I bought an HP DL380 G9 early this year as my main home server and it has just been sitting around. The server will serve a variety of purposes for me. I'd like it to be a PLEX media server for all of my DVDs, so I can easily store them and retrieve them later. I'd want to save all of my game files on it as well (GTA V, Occasional Minecraft world saves...). Also, as a generic backup for miscellaneous computer files. I'm not sure whether this is possible with this server, but having no disks in my computer and having it boot from this server would be nice in the future. This last one isn't a big deal if it is not possible though. The Specs of the server are: >2x Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 >32GB DDR4 ECC (1Rx8 2400T, 8x 4GB sticks) >B140i Controller - can be put in HBA mode >12x 500GB WD Blue 7200rpm SATA Drives - these probably should be upgraded >2x 800w 80+ Platinum Power Supplies >10G SFP+ Card The connection from the server to the main network switch will be SFP+ 10G and all the devices around the house will be 1GbE for now and maybe consider 10GbE in the future (Is 10GbE needed for network booting with no drives in the computer?) I was thinking UNRAID for the main OS and I am if each of these use cases should be a different VM or how I should set it up. I am open to upgrading certain parts of the server (Processor, more RAM, better HDDs, SSD cache?...) Let me know your ideas! I appreciate them! I am a CS college student but I am just starting so this is new to me.

I have an HP Proliant 380 G6. It has 8, 2.5" drive bays and I need at least 7TB (10 would be the perfect sweet spot) of storage with some kind of RAID for protection, also keep in mind 1 or 2 bays need to be filled with the OS, which is currently on a 15k drive, though I have another I would like to use in RAID 1. What is the cheapest way I can achieve this? If the 2.5" drives are limiting, what are my best NAS options? I know a picture has no factor on the choices but just wanted to show off what I got going so far!

Hi all, this is really intimidating but I've been wanting to build my own storage server for a long time. I'm about to build my first server, and have the majority of parts spec'd out. I just have a few questions/concerns if I can run them by everyone I'd appreciate it. It's also my first post on the forum lol. Basically, I want to use this server for data storage purposes. I have no need for virtualization currently. My first concern, is I see some people go around saying on Reddit I shouldn't use FreeNAS not being used as a 'server os'. The reply continued with - " FreeNAS isn't a server OS. It's very capable as a NAS, but you'll run into problems sooner or later if you try to treat it like an actual server. You might be better off using Debian (Server) + KVM." But what confused me, is Snazzy Labs video "I Built a HUGE 336TB Server Without Linus Tech Tips!" stated that he had a similar (if not the same) server to what I am looking at, and he stated he was using the operating system FreeNAS, and not much else was elaborated on. I basically want to hook everything up, and have an easy time installing the software needed so I can have proper data storage. Is Snazzy Right? Should I just get the HP Proliant, get drives, and install FreeNAS? Is it done like a regular PC? Flash Drive, ISO image, set boot drive, and install the operating system? As for my parts : HP Proliant DL360 G8 Server TP-Link 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch Raising Electronics 27U 4 Post Open Frame Server Rack CyberPower OR500LCDRM1U Smart App LCD UPS System Are all okay? Do you have any better recommendations? I'm on a tight budget. Again, my main concern is how to install the OS, what OS to install (I Need something simple, I am new to NAS software and what have you), etc Thanks everyone in advance! Brian

Hi all, I'm looking to add more storage to my server that's full of 4 internal drives. It's an HP Proliant DL360e 1u with 4 hard drive bays. I'm interested in getting a disk shelf (any recommendations? Does it need to be an HP disk shelf?) How do I hook it up to an HP Proliant DL360e g8 server? Do I just need to get a SAS host bus adapter, and hook it up to the disk shelf with external SAS cables? Does the SAS Host bus adapter need to be an HP branded one? Or are more PCI ones compatible with an HP DL360e g8? When the sas cable is connected to the two servers, should I get the same raid controller for the disk shelf? Do raid controllers typically come with a disk shelf? Or is a raid controller needed if I'm using a HBA? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Please keep the wording/terms as simple as possible. I just built my first server and I'm still pretty dumb on this stuff. Also, I bought 2 sticks of RAM and none match what is currently in my server. (Here's what I have - https://imgur.com/a/PJPyJ7U) If anyone can help me purchase more it'd be greatly appreciated. Will any ram work as long as it's 10600R speed at 8GB? Shoot me links to recommendations. Have a great day!

