account's shopping cart to purchase, fair enough.) iv.) unraid requires that you get a trial key or a key that allows you to use it full time (basic, pro, etc.) made by purchasing a key. So, is there any info at this point that needs to be corrected? If so, please correct me. Use Case moving forward: In my head, i would have a host that i can get access to in order to create and spin up a vm so that i can not only run it as a server for my windows machine to play games but as well as a hackintosh rendering station for content creation (non-commercial; private use at home.) and finally have it serve up some media for my kodi/plex clients and be a general-purpose file server. Final Conclusion: So, in terms of: i.) ease to setup a vm with a pci host device passed through to guest machine without too much difficulty (i.e., the manjaro example where the ovmf firmware wasn't detected after installation of package.) ii.) ease to obtain an .iso. iii.) ease to setup the packages required to host vms (libvirt, qemu, ovmf, etc.) iv.) less prone to errors when passing through a host device to a vm (note: while all devices are in completely separate iommu groups.) So, in your experience or opinion, which distro mentioned here is best for this application?
  16. I'm planning a build based on the recently featured Airtop 3 by @AlexTheGreatish which I also loved. The main idea of the system is to be able to run several OSs in order to carry my fully featured case as I move around to LAN parties and occasionally abroad (Router, storage, gaming, media server, workstation for content creation and 3D workloads, etc), being able to just plug and play and have my VPN running and a few Tb of data on a local server ready to be pulled by Windows and Linux. What I haven't figured out yet is what's best for the virtualized environment and the system as a hole, as I see it is possible to accomplish this with unRAID, VMware, Hyper-V and so on. My experience in virtualization is very little, but I do know I need some kind of type 1 hypervisor, so... a little help in choosing which software I should use at the core of this build? Also hardware suggestions to go along the Airtop 3 are most welcome!
  17. Basically I had to use vmware for another project previously and disabled hypervisor through these commands in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGpv2Dvzyeg bcdedit /create {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} /d "DebugTool" /application osloader bcdedit /set {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} path "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\SecConfig.efi" bcdedit /set {bootmgr} bootsequence {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} bcdedit /set {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} loadoptions DISABLE-LSA-ISO,DISABLE-VBS bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off I currently need to use android studio emulation and have to turn it back on. Can anyone help me reverse this? I am using a ryzen processor which is what caused me all this headache in the first place...
  18. If I have a server with 4 network adapters and I want to team those interfaces would it be better to create two separate teams of (2) NIC's each? One team (2 NICs) for the host and one team (2 NICs) for the virtual machines or create a large single team of (4 NICs) and "share" the vNIC? The reason I am debating this is because if you have your virtual machines sending data and you're also doing replication of your VMs (Host Traffic) in theory it seems like it would be better to split this traffic however I may be wrong in my thinking. I'm hoping someone else can give me some insight. I also believe that software teaming in Windows doesn't actually give you a aggregated (4Gbps) of throughput. Instead you would have to configure something like LACP with Etherchannel? Just looking for someone with some more experience in this. Thanks
  19. I would like to be pointed in the right direction to figure out which Hyperviser solution would be best for my use (even if its paid). I don't know much about virtualization but want to get into it right, so I want to invest my time to learning something that is more on the professional side, rather than products like FreeNAS. I would like to set up my hard drives and SSDs in a manner that is done in pro environments. My aim is to get into using VMs and redundant storage on a separate computer other than my daily. I believe the best way for me to go about this is to maybe reuse my Dell poweredge server or probably just build my own server, with a hypervisor on the bare metal with VMs and Docker containers to do my tasks in a reliable machine that will also provide long term storage for photos, videos, work related files, chat logs, images backups and also bulk storage for video projects and video game libraries. [keep in mind I do plan to just buy the things i need, I'm not necessarily bound to using what I have so I'm not listing anything] My main goal, have one machine do it all. -To act as relabel and expandable "NAS" for my longer term storage for projects and backups (I do have proper backups, this is for convenience) -To have expandable faster general storage for video game libraries and open projects (maybe SSD cached?) -To have VMs that can be created and changed for w.e my next crazy idea is (instead of using a bunch of old desktops) Long term goal is to have this machine do all above and -To act and my network DHPC with a pfSense firewall running on a VM with dedicated pass through network card, which will go to a dumb switch and wifi access point. My current idea is; - To use Proxmox (as it supports containers) which will be installed on a USB drive. (IDK if this is the best HV for my use and want feedback) maybe ESXi 6.5? - Create groups of 4 or so drives on separate HBAs or to motherboard SATA to create groups of drives for my volumes (encase I want to physically move a volume and rebuild it else where) - Create a ZFS? volumes for use for my VMs, containers, Vswitches and experiments to run on, that will be redundant and fast - Create a volume (with ssd cache?) for bulk data