I, like many others, have received an email from Google Domains advising the transition to Squarespace will no longer support DDNS and to find an alternative before the transition. I'm still a bit new to self hosting stuff, so not sure what my best options are? Is it better to get a 3rd party DDNS to work on Squarespace or migrating to another domain provider that has DDNS? Currently I have my ASUS AX86U router doing the DDNS, but it only seems to support very limited DDNS providers. (image) Some of the sites I've looked up so far don't have a free tier with DDNS that I can use my existing domain on. Currently I use the DDNS to externally log into things on my network, like the router, SFTP on the NAS, Plex and other useful pages hosted from the NAS. As I said, I'm still learning all this web domain and name server stuff, so any tips/tricks for this would be appreciated. I have been looking up stuff via networkchuck and similar, but they all seem to be running things like this on Raspberry pi's or Linux servers. So I'm not sure how to translate that on the setup I currently have.

Hello everyone! First time posting on LTT, so please excuse me if I miss anything. Recently I've decided that I would like to switch my web hosting provider as I am unsatisfied with my current provider - Namecheap. I've been using them for years, but over time their services have been degrading. The latest issue that has become "the straw that broke the camel's back" has been their email reputation - It has become absolutely awful, and I can no longer send emails to hotmail / outlook emails. I've checked my DMARC / SPF records and validated they are good; It appears that the Namecheap server IP address has been flagged by at least 1 spam list. I'm looking for a hosting provider that has the following services: Shared hosting I host multiple personal websites using PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL. I would prefer SSH access to be able to upload and execute PHP code on the server. Domain Registrar Ability to define custom nameserver's - I have a few domains configured with Cloudflare E-Mail Hosting Looking for the ability to create multiple email accounts with the registered domains, and setup forwarders + catch-all's I'm OK with the idea of splitting out my email hosting from my web hosting providers if needed. I've looked into using Outlook as my email provider but, IIRC, they're now only allowing you to setup 1 email per domain and no catch-all forwarders . Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I have been using windows 7 ultimate for hosting my servers until recently long story short had to do a clean install and do to some softlocked software its no longer supported ( no matter what I tried couldn't get 7 to install framework 4.6.2 as that's what i need in order to get my software to work on it and the windows update function refuses to work in short I'm looking for an alternative that's free ( or if it has to be windows 10 a way to trim it for performance and not having it soak up a lot of the pc resources as it likes to do ) games I want to host are as listed: terraria, starbound, minecraft, savage lands, staxel, unturned, astroneer, ark, 7 days to die, killing floor and some games like cubeworld alpha not all at once but off and on not afraid to use any linux( zero experience but willing to put time into using it) just wanting one that is compatible with most of these games pc specs are cpu: xeon 5680x gpu gtx 970 oc 4gb ram: 40gb ddr3 g.skil ssd capacity about 2.5 tb and hdd 2tb motherboard asus sabertooth ii x58

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): planning on buying everything needed as new parts nothing to upgrade from. not planning for any monitors or peripherals, i will remote connect from my desktop to manage the servers. here is a current part list i came up with kinda on the fly. this is my first time doing a build from scratch any help or advice would be appreciated thanks! Hi there, this is my first post here and i was hoping maybe one of you has the time to help me with this. My mom has recently started to pursue her dream of making art and has actually started to sell some of her paintings through local connections. She has been talking about wanting a website to have more of an online presence for a while now an I want to make that happen for her. I think it would be a pretty cool Christmas gift. I am rather tech savvy but not someone who has any experience in this field whatsoever. What i am looking for is a simple website builder (yes, I know, Squarespace but i just graduated and don't have a lot of money to throw out monthly) and a way to host said website. I do have an old windows xp prebuild in my addict that still works, maybe I can host the website myself? I have spent a while trying to find something that fits but maybe some of you have some advice you can give me. I don't expect much traffic on the site for now so just having a simple online presence that looks professional would be huge. Also if someone can walk me through the setup or point me to a good tutorial that does so I would be very thankful.

If you've ever used a VPS, you know that it can be used as a webserver, but now I question; How does the dedicated server, that the VPS is hosted on, host a website on port 80 for all those VPS webservers? Because I have 1 public IP, and I can only set 1 port 80... Can anyone explain this a bit more to me? (Explain like I'm 5 if you can, I'm not that good at networking)

Hello all, I'm looking to rent out an unused server I have - preferably for game hosting - and I was looking for some guidance to get started. Specs: Internet: 150/30 Mbps CPU: Ryzen 5950x RAM: 64GB 3600Mhz SSD: 1TB OS: Planning on using Ubuntu Server

