  1. This summer to get a bit more invested in programming, decided to finally pick up a little project of my own. I usually have all my expenses down on an excel sheet, to make sure I break even at minimum lol Which gave me an idea for my first project of my own. a GUI expanse calculator. Decided to go with Python, mainly because I feel like there is more doing with python than the little time I spent with java, with more time spent figuring out the peculiar syntax, I want this project to be a good practice getting comfortable with using classes, storing files, reading from them to put on, creating a decent UI, all that. Feel free to snap me out of the excel sheet way I am approaching this, and if there is a better way to make this. TLDR The reason I made this post, I am unsure what is considered a proper way to store weekly expenditure, a list? How do I go on storing them permanently, so that the next time I open it, the previous data is still there? What's the proper way of storing them so that I can easily read them again, and put them on a table on the final app. Some pointers would be appreciated, not looking for someone to tell me to do xyz, more like you'll need this and that, look into that and that, play around with them kinda thing. I hope I wasn't too obscure, any help is appreciated.
  2. Native GUI/GPU Support Coming 'This Year' For Windows Subsystem for Linux Source: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/05/19/wsl2_gui/ Through collaboration between Canonical and Microsoft, it looks like WSL is going to be getting a big upgrade to include native GUI and GPU support later this year. While it's been possible to get a GUI environment working for some time, this will be the first out-of-the-box support. Would you have use cases for GUI or GPU support in WSL?
  3. Just a quick question: It seems to me that nowadays when i buy a game it is linked with steam or something similar, each with separate logins. Not to mention things like eve, blizzard launcher, elite dangerous launcher. Is there a piece of software that might act as a central interface. I'm thinking of something that when installed asks me to enter log in details for each client and then auto logs to all on launchers, creating a central interface. Not even counting origin, not sure if that still exists. All these launcher are beginning to drive me insane!

  5. During the summer I worked at a small IT shop doing basic installations of computers for clients. Since 99% of the computers went to random places, things such as volume licensing or AD weren't an option for easy installation and setup. Microsoft kept rearranging the Control Panel & Settings application in every update, so it was pretty infuriating to try to do anything and had to keep searching for basic settings, so I decided to create a simple program/GUI in Autohotkey. I call it Panel, the missing GUI for Windows. Source code and compiled exe's are available in the Github repository It's made with Autohotkey and the installation functionality uses the Chocolatey package manager. Features - GUI with buttons to quickly access settings, folders etc. (that do not constantly move or rearrange. Hint hint, Microsoft) - Ninite-style GUI for installing applications via Chocolatey - To use the installation feature, you need to have Chocolatey installed or install it with clicking the CMD- or PS Install buttons, which will run the command to install Chocolatey. - KDE-style alt+drag window moving and resizing. Original script by Jonny from Autohotkey script showcase Hotkeys - Global - alt+§ WindowShade - alt + left/right mouse button Move and resize windows - ctrl + q Send alt-F4 - ctrl + h minimize window - Windows Explorer - F1 up 1 directory - Panel - F1 cmd.exe - F2 Run… -prompt - F5 reload Panel - F6 reload Panel as admin - F7 run WUMT.exe (Windows Update Minitool, needs to be in the same directory as Panel) - F8 Run portable CCleaner (needs to be in the same directory) - F9 Windows Update - F12 Open Folders panel that stays on top of other windows - alt + q UAC settings - alt + w Control Panel - alt + d Task Manager - alt + F1 Turn display off I didn't originally make it to be published anywhere, but since a lot of other people are also having the same frustrations with Windows, I decided to release it. Any comments, suggestions or improvement ideas?
