PayPal Problem - Some payments not going through   20 May 2017

PayPal appears to be experiencing problems at the moment, resulting in people being billed but the transaction showing as failed on our end. If you have signed up for a new subscription, and the transaction is showing as pending on the forum, so you haven't gained floatplane access yet, and you have waited more than 10 minutes after purchasing it in PayPal, please go to https://linustechtips.com/main/failed_transaction_fix.php and follow the instructions. If you have any issues, please send me a PM (hover over my picture or username and click "message"), including the transaction ID, and I will try and sort it out for you.

  1. Revealed: Google tried to block media coverage of gender discrimination case https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/may/22/google-gender-discrimination-case-reporting-restricted?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Copy_to_clipboard
  2. This is the 1st time I am unable to install something from google.... Did anyone have similar issue before?
  3. One the biggest stories to come out of Google I/O this week it that Google Assistant is now on iOS. Google is attempting to widen their ecosystem and devices that can use its Assistant. Google putting their Assistant on the iPhone is their direct attempt to compete with Siri and Apple's ecosystem. Siri vs Google Assistant Access One of the main advantages of Siri is its ability to launch anywhere in iOS with a hold of the home button. However Google has done their best to combat this. They've made it possible to access through a widget on the home and lock screen. And through 3D Touch. Integration Because of Apple's highly controlled iOS there is only so much that Apple allows the Assistant to do. Simple tasks like volume up, down, and playing music work well with both Siri and Assistant. However some basic and highly used Siri features can't be accomplish in Assistant. Things like turning on low power mode, setting the system alarm clock, and controlling home kit devices. However Assistants use and access of smart home products like Phillips hue and Logitech Harmony give it an upper hand in the smart home department. One of the big features of Google Assistant on iPhone is not even available yet on Android which is an interesting move. The feature is the ability to just talk to assistant though text instead of voice. After looking though the similarities and differences in my opinion Siri is currently better that Google Assistant on iPhone, but not by much. If there weren't hardware limitations than Assistant would be my go to voice AI. However its is clear that google is putting a lot of effort into AI and that work is showing in Assistant. If Google is able to put in new features that overcome the ability to not control the iPhones hardware than it would be a much better option than Siri. If all of this is uncertain, than one thing that is clear is Google is continuing its attempt at world domination by releasing another app made by them with there logos that you put on your iPhone's screen. Interesting Side Note: If you search for Google Assistant on the iOS App Store for what ever reason it shows up really low in the search results. Its first result it Google Allo and then other not very common Google Apps. The Verge: How does Google Assistant stack up against Siri on an iPhone?: https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/19/15655558/google-assistant-vs-siri-iphone-ios-apple-locked-down-sandbox
  4. I saw this article and thought it was kind of funny... According to a ruling in a US Federal Appeals court, Google will be allowed to keep the trademark to the name Google. Apparently at issue is whether the term google has become so predominate in usage that it would preclude you from having a search engine without using the term 'googling' to describe a search. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/05/genericide-assault-to-nullify-the-google-trademark-fails/ I guess this could be considered good news for Microsoft as they now have no chance of worrying about losing a trademark for Bing. EDIT: I've added a poll for those interested...
  5. https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/18/15660218/google-seurat-daydream-mobile-vr-rendering-star-wars-io-2017 This looks absolutely fantastic. It basically allows developers to define a space where the user can move around and interact with a scene from, then the program will calculate all necessary viewpoints in the scene. This allows the number of polygons to be reduced by 1000x and the textures by 300x with no perceptible loss of quality. The video above demonstrates a scene that took an ILM render farm 1 hour per frame to complete takes only 13ms on a Snapdragon 835 based chip. This could radically change the story driven semi on-the-rails narratives for mobile VR platforms. Even games would benefit from this as interactivity is preserved. Combined with the work that Google is doing with mobile neural nets and Nvidia's Neural Net Raytracing speedup we could be looking at a huge leap in graphical fidelity in mobile platforms. (RIP Imagination's bet on mobile raytracing) Visualisation of how the tech works (user constraints shown as a blue cube): https://im2.ezgif.com/tmp/ezgif-2-f428ceca5c.webm cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/8538153/Seurat_Part3_v003_H264_3.gif
  6. Helolo everyone! So this is my problem. I was watching some youtube videos and everything was working fine......when SUDDENLY. Youtube is playing very low audio, and I can bearly hear the youtube video......but I do hear some music playing over it??!! I really don't know how to explain, so I attached a vid. Is this a virus? 7. In a small update Google has release for Google Maps for android, when displaying a set of instructions Users can now get a street view of every road your supposed to turn on to. In a quote from the Verge: "It’s a small change, but it could make a difference at confusing intersections or for people (like me) who are very bad with street names. The change was spotted by Android Police." The function only displays thumbnails to tap into and it not quite something to use in a car. For now, Its only available for Android but iOS should get it soon. Original Article from the Verge: https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/12/15629756/google-maps-street-view-directions-ui-change
  8. Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this issue on google chrome where the back button, forward button, reload button and settings button have all disappeared from the top row of the browser window? If I click where they would be they still functions as normal but they just disappeared, I have no idea as to why but I'll attach a screenshot below:
  9. As people who have and/or use devices with Android OS can attest, Google has a notoriously bad reputation with updates to their OS. In a bid to improve this scenario, Google is introducing Project Treble, which is supposed to help modularize the Android OS and separate out the OS framework code from vendor specific hardware code. According to Ars Technica: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/05/google-hopes-to-fix-android-updates-no-really-with-project-treble/ From the way that this sounds, Google would just have to provide the Android OS framework and then it would only need to pass the Vendor Test Suite prior to vendors being able to pass it out to devices. Of course, this doesn't fix the issue of all the little stuff that vendors build on top of Android or the bloatware that carriers place on it either, but if this can take some of the Vendor work out of the equation, maybe we can see some more frequent updates over the Android update life-cycle. Also, I still wouldn't count on vendors to push out updates for more than 2-years just so that they can try to sell you a new device.