So I am looking to get a HP Proliant or equal server to use as a NAS with Plex and a VM. There are a few questions: 1) is there a way to make the server quieter, 2) is it possible to use the P410 RAID card as a dumb input card for HDD hot swap and 3) is it even worth it? Thanks.

I am thinking about building a new NAS. This is my first real NAS, so correct me if i'm wrong about certain things. I had made previous posts on the topic, but they are now outdated since I wasn't ready to purchase at the time. I am looking for a storage server mainly for backups and a plex server. I was thinking I could combine the two into something like a Dell PowerEdge r720XD but if someone thinks they should be separate, let me know. I have a mis-mosh of random drives so I think I need to use UNRaid as the main OS and then I could use CentOS for the Storage Server and Ubuntu for the Plex Server. For specs I was thinking 12 cores and 64GB+ of RAM. I think I need to allocate most of the resources to the Plex Server since there could be multiple people streaming off it at once, where as the Storage Server probably wont have more than 1 user accessing it at a time. I would like decent transfer speeds however. I was thinking I would need to add in an SSD for a L2 cache, but I saw people recommending to not use a L2 cache. These are the drives I have: 2x 1TB 7200rpm HDD 1x 320GB 5400rpm HDD 1x 1TB 5400rpm HDD 1x 750GB 7200rpm HDD 1x 500GB 7200rpm HDD These are all Desktop-Based HDD's and as they die I will replace them with NAS equivalent HDD's. My budget is $350, but there is a little wiggle room if necessary. The UNRaid License is not included in that cost, but if someone had a Free-Alternative that would be appreciated. The only thing that I can think of for other storage options are HP Proliants, but I don't know much about them. Is the Dell PowerEdge r720XD too old? All suggestions are appreciated too.

Hello, I recently was given a few decommissioned servers and I am trying to determine the current value. I’ll try to post the current specs to the best of my knowledge. HP Proliant DL380p G8 dual Intel Xeon CPU E5-2620 v2 @ 2.10Ghz they each have 6 cores with hyperthreading enabled 128gb Advanced ECC RAM 6 x 600gb 15k SAS HDDs in the Server’s 12 available 3.5in HDD bays. HP Proliant DL380 G7 1 Intel Xeon CPU E5620 @ 2.40Ghz 4cores with hyperthreading enabled 16gb ECC RAM 4 300gb “6G DP 10k” SAS HDDs in the 8 available 2.5in bays Just looking for a realistic estimated value. I know it is difficult to sell used servers as most businesses looking for servers will buy brand new ones. Thanks for the help!