  6. Hello world! Lol. I have this great idea for a piece of software that i'd like to create and then eventually sell as a product. After doing some research on similar apps (in the vein of music notation programs) I decided to take the dive and tackle C++ language. The thing is, I'm beginning to get a sense of just how complex GUI programming is. So I thought I might code the app myself using most likely Code::Blocks with the WxWidgets library (or Qt library) to get a nice working "rough draft" of the software. Then, on down the road, take my GUI ideas to somebody who is really good at that sort of thing and pay them to do the GUI for real. I just want to make sure from someone with experience in software development that that is a viable strategy. I don't want to "code myself into a corner" along the way foreclosing the possibility of me being able to outsource that in the future. It would totally not be cool to put in years of work only to learn that you are stuck with a GUI situation dealing with all kinds of licencing strings attached and you can't change it or it would take forever if you wanted to. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

    Java gui

Hey, im askng if anyone has any videos or sites to help me to understand java gui coding and adding functionalities to buttons, i know non gui java coding (i use netbeans)
  8. I've been working on a simple dice game in python part of a school challenge and am adding a gui. Its not meant to be anything grand, just like minesweeper level, so I'm using tk/tkinter. I hit an odd issue, when I try to open/import an image it works...kinda When the function that creates the window and image is on its on script and is called to as shown here, it works with no issue. but when I call the function in the game code I get the following error The function is called with just rolldisplay() and it finds the icon image with no trouble so I'm not sure what the issue is. I've tried moving the window/image to the main program(instead of using a function) and I tried appending the system path and giving a full path name. Thanks I would list the full code but its something like 300 lines and is still messy since I'm adding the gui to what was a functional text based game.
  9. I'm working on a Battleship game with a few friends, just a little project, and I just do not understand how to make a GUI for it. I have looked at stuff like this for reference: ChessBoardWithColumnsAndRows.java But I do not understand how a lot of it works. The actual variable that makes up the board is a 2D array of booleans that is 12x12. How would I make a simple GUI in JFrame that would show 12x12 boxes that show whether the boxes boolean is true or false. Is it possible to do in under 50 lines? Here is the code for the rest of the game: BattleboardAI.java BattleboardPlus.java goodjob2_wav.AU laugh_wav.AU Ship.java

  11. from tkinter import Tk, Label, Button num = 1 class MyFirstGUI: def __init__(self, master): self.master = master master.title("Button Simulator 2019") self.label = Label(master, text="Welcome to Button Simulator!") self.label.pack() self.first_button = Button(master, text="Button", command=self.button) self.first_button.pack() def button(self): num = num + 1 self.new_button = Button(master, text = "Button {}".format(), command = self.button) self.new_button.pack() root = Tk() my_gui = MyFirstGUI(root) root.mainloop() I'm trying to learn TKinter for for my computer programming class and this is my code, I'm trying to make the button "first_button" create another button, and any button created will also be able to create another button. Each button will be labeled Button, Button 2, Button 3, etc. I keep getting errors, can anyone help? Thank you.
  12. Hello fellas, I'm looking for a website / software which would allow me to edit HTML documents in a way that I can drag & drop input fields and check boxes on specific locations without having to actually go and mess with the CSS by hand. My goal is to convert PDF documents into HTML (currently using this website https://www.idrsolutions.com/online-pdf-to-html5-converter which only gets the visual part done, no function tho), add the input fields & boxes (would be more awesome if converter did that. but so far haven't found anything decent) so that I can read the user input data & save it into SQL database / or make it accessible for use via JS / PHP. If you guys have any suggestions, please share! I'd appreciate it! Thanks in advance!
  13. I am currently using audacity with a file that has many tracks. They do not fit on my 1080p screen well. Is there a way I can make the interface smaller so that I can see more in my audacity window?
  14. I don't know about anyone else but do you feel websites (and GUIs in general) need to do more to: Use more easily distinguishable colour schemes? http://colorbrewer2.org/ provides many different schemes including photocopy and colourblind safe options. Follow Schneiderman's 8 Golden Rules?
  15. & it looks cool Firefox has a brand new redesigning to it's search interface & it actually looks cool, The new GUI features a regular drop down search suggestion & you can open the results on another wesite via the given buttons (quick links directly instead of the old method of drop down arrow & change search engine that way) The New Interface looks pretty easy for a fluid & easy workflow , Demo Gif: Pretty neat feature & redesign , a great improvement for firefox users , Imo, I guess this is a very short framework news post from me today as that's the only update available as of now, nothing more, other than that you already know mozzila switched over to yahoo as default search partner, Hope they add in more features to it like this one, leave your thoughts on this down belooooo Link: http://techcrunch.com/2014/11/26/firefox-redesigns-its-search-interface-ahead-of-yahoo-switch/
  16. I'm just wondering if its possible to program a GUI or even the entire software interface for a jet fighter using x86 hardware with all aircraft specific hardware going into an emulator or translator that turns certain data like data from the radar into data that x86 hardware can read. I'm just wondering if this is possible because the F-35 has a really great cockpit layout were the entire cockpit is basically a giant monitor that display important flight and radar data. BTW I frogot to mention that the flight display is also a touch screen, so you can choice your weapons or radar targets with a touch of an icon or target to lock on to.