  10. Recently I've fixed up my father's broken Google Nexus 5 to replace my unstable dieing Samsung galaxy S4, one huge disappointing factor now is the display. As sharp as it is, it's not on par with my Galaxy in terms of vibrancy and color accuracy. Does anyone know a good way to calibrate or fine tune display colors on Android?
  11. It appears that a UI is beginning to take shape for a future version of a Google OS that will completely dump the Linux Kernel. Ars Technica has some more information on Google's Fuschia OS, which is being built on top of their Magenta microkernel. According to Ars Technica: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/05/googles-fuchsia-smartphone-os-dumps-linux-has-a-wild-new-ui/ So this seems like a really big, long term project, if Google carries it through to completion, however, this might actually improve the experience of running cross-platform and make for a more stable, more easily maintained and updated environment for a Google OS in the long run... As Ars point out, this may be a way for Google to fix some of the issues with Android: So who actually wants this to progress and actually see the light of day? Does anyone think that Google will actually continue to work on this to build a full OS replacement for Chrome OS and Android or will it be used more as a supplement to write cross-platform apps? http://techreport.com/news/31866/google-fuchsia-os-runs-on-a-little-bit-of-magenta
  12. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/05/googles-fuchsia-smartphone-os-dumps-linux-has-a-wild-new-ui/ While article show cases Google's new OS's UI, it's probably important to note what it exactly is. Google's making a new mobile OS called Fuchsia, based on a ground-up built kernel called Magenta (i.e., it's not Linux based). The reason for doing this is that Android is held up by decisions made a long time ago before anyone knew how to do a smartphone OS. It's Google answering the question of "If we could do Android today, how would we do it?" It also allows them to remove themselves from the Linux distro line, which has its own problems. So in some sense, Google is going the Apple route by doing everything it wants to do rather than rely on anyone else or decisions made in the past. The good news for those FOSS people is that Google is licensing Fuchsia under a combination of BSD3, MIT, and Apache 2.0. Which makes me wonder if they'll expand Magenta to take over not only Android, but Chrome OS. Given that Google has a significant footprint in personal computers, could this be a breath of fresh air for a new OS? Part of me is excited to see where this'll go.
  13. In an event that was over very shortly after it began, an email phishing scheme that would request access to your Google Docs, then rip out all of your contacts to replicate itself was swiftly dealt with after a Google staff member noticed a trending topic on the Google reddit thread. From Ars Technica: https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/05/google-docs-phish-worm-grabs-your-google-app-permissions-contacts/ As for how this issue was resolved, Bleeping Computers Article: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/it-took-google-one-hour-to-shut-down-massive-self-replicating-phishing-campaign/ There are no reports that malware was deployed in the phishing attack. Cloudflare was also quick to take down all the domains associated with the phishing attack. Users that clicked on the button inside the phishing email can go to the https://myaccount.google.com/permissions page and see if they granted the app permission to access their account. The real Google Docs isn't listed in this section, as it does not need permissions, being an official Google property. It is good to see that Google's security team was quick to annihilate this worm as opposed to allowing it to roam in the wild for any length of time. UPDATE: In an update on the security vulnerabilities used to create the malicious phishing script, it appears that this type attack may have been known about since late 2011 and that there may not be anything in place to prevent this kind of attack in the future... Ars Technica has provided a bit more information on how the attack was accomplished and how the fact that Google's own authentication API doesn't provide a way to make it clear the applications author is not associated with Google may also be partially to blame. In addition, some of the ideas and scripting behind this attack may have been inspired by a security researchers blog post in February to try and raise awareness of this security vulnerability... https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/05/google-phishing-attack-was-foretold-by-researchers-and-it-may-have-used-their-code/ This seems like a fairly serious issue that Google is going to need to figure out a long-term fix for concerning OAuth attacks mimicking Google authorization...