This is my first question: How could I install windows 10 on a server using a hard drive with windows 10. I have been wanting to build a gaming pc and my price budget was going to be around £500. So my thoughts were to get either a ryzen 3 or 5, a gtx 1050 ti, 8gb ram, 500w PSU and a b350 mobo. Then my dad said that he's got some towers at his work that he could bring back. He brought back 2 computers. One of them was quite an old one but still working with windows 10. The other was an hp pro liant server that has an Intel Xeon 1230, 8gb ddr4, 350W PSU but as it is a server it was running windows server 2012. And the last thing is that the server has some ransomware on it so it is impossible to use windows server. My idea was to use the hard drive from the old but working computer that has windows 10 and put it in the server and try to boot off it. It has not been as easy as it seems. I have only really found one possible solution but it seems to be quite complicated as its using a remote controller for it but I'm not sure whether I could use it as I don't quite understand how all his steps are done. https://homeservershow.com/blog/hp-microserver/install-windows-10-pro-x64-on-hpe-proliant-ml30-gen9/ I think it would be possible but it could get very complicated so if you have any other suggestions please do give them. My second question: What I should and shouldn't use from the server to make it a gaming pc After I manage to get windows 10 working on the server I was thinking I would get a new case first and a 120gb SSD to store windows 10, chrome and some other important apps or games. Of course, I will be wanting a GPU but that will probably be one of my last purchases for the initial build as they're not cheap. I'm probably going to wait after Christmas for the GPU till I have more money and GPU prices hopefully will have gone down. I will be using the ram from the server and the cpu+heatsink but I'm not sure if I'll need a new mobo and PSU for when I get the GPU. Also, could I have recommendations on which GPU to buy either a 1050 ti or wait a bit more to get a 1060? Case: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/6Vwqqs/corsair-case-cc9011085ww SSD: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/2FDzK8/kingston-a400-120gb-25-solid-state-drive-sa400s37120g If you've read this all the way thanks a lot even if you can't help but if you have any suggestion whether it's about the build or trying to get windows 10 on the server pls do reply. If you need extra information pls do ask. Thanks a lot for reading this.

Good morning, midday or evening depending on where you are. A while back i bought a old HP Proliant ML350 G3 which was a steal because one of the SCSI discs was broken so it costed me only 10 quid and got some extra RAM and 2 redundant power suplies with it. After that it's just been sitting here for a while, I was intended to set up as a website hosting service but I soon forgot about it / didn't have the time to do something with it. Lately I was thinking of turning it into a NAS or a gaming hosting server (simple stuff like terraria or minecraft. Just for friends and me) but I soon found out why it is so cheap. It's slow as crap! So I decided to upgrade it to the max! And I want to start with the (in my mind) most important thing to start with: The processor. Acutally processors! Since it has 2 CPU slosts. And thats what my question is about. I want to upgrade tot the baddest possible processors around for my server and money isn't a roll in this since most of them only cost like 15 quid anyway on ebay. I discovered that my server has a Intel Xeon CPU 2.80GHz singel core which isn't gonna set any records soon. The socket type is 604 mPGA. In the documentation I found online this is the most advanced processor they shiped at that time but I was wondering what can I upgrade it to? Can I upgrade it to a dual core? Or maybe a quad core? And also the server is running 32 BIT windows 2008 currently. Will it be able to run 64 bit with a better processor? Also: one more question(to which I think the answer is no) is it possible to use 2 different ones if I can't find the exact same processors on Ebay? Also I have no idea how to find a second cooling block for the second processor I want to add but I think i'll may be able to figure that out. Suggestion will be nice doe. Thanks in advance and thanks for taking the time to read my question! Help will be much appreciated! (P.S. Please don't mind spelling I'm dutch :P)

I have just acquired a HP ProLiant DL140 G3. I need assistance in sourcing a cage/rack to fit it into. All i want is the cheapest, nastiest one that i can pick up without uber expense and keep the thing off the floor. Taken from page 30 of this official pdf http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04285914.pdf HxWxD 1.70 x 16.78 x 27.75 (inches) or 4.32 x 42.62 x 70.49 (cm) I do not know if it will fit all cages or if there are standards and variances. If anyone can help me source a cage for it (not looking for a 24 rack pls :p) then i would appreciate it. Budget is no problem i just do not have any experience in this area. If it helps im in the UK so ideally would like a UK supplier, would prefer not to import due to extra taxation costs and weight shipping costs. Thankyou.

Hi... I have recently got my HP Proliant ML350 G4 Server, but I need to be able to install Ubuntu Linux (Server eddition) on it as I want to be able to have the efficiency of Ubuntu. I have no idea how to get this installed on the system. I have looked through various different forums and videos but nothing I have seen talks about what I need. Is there anyone else with this server that can help me out? I really want to be able to get this server running soon as I have a lot of plans for it. Thanx! -Drew
