  3. Google's Alphazero AI program took only 4 hours to teach itself chess well enough to beat the current world champion of computer chess, a chess engine named Stockfish. In a landmark event for computer chess, Alphazero tied 72 and won 28 of the 100 games it played against Stockfish 8. Alphazero was developed by Deepmind, a company acquired by Google in 2014, after defeating the world champion in Go with its own AlphaGo program back in October. Deepmind released a paper detailing the results of their program, in which 10 of the 100 games were completely published and many statistics were shared. One image I found particularly interesting showed the frequency of openings played as the program became smarter over the 4 hours. (See Attached image) The image was taken from a much more deep analysis on chess.com. I will link their article but will credit Ars Technica as an original source. Most chess engines that are popular today use a brute-force method of move calculation, a method that was almost always hindered by hardware, not necessarily by how they were programmed. However, Alphazero uses a different method of finding the best move. It uses a common AI technique known as enforcement learning. Many Grandmasters, who usually use engines such as Stockfish or Komodo as preparation tools, are eager for the program to become publicly available. GM Larry Kaufman, head of the Komodo engine, said he hopes that the program will effective on more than just Google's own servers. 4. Buy Google Pixel Buds on Amazon: http://geni.us/kbmz Does Android finally have its version of the Apple Airpods, or are the Google Pixel Buds more like 'Pixel DUDS'??
  5. I am a bit new to the whole NAS thing. I am considering getting a NAS, and since websearching has failed to display any results to amswer my question, I thought I would ask you nice folk. I am not sure 100% how to phrase this well, but I was wondering if there was a piece of software that can run in the background, and automatically sync files/folders with a NAS? Now I would like to clarify that I am not looking to keep the data JUST on the NAS and have a shortcut/redirect to the NAS folder because should I not have the NAS plugged in for some reason, I still want access to the files/folders but for it to be updated on the NAS should something change in the file/folder. I guess you could compare it to something like Google Drive, but with a NAS privately rather than on a cloud with very limited storage. As for what NAS I'll be getting, probably something like the cheapest Synology 2-bay (or 1-bay). I am very limited on budget. Thanks for your time.
  6. So... I just got my shiny new Just Black Pixel 2 XL yesterday, and I've been using it a lot since. Some first impressions: The design: While I personally would like for the glass shade to be smaller or for their to just be none all together, I gotta say I prefer it to an all glass phone because of durability reasons as well as the fact that I just prefer metal. The back feels nice in the hand, the phone is relatively thin so it's nice to use and there's still a good bit of weight to it so it feels pretty premium. I'm digging the design. Speakers: While they're pretty nice, I gotta say sound isn't as nice as I thought it would be with two front firing speakers. They're still pretty decent though and good enough for me. Performance: Ohhhh boy. This thing is smooth and FAST. I definitely haven't used a phone this nice before. I haven't even realized that it's become second nature for me to expect small stutters and stuff here and there while web browsing, browsing reddit, etc. or that it's second nature to expect small delays when opening and closing apps. This thing just responds when you touch it and I've only experienced any stutter at all in a few cases (swiftkey app though it seems their app just sucks and one or two websites that seem to jump around because of ads). Everything else is just butter smooth and this thing really just doesn't slow down. Did I mention the thing boots up in 5 seconds or so (from being fully shut down!)? Some people argue that SoC performance doesn't matter anymore since smartphone SoCs are fast enough already. I'm just going to go ahead and disagree with this. I tested with speedtest and I'm getting about the same network performance from the same location with my Pixel 2 XL as with my OnePlus 2; however, websites feel like they load faster on the Pixel, which is most likely down to the faster SoC crunching those websites faster. Look at web benchmarks such as Octane and Kraken and you'll see a numeric representation of what I'm talking about. Things just load. Display: As everyone knows the display has been a hot topic on the pixel 2 XL. There have been lots of things people have pointed out as issues and out of these I've only noticed two of them. Noticeable blue shift when viewing off axis: There definitely is a blue shift. I would say that if you're viewing the screen from more than 45 degrees off axis that there is a significant blue shift of the display. 45 degrees sounds like it wouldn't happen much, but it does. Sitting a little farther from the phone while it's flat on a table? Blue shift. Holding the phone somewhat close to your face while your face is towards the top of the display? The bottom blue shifts. Forty five degrees sounds like it wouldn't matter, but it really does. The blue shift is definitely there. However, for me it doesn't matter too much. You only really notice it when looking at mostly white stuff, so whenever watching videos or whatnot you really don't notice it even if you tilt the phone to really large angles. It's only when browsing the web with a white background that you might notice it. For me, while somewhat annoying, it isn't that horrible and not a dealbreaker. The other big thing I've noticed with the display is graininess. People haven't seemed to been talking about this much compared to black smudging (which I think there might be A LITTLE bit of, but if there is any there's so little that I really don't notice it) and burn in (which I can't report on since I literally got the thing yesterday lol). Even at really high brightness there is a noticeable graininess to the display which is most pronounced in whites. You don't see it as much in other colors. To best explain it, the graininess sort of looks like the way that white looks on a kindle e-paper display, if you've used a kindle before. It doesn't really bother me that much but that may be a dealbreaker for some people and it is there nearly all the time (if you're displaying white). I don't have much to report on when it comes to other aspects of the phone (such as camera) since I've only used it for less than a day. My first impressions though are pretty positive and the only downside is the display (but it's not a dealbreaker for me, just a mild annoyance). If anyone has any questions about it or stuff they would like me to test I'd be happy to do it (provided it doesn't involve breaking or damaging the thing lol).
