  1. Running Ubuntu 18.04 normal via Hyper-V (using it as steamcache server) I shut down the VM - the tried to boot into Ubuntu VM again and got a black screen - in GNU im trying to repair borken packages and i get this: https://imgur.com/a/xlcJ47k This is the SSD i have the VM in, it clearly has enough disk space, so whats the problem? Disk info in Hyper-v also shows there should be space Edit: System-summary shows disk is full - how and why? With 500GB of cached games on the VM - i sadly, had to reinstall ubuntu. This time i made sure that the disk size was sett to 930Gb - insted of 465.
  2. I'm having issues trying to get emulation running on Android Studio and I was hoping someone has an idea on how to get it working? I recently rebuilt my PC going from I7-6850k to AMD 3900X with new Mobo and faster RAM. Prior to the rebuild I had it working with no problem, so I don't know if it's a compatibility issue with the Intel Software on AMD, but from what I've researched I can see other people are able to use it, so I must be missing a step somewhere? The error I get on trying to install is: If I try to run the installer directly I get a similar error message: I can confirm that Virtualisation is working as I use VirtualBox a lot. Confirmed in Task Manager: I've confirmed that HyperVisor is unavailable in Windows Features and HyperVisor Plaftorm is enabled (apparently it needs that to run the emulation) I also confirmed that Windows Defender Core Isolation is disabled (as it uses Hyper-V to perform it's task) But I'm stuck. I can't see what else I need to enable to get it working and without the emulation running I can't check what I'm doing *sad beeps*
  3. Does anyone know of any sites or videos of folks that have done an assessment of the real-world impact of Hyper-V on gaming? From what I've seen, enabling Hyper-V in the OS means your Windows install is actually running virtualized on Hyper-V itself even if you don't have any VMs. Because of this, Hyper-V reserves part of the GPU for virtualization even if it's not used and this reduces your gaming performance. While all I'm seeing online is anecdotal evidence, I would love to know the real-world impact. Also, all the articles about it reference Windows 8 instead of the more-common Windows 10. It's possible that issue has been fixed over time. As far as I know, if you want to do work that involves Hyper-V, then run: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype on When you want to play games, use: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off And after doing either of those commands, you'd need to restart. Does anyone have any better info or links with regards to Hyper-V performance with no guest machines?
  4. Hello, folks, At the moment we have a number of VMs running on Hyper-V. The hypervisors are included in several failover clusters. During maintenance these machines are manually updated by removing the server from the cluster. Then an updated image is rolled out again and added to the cluster. Does anyone have a solution to automate this process as much as possible? The servers are managed via System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).
  5. Im trying to set up a steam cache server on a vm. But i cant ping the vm machine from my main computer. Whats wrong? The vm can connect to the internet on its own, but i cant ping it locally Im using hyper-v as virutalization. I have 2 vms running. 1 is running pihole. 2 (trying to run steamcache) - but i cant even ping it.... the dns on the steamcache is the pihole dns. Didnt help to change it to 1.1.1.1 Both are using the same viritual internet switch - is that the problem? The Steamcache IP shows up in router
  6. Hi guys, we are trying to convert 3 windows ESXI instances to Hyper-V as out customer would like to move to hyper-v. We decided to use the starwind V2V converter after some success with in office testing. When we came to doing the project live we were able to convert 2 out of the 3 instances. the 2 we converted were set up in Legacy mode. The last one which is the Domain controller is a UEFI Windows Server 2012R2 instance. it converts successfully but when we try to launch the Gen-2 instance in hyper-v, we see the spinning dots and the get an error of "windows has encountered an error and will reboot" I believe it also says inaccessible boot device but the screen only appears for millisecond before rebooting. After a second attempt with the same results it loads into recovery mode. unfortunately the customer does not know the root / recovery AD password as we need that to open CMD to try running some commands. We have left everything as in on the ESXI and left it there. We have also booted into a ISO image and tried all the bootrec / bcdedit commands suggested online but none of them work. We tried doing a Acronis 12.5 Backup of the server and then restore it as a VM this also failed with the same simptoms we also installed a shell server 2012R2 in UEFI mode and the tried to restore the C drive from the server to the C drive of the shell 2012r2 but the results were still the same. We have created a ESXI VMDK as well to test in office to see if we can boot that on our test environment and try to perform some more in house testing. Does anyone have any suggestions we could try ? not sure why the boot device is inaccessible after the conversion. all the other servers had no issues. Thanks !