  17. I have been running running GUI Miner to mine Litecoins when I am not using my computer, which has primarily been whilst sleeping and at school. I know there is a lot of time that I could be mining if I wasn't letting my computer idle when I forget to switch GUI Miner on. So I was wondering, is their any way to set a miner to start after 15 minutes of inactivity? I'm using Windows 7 by the way.
  18. Hi, so I am planning to make a desktop GUI Windows app as a part of my physics seminar work. The app would let the user easily make and arrange a few magnets, and then it would calculate and draw their magnetic field. The problem is that I don't know which IDE or language should I use to create it. I have got quite decent experience in C# or Java, so I was thinking of a Windows Form Application or a JavaFX app. Would it be a good solution or are there any better ones?
  19. Hi all, I made a bootable USB of command line WinPE, but I am actually looking for the graphical version of WinPE. It shows the file structure and has some decryption/encryption options. Does anybody know where to find this?
  20. Hey guys Does anyone here know how can I find a word in the QTextEdit and change the color of it. Thanks for your help and remember that no idea is a bad idea.
  21. MY COMPUTER IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. I NEED IT 100% WORKING. Im a full time manager of a computer shop so I work 9am to 5pm monday to friday. Im also building my own online business which I work on every day from 6pm to 1am and sundays 9am to 10pm. Also because I'm 19yo I'm still getting an education so im currently doing an audio mastering course on saturdays and any other spare time I get. Also note I just dropped $25,000 on my home load so dont have too much money to spend on a new computer at the moment. MY ISSUE All interface devices freeze; this includes display, keyboard, mouse, and speakers/headset switch. Normally i'd assume this was a simply computer freezing but I'm still able to do the following: My music is still playing I'm still able to access my webserver using another computer and browse the site im currently building. I can still play music and videos over the network. My phones bluetooth can still connect and stream music through my PC’s speakers. So as you can see the computer isn't frozen because I can still use it through other devices. its seems like its just the interface locking up. This issue started about a month ago and has happened about 5 or 6 times now. Ive got my Astro A50 wireless headset set as default audio device so when I switch the MIXAMP off my computer will automatically default to my Audioengine A5+ speakers. This allows me to easily switch between headset and speakers by simply turning on and off the headsets MIXAMP. This method doesn't require any 3rd party software. When the freezing issue occurs the system will not switch to headset if i turn the MIXAMP on (windows inst changing audio device). Another issue I regularly have which may or may not be related is windows file explorer stops responding and crashes while attempting to cut and paste files. This happens on average once every 2 days (I probably cut and past hundreds of files in a 2 day period). My system is always running many programs, my CPU never drops below 95%, RAM never below 10GB, HDD occasionally below 100% but rarely less than 10%. My CPU handles sits between 90,000 and 200,000. I restart my computer once about every 3 months. A list of software I have open most of the time or always is listed below and all software listed towards the end of the list is at least opened once between restarts: Sorenson Squeeze: usually 4 to 6 instances of this application encoding videos. Squeeze is always running, its never off, and after a restart its the first application I opened. Brackets: a text editor software that I mostly use for making websites. I also use this softwares live preview feature which is dependent on a 3rd party web service (I use WAMP). Brackets is always open, I don't close this program even if i'm not planning on editing the site for a few days. WAMP: wamp server is a website development environment for Apache, MySQL, and PHP. WAMP is a startup item on my system, it also runs 24/7. Google Chrome: I generally have hundreds of tabs open and 3 instances of chrome running (Normal, Account, and Incognito). Im a bit supported of google apps, so many of my tabs open are in google app’s. About 30-50 tabs open will be google docs/sheets, I always have google drive, google music, and google mail open. NOTE: google music continues to play while my issue occurs (interface freezes). WinRAR: this program runs properly half the time the computer is on. I use WinRAR to compress completed project folders which I then transfer to my NAS for archiving. (I keep all data, never know if you're going to need it again) FileZilla: usually 5 instances open constantly. Adobe Photoshop: use constantly, its opened and closed about 30 times a night. uTorrent: use constantly Adobe Audition: this software is mostly open as I don't close the application until I completely finish a project. I only spend