Recently I decided to build a budget PC to host a server at home for games I have been playing, as I usually end up paying a host to host a server for my friends and I. I went with lower end parts but stayed in the more consumer market as I'm not trying to dilly dally with an actual server rack. SO, here is my plan. I went with current generation parts for Intel, an example being a ASRock B560M micro ATX moba that has an LGA 1200 socket for instance. I paired it will an Intel Celeron CPU that is clocked @ 3.5GHz, 8GB of Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 RAM(running in dual channel I believe), a 120GB SSD as I am only storing the server files for a few games at a time, and finally a Corsair Fully Modular SF series 450w Gold Rated PSU. Hopefully, I will also run a no fluff linux distro to save on resources and storage space that I could use for the servers themselves being hosted. My question is what may go wrong that I didn't account for? Hosting on this scale is obviously just the tip of the iceberg but is there anything I should do even regarding IP protection that I may not know of? Should I try and run a linux server distro or just a generic linux distro like Ubunto, or should I go into my bios and underclock the CPU and RAM to save on power costs? As the servers will likely be running 24/7? I should also mention that I'm not very worried about bogging down my internet connection as it is only myself using the network mostly. I have unlimited data clocked at 1200MB/s down. I'd love to hear your thoughts! I am very open to changing up the setup(keeping these parts but changing the BIOS, network, software, and OS configurations) to maximize speeds and efficiency within warranted reason. EDIT: Build list https://newegg.io/1f755dc

Budget (including currency): €150-€200 Country: Netherlands Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Hosting a Minecraft server (I'd like it to be able to handle modpacks like Feed the Beast) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): this is something I'd like to figure out to maybe get it in the near future, but I don't really have a date to need it to be done. I am kind of new in researching parts and I've hit a roadblock, what parts would I need? I don't need support for a high refreshrate or whatever, because I am only going to use it for hosting the server on and nothing else. That's why I'd like it to not be very expensive but I don't know what is needed for this build in specific. Thanks!

First of all if I'm posting in the wrong Threads, please guide me as I couldn't find another for hosting advice. I'm trying to start a blog, I've looked at shared and VPS hosting providers, but as I'm a student I have access to AWS free tier as well as Google Cloud. I thinking of saving some money and using them to host my blog. I know I can install WordPress directly, but I would much prefer having a hosting like panel to manage and monitor things, install SSL, create emails for the domain, have a phpMyAdmin or similar a filemanager, etc. I read quite a bit on this and found out that I can use CyberPanel with OpenLiteSpeed Cache or Ajenti for doing it. I also looked at plesk obsidian(free web min version). But I don't really have any first hand experience with these and I have a few questions. 1. Will the panel I choose affect the speed of the website. Is cyberpanel better than ajenti or plesk because it offers OLS? 2. Will the distro I choose (ubuntu/centOS ) have an impact on the speed. 3. are these my only options or is there any better/faster panel that I can/should use? 4. which one of these 3 would you suggest keeping in mind that although I'm a total beginner I'm ready to learn if needed?

So today I'm asking a very important question, and we are simply throwing out the moral question of should we? The simple question but yet as old as time itself, should we, could we, and why shouldn't we? host a Minecraft server java edition from two of these phones they already meet the minimum system requirements and exceed them, it also runs a Linux base (Android), and has 512GB of storage per phone, with 16gb of ram at 3.1Ghz. What is holding us back? time? money? Please let me hear your thoughts

Hi ! I've recently seen the LTT gaming pc at 69$ using xeon. I want to build myself a server for modded minecraft, ark, conan, vrising and different game. Would using Xeon more efficient than using for example a Intel Core i3-12100F wich is kinda cheap for it's performance ? Possibly having 1-3 server hosting at the same time. Also, would i be able to use the xeon on gaming vs the Intel Core i3-12100F ?

Guys! I need some advice, Im looking into building a system to host a Minecraft server. I looked online and everything I found was contradictory, so I’m asking the most knowledgeable forum for help. Here are my basic criteria for the server itself: -I’m looking at a 50+ player server -It will have plugins (~ 30-40) -It will have up to 4 different server connected by bungeecord -I want it to run smoothly (duh!) First of all, what kind of CPU do I need to host a Minecraft server? How many cores and threads? Does it need to be a server CPU or you can use a normal desktop CPU? AMD or Intel? Secondly, how much RAM do I need? What latency? What speed? Do I need a special type of RAM? Thirdly, do I need a graphics card? If yes, what kind? Number four, SSD or HDD? Both? One for backups and one that runs the server? If SSD, NVMe or SATA? (Not sure that’s what they’re called) Lastly, should I water cool it or put it in a low temp. room? Will normal air cooling do the job? If someone has built one in the past or know what kind of components I should use, feel free to give my propositions! My system criteria are: -Budget of ~200 to 250$ CAD (Maybe lower, if possible or maybe I’m completely of track with the budget) -Upgradeable down the line -Smallest form factor possible -Runs Win. 10 Thank you all for your time, Stay home, Wash your hands! -Philipp

Where I host a server instead of people connecting to my server with my public ip, instead I would want to have people connect to it with a domain name. But the thing is that, websites have offers for you to pay to have them host a domain name for you. But what I want to know is how do these company's host their own domain names on their own?