  7. I can't enable virtualization technology. I tried disabling Hyper-V and tried to enable vt-x in BIOS settings, but it won't enable. Any solutions?
  8. I have had the best experience thus far with VirtualBox out of the many VM solutions I have tried on Windows (despite its XP-esque GUI styling). But please, change my mind - what is your go to VM solution, and why? Which one gives you the easiest snapshot, restore, and network isolation.
  9. Hi! I'm looking for help in this matter (apologies in advanced for my English, not my native language) Recently migrated a few VMs to a different host running Windows Server 2019... I set up VSS (24 hours, 8 RP) and replication to another host running Windows Server 2019. The thing is I'm getting this weird errors on some of the VMs Hyper-V failed to generate VSS snapshot set for virtual machine 'SRV-XXX': This operation returned because the timeout period expired. (0x800705B4). VSS snapshot set generation can fail if backup operation is in progress. (Virtual machine ID 180E42ED-058D-46DB-A5A2-8E91342A6F5A) And, on a particular VM - Windows Server 2012 r2 (which is a FS and we have shadow copies set up) I'm getting a few errors... one is that the VSS process hangs and the computer freezes (no explorer to interact or whatsoever, file sharing works tho) in this case I've to do a reboot and it will fix the error. Checking the logs I'm getting this error: Faulting application name: DPMRA.exe, version: 4.2.1603.0, time stamp: 0x59dcc367 Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.2.9200.22753, time stamp: 0x5ccba6bc Exception code: 0x809909c2 Fault offset: 0x000000000002c978 Faulting process id: 0x600 Faulting application start time: 0x01d5478d05a3c8d5 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin\DPMRA.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\KERNELBASE.dll Report Id: e488b324-b3e5-11e9-9442-00155d053204 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: . Things I've already tried: - deleted all the shadow copies on the server - reinstall DPM agent - disable Shadow Copies on the server did make a difference, but it's not an option May someone around can help me out Thanks!"
  10. I want to prepare a word document that tells about the simple, well-known to most IT people, best practices for Hyper-V cluster, DNS, DHCP, WSUS and Active Directory. I already did some research but most of the information is or outdated or not simple to understand. I would appreciate the help. In the meantime, I will keep on researching
  11. Just Wanting to talk about Hyper-V Virtualization on Enterprise hardware. Things like old Dell Poweredge R610's running windows 10 with Hyper-V? Dell R620 Overkill for virtualization for a startup? Differences between Hyper-V as an operating system and\or running as an application. Feature differences between Hyper-V on Windows Server and on Windows Pro installations.
  12. Hoping someone here can help, since every Google I've thrown at this thinks my problem is something else. On my home network, I've repurposed my old PC as a Hyper-V server. I figured I might as well put that CPU and memory to good use, as I often run 2-3 Virtual Machines and my laptop resources were stretched thin. HOWEVER. When I connect to a Hyper-V machine on this new "server" now - I hit a different bottleneck. For some reason, Windows on my laptop uses the onboard GPU to drive the session - not my Geforce card. It's a dual GPU Dell laptop. So just connecting to this remote VM is now causing my system to stress. When I ran the very same VM locally, I never had any issue. Please note; this is NOT about getting RemoteFX to work or anything similar - this is where Google takes me whenever I try and search for this problem. It is strictly about getting my connection to the remote Hyper-V server to NOT use my underpowered onboard card, but instead the NVidia card. Any insights? :-)
  13. So... The university I study in uses windows 10 pro in i'ts computers, but also provides licenses for the students. That's pretty cool, but for this particular project I am limited to only use Hyper-V, despite knowing that a much simpler solution might be using Portable VirtualBox. So, what I need is to be able to carry arround the hyper-v virtual machine in a drive so that i can connect it either to my computer running hyper-v or the university computer running hyper-v... I've looked a bit on google, but found not quite an answer. I am still going to give a trial and error to learn what I can and can't do, but first I wanted to know what you can tell me about this.