large chunks of time using this software on Saturdays, most of the time its minimized. Adobe Illustrator: use daily Adobe Acrobat Pro: use daily MKVmerge: use daily VLC: use daily Adobe Lightroom: use occasionally Adobe Premier: used occasionally Adobe AfterEffects: used occasionally Sony Vegas Pro 13: used occasionally I'm very careful what software is installed to my system, I try to only use popular well known software. I mostly have professional applications, and have not installed any 3rd party codecs. MY SYSTEM SPECS - yes i know this hardware isn't suitable for what i'm using it for. AMD A10-7800 AsRock A88M-HD+ rev.1 (BIOS ver: 2.70) 16GB Kit of 2133Mhz AMD RAM (Kit of 2) 500GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD 3TB WD RED HDD Noctua low profile CPU cooler LG BluRay Burner Qualcomm Atheros Ar938x Wireless Network Adapter Corsair 550w PSU (yes i know its more than double the wattage I require) NO DEDICATED GRAPHICS Antec NSK-3100 Case WINDOWS 8.1 PRO Windows Defender (no other anti-virus software or on demand scanners.) Other Equipment Astro A50 wireless headset Audioengine D1 DAC Audioengine A5+ Speakers Logitech K290 keyboard Logitech M950 mouse LG 34” Ultrawide display (34UM95) So far what i've done to fix this issue is give my old screen a love tap in which I broke it and my wrist Ive also tried RAM test, HDD test, checkdisk, removing unnecessary hardware (bluetooth dongle, external hard drives, and front panel audio.) Ive also tried updating all drivers. TEST: 2 passes using memtest normal settings, and 3rd pass using multi-threaded mode. HDD test using WD lifeguard.
  22. Hi guys, I imagine it would display all the files just like a normal windows explorer window but me clicking on any of them instantly allows me to rename the files as this is all it's purpose is. It would also allow me to jump between directories easily. That's just my "perfect world" idea though. Anything similar would work. I have 1000+ files to rename in multiple (300+) directories. So... yeah. :| Help is appreciated. I haven't started yet, as I'm waiting for the files to mirror onto another server, but once that's done, I'll be editing them (Monday, or 72 hours from now roughly).

  24. I'm trying to make a settings menu for my A-Level coursework in Computer Science and one of my aims is to have a themes system and a menu to change it. So far, the theme switching menu works and changes the backgrounds, text colours, button colours etc but the actual drop down menu doesn't change colour according to the theme and it doesn't look very good on the dark theme background. Has anyone got much experience with tkinter and can tell me which config value I need to set to change the colour? (attached are an image of my settings menu with the drop down open and the code for getting colours from json file and creating the option menu) Code: theme import from json: creating optionmenu: json file:
  25. Hi again, I've been trying to finish up this java project on break, and I've hit a snag with my GUI. Having trouble trying to get my GUI to display text on my text field. You may need all 4 of my classes in order to get my GUI to properly work I know there's a setText() method in java... Just kinda confused how to use it in this case. I've attached my java files as wordpad docs. If someone can take a look at it It'd be much appreciated. Thanks To my understanding when this a button is pressed, and that buttons name is say east. I'd call the method "myGame.move("East")" which would move the player east. In the game class there's a method I made called "getMessage()" which gets a local String variable that contains current message. I would assume the GUI code would then look something like "results.setText(myGame.getMessage())"; results is the text area where I'm displaying the text. but that's giving me errors *Snipit of my code* private class ButtonListener implements ActionListener{ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){ // extract the button that was clicked JComponent buttonPressed = (JComponent) e.getSource(); String temp; if (buttonPressed == quitItem){ System.exit(1); }else if (buttonPressed == newItem){ newGame(); }else if (buttonPressed == east){ myGame.move("East"); temp = myGame.getMessage(); results.setText(temp); }else if (buttonPressed == west){ myGame.move("West"); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == north){ myGame.move("North"); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == south){ myGame.move("South"); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == take){ myGame.take(); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == look){ myGame.look(); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == hold){ myGame.show(); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == help){ myGame.help(); results.setText(myGame.getMessage()); }else if (buttonPressed == drop){ String item = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, "What do you want to drop?"); if (item != null){ myGame.drop(item); } } results.append("\n\n" + myGame.getMessage()); if (myGame.gameOver()){ gameOver(); } } } Item.rtf Room.rtf game.rtf GUI.rtf
