Hello guys, recently, i have noticed that my 16 TB HDDs (which I cant backup at the moment), make this really strange noise, always when booting up the PC, and sometimes, randomly while its on. When it happens while its on, the file explorer suddenly stops working for a few seconds, doesn't respond, and then, the sound stops, and it starts working again with no problem. This happened with just one HDD a while ago, and then, after I had to change the PSU for another unrelationed problem, the other one started beeping, as well. The only thing that they both have in common, (aside from the brand and storage, two Seagates IronWolfs Pro), its that I noticed that the SATA data cables, dont get completely plugged in the HDDs, both of them are a little loose, even when they have those metal plugs that should make them get stuck when plugged correctly (they are pretty stuck in the MOBO), but not in the HDDs. Maybe that could be a problem of the space of my case, which is a bit small, but the SATA power and data cables arent really the most flexible, and the usual slot which are in cases for the storage isnt always the most comfortable for the cable management, but i would like to know if someone knows what could be causing this noise and the stuttering. I took some videos to catch exactly the type of sounds they produce, and i will share the links to YT, to provide a better understanding. I already did some basic tests with Crystaldisk, which told me that the HDDs were in good shape (they have a little over one year of use). Also, I must clarify that I'm using the Y-splitter in the SATA power cable for the connection to the PSU for both HDDs. PD: Sorry if the question isn't that well redacted, but my english isn't pretty good. PD2: I already created this same thread in Tom's Hardware, and while they gave me good advice, the guy who answered also couldn't diagnose the exact cause of the sound, and while I think it could be an issue of the connection, I don't know any way of truly verifying it. HDD sounds while booting:

So I installed a new OS in while only plugging the SSD in and not the HDD, and when I was done installing the new OS, I noticed that my HDD was not detected in windows/disk management/ device manager but is detected at BIOS. Does anyone know a fix for this? I don't know if this has to do with anything but my past OS was windows 10 HOME and my newly installed one is windows 10 PRO. Also I watched a yt tutorial in installing windows from a USB (my pc is DELL so the BIOS might be a bit different), and the guy I watched was switching from legacy to UEFI so that's what I did. As title states, I have a machine running Ubuntu Desktop (for now) that successfully booted. I tried to configure a 2 hardware RAID 1 arrays on 4 of the non-boot HDDs, and after applying the config in BIOS, I'm hanging on the BIOS logo screen for 20 mins with no change. This is the second time this has happened; previously this resulted in a total motherboard bricking. CPU: AMD 5600G; using the integrated graphics MB: MSI Pro B550-VC AM4 ATX Boot SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB HDDs: 2x 1TB WD Blue drives, 2x 4TB WD Red Drives (connected via Sata, all showed up in the BIOS) OS: Ubuntu Desktop (just to test the config; likely moving to debian) BIOS config: enabled RAID mode, restarted, cleared the drives, applied 2 RAID 1 arrays. This has me completely stumped. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

(Greetings from Belgium) Tech support: What the title says... I've recently had to expand my storage. I added in a 1TB WD Barracuda (Came from an old iMac, am using at my own risk. I know) and had an old 128 M.2 SATA SSD lying around. Since I have Zero budget left, I thought that maybe it'd be possible to use the SSD as a caching drive just like Intel Optane or AMD StoreMi, however StoreMi (Using an AMD system) didn't want to install and had not the most encouraging reviews. After some reserach I found an 'alternative' but that uses RAMdisks, not what I want. I barely have enough with 16GB. Right now I do not use the SSD and have simply set 120GB of page file on that SSD lmao So... what if I set the RAMdisk to that pagefile? Wouldn't that work? It's an SSD so it's still faster than the HDD. Why wouldn't it work? Before attempting this I have tried researching a bit, but the only results I found were "Pagefile in ramdisk", the opposite of what I was looking for. Is there anyone savy enough about this topic to help me out? I do not feel like finding out the hard way myself (Like I did with 2nd hand PSUs :))))) I did not want to use storage spaces, since it limits storage to 256GB (128GB from the SSD + 128 from the HDD) for some reason. I want the full 1TB to be used. Additional info: Windows 11, latest Ryzen 9 5950X non OC + NH-U12A 16GB PC4 3200MT/s GTX 780 3G Aorus B550 Elite v2 (rev1.2) -> CPU and MOBO appear compatible with storeMI, but does not work Thanks in advance. rode PS: Might be a stupid question and the answer might've been there all along, but let this be the answer to those lost with the same question as I have.