  14. Sup LTT! So I created a short video tutorial (9 minutes in runtime) covering the installation of Pi-hole in the Windows operating systems via Hyper-V & using Debian Linux. This provides network wide ad-blocking as well enhanced security via DNS redirection, completely for free. You gotta keep in mind this works across your entire network; so phones, tablets, gaming consoles, smart televisions, etc. all benefit from this. It also has a pretty sweet web based GUI that you can use for blacklisting domains, looking up queries, checking on your clients, etc. Can make network management much easier depending on what type of setup you might be using. I tried to be as straight forward as possible & also put study aids on the screen throughout the process so that you don't have to try to see the tiny text I'm typing in as it's happening. This is not a process you should fear & is extremely easy to do, it delights me to be able to show off the ease of install inside nine minutes. Though I looked up the community guidelines and they specifically say I can't post this video I've made without; "2 - The video is only to complement your complete, written post on the site. You cannot simply post a video." So I'll include a bit of a write up as well to appease the mod gods! (or just Luke, I'm doing this to appease Luke) Now my default forum of choice on the net has been ArsTechnica for the last 18 years, so yes, you're going to see this posted over there too. I'm trying to share the love. Anyways back on topic, basically what we're doing here is opening up a hyper-v environment so you can run a copy of linux on top of your windows operation system. Why? So we can install Pi-hole which blocks over 100,000 ad-serving domains through a DNS redirect on your network. This has the included benefits of improving your network performance (since ads are blocked before they are downloaded altogether) & reducing your data usage if you happen to be on a bandwidth cap. To start you'll need an operating system capable of Hyper-V. Wikipedia has a beautiful list of all the supported operating systems, so check if yours is on there. If so you can do this! If you can have it but don't have it installed, you'll need to go into your Control Panel, then to Add/Remove Programs. In modern windows versions this is called Programs and Features. From there, inside the new window that pops up, on the left side will be an option to "Turn Windows Features On or Off", this is where you need to go to install Hyper-V. Simply check the box next to it in the new window that pops up & follow the install prompts. Next on our journey you'll need the newest version of the Debian Linux distro. (make sure to download the appropriate version for the machine you're running on, for example, a modern computer will require the amd64 iso) Why do we need this? Because Pi-hole was originally meant to be booted on top a Raspberry-Pi and it's grown from there. Here we don't require a Raspberry-Pi, anything that requires money, or even physical objects beyond what we already own. So now that we have Hyper-V installed & a fresh copy of Debian we begin. As shown in the video, you'll need to create a virtual switch first. This is very simple, just click the switch manager on the right & create a new one. Make sure to select your adapter that is currently supplying your internet connection. With that done we can simply create a new virtual machine, you really do not need beef settings to make this happen. It can be done on 1GB of ram & a single processor though like anything, it will benefit the more you open it up. In the video I gave the virtual machine 4GB of ram & 10GB of hard drive space, THIS WAS PLENTY. Make sure to select the Debian iso to be inside your virtual dvd drive when the machine is turned on. It's just like any other operating system install just much easier & faster. Once this is done we need to install Curl so that we can then install Pi-hole, we also need to make sure the machine is now on a static IP so that the other devices on the network always know where their DNS server is. I've actually put this on the screen in the video but if you're interested in reading it, the basic command process to this is: su root apt-get install curl nano /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.10.95 (your pi-hole static ip) netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.10.1 (your gateway) reboot su root curl -sSL https://install.pi-hole.net | bash pihole -a -p newpassword set router manual DNS settings primary = 192.168.10.95 (your pi-hole static ip) secondary = 8.8.8.8 (emergency google backup) apply & push router changes across network connect to 192.168.10.95/admin (use pi-hole ip) As discussed in the video you're going to want to comment out the last two lines of "/etc/network/interfaces" before writing in your new static address. You're also going to want to select a static address that is outside of your DHCP lease range so that it doesn't accidentally get leased to another device if your Hyper-V happens to go down. Next as seen in the instructions above, we need to go into your actual router & change your DNS settings to point to the new Pi-hole installation. This will be your Primary DNS for your Secondary DNS we're going to use Google's primary server. Why? This is for emergency backup! If your hyper-v goes offline, you forget about it, or say, the machine it's running on is shut off altogether then your network will default to google instead of just going offline. Unfortunately there won't be any ad-blocking going on at that point but that's far better then everybody on your network being upset that there's no internet access. After this all we have to do is connect to the Pi-hole web interface via any browser. Just point your address bar at the static IP your Pi-hole is running on, drop a /admin after it & login. You don't really need to do this, there's not many reasons to come over and manage the software. Mainly it's where you can investigate all the clients on your network, see problem areas, blacklist them, or even whitelist domains if you need to. You can see device temps here, charts, graphs, hella logs, you name it. It's a very simple but powerful interface that works extremely well. At the end of the video, after recording live, you can see it's running on only 700mb of memory. It really takes absolutely nothing to run Pi-hole an it has massive benefits for everything inside your network. That's why I wanted to share it with everybody! Anyways if you have any questions feel free to post though I am not associated with the project at all. I've posted this same video on their subreddit though if you happen to want to drop an upboat for me. (it would be appreciated!) I'm sure they would be much more qualified at answering in-depth technical questions then myself, though I will try my best to help out where I can. If still interested you can view the video tutorial on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgUZ9fccBCU Much love, 'Gobby PS: Here you go Luke, that'll keep things interesting.
