I'm trying to figure out a way to transfer files/folders from one computer to another (both running Windows 10) over wifi on the same network. I figured HomeGroup was something like that so I created a homegroup on my desktop. I went over to my laptop to try and join it but it says "There is currently no homegroup on the network". Both computers are on the same network, same 5GHz. Both have network discovery turned on, automatic setup of network connected devices checked, file and printer sharing on, and I've enabled Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections. Why can't my laptop find a homegroup? Is homegroup even something I should be looking at to transfer files using wifi?

I apologize in advance for anything extremely dense that I ask, for I am very inexperienced in networking. I just recently built my new home server/NAS (specs at the bottom of my sig) and I want to get started actually using it as a NAS. However for multiple reasons I have to run Windows on it so I'm looking for the best way to share files/folders on the server between that and my main PC. It seemed for a bit like setting up a homegroup was the best solution since they are both Windows 10 PCs, but the problem is I need to keep the NAS secured from others on the network, either by making it only visible to my PC or putting a password on access to its shared files, which it doesn't seem like a homegroup can do either of after some brief research. So what would be a good solution for me?

After setting up Plex on my home server, I've noticed that it shows up under network locations, and all of the files are fully accessible through there, which I'd rather not have be the case. I've snooped around a bit in the settings, but I can't find a way to disable this. Does anyone know how?

So I've been on a bit of a PC chore list lately. One of those things is to get the home network sharing working again. I had set up the original homegroup on a PC install that no longer exists, and all the other PCs no longer are connect to it and the password is not accessible anymore. Some googling told me to get on every windows PC in the network, and leave the homegroup so I can create a new one. There is one PC I cant access because my brother is at work, so I have unplugged it from the wall. But the rest of them (3 laptops and 2 desktops) are no longer joined to the homegroup but I cant seem to be able to create a new group, and the passwords I scavenged before leaving the homegroups (2 of them) arent the correct password so I am stuck unable to create a new group. Has anyone got any tips to troubleshoot further? Im at a loss at to what to do.

Hey all, So my brothers just got new PC's, now before I start - I DO NOT want to monitor them, however teamviewer will be installed for remote support. They're 11 & 9, they're sensible but we just want to make sure everything is okay with their PC's and that they aren't accessing anything bad. So, I'm going to make a homegroup and have us all connected to it. Is there a way to see their internet traffic and to enforce a security policy so that they can't get to certain websites, open certain file extensions etc? I know it can be done on a server, but I don't have a server as of yet, so instead I would like to know of a way to enforce it via homegroup or another method. Thanks in advance, Jack

All, I have admitted defeat. My google skills have failed me. I have a really simple task of sharing folders and files between two Windows 10 computers via an unmanaged network switch. However, one of the computers is running "Windows 10 Pro for Workstations build 1803" the other computer is running Vanilla Windows 10 Pro. The problems is the computer with "Workstation" can only see a couple of computers on the network and it is unable to connect to any of the computers that have shared a folder. I have tried setting services to automatic like SSDP Discovery, UPnP Device Host, and Function Discovery Services. I also have SMB 1.0 CIFS File Sharing Support. I went through this guide, yet I obviously have the same problem. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-networking/connecting-pcs-and-users-for-sharing/fb92e439-5dbc-4367-9857-1ef360e9ffdf Anyone one else run into something like this? Thank you,

Hey guys. I recently started a small company based on digital content development. We currently have 7 workstations. running on windows 10 pro (updated to the latest versions). I want to connect each computer to a small homegroup. so we can share files with each computer. but for some reason I cant seem to setup one a homegroup. Did Microsoft remove that feature ? If not Please tell me how to properly setup one. If yes, what are the alternative ways to setup a homegroup? Thanks alot