like video games and open projects that is also redundant and open* for access to my network - Create a "super safe" redundant pool for long term storage for photos, finished projects and image back ups. that is also open* to my network (anything I really want to keep will be put on removable media as well) *I only use one PC for daily use, so I could mount these volumes to my desktop over the network I'm not sure if Proxmox has the native ability to manage drives or if people use RAID cards on top of that? I would rather not use RAID cards because I want the drive monitoring and the ability to rebuild the volumes on another computer if need be. Would I need to run a VM to manage my storage if Proxmox doesn't support this need? or would it all be better to just put all my drives together and make vpartitions for these volumes? though I am fine with having a couple HBAs to section off these 4 drives for "safe storage" and another 2 mirrored drives and ssd for general storage and 2 more for the VMS. Is it standard practice to pool everything together? what would you suggest? ~ Why am I doing this? I enjoy this stuff, but I'm not great at it. I used to have a Dell poweredge server set up before doing similar things but with Windows 7 on the metal and most the drives on a RAID controller with partitions shareable on the network... this wasn't secure and ended up failing. Now I run a bunch of single drives in a huge PC tower and USB back up drives, it takes up a lot of space in the office when you factor in a old PC running pfSense and another running a mail severer with some game worlds for family and myself to use. There has got to be a better way. Soon I will be doing away with my rig for something newer which will be in a much smaller case, so I need this data to be somewhere. Like many on this forum, I have been following LTT for a long time and seen their various means of storage, but it usually lacks details about what services they run on and why. Though I'm assuming most, if not all is Win server 2012. (I'm thinking of Petabyte project and such) this is where I get my inspiration. So in my quest to tinker and learn more about computers and servers my needs for safe storage and work machines has grown. Like the natural progression of the computer industry, running many physical machines for light tasks and reinstalling windows and such has become a ineffective mess.
  20. Hi all, Pretty sure this is my first time posting on LTT so first, nice to meet you all! Now that the formalities are out of the way, let's get down to business. For the last what feels like forever, I've been trying to get Hyper-V working for me again. There was a point months ago where I had it installed on my computer but due to disk space issues, I decided to remove the feature and its VMs and drives. Upon purchasing a larger SSD and installing it in my system, I reinstalled Hyper-V. Since then, however, I've been unable to create any virtual switches. Even attempting to open the Virtual Switch Manager results in the following error: I've run sfc/ scannnow and tried restoring the image health with DISM and neither have found any errors in my OS image that would cause this. My computer is an Asus GL752VW. i7-6700HQ, 16GB DDR4 RAM, running Windows 10 Pro Ver. 1803 Build 17134.285. Any chance anyone else has had this issue and might be able to guide me through resolving this? Thanks!

  22. I'm in a need of an hypervisor (free or cheap) that support nested hyper-v, pcie passthrough without uefi (the server is an hp dl380g7, supports vt-d and ept) and zfs filesystem support. I already checked unraid and proxmox and they don't support all of the things supported above (nested Hyper-v or pcie passthrough without uefi) I hope someone can help me.
  23. Heya guys, Hope everyone is still safe during this strange times! I seek guidance, can someone please help me? Currently I have running a proxmox server with dual xeon e5-2680v2, 256Gb ram and plenty of storage (plenty for me). I also have freenas running on that server and currently the disks are passed through directly by using “disk by-id” The disks are all connected to a HBA which isn’t something manageable like in enterprise servers. Everything is working well, but how do I change the disk by id to just passing through the PCI-e device? Because when I try to it just shows up no drives. What are the advantages of the pci-e device against loose disks? Is there any at all? Does it fix my smart values inside freenas Also… does it fix the hotplug function which my drive bays has? Lots of questions I know! But thanks in common! Cheers
  24. I'm starting on a new build for a bare metal hypervisor, which will be running the following VMs : 1. pfSense (ISP Bandwidth - 50 Mbps symmetrical, IPSec enabled) --> 2GB RAM 2. Windows Server 2019 (DC/DNS/DHCP/BlueIris) --> 8GB RAM 3. NextCloud Community Edition --> 4GB RAM 4. FreePBX (4 Extensions). --> 2GB RAM Blue Iris running 8 cameras @ 4k, motion detection enabled, direct to disk recording, no transcoding. I'm on a tight budget, hence I have only two options : 1. Xeon E5-2678V3 (12 Cores) / Huananzhi X99-F8 + 32GB DDR4 ECC 2. Ryzen 7 1700X (8 Cores) / ASUS Prime B550-PLUS + 32GB DDR4 ECC Both the CPUs have nearly equivalent all cores performance, however single thread performance of 1700X >> E5-2678. I know more physical cores are better than faster cores, but since I'm running only 4 VMs, I was wondering that higher speed cores might just turn out to be better in this case. I need this build to be stable, since this will be located on a farmhouse that my family owns, far away from my house, and it will be primarily for monitoring the area for intruders, a]nd I am also a little bit skeptical about running all of this on a chinese x99 motherboard. What would you guys recommend ? Budget (including currency): ~$250 Country: India Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Hypervisor
  25. Hi LTT Fans. I am looking for some one opinion what it better for a vms lab on a server i had looked into proxmox and xen server that is your thoght thanks the ression it a persinal vm lab i use linux and windows guest