  15. Hey guys. Just looking for some opinions about running a minecraft server in a Hyper-V VM using MineOS as the host OS, Pros and cons, expected bugs and issues. I am looking to get a "new" rack mount server (Dell r710) with dual 6 core 12 thread xeons and 64gb of ram to host mutiple game servers at once. The other games i want to host i already know work fine in a VM. As i know minecraft servers can be flakey af i thought i would get some opinions before attemting it. I am planning on running Forge 2768 on MC version 1.12.2 with around 30 odd mods and was going to dedicate an entire spare 500gb hdd or spare ssd i have to that VM just to avoid any read/write bottle necks and probably like 10gb or more of ram to it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers ShmoeMo
  16. Hey all, I enabled Hyper-V and Docker to take a look at containerization and some next-gen virtual machines. However, when I try to play Fortnite with everything turned on, Windows blue screens with a PAGED_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error. Turning off Hyper-V and Docker can't be done without uninstalling both completely. This means most of my development work and server containers would have to be reinstalled after every game. Anyone have any ideas? I think it might be related to the anti-cheat Epic is using since Hyper-V can enforce some strong memory protections (from what I've read). In the meantime, I'm going to try reinstalling from scratch and see if that fixes it.
  17. Good morning from Germany, I would like to connect a physical Maschine to a virtual internal switch (for example in hyper-v) to test software without having multiple machines available to the router. Haven't tried it yet but if I would create a pfSense VM with a physical nic to the PC and a internal one for internet connectivity wouldn't work, right?
  18. Afternoon all, Got a nice DL150 g6 last week to use as my main VM server, im having a few issues running multiple VM's from a 3tb WD red drive. Has anyone else had any other issues with these drives in this use case. I think i will probable have to get a 7200rpm drive for this but on the off change anyone has any other recommendations it would be much appreciated. I have been thinking of using a 3tb Toshiba but i have read that they arent to reliable. please bare in mind that i am not made of money and cannot effort to get a enterprise grade drive. cheers all
  19. Hi all, I'm looking for some advice from the community about what server hardware I should have/get to run a number of virtual machines. My current server uses: Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. H81M-S2H 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 790MHz (11-11-11-28) Intel Core i5 4460 @ 3.20GHz Haswell 120GB SSD for Windows Server 2012 R2 (std. edition) 2x 3TB WD Reds for file share and backup At the moment I the server itself runs my Plex, Media share and hosts Hyper-V. The only virtual machine I have running also runs on Server 2012 R2, but only has IIS and SQL server installed for my web site. I'm running into an issue where I think the hardware is either limiting me or letting me down, but I can't seem to spin up more than one VM at a time, or last VM to boot halts, and the Hyper-V management service locks up forcing me to hard reset the whole box as then everything cascades to a halt. Was my hardware choice OK for use as a 24/7 server? Did I make a stupid mistake somewhere cheaping out or should I have been OK with whats there? I'd like to use hardware that's more robust, but I can't afford to buy a complete rack server. I have a rack but it's 6U and will only support short cases, so it's currently sitting unused. I also want to have options for additional storage, currently the board I have limits me to 4 SATA disks, including the OS disk,
  20. Hello glorious-PC-master race ! I've stumbled upon something here and I would like ot hear your opinion or even a solution to the following. I've installed Linux Mint on Windows 10 Enter-for-prize (Enterprise) Hyper-V. Created a brand new VM and all good to go. The only issue I'm facing is that there is no hardware video acceleration on the VM. Any thoughts ? (Running 64 bit both Host and Guest OS).