Where to start, The new update is bricking some computers and pretty much rotting everyone's home and small business networks. Mine included!! The update is removing homegroup (an easy way to set up file sharing and networks) among some other changes that can be seen here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/planning/windows-10-1803-removed-features Although i din't use homegroup i was rendered incapable of being able to access and share my drives and files from PC to PC. The update made all of my PCs undiscoverable in the network tab in file explorer and even when i found a way to fix that, i was unable to gain access to said PCs, folders, and drives (even from the computer the files are stored on) through the network window. I am unable to map to them, the options in the network and sharing center seem to be just rhetorical now, and after individually going to drives, folders, files and changing sharing settings to full access for "everyone", and doing the same in network ad sharing center I am still unable to access my files from the network. Microsoft is trying to push the use of their cloud service through this update. The update has bricked a number of computers https://www.windowslatest.com/2018/05/24/windows-10-april-2018-update-bricks-pcs-and-microsoft-shares-workaround/ Microsoft has said " Instead of using HomeGroup, you can now share printers, files and folders by using features that are built into Windows 10" but this simply isn't true until i can find a fix that doesn't mean using the cloud or email.. yeah email is one of their other options. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027674/windows-10-share-files-in-file-explorer https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4092694/windows-10-changes-to-file-sharing-over-a-network The above links say that shared folders will still remain shared but that simply isn't true.. My entire computers were rendered not discoverable and the update changed all of my sharing settings, then on top of that made it impossible for me to restore my sharing capability even though i hadn't been using homegroup. i found some helpful links that guieded me through getting the PC to show up in network again, but still can't access shared folders and files even from the same PC. I have posted to a microsoft hosted forum asking for help and will update on fixes if i get any. forum post to follow Hello, I recently updated my home PCs with the 1803 windows update and am unable to access previously shared files and folders from computer to computer. I was not using a "homegroup" there was no need to use one, but after the update my settings in the network and sharing center seem to be there for no reason at all. I have tried mapping to each computer and the shared folders. I have tried resetting the networks, renaming the PCs and folders, and workgroups, changing the sharing settings, and have exhausted every option i could think to gain access to my folders from other computers. even when i map to a shared folder or drive i get the error code 0x80070035 and after troubleshooting, the problem found states "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection". How can microsoft just break every home and small business network? People aren't going to use the cloud service. Sharing folders and homegroups aren't outdated, Microsoft's tactics are.... i am very frustrated with this. I feel that i am fairly computer savvy but i am admittedly at a loss for solutions to this network bricking update. PLEASE HELP! I shouldn't be forced to upload my terabytes of data and files to a cloud service so i can access them from computer to computer. trying to work with HDR video that way is a nightmare!!! In the meantime i am asking for help here...

Hello people of the internet! I am trying to test the difference between wireless and Ethernet Homegroup transfer speeds in an attempt to convince my parental unit to allow me to run cat6 through our wall. (My desktop is directly above my router on the next level & there are already holes in the wall for coax & phone line.) Due to obviously not being able to compare the speeds using my desktop, I am using laptops with crystaldiskmark6 to test the speed of the homegroup. The laptops have not been cooperating and I shall go through the steps I have followed here: Tested the wireless transfer speed with newer craptop that has a decent network card sitting ~ a meter below router and received this result: Honestly not too shabby but Ethernet should still be faster. I went on to test Ethernet performance with the laptop and found out it only supports 100Mb/s. How is that even possible, the 10 year old desktop that is the center for the Homegroup even has Gb Ethernet. Pulled out older laptop that does support Gb Ethernet and plugged it into the router to find that it is detecting the wrong SSID; preventing me from connecting to the Homegroup. (It does allow me to connect to the Homegroup using wireless because it detects the correct SSID.) Instead it seems to be using the default SSID of my router. - Should not be NETGEAR05 Any help is greatly appreciated! Also, if there are any flaws in my testing methods please mention them.

The problem is my Wireless internet connectivity keeps randomly dropping and staying disconnected with both my pc and my wife's whenever we are joined to a Windows Homegroup " locally." We're stuck living in a hotel, ( long story). When the homegroup doesn't exist ( aka the physical ethernet ports on both machines are disabled), internet runs like a champ. I've ensured when created the Homegroup we're not going through the Public hotel's wireless internet. We'll say my PC is PC 1, and wife's is PC 2. Both PC's use the same model of wireless usb ethernet card ( netgear a6100) and both use the same speed and length of usb extension cord to maximize signal strength. The only problem is being able to have wireless internet AND being connected to a Windows Homegroup to share files at the same time. Connecting the wireless cards straight to each PC's usb ports matters not. I've confirmed that. Both PC's have the same version of Windows 10 and 1 year old hardware. Everything else works like a champ. Also the problem remains regardless of which PC that creates the Homegroup and regardless of reboots. The following things have already been done: 1. Ensured the physical ethernet ports are set to static ip address and ensured the correct DNS and DEFAULT GATEWAY are both set correctly and the same on both machines. I would double check these network settings have not changed on both PC's even after the wireless internet stops working through "Ipconfig /all", and yes I have tried flushing dns, ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew for kicks. Same problem is still there. 2. Ensured each PC can 100% successfully PING each other. 3. Successfully creating from either PC the Homegroup and joining it from the other is always easy and works every time. The Homegroup never disconnects. 4. Ensured in group policy settings " gpedit.msc" that the physical ethernet lan connection on both machines by default always is set to " Private" as Homegroup's instructions require this. Also ensure the Wireless ethernet's connections on both machiens are always set by default to " Public" as required. Finally ensured that both machine's have it enabled to " never allow the User to change the Network Location " to or from Public and Private to ensure wireless remains Public and physical ethernet remains Private through those Group Policy settings. 5. The Home group functions the same, perfectly, regardless if I use a simple crossover ethernet cable from PC1 to PC2 OR connection through our netgear Nighthaw 7500v2 router through cat 6 ethernet, but the same problem with the wireless internet randomly failing and STAYING in the failing state ( although when left clicking on the Wireless symbol on the taskbar, it still shows all the normal wireless connections we can connect to with the main one still connected with internet. 6. Ensured the Wireless adapter's networking information on both PC's( including ip address) is still the same within reason ( obviously I have no control over it being DHCP since it's hotel wifi-based) with it being a normal Class C private address ( beginning with 192.168 as 99% of them normally do. and valid. Something in my gut tells me this is a simple problem to fix and there is something simple I am missing, but I can't for the life of me figure it out. Please help?