  7. Primarily from Neowin, more from The Verge: It is no surprise that Google is using collected information from its users for AdSense, but now they are facing a hefty class action lawsuit ------------------------------------------- Here's the gist of it: Originated from the "Google You Owe Us Campaign" (Neowin) How it worked: Essentially, interacting with Google ads in safari allowed otherwise blocked third-party cookies to be installed (Via Neowin) In 2012, Google payed $22.5 million fine for the same safari breach (Verge) ------------------------------------------- A Google spokesperson attested, Frank I don't really mind what Google is doing because it is a "fair" trade for all of their free products, but I can definitely see where these people are coming from. Privacy is a huge must for most people and I hope they get the justice they want. Although, we've seen Google settle for dimes on the dollar before and that could very well happen again; let's see how this one goes.

  10. Source: https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/21/16684818/google-location-tracking-cell-tower-data-android-os-firebase-privacy Apparently Google had been tracking user data and location even when you had location services turned off and didn't have a SIM card. They did apparently by aggregating cell tower data but you can take a look at it for yourself in the article. Google said they would be rolling out a patch soon to reverse this but it shouldn't have been a thing in the first place.
  11. Hello all, I have an issue with my chromebox. I cannot do a capital t, y, z, x, c, v and m using shift or capslock. I can only use them with screen keyboard. It is quite annoying, as my password contains a capitol letter that I cant do. I have a Samsung chromebox xe300m220 (the letters need to be capital, but I cant press them) I have tested my keyboard with a Windows 10 Pc and a different chromebox, there it works properly. Does anyone know a solution?
  12. Yesterday YouTube automated algorithm decided to flag and block their own parent company video ad for the new Chromebook Pixel. https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/16/16666156/youtube-google-moderation-flag-spam-chromebook-video-error-machine-learning This just shows how much out of control YouTube as a company, when they are getting to the point of screwing themselves with these recent, very aggressive, algorithm changes all because of big advertisers. I believe there were way better forms of dealing with the situation, but now having signs of big companies from Hollywood and Tv invading YouTube, will it ever recover? This just solidifies my ideia of Floatplane being the future alternative for creators. A plataform built from the ground up from creators to creators, something LinusMediaGroup doesn't seem to aggre at this point in time. Clearly loosing a big big chance here.
