  1. Hello all, I've been a PC gamer for little over 12 years now, always on a budget since where I live the price of electronics are absurdly high and I never wanted to burden my parents with expensive stuff. So my PC never had any RGBs or any really expensive parts, only the necessary. That includes SSDs, recently I had the opportunity to get a used SSD in exchange for an LCD monitor I had laying around my house for two years (unused since I got it, basically brand new). The SSD was 100% healthy according to CrystalDiskInfo, it's a SanDisk PLUS 120Gb (dram-less, but I don't think it's such a big issue coming from HDDland), and had little over 2TB TBW(?) out of 40TB. So I get to my house after exchanging it and it shows as "removable disk" when Windows boots. Tried formatting and still not showing as a usable disk, I'm basically going to use this guy as a boot drive for my laptop, so I won't be writing a lot of stuff to it. I'm going to buy another one for my PC later on, but it needs to be bigger since I'll use it to play games. I got all my parts used a couple of years back, so I know the risks of used stuff, my PC has an i5 2500K, 12Gb DDR3 and a GTX970. It still kicks ass in 1080p and that's enough for me. I've never had any real issues with used parts, my laptop and phone are also used goods, my laptop was the most recent purchase and it was real cheap compared to others with same specs. So I just want to upgrade it with an SSD for bigger convenience. I'll have the SSD as boot and a 500Gb HDD for storage (this one is even 7200 RPM, which was a surprise for me, all my other laptops had 5400 RPM HDDs). Ops, forgot the punchline. Has anyone had this issue before? I tested the SSD on the guy's PC and it worked fine then. But now my Windows recognizes it as a 111Gb drive but simply can't use it. Maybe it's because my hardware is older? Or maybe not because I tested it on my newer laptop and still not working. Edit 1: Ok so I'm not sure WTF is going on. I even checked the PCB for any physical damage, and nothing, it looks brand new. When I run Disk Management it showed the ssd with three healthy partitions and one of them being RAW (I couldn't do anything with these partitions) I tried to format them via Gparted, Diskpart and Disk Management Tool; none had any success. I was trying to download SanDisk Dashboard but was not successful until I found an older version and managed to install it and update to the most recent. When this happened It scanned and showed the SSD with 98% health and the partitions that DskMgmt showed before... I managed to clean it with the "Sanitize" option, it now shows 111Gb unallocated, but nothing can be done with the drive. I can't create partitions or format it to NTFS via DiskPart or anything. Gparted gives me "fsyncing/closing /dev/sdc input/output error" when I try to create a GPT partition table or format the partitions that were there and DiskPart gives me "Cyclic Redundancy Check". A few moments ago I rebooted and the Dashboard App shows the ATA security as "Frozen". Is there any way for me to maybe flash an older firmware or the same firmware to make sure it's not a firmware problem? As follows, these first screenshots were taken before I managed to sanitize and erase the disks partitions: The three partitions on DskMgmt Diskpart showing all partitions and the main RAW part. Now after sanitizing: Dashboard showing it as 98% healthy, without any partitions and "Frozen" ATA security. CrystalDiskInfo stats, I had forgotten to upload the first screenshot, so I took another one after sanitizing. If anyone has any idea as to what to do with this little guy... I saw 4 chips on the PCB (2 on each side) and one SanDisk controller, I also saw some contact pads, maybe there's a way to manually "reset" the controller or something. I'm no electronics expert and as my experience with SSDs have been null and void so far, I'm not sure if this is a possibility, like the little pads in smartphones that you can use to enter a recovery mode or something of the sort... Anyways, kudos to whoever helps me out on this! I'll keep on digging by myself here. But there's a limited amount of info you can find with a limited amount of knowledge on something. Edit2: Ok so I came to a conclusion. This SSD has been bricked so hard that all of his blocks are bad. I'm running a Erase Test on HDDScan and it's reporting bad blocks since the first one and it's been over 25k of bad blocks. I'll finish the test but I'm not really sure if it'll turn up anything different. Anyhow, I contacted some local stores about SSDs and I'll be getting a 480Gb Kingston for an affordable price. But I still need to save up 3x what I have now.