Hello, Recently I've been thinking about formatting my hdd which currently has windows on it however I use an ssd for my OS. Now I would just format it like it was nothing but unfortunately I've got mostly some 'crucial' data on it. I would transfer all the files on my sata ssd which is new and wanted to put some of my games on my hdd which would have 'less intensive' games on my hdd. I would transfer all my important stuff onto my ssd and then get rid of windows but all the data is over 500gb+ and I only have a 480gb ssd. Maybe I could use a usb stick?

Is it possible to setup ZFS/Btrfs RAID with just 1 drive, and will just add more drives in the future? I currently just purchased 1 20TB IronWolf & planning on buying another 1 later this year for my Jellyfin/Nextcloud server. I plan on getting another 20TB NAS drive in the future, and i don't want to deal with erasing the drive, and just want to simply add the drive for and enable redundancy. Then add a 3rd for RAID 10.

Hello community. A year ago I bought Ultrastar 20 TB - had no problems with it. So recently, just few weeks ago, I purchased another one - same Ultrastar 20 TB. But this new one driving me crazy cause it has this permanent vibration. And because of this vibration it is impossible to keep it in the case - it makes all kinda crazy sounds. I made a few videos for you to check. I purposely did not attach the data cable to it, only the power cable. I also recorded my previous 20 TB - to show that it does not vibrate as much as this one. Besides these two I have 18 TB, 16 TB also Ulstrastar HDD's and none of them have such vibration. On this video I recorded just the new one. It's out of the case, inside the case it's much worse. BTW - the read/write sounds that you will hear on the video are from the other drives that I have, I am totally used to that sounds, but this buzzing sound from vibration drives me crazy. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kf_JmPzGREUXYT84p8RaeYmEAkWLHWAe/view And on the second video I recorded my new 20 TB vs my last year 20 TB - to show that the other does not make that vibration and sound. Both of them are disconnected from data cable. When I touch the older one drive - I can feel slight vibration too, but it's so small, that it does not cause any strange sounds. Same goes to all the rest of my HDD's. But this new one - vibrates like crazy. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KSOvGMKpYovGmHXTlLw2ixm3QMJjb3pj/view And in this video how it sounds when it's installed in the case = / https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BgKgQdnN9fgnEG35oLUGxUJD-71j_bxu/view So right now just put it outside of the PC case, on a pillow, so at least the loud buzzing went away, but the deep one is still there. So, maybe someone of you encountered the same problem? Any advise what to do here? I contacted WD support, but right now they did not answered much, just send me first "general" answer - read this article, read that article. What do you think are my changes for a RMA? Cause they might answer smth like - "Oh, well, it's HDD, it has moving parts, it's expected, SMART test passed(BTW I did it, it does pass) - so nothing we can do, just live with it." And I will loose few months/weeks for RMA.

Hello, Recently I bought an ssd and I would like to swap some of my games onto my ssd. This is because I have a copy of windows 10 and want to format it. However I could transfer the files and make the game download from that but would that have any difference than just completely newly re installing them? I would like to benefit of having the game completely re installed but still having the same levels and data inside the game? Would that be possible. For example ats would I still have my profile and level? Same steam, epic, riot games, blizzard accounts!

Budget (including currency): AUD 1500AUD Country: Australia, Sydney Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Other details (Was thinking to use some sort of used cpu, looking for a motherboard with atleast 8sata ports. I have an old i3-2120, and 2x4 gb laptop ddr3 1333mhz, 20year old 300w psu from an acer prebuilt with 0 pcie connectors, (2x1gb ddr2, 2x512mb ddr2, 1x1gb ddr2) all 667mhz, 2gb of ddr3 laptop 1333mhz, old athlon 64 x2, old sound card, x1950 pro gpu. I was thinking: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/8t9FHG Edit: No RGB please, looking for a PC case that can hold a lot of hard drives. I dislike Teamgroup and Silicon Power products as they are unreliable and untrustworthy.

Hello, I’m looking into upgrading my parents old Satellite Z830 laptop with a new cheap non-mechanical drive. They have a mechanical 128GB hd in there and it’s really slow. I’m just not sure what to look for exactly and not sure if modern drives will be compatible since this laptop is quite old. For the size anything at or above 128GB would be fine as they mostly use usb sticks for storage. Bonus recommendation: memory upgrade. They have 6GB so I thought I might as well look into upgrading to 8GB. Again, not sure what would be the optimal ram upgrade here. Budget: as low as possible since the laptop is old and I believe that any upgrade will be much better regardless of cost. Thanks in advance for the recommendations.