  13. The idea: After watching a few DIY desk pc videos on YouTube, I kind of wanted to try building my own as well. It's getting cramped in my case anyway, and I can't find another good looking case online that has at least 2 frontal 140mm fans, and 2 5.25" bays as well. Personal taste: After messing about in a 3D modelling program called Google SketchUp, I eventually came up with something better-looking. There's still some things to be done, but I'd like to hear people's thoughts. I'm trying to make a DIY desk pc that has a industrial look to it if possible, or a more modern and sci-fi looking one. Also, like Linus did in a DIY desk pc project of his own, I may paint the table/build black as well, since that's my personal taste. Extra notes: If anyone has something to add that might look good on it for a industrial/sci-fi looking desk pc, I'd appreciate suggestions. I have a glass panel I want to add on top, but I'm waiting until I have a better idea of what to add to this build. Didn't really plan this, just making up stuff as I go along. Here's some pictures. Top panel. Custom designed glass panel will be lying on top. Not yet designed in SketchUp. Anyway, I thought of mounting a NZXT HUE+ between the drive bays and HDD's, just saying. By the way, since it'll be easy to see the cables, I thought of laying them down like this, close to each others: And to hold the cables down, I thought of using these if I can find them: Front panel. Parts: Power switch, Reset switch, 5.25" DVD-RW, 5.25" USB and Audio input, 120mm fan (air in) Left side panel, with easy access to I/O. Parts: Motherboard I/O, graphics card video output, USB 3.1 PCIe x2 extension card, 140mm fan (air in) Real panel with cutout by 10cm for airflow. Parts: ATX power supply unit, 2x 120mm fan (air out) Right side panel. Parts: 140mm fan (air in) NOTE: I thought about trying to center the fan, but it's not visible in the model as SketchUp messed up this side panel when making the hole. Bottom panel. Parts: ATX power supply unit NOTE: This hole is not final. It'll be cut out more properly the desk (may) be built. The I/O panel. With some custom desk pc builds I've seen people make, they often don't make a hole with easy access to the motherboard's I/O panel and other parts that may sit in the PCIe slots. For my use, I kind of need easy access to this area, as I often plug things either in or out. Even if I didn't, it's annoying when a cable starts malfunctioning and needs a replacement, but isn't easy due to the horrible access. With that said, I'd like to hear what you guys in this forum have to say. Ideas and suggestions are very welcome, as I want to make the design look better. Thanks in advance. ^-^
  14. I live in San Antonio and was notified by Google that Signs ups were starting. This is great in my opinion because, I currently have AT&T Fiber and pay $80 but am under a yearly contract. Pay TV and Cable is a dying industry and online streaming is where everyone is heading. So Google realizing this and just offering only Internet with no contract, hidden fee and only $55 a month is amazing and they can easily take all of Spectrum and AT&T customers from my area. All of my friends and family have already signed up and will be canceling their current ISP which all pay almost $100/month for 300mbps or gigabit if they have fiber. A quote from google said if you sign up for their online streaming service YouTube TV you will get a free Nvidia Sheild TV from Google which a great deal in my opinion. 9to5google reported on this as well. I believe with this pricing begin so competitive and Google now using the micro-trenching method of speeding up fiber installation to neighborhood, they will force all other greedy ISP's to upgrade their infrastructure and offer better prices. Google has said they currently have no plans to change the prices of fiber in existing cities and will Keep San Antonio as the only city with that $55 price. Sources: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/11/google-fiber-now-sells-55-per-month-gigabit-internet-in-one-city/ https://9to5google.com/2017/11/14/google-fiber-internet-launch-san-antonio-texas/
  15. Another day, another one of those "not so rosy" news for the Pixel 2 XL. Nathan K has conducted an analysis on the Pixel 2 XL's charging rate and found out that its charge rate on the supplied 18W USB-C Power Delivery wallwart was capped at 10.5W. (If you don't know who Nathan K is, he's a person who does independent testing of USB-C equipment alongside Benson Leung, although Benson works for Google while Nathan is completely independent.) Source: https://plus.google.com/u/0/102612254593917101378/posts/dnYcjUFxsg7 Nathan speculates that this could be done in order to reduce strain on the battery, which makes sense considering what happened to last year's Galaxy Note7. Source: Same as above While Google and LG would have good reasons on why they decided to be very conservative on their charge rate, supplying an 18W charger but only allowing the phone to use no more than slightly below 11W seems odd. Wondering if it would have been wise to go with a Power Delivery-compliant version of DASH/VOOC used in phones made by OnePlus and sister company Oppo.
  16. I’m a long time apple user (Since 1st gen Ipod) and have really been a loyal customer to them, but especially 2013-2017 I’ve been so annoyed at their games and I’ve always hated the amount or restriction they put you on for basically everything. My contract on my 6s is almost up and as I’ve been looking at other options besides apple, I’ve really fallen in love with the google pixel and pixel 2. I’m REALLY been thinking about getting a pixel 2 but it seems like every 10 minutes someone is having some random issue with the screen. In all honesty with no “YouTube Reviewer Bias” Is it REALLY that big of an issue?
  17. Google WiFi Help?

Alright, call me an idiot, but I need some help? I'm very new to the mesh networking scene, and I'm considering investing in a set of 3 Google WiFi devices for a mesh network. My question is this: When all three are set up (without interconnection with an Ethernet cable) do two of the three act as repeaters, essentially halving my internet speed? Or do all three somehow magically act as independent routers, allowing me full speed on all three..?