  2. Hi. This is kind an old topic/question but after search on web about it i found a little confusing and some how dispersed answers. So i ask here for some expertise. I have a 3905x cpu under a x570 board Aorus Master. This is a 24 pci lanes cpu. I got: 1x Nvme SSD 500GB pci 3.0 - primary disk. 1x HDD Sata 3.5" 6TB - secondary disk (files and library) 1x HDD Sata 2.5" 1TB - third disk (games installed) I need to now what is the limit i can reach on pci lanes before losing any kind of performance bandwith. And if i can get another Nvme SSD 1TB to change or keep the HDD 2.5" i got. Cheers.
  3. Currently, I have 2 Seagate 3TB HDDs that I got back in 2015 and I want to upgrade them. I'm mainly going to use them for games and game launchers. What dries would you guys suggest I get? Also, should I invest in an Intel optane drive?
  4. Ok I recently upgraded the Graphics card of my PC from a GTX 1050ti to a RTX 2070 super. On the initial upgrade everything ran fine, but I ran into a bit of hang up. I was left with only one HDMI port on the graphics card, so I decided to install the GTX back in to act as 2nd hdmi port for my 2nd monitor. Now, I keep getting the "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key" message. I've triple checked all of my connections, went into the BIOS to see if the SSDs and HDD are being read (and they are...) but I still can't get it to boot! Can someone please help me?! TUF Gaming B450+ Motherboard AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Windows 10 Pro Corsair DDR4 16GB RAM x2 8 GB cards RTX 2070 Super SSD 480GB SSD 128 SSD 2TB HDD
  5. Basicly the title, My primary drive PCB cought on fire and I would like to try to recover the data for as cheap as possible. I was informed by reddit that simply replacing the PCB with one from an identical drive won't work. Any ideas on how I can recover my data or am I better off just starting over. HDD specs: Seagate Barracuda 160gb 7200.12 (st3160318AS)
  6. Now that I have seemed to have found the right Forum page About a month ago I decided to install COD Warzone, and things were going great, my system ran it fine, no frame issues, lagging or anything at all until an update came out for the game and then I seemingly couldn't run it for longer than 15-20 minutes without it crashing. I tried a couple things, changing setting to favor preformance in GeForce Experience, trying to adjust different settings in GeForce Experience, sover clocking my GPU, in which nothing really prevailed, and I believe its all due to my hard drive, after all I would run my task manager while playing Warzone and everytime it crashed my Disk usage was at 100%, meanwhile my GPU, CPU and Memory was only barely being halfway used, sometimes not even close to 50%. I just ended up giving up on the game and figured I'd play it on console, no biggy. The issue is that after I uninstalled I seemed to have massive framedropping issues in every game that I would play. In games like Rust, Minecraft and Destiny, I would get unbearable frame drops (especially in destiny 2, it would piss me off to an extreme lol), in which I would be playing and every 3-20 seconds I would just be getting horrible frame drop from 60 FPS down to the 20s or even 10s, and I would just give up playing games because I couldn't enjoy playing them because my frames would just take a shit every few seconds. Here is where I am at a loss, I tried multiple things and I have seen no return to how my system use to run, efficient with no frame drops what so ever. I tried multiple things to see if it would fix the issue, Defragging my Hard Drive, scanning it for bad sectors, enabling write caching and just deleting large files that I dont use anymore. I come here in hopes that someone can help resolve the issue, I am really a Novice when it comes to any computer fixing or troubling shooting or anything like that (as you can probably tell in reading all of this) I mean I built my own PC but in all honesty I am not the most technology advanced person. so like I said I am just reaching out in hopes that someone who knows way more than me can help. I am sure including the parts to my build may help some people understand what the issue is better, or maybe not at all, but reguardless I will include them Motheboard: MSI X270 Gaming Pro Carbon CPU- i-7 7700K Memory- 2 of Trident G.Skill 8 GB GPU- EVGA GeForce 1060 3GB SC Gaming Storage- Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB I think its clear that out of all the parts I decided to cheap out on storage and got a HDD because I thought getting alot of cheap storage would be better than getting a little of fast storage, and I think that is defiently a lesson I have learned this path month. In the future I do plan on getting a SSD to add onto my build for obvious reasons, but for now I am stuck and hoping someone can help, thanks!
