Hi, I`m a little confused about VR gaming, so I`ve got a few questions. VR headsets (like Vive,Oculus) are just screens with hdmi input (like second screens) and a usb interface for the sensors? Cause, if that`s all, with an ebay 6" display and an android phone with TrinusVR program installed on, I can do the same thing? I mean use the second screen as the output for the game, and for the sensors use the TrinusVR input from the phone? Because Trinus works with an usb cable, so it is possible than to stream the displayed window to an another screen. Can somebody explain how these things work, I would really appriciate it, thanks

My Story: I recently started earning some money this opens up a lot of new perspectives for an otherwise rather poor student. I had tried the Oculus twice at Gamescom 2016 - both times in sitting position - and was utterly unimpressed with what I saw. This and the price were reasons why VR wasn't very interesting to me until recently. I saw a review of the Pimax 4K and tried and HTC Vive at a local store - this time in a standing position - and "oh boy!" that was so much better. I thought: The Pimax could be it, my perfect cheap entrance to VR. Luckily I even found one on ebay for 260€ from a guy who got a Vive for christmas so he never opened or let alone used his Pimax. I went ahead and bought it. It was and is still interesting but I keep running into limitations. It is either the missing appropriate tracking (Pimax only has 3 axis tracking) or some other technical quirks of the glasses I don't want to get into right here. In conclusion I got a first look at VR on the cheap. Currently I am trying to sell the Pimax again and considering either getting a Vive or a Rift but i am not sure. I also had another taste of the Oculus Rift - this time standing - and it didn't feel worse than the Vive though there were mutliple weeks between trying both (adda grain of salt here). Since I now have the cash but not the knowledge I need to make a conscious buying decision I came here to ask you some things and compile what i found out so far. There are some pros and cons and I don't feel like luke has said enough in his month old "final answer". Do you personally have experience with both or any of these and can help me with this? Please leave a suggestion! (Notes: I have -1 on each - myopic that is - on each eye so without glasses is usually fine but I'd prefere to fit them in there I'd generally prefere not to support Facebook since i do not agree with a lot of things they do. I might be able to completely overlook that though if someone comes up with the ultimate feature of the rift I forgot I also don't like the exclusivity since it locks people out of games in an already small industry rough measuring I have couch to desk 2 meters and wall to the middel of the room 2.5m-3 meters of space (3770k @4.6GHz and a GTX 1080 should be enough power) So far I know (open question are marked in bolt - Feel free to add some to these if I forgot about something): Oculus: Way cheaper at 499€ from amazon + 119€ for the Touch controllers for a total of 620€ Shorter, thinner cable smaller FoV looking through a porthole feeling. On first impression text can be read easily, more easily that with Vive (subjective feel) lighter headset Removable headphones but not advised since stock sound is pretty good though I Comes with an X-BOne Controller Touch controllers are more ergonomic and pick up gestures better Controllers take AA batteries not yet sure if that is a good or a bad thing (claimed 30 hour battery life) Cams are "only" 69€ which i consider an ok price lighter controllers 4m long headset cable. Seems just long enough for my purposes Needs 4 USB ports, 3 of which have to be 3.0 ... srsly? 2.5m Cable for the cams - more bad than good. I am also missing unoccupied USB Ports: Should i get an PCIe extension for some more? Seems to have a lot more (partly exclusive) games than Vive (help please) I have no idea how good or bad the tracking really is when used in room scale mode Comes with a Remote o_O wth is that for? What games does it come with? The 6 listed on the Oculus website? (here:https://www.oculus.com/rift/) Robo Recall is included with the Touch controllers It Seems harder to clean than the Vive- specifically the headset's pad. Is that correct? How has your experience with their store and software been so far? Vive: starts at 899€ Controllers have proprietary batteries which are at 960mAh not even that large bulky 5m tri-cable solution (There is a separat 3to1to3 cable solution which costs 45€ or is that included nowadays?) uses only one USB 2.0 port heavier headset Higher FoV but also more screen door effect, harder to read text. More immersed feel (my subjective feeling) no included headphones, headphone strap available soon Additional lighthouse sensor is 150€ Additional controllers can be purchased but are 145€ has the cat cam though I don't have any livestock in house that I could step on, lul comes with 5 meh games as far as I can tell. (Subjectively I consider job simulator-like only meh) comes with in ear headphones though I will probably not use them since I have DT880s or Hifiman Re400s On steam are considerably more games listed that support the Vive though that doesn't say anything about a singular game's quality heavier controllers Are the Vive trackers (coming soon) any interesting for a consumer like me? How has your experience with their store and software been so far? I will probably have to add points later on but this is what is on my mind for now. The dilema basically is that I liked the roomscale-ness of the Vive but don't actually have that much room and the Oculus is 270€ (maybe 200 with a third camera subtractred) cheaper than the Vive but I think contrary to to so many things Oculus and Facebook stand for in the industry AND to add insult to the injury the Touch controllers really are better than the Vive Controllers. ive tried reinstalling the wmr software multiple times and using other pc's and yet the same issue occurs. ive looked all over youtube and yet seen nothing in order to fix this i feel as though it might be something within the hmd like a screw loose or something of the sort that turns off the display i dont know! So i heard that oculus quest would be able to connect to pc with USB Type C and a software (or whatever it is) named Oculus Link. I heard some games are really downgraded between the PC version and the Quest version like robo recall. Would i be able to play it with better graphics quality if it's connected to pc via Oculus Link?