Heya, Ive been wondering, a couple of buddy's of mine have been hosting a minecraft server But over here the lag is awful. I was wondering if it would be possible if I put the server on my server over here, is there a plugin that would link the two servers so the same updates happen on both servers? If not, would there be a way for me to program it, i have thought about it a little but idk what information can get sent between servers. thx, Coolxm

Hello! I'd like to use a laptop to access my home computer for gaming. I have seen a few options and I don't really know which would work best for latency, quality, etc. I haven't picked up a laptop yet but have been looking at my local area and will likely pick up an older gen i5 with 8gb GB of ddr3 RAM. Do you guys think this is even a good idea or should I forego the whole thing and find another method? Thank you for your time and constructive ideas

I host dedicated servers for me and my friends to play on, I am hosting on a separate computer which is dedicated to just hosting servers. When I host my servers, I have noticed that if I have the laptop (server computer) using an Ethernet cable for the internet connection, instead of using wifi to host the server. Nobody is able to connect to it except me. But when I use wifi to host it everyone can connect fine. I have also tried changing my port forwards when doing this since using wifi vs ethernet seem to have different IPV4 addresses. But I am not able to figure out why nobody can connect to it when I use an Ethernet cable. I would very much prefer too host it that way for a more stable connection and less fluctuation, but I am drawing a blank. Does anybody have some possible solutions?

Hey guys, I'm trying to sell unused server space similar Digital Ocean or Vultr. I have gotten as far to setup SolusVM setup and am planning to setup WHMCS. Is there any way I would be able to provide each vps with their own public ip? If not then can I use one IP and provide my clients with a sub.sub.domain (virtual-server.host-server.domain.ca) I my current ISP is Rogers residential but have access to Bell business Thank you, James

https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2020/05/28000-godaddy-hosting-accounts-compromised/ https://www.techrepublic.com/article/godaddy-data-breach-shows-why-businesses-need-to-better-secure-their-customer-data/ This is hosting accounts of theirs. So, DNS users get a pass this time 'round. While they haven't said it is related, this could be additional persistent threat fallout from the March GoDaddy employee phishing breach. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2020/03/phish-of-godaddy-employee-jeopardized-escrow-com-among-others/ In short, if you use GoDaddy for anything, especially hosting at this time, you should go change your ssh keys and set up 2 factor auth if you're able. Also, check the history of files and minor edits in your sites (particularly if you're using any of the popular CMSs), as this is notification NOW of a breach that appears to have occurred last October.

I've recently wanted to start a website and I've been looking at web hosting. I'm new to this side of tech. So I pretty much have no clue what I should or should get. Theres a ton of options out there about web hosting. I have a few questions that I hope some of you may be able to answer or to help steer me in the right direction. 1. Pro's and con's of either getting a normal server that hosts my website or getting a virtual private server for it. Can you use a vps to host a website? Any major differences? 2. Recommendations on where I could look for hosting? Trying to get the best bang for my buck and honestly dont know how much traffic will end up on the website. 3. When server hosting company's write Unlimited traffic, whats the "catch" that they impose? Or do some not have any tricks up their sleeves? 4. How much do the specs of the server matter? I know that how clean and efficient your code can greatly impact the performance. But any way to actually know how well it could run? Would there a way for me to vm test it or something? 5. Are there any other options that I might be missing for web hosting?

Updating content of a Wordpress based website after hosting?
Shammikit posted a topic in Programming
Hello, and yes this is probably a noob question. This is the first time I'm building and going to host a website. So far I have installed Wordpress on my PC, hosted the site locally using Apache Web server and been doing the building of the site. What I'm building is a static web site with no logins, that will display a Catalog of products. I have been using woocommerce plugin to enter these products to the website and it then hit me, "how am I going to update/enter new products to my catalog after hosting this website?". If you use Bluehost for example, do u get the wordpress dashboard there when u login to bluehost so that u can make updates to the website? I did some googling and I didnt understand much on what they explain. I saw that when u host a website using bluehost, u get to integrate wordpress with it. Does that mean I get to sync the website related files from my pc with the ones at bluehost? so that when I made a change locally, it will be available at bluehost. I watched a few Youtube videos and what they integrate is a wordpress.com website. Im guessing as wordpress.com built websites are already online at wordpress, it can be updated through wordpress.com as well. If someone could explain the process to me (from the basics if u have the time) it would be very helpful to understand. Thank you.- 4 replies