Greetings. I hope you'll forgive me if this question proves idiotic, but my paranoia pushed me to ask. Between the last time I used my computer and today, a program called 'Homegroup' has popped up on my desktop. Is this a common, automated occurrence with Windows, or is it possible that someone had access to my computer? Note that it isn't password-protected and I share my living quarters with other people who use computers. Either way, I would like to know if I can check how that program got to my desktop, and whether it could have been a clumsy error on my part or an automated feature of Windows. Regards, Aereldor.

So i have two PCs and i used to have them connected by homegroup, and over the past couple of months i have had extreme difficulty with it to the point where i have just disconnected them completely, but i have decided to try again but it keeps coming up with join a homegroup not create. I KNOW there are no other homegroups on this network, and my other pc is coming up with the same message. My parents pc though doesn't have that problem there is a create a homegroup button available. The picture below is what is comes up with when i try to join. I did have a bit of trouble with a vpn at one point by leaving it on when trying to join to homegroup, it didn't like that, and i accidentally kept signing in with that email when downloading from the windows store, and i remember it starting during that point somewhere. Also i have already tried reinstalling windows 10 on my main pc. Please help i am really getting tired of this shit homegroup, btw i am not even going to be using it again just got some ocd :(:

Hey first time I have used Homegroup and it doesn't work...:( I have 2 PC's a TV and a Laptop that I would like to have connect. I set up Homegroup on my main computer and from what I can tell its working, I then tried joining the homegroup from the 2nd PC but on the Homegroup section there is no option to join stil says "There is currently no homegroup on your network". and the only option is to create one. My tv though (Samsung JS8500) does pick it up and I can join (without putting in a password) but it only shows the Pictures, Music, Videos folders for some reason. I havn't bothered trying the laptop yet The 2 PC's are running Windows 10 and both of them as well as the TV are connected by ethernet cabel to the same router Or is there another option that I can use other than Homegoup so I can access files from my other devices. Thanks Tando~

Hi I have been running into this "Windows no longer detects a Home Group on the network" error every time I tried to connect to one. There are 3 computers on the network, they were all connected to a old Home Group before I wiped everything and installed Windows 10. I believe the issues was that my computer thinks the old homegroup still exist and refuses to let me create another. When in the homegroup menu, it said "User on PC has created a homegroup", but that PC is wiped. It then prompt me to type the password, no matter what Itype it always says "Windows no longer detects a Home Group on the network" Please help.

I having trouble transferring files between my two systems, I've enabled full control on all the drives on both PC's but I'm unable to transfer data from my main rig to my secondary rig. Any help would be appreciated and I would love for those who can help to jump onto the Unofficial LTT Teamspeak as that would be easier. This is the crap I get when I try to transfer something from my main rig to my secondary rig These are the settings that I've enabled on all of the drives(2TB HDD, 320GB HDD, 250GB HDD) I'm able to move things from my secondary rig to my main one but not the other way around. Here is my offering to Lord Gaben

Is there any software where I can control the desktop from one computer using another that uses the home network. I have Home Premium so I can't use Window's remote desktop. There is software but all I see is that it lags when moving things, etc. Isn't there something where there would be no lag and I can copy files from one computer to another? Something that isn't a trial version. I have already tried TeamViewer.

I checked all the computers and non of them are joined to homegroup. I hope you understand what i am trying to explain here because my english isnt very good!! Thanks !!