  21. I am running a windows XP sp3 virtual machine using Hyper-v to play older games on, but audio does not work trough the normal hyper-v client sadly. i don't want to go trough oracles virtualbox. i would prefer KVM but thats way above my skill level. i can not seem to connect to the virtual machine using the "remote desktop connection" build into windows. im pretty new to this (i have run VM's before but nothing special). specs: i5-6600k asus z170 pro gaming no dGPU 16gb 3ghz DDR4 ram 550 watt power supply. some shitty wd laptop drive and a shitty wd blue drive.
  22. Just come to install Windows Server 2012r2 evaluation on Hyper-v, its asking me for drivers. Never happened to me before even when installing 2012r2. Where can i find the disk drivers if there are any. =)
  23. Hello everyone, I have another dilemma here. I currently run VMWare's ESXI (free) on my server. At one point, I was thinking of buying it, because I'll be adding an additional CPU to the second socket. Right now, it is just the one CPU and 32GB Memory. But, I want to expand and add more raw power. Anywho, the following is the issue: Cost. It would cost me over $2000 to buy VMWare and another $3000 per year for the required/mandatory support license. That is insane. The server is the central hub for my small business (IT Company). It harbors our website on redundant VMs, monitoring tools, patch management, VPN, and support desk. Not a lot. We use Google Apps for our e-mail and no hardware heavy apps like SQL. I don't see the cost effectiveness of VMWare to us. I don't mind paying for a solution, but the cost of VMWare outweighs the benefits, since we don't use 90% of the features. What I'm looking for in terms of a system is the following features: - Support for Windows OS up to Server 2016 - Support for Linux (mainly Ubuntu Server) - Support for up to 64GB memory - Support for over 8TB of disk space storage (I do like the feature for VMWare's storage pools) - Preferably a web-based remote management feature (not required, but I don't much fancy VMWare's vSphere, it is too clunky and slow) I've looked into unRAID, but not a fan of it.
  24. Hi All! This is my first time posting here but I was hoping someone out there would have some information on the issue I am having. I have a custom built gaming desktop with the following hardware: ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 FE DirectX 12 ZT-P10800A-10P 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support ... Intel Core i7-6700K Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80662I76700K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics ... G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Intel X99 Platform Extreme ... Crucial MX300 2.5" 525GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT525MX300SSD1 CORSAIR CS-M Series CS550M 550W 80 PLUS GOLD Active PFC Haswell Ready ATX12V & EPS12V Modular Power Supply My goal is to enable virtualization on my MOBO for the purpose of running Hyper-V. I would build my computer with a clean install of Windows 10, do all Windows Updates, update all the drivers for the GTX 1080. And when I run the HTC VIVE setup, I would get a BSOD during the setup (specifically when the drivers for the Head Gear itself is installing) OR I would get a BSOD the next time I reboot/boot my computer. The BSOD does not give an error code or stop code, just a sad face. It would then prompt me to "Restore" to an earlier point. This will work 50% of the time and when it restores to an earlier point, it would be a point before Steam VR is installed. Other times it would loop in diagnosing the error and not being able to resolve it. When this happens, I cannot boot into safe mode, cannot do a repair, and cannot recover from this. It would loop in a BSOD and have no actual stop code or error code. When viewing the event log, the error I get is error 0x0 "your computer unexpectedly shut down due to a crash, power loss, or error" ***paraphrasing*** My computer works fine if I have virtualization enable on the MOBO and running Hyper-V with multiple VMs My computer works fine if I do not have virtualization enabled on the MOBO and running my HTC VIVE VR system There always seems to be an issue if I have both configured at the same time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