  7. I took apart an old TV bow with an HDD in it and I want to access it but I don't know how to connect it. You can go to the reddit post here where there is pics, model numbers and the cords. I'm pretty new to all this so tell me if I'm stoopid or something. My main goal is to get the HDD to transfer data through a USB 3.0 so I can store pictures on it. The HDD was now heavily used so I'm not too worried about data loss. Also I'd like to see if I could see the movie we recorded onto it.
  8. Hi Everyone, I don't know if this is exactly the form I should be posting in, if not please let me know. Anyways I'm back with my second post, well I guess second question haha I was diving into mass storage the other day, and I came across the ability to mount one storage device, lets say a 1TB 7200rpm HDD, as a folder onto a separate device, lets say a 250GB NVMe SSD. Obviously you can and would use this for organization, but I got wondering whether there would be any other benefits to using this method. I don't believe I fully understand how this works, but here is my question. Would mounting said magnetic HDD, that is slower, as a folder on said SSD, which is faster, in turn make the HDD move files faster? My idea hear was that if the SSD is pulling from the HDD that first pull of information would obviously be at the speed of the HDD, but say you pull a program off the HDD and the program is now in use, would the program now be running off the SSD or would it still be running off the HDD just through the SSD? I hope this makes sense, I'm not the best at keeping my thoughts in order.... Hope everyone is staying safe out there in these very different times! Forbes
  9. Ok. first off hi. second back again with another fault. I have got hold of some 3.5 sata drives from some old low latency servers which were fucked. miraculously they all still work. problem is i have 10 of them and not enough space in the pc. they are between 500gb to 1 tb. i was wondering if there is a way of putting them into a stand which is synced up to the pc allowing a lot more space for the pc and not worrying about storage space. I did also here about possibly optimising the hdds which allows them to run faster in the pc but not sure what that is about. any help you be fantastic. thank you and stay safe
  10. Today I built my computer and the hard drive I used was refurbished. After installing windows I noticed my pc was very slow and I couldn't install apps. After running a test with WD tool it showed the error in the pic I attached. The weird thing is chkdsk doesn't detect any errors or bad sectors and the smart status says pass on wd tool but it can't complete a quick test without displaying said error. I am afraid its a problem with the motherboard not the HDD

  12. BIOS isn't detecting HDD I've tried to changing the Power and data cables the cables are working, I installed another HDD and it works and when I saw disk management it shows (image below). Now Disk1 has windows 10 Pro installed it's working fine, but no sign of the other one, it's size is 500gb i.e. Disk0
  13. I'm at my wits end trying to figure out what wont work here. I put together a new Build Including the following parts Motherboard: Gigabyte B450m DS3H BIOS Version.F41 Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 RAM: 8GB Hard Drive: Samsung SSD 860 QVO 1TB Now I CAN get it to boot and function on my old 500GB Dell HDD effortlessly. (Thats how I have been doing but Im revisiting this issue) How do I get this Samsung one to work?? I'm attaching a picture of the notes I took of everything I tried... My original issue was getting Win10 installed onto it, felt confident i got it...but then it kept going into an install loop every time I tried to turn on and LOAD the OS. I could see it was installed on the SSD, but it would still try to prompt me to install Win10, or would give me a "failure to boot" message Since all that failed, I reset everything to default and went about my life with the old HDD Since my last attempts I got a cable to plug the Samsung SSD into my front USB and I installed Windows directly onto it to bypass installing from a separate USB...still won't boot Please help...I want this new SSD to work so badly and I cannot figure out what to do or where the issue is
  14. I want to add more HDD storage to my pc. Thing is, i'm out of hdd slots to mount them since my case only has 2 3.5" bays. Is there anything like an external enclosure that can connect into the internal sata ports or to a pci slot instead of usb?