Hello. So, i have an old laptop (ROG GL553VD). Currently, im using an HDD (i just dont bother to replace it because i already built my own PC). I gave my laptop to my sister, but she constantly telling me that the laptop is too slow. I mean yeah, its old, but it was not as slow as i remembered. I went and troubleshot the prob, and i found that the HDD is constantly running at 100% usage. What i do: 1. defrag 2. removing unused app 3. error checking 4. delete temporary files 5. check for viruses (i got malwarebytes installed, and the result is clean) But i got no result. I also checked that my hdd Health is currently at 86%. Is that the reason? Is that number means that i have to change my HDD? or can i save this HDD? Thank you very much (FYI i got 8GB of RAM if that helps)

I've been using an old pc ad a minecraft server on and off for the past 3years the pc contains an a10-6700 apu 16gb of ddr3 ram and a gt620 (all the parts are from an old prebuilt the acer tc-130). (I'm gonna call it a server for a large part of this even tho technically it is just a regular desktop) The pc has been working for the last 3yrs, as the nature as a second older pc I've cycled alot of components in and out including multiple harddrives and os (windows 8.1 , windows 10, 11(even tho it's unsupported I goy it working) and ubuntu server) The server was working last week when I decided to switch out the mechanical harddtive into my main pc to speed up chunk loading, the drive ended up dying a day in probably unrelated but gor detail. So I decided to use my 500gb crucial sata ssd to have the minecraft server on with ubuntu server as the os (same as the harddrive) point is i finish rendering the world and went to put the ssd into the server and was met with a reboot or insert proper boot media. Since I've attempted to use 4 different drives a harddrive with Windows 11 on a harddrive with ubuntu server on and my ssd i plan to use with ubuntu server and even tried to use a blank drive and install ubuntu server onto it with boot media which worked whilst installing but after restarting as part of the install process (the part when removing the usb stick) it can't detect a boot device. Since I've tried 5 different ram sticks, a range of different sata cables. I've some what attempted tk change bios settings but have a limited knowledge do a fix to the issue is likely to be seated there if there is one. The only other thing I could suspect is the powersupply howrver the harddrives spin to life on power on so this doesn't seem to be an issue any input is appreciated there's 2 links showing below. (Don't judge me for being on carpet and using motherboard boxes to keep of it ik it's risky but I don't rlly have many other option available at the momment) Boot without keyboard: https://youtube.com/shorts/LdTeL4OqOGM?si=-YN1-Oj4UObUbapt Bios and boot with keyboard: https://youtu.be/zn2lzjh9ZkY?si=9L89AV98_yAI7V8n

Okay, I'm really sorry to bug y'all, but I'm finding real spotty info on this topic. I'm running Windows 10, and (separate from my boot drive) I've got a 2TB SSD, and 5x3TB HDDs. I'm trying to run the HDDs in Parity, with the SSD as a cache. I've run Storage Spaces before on just the HDDs with Parity, and I've seen several posts around the web discussing Tiered Storage with Storage Spaces as well. However, I've only seen folks talk about striping or mirroring with tiered storage. Every time I see someone with the same thoughts as me ask, it's just people dunking on Parity without being much help. Look, I'm just a gamer with a habit of data hoarding. I'd like to maximize my storage, with a little redundancy, but still have whatever game is my addiction of the week load relatively snappy. I appreciate any advice y'all can give me, and hope everyone reading this has a lovely day!

My SSD is full and it has windows and driver and other things but my 2tb HDD isn't full is it possible that I can move windows and drivers and other data into the HDD untill I get a bigger SSD?

Currently I have a SSD with windows and other programs and a HDD for storage and games and other miscellaneous stuff. I use the SSD as a windows boot drive. I have recently acquired 2Tb NVme m.2 drive and wanting to move stuff from my SSD to the new and improved SSD and keep my HDD as a storage. Also is their a easier way to move games from HDD to the new 2Tb SSD without having to unistall it and reinstalling it to the SSD.

Recently I have noticed my Seagate 2 TB HDD (which I mostly use to store files and games) is very slow when copying files and unreliable in general. Nad in the task manager my HDD shows 100% every few sec when even not doing anything. I tried running chkdsk but it says errors found I can't fix them because I don't have enough free disk space or something. Is there anyway to fix this?

I have a Seagate Mobile HDD 1TB that stopped working suddenly. I mainly used the hard drive as a portable disk drive via an enclosure. The issue is when I connect it in through the USB port it just rings a tone as proof of connection to the PC. The enclosure lights up with the vibration of spinning the drive as usual disk drives do. But it does not appear on the "This PC" folder as the other disk drives do. However, it shows in the Disk Management as unknown, not initialized, and unallocated drive. I have watched several YouTube videos to fix it but not worked. I also tried by AOMEI Partition Assistant to Rebuild the MBR, and format the drive but did not work. I have added several photos of the states and the process of fixes carried out for the disk drive herewith. Is it possible to fix the drive? Any help and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