There has been a rise of reports of people having some serious issues with the screen quality of their Nokia flagship devices. Most reports refer to "half dead screen" issues on the Nokia 8 as little as days after the initial boot and yellow tinting on the screen on the Nokia 7 plus. My story is that i had to rma my Nokia 8 handset twice, first because of dead pixels out of the box, was quick enough thanks to the doa policy of my supplier and then after a couple months i had to warranty replace the logic board due to wifi and data not working at all and device getting super hot on my hand. Also many reports state that Nokia screens become unresponsive or register wrong inputs when the phone is pluged or layed flat. For proof and only of the dozens of issues reports i post bellow the according Nokia support forum and pictures of discord chats of the Nokia community. Most of the reported issues have to do with hardware problems such as, failing LCD flex cable connectors, failing motherboards, bad screen quality, uncured and rushed screen adhesive, bad headphone jacks and the list about hardware problems goes on without having to mention software issues that can be fixed. I think that awareness should be raised, because we are talking about expensive devices that come with the flagship sticker on them (nokia 8) and/or expensive midrange devices such as Nokia 7 plus, that try to exploit the former Nokia durability stamp of approval, but seem to lack the consistency of good and stable quality through user usage. Those issues should gain publicity and force HMD Global to take action and further investigate their QC problems. I am interested in getting into vr and the Windows MR headsets are very cheap on Amazon and wondering if I should buy 1 for a person who is getting into VR. Also, if my pc can run it. If you want any benchmarks or specs, ask me and I will reply.

Hello, So the question is, aside from the Rift or Vive. Is there a HMD that I can buy today to replace or act as a second monitor for PC? I don't care about head tracking (thou it would be nice) or other things. I just want to be able to plug it into my PC and get a large virtual desktop/gaming screen that my GPU in my PC does all the heavy lifting. Oh and not costing an arm or a leg is good to.

Post at /. To summarize: HMD's (Head Mounted Displays) distort images due to the wide angles needed for your eyes to see the entire picture. This is fixed with software, but causes the image quality, and specifically, the sharpness to suffer. Researcher's at Intel have found a way around this by using a different sampling method for rendering which will potentially increase all HMD's picture quality that have a wide field of view (FOV). However... A comment on this post at Slashdot caught my attention, and here it is: That's interesting to me because the only problems I have ever heard of regarding multi-monitor gaming are the bezels, the price tag, and the high performance GPU requirement. Never have I heard about distortion issues, though it makes a lot of sense. 3 flat panels trying to show you a curved view sounds like it wouldn't work too well. What is your take on this? If you use multiple monitors to game, do you notice any lack of sharpness or distortion (depending on if the software solutions are being used)? I think this is great. I'm sure that even though each screen in the Oculus Rift is 640x480 (or wtv it was), it was hurt even more by these software solutions. More clarity = good.

I wouldn't have much input regarding it until I've tried at least one HMD (like the Rift), but I haven't. For those who have used the Rift, what do you think having 210 degrees of view means for an HMD? @LinusTech @Slick You guys have tried it. I'm just not sure what to make of this. Does the Oculus Rift make use of your peripheral vision? If not, and there are just black spaces there, then I can see how this would make a noticeable difference. To where you literally don't feel like you are wearing an HMD (aside from weight and such, but specifically regarding the view you have). That could be cool.