  15. Please help! My pc recently gave up on me so I basically did a complete rebuild and literally everything is working perfectly except my old HDD wouldn’t show up anywhere, wasn’t in disk management, bios, anywhere. (SSD showed up no problem). I figured it just died with the rest of the old system and got a new one, still nothing. Thought maybe I got a defective unit so I returned it and got another new one, still won’t even spin. I have searched everywhere and feel like I have tried everything. I updated every driver I could think of and messed with everything I could in the bios but still nothing.Same Power and Sata cables and Sata port work on SSD but none of the HDDsI have plugged in just power to see if it would spin up.Any suggestions would be extremely appreciatedSystem:ASRock B365 pro4Intel i7-9700k2x Crucial ballistic 8gb DDR4-2666Cooler master MWE650 goldGeForce GTX 1060 OcCorsair Force 120gb SSDThe old HDDs was a 1tb seagate barracuda and the two new ones are 1TB Western Digital WD10EZEX
  16. Hi! I am refurbishing a 250 GB hdd from my old DELL laptop. To use it as an external drive I am going to buy a case for it. I found one that is compatible with 2.5 coll hdd and ssd wich is great because i will be able to use it with a newer ssd later on. the case uses usb 3.1. Obviously it won't reach ssd speeds but will it be faster than 3.0 with the hdd or will the hdd itself bottleneck and it won't matter??
  17. As the title suggest, is there anyway to combine two different hard drive disks into one without losing any data on them?
  18. Hoping anyone can provide insight, I brought my PC to microcenter and they did not diagnose it correctly and I believe they lied in the testing they performed, to say the least I am upset. BSOD errors I have experienced this far trying to troubleshoot: 0x080070035 0xc0000221 0xc0000428 PFN_LIST_CORRUPT BCD Errors when trying to install windows Other Errors: Within MSINFO32 most of my networking information is N/A System crashes with trying to download and install any software/game/app/update Troubleshooting performed: Wiped all drives within Linux and attempted to reinstall windows using a known good windows installer Cloned my laptop drive to my Samsung SSD and all other drives, system will only boot off a cloned drive or fresh install drive from another system, can not install windows using my MOBO Already exchanged my Samsung SSD for a working one. My M.2 1tb Crucial drive is dysfunctional as tested by microcenter Current time: After picking up my PC from microcenter I tested only my 860 EVO in the system and still got the BSOD with code 0xc0000221 and the 0xc0000428. I've tried booting to the windows install media with 0 drives connected and still got BSOD, this installer works on any other systems just fine System specs: Inwin 850 PSU Nvidia RTX 2070 (tried with this uninstalled as well i7 9700K 7 Inwin RGB fans Inwin 303 MSI white dragon edition case Asus z390-E gaming Strix Pci based USB hub(disconnected right now) 32gb trident z RGB RAM (I have tested each stick in each slot with no change) Big example: Installing destiny or anything else will cause the system to crash Dragonball fighterz anti cheat flags something and crashes the game When trying to install NFS heat through origin it will download, how the progress bar will get to 47% drop to 32%, go to 39% drop again and then the system crashes I got tried to write to read only memory errors as well. I have swapped out many a drive at this point with 0 success Honestly at this point I have no clue what is causing this to crash and obviously I'm not spending any more money for a diagnosis because any place will incorrectly diagnosis it. The system boots off a drive with an OS whether it's cloned or clean installed on another system. I cannot clean install on this setup no matter how hard I try. I am 97% certain my board is borked. But before I RMA and spend time completely down if like to see if I can fix it. What bothers me the most is I told microcenter the issue with even booting to an installer and they said they were able to but the second I got home and tried mine I got a BSOD once again. I feel they straight up lied.