  18. Here is the situation, I stay logged into youtube and gmail. Today I tried to access gmail and instead of the loading screen, I was confronted with a login screen. Pish-posh I thought, I'll just login with my email and password. Too easy right? Much wrong, all the wrong. All your wrong are belong to. Anyway I typed my credentials in like it ain't no thing but a chicken wing and got a big fat Incorrect password error. Must be a type-o right? Capslock? Keyboard language? A short time later.... Nope, I did not make an error when typing the password, not the first or the tenth time. I am locked out of my google account and all I can come up with is either google dropped the ball or someone has hi-jacked my account. TLDR: I'm sad because google has kicked me out of my account and I don't know why. Any words of wisdom? PS Luke for WAN over James Nothing personal
  19. First off, brand new user here, but I've been watching Linus Tech Tips for years, so I'm glad to finally be here. Anyway... I have a dual monitor set-up with a high refresh rate gaming monitor and a TV set. In Chrome, watching 60fps content on video sites like YouTube causes the video to drop frames and eventually stutter if I watch it on the secondary display. Moving the video over to my primary display or using another browser and watching the same video at the same settings both result in 0 dropped frames System specs: OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K GPU: GeForce GTX 1080 RAM: 16GB DDR4 Storage: 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD/1TB WD Blue 7200RPM HDD/1TB WD Blue 7200RPM HDD Displays: ASUS VG248QE 144Hz panel/Vizio TV running at 60Hz Troubleshooting actions taken: Enabled/disabled hardware acceleration in Chrome Tried a clean installation of Chrome Synchronizing display refresh rates (IE, setting both of them at 60Hz) Graphics driver updates and rollbacks Problem still persists in BETA and Canary builds of Chrome Tried other monitors Tried other display outputs on the graphics card None of the above has helped. Any guidance or help would be appreciated as I'm at my wit's end with it and it's been going on for the better part of a year now. Thanks in advance, everyone
  20. Broken Nexus 7 2013

So, I have a Nexus 7 2013 and for a good while now (about a year) the micro USB connector has felt quite loose but nine times out of ten the device would charge immediately if I connected it to a charger. However about a month a go I went to plug the device in only to find that it wouldn’t charge. After taking it out of its case and fiddling some more I finally had it charging but stupid me then just thought he could unplug it then slip the case back on and everything would be fine BUT no I tried connecting for it to power but nothing. Then upon removing the back cover I saw just how loose the port was so I attempted to resolver the 4 legs that hold the port in place however like I suspected, that did not solve the problem. I looked EVEN closer and saw one of the tiny exposed wires that connected the socket to the pan was completely missing so I deemed the board at that point dead as resoldering a little piece of metal for that would be impossible for me. If anyone can find replacement boards (which from research sounds like I Require to have the 1.4 revision of the board) then please link them below and if anyone has any suggestions for a great £100 -£250 android tablet I could use to replace my Nexus then also link them below as well
  21. Hello ! I run a shooting range and we do competitions. and we want a scoreboard to evaluate our shooters. I was thinking excel. but im not sure how to do it. we need : x-y axis circle to pinpoint the bullet on the target. (the target has 10 layers but id like to expand with an out of bound one too) our targets are in packs of 10. with a specific pattern. 1 bullet per target. I want to see scores over time, trends of how the shooter shoots (to the left, to the right up, down...) so I was thinking coordinates. but im not sure how to do it. perhaps a website/database ? thanks !
  22. which i should buy

Guys, Please tell which phone should I buy for normal use for a little bit for gaming and for normal use I told you before mainly I want an easy carry phone which not so big and so small please give your suggestions
  23. I was wondering what the differences between Chrome and Firefox are mainly in terms of privacy and security. Might sound stupid but I read somewhere a while back (sorry, can't remember the source) that Google Chrome has a ton of trackers built in to the browser itself, aside from the one's websites use on their own. I'm asking only in terms of the "stock browsers", no third party plug-ins to block tracking, etc. Mainly focused on Firefox and Chrome (and Edge, kinda), but I'd be glad to hear about any other browsers. I referred to a few articles before this (linked below) but they didn't go into too much detail so if anyone has any additional information it would be great. PCWorld Article TNHONLINE Article Hope the question makes sense, it's my first time here.
  24. WTH is wrong with google image

Something is wrong with Google image. It display like this for 3 weeks now. I checked and there's no malware and I use ethernet. Can someone explain why this happen and how to fix it?
  25. Basically, PragerU, a non-profit conservative organization is suing Google for their content being blocked by Youtube in its "Restricted Mode," Citing that it infringes on their freedom of speech from the 1st US amendment. Their videos are also demonetized though to a extent I do not know. The demonetization could simply be missed revenue by having it not show up for the lost viewership. I think this is relevant because Internet censorship is something we should all be extremely interested in and if its happening, should respond to appropriately.