  19. Hello everyone! I am facing a Problem which 2 IT students couldnt figure out in about 10 hours of troubleshooting. I got myself a 3 New fans for the Front of my PC Case (Dark Base Pro 900). After installing them, my SSD started acting up and i thought it was just a cable error and checked the cables, was all good. SSD had my OS installed and just wouldnt boot. "please select a proper boot device and reboot". So i thought maybe my Windows just randomly got screwed up and reinstalled Windows. SSD booted up like 2 times into windows and then suddenly stopped again, so same procedure. nothing. I tried different HDDs and SSDs, it was booting flawless with them. I thought maybe it was bad luck and my SSD just died. So i went ahead and bought myself a M.2. Installed windows and all good. (my main SSD was still working btw, but just not booting into windows. Couldnt figure out why.) After installing the M.2 and Windows, etc. i started reconnecting my HDDs and SSDs. This is where things got real messed up. 2 Hard drives showing when booting, reboot, only 1, reboot again - none. We were unpluging and repluging cables for about 5 hours trying to figure out if a Hard drive, a SATA cable, or a PSU cable died. All cables are working just fine and so do the Harddrives. So we started installing one Hard drive and boot, then 2 and boot, then 3. etc. It stops working when i connect 2 HDDs at the same time. All SSDs + 1 HDD works, but 0 SSDs and 2 HDDs don't. i really cant tell if its the HDDs, the Mainboard or Windows. We basically tried everything and no result. It was working just fine and the it suddenly stopped. I really hope someone could help me out in here. Thanks in advance. My Specs: i7 6700K MSI Gaming Pro Carbon Z270 MSI GTX 1070 16 GB DDR4 Trident Z Ram 750W Corsair PSU.
  20. I recently installed in my pc a 3tb hdd and I noticed that i could only use 2000gb. For some reason I cannot allocate 700gb. Can somebody help me ?
  21. So as my question shows, I was wondering If Hard Drives would benefit from PCIE 4.0, since SSDs appearently can benefit from the extra data speed bandwith. [21-12-2019_01_23.]
  22. Hi everyone. I upgraded my wife's PC with my older Motherboard, CPU and RAM, and added her HDD to that rig. Also added a brand new SSD. Bios does not detect the new drive or the old drive. Strange thing is, the DVD ROM is detected when the exact same SATA port and cable is used. And why would the brand new SSD also not be detected at all? Before testing the new SSD, I thought the HDD had failed. The first time I started, it seemed as though the Windows loading screen came up - now automatically booting from the HDD - but then a very quick blue screen led to a sudden restart of the computer. After that the motherboard did not want to detect ANY harddrive at all. But still, the DVD ROM is detected.. Can anyone help with a solution please? Thanks in advance!
  23. I bought a refurbished Hitachi HDD about 2 years ago now. About 6 months ago when accessing it, it will make a horrible clicking noise, but only when accessing certain files. I can use Macrium Reflect to make a image backup of the Hitachi drive but no sound is made, totally silent. On the other hand If I try to import skyrim mods that are in .zip format it will click like mad. The clicking happens when either writing or reading from the drive but as stated before only with certain files. Hope Someone Can Help! Thanks!
  24. Hi guys, just wondering if any of you know or experienced the same issue like I do. The problem here, my Toshiba 2.5" mechanical hdd suddenly make a strange sound/noise, then it disappear from windows or undetected. After the clicking sound is over, it then reappear on windows. Oddly enough, I install Hard Disk Sentinel software and it reads just fine and even says excellent in health and performance. I use Windows 10 Pro btw. I could use some advice from any one having this issue or know what is happening. Thanks a bunch
  25. So I purchased a WD Black 4TB HDD (WD4005FZBX) directly from the western digital online store and was testing out the performance and got these scores from CrystalDiskMark (Screenshot attached to thread) I then proceeded to attempt to test the relative performance compared to other people who had the same drive on UserBenchMark and it gave me an error stating "Relative performance n/a - RAM cached drive detected" I then realized that RAM Caching was enabled (which is a new concept to me) and was wondering what the overall pros and cons are to having RAM Caching enabled or disabled. From what I have found online, RAM Caching improves performance but is less reliable in the case of power failure or other failures and can cause data loss. I want the most out of my system, but I specifically bought the WD Black 4TB so that I could have a reliable drive that performs and also backup my data and keep it safe, as my old 1TB Toshiba HDD is over 5 years old, (Feb 2014 manufacture date) and has been in use since with no issues. (I plan on using other backup devices/drives, but that is another discussion for another day) This leads to my sorta simple question. Should I disable RAM caching or leave it enabled? I want to keep my data as safe as possible with what I have now, would there be any detriments to disabling RAM caching temporarily until I find more/better backup solutions?