  14. So I have been using and liking the new look and dark mode of Youtube This morning I fired up my PC, at about 10:00AM local time (GMT +08:00) Issue persists till now; Youtube is telling me that the preview for the new site layout has been removed... Tried on Chrome version 58, Firefox version 53, latest version of Vivaldi (which is Chromium based) Methods to get the option available (by manually adding a site cookie) seem to no longer work. Yes the 'Test new features" option is at the bottom of the page. I get the above message when trying to enable the new look. Anyone else encountering this? I'd really like to have the dark mode back. Prefer not having to rely on addons If there is a new workaround do let me know
  15. I'm sort of in charge of the tech stuff for my school's journalism staffs, and I've been trying to figure out for a while how best to go about live syncing many gigabytes of files between multiple computers in different locations. Google Drive Sync, which we've been using this year, is THEORETICALLY the perfect solution, because we store the files on the cloud and they sync in (mostly) real time to every PC running the application in the background. There are a couple of issues with this: 1. The lack of a backup. Someone could break into our Google account and delete and entire year's worth of work. 2. It doesn't really work very well. Files sync correctly probably 90% of the time, which turns into a big issue when we have about 40GB of Adobe project files. Often times the program on one person's computer will simply refuse to sync a certain folder containing stuff they need to work on, and they have to hand it over to me so I can delete everything, reinstall the program and then wait for it to download 40GB of files. This all isn't even considering the fact that we have 40GB of synced files, but almost 800GB of files on the cloud in total (most of what isn't synced is our enormous photo library and old archives). My adviser pays quite a bit per month for unlimited Google drive storage for this purpose. I haven't found a better solution for this. It's a public school with all sorts of restrictive nonsense in terms of the local network so a physical server is not an option. Thanks so much to anyone who even reads through this mess let alone has a response
  16. So for a while now my chrome has bin freezing from time to time. I tried looking it up but couldnt excactly find my problem. Most of the times it freezes when i have one game loading on my main monitor and i try to pause/play/load a video on the other one. It also freezes sometime when i skip trough a video "too fast". Most of the times the page will unfreeze after a few seconds and then the video screen would be green. A quick refresh fixes it but the freezing is really annoying. It also freezes sometimes when just opening a new page while i have a game on my main monitor.
  17. So with Windows 10 updating Cortana is starting to get more and more useful to the point where I didn't disable it when I reinstalled Windows. The one thing that annoyed me the most though was that it forced you to search with Bing on Microsoft Edge. Unsurprising, but still annoying. Anyway there's a way to get around this and search using the browser and search engine of your choice. Step 1: Download SearchWithMyBrowser from their github page and go through the install process. Step 2: Ask Cortana to search something, instead of bringing up Edge, it should bring up a popup that asks you how to open it, click SearchWithMyBrowser and it should open using your default browser. Step 3: So at this step, Cortana still searches with Bing, in order to change that get Chrometana for any Chromium based browser (Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera, etc), with Firefox, it should already be searching with your preferred search engine. So that's it, I hope you guys found this useful!
  18. Hello! I have a Lenovo Y700 15ACZ Gaming Laptop! I recently installed Chrome (with no existing extensions) to see if it can replace Firefox. Everything was going well until I tried watching 60fps video on YouTube. I checked task manager to find that my system was at 60-90% CPU usage while watching those videos! I tried searching around some forums to try and fix this issue. For example: I downloaded the h264ify extension, went into incognito mode, cleared everything, disabled hardware acceleration, reinstalled Chrome, and scanned for viruses and malware. I did a test with the same video quality in Firefox as well, and Firefox only plays videos at 20-30%. What do I do to fix this? I really like some of Chrome's features, but it's a shame I can't do simple tasks without running into issues! Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  19. In a bid to help combat fake news items, Google implemented an algorithm back in October on it's News search site to show which News Articles had been checked against a 'fact-check' source. Now though, Google is rolling this out across their complete web search engine. According to the Tech Crunch article: https://techcrunch.com/2017/04/07/fact-check-the-world-is-flat/ Of course, this being Google, the question about how these are conducted and what about a disagreement in facts. From Tech Crunch again: BBC Article: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-39527644 I haven't seen this pop up on any of my Google Searches yet, but keep an eye out. Of course, I still recommend people to question the search results and try to apply some critical thinking to anything you come across. EDIT: To add on to how this is apparently working, Ars Technica did an article where apparently the search criteria right now to show these results are an often repeated claim. https://arstechnica.com/business/2017/04/google-expands-automatic-fact-check-insertion-into-search-results/ Google's automation is only combing certain data and research sites and the data must be put forth using the "Share the Facts' widget or with Schema.org ClaimReview markup. Google's algorithm then determines whether the source is authoritative using: https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/4582731#fact-checking I'm thinking that there will probably be a lot of room for algorithm improvements as this system develops. As stated above though, critical thinking still should be applied to any article that you read online.
  20. So about 8-9 months ago there were reports from people that google maps was starting to show the speed limits on the roads they were driving, a seriously overdue feature as such things have been on dedicated GPS and competing GPS apps for years. It has been months since the first reports came out and so far neither me or anyone I know has had google maps start showing a speed limit indicator. Did google just quietly kill this feature or is it something that is still slowly being rolled out?
  21. source: http://paxlicense.org/ via: http://www.androidauthority.com/google-introduces-pax-patent-licensing-761408/ maybe this will also put an end to the Android market fragmentation!? who knows ... wishful thinking similar endeavors: Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge https://www.google.com/patents/opnpledge/ LOT Network http://lotnet.com/
  22. Source: CNET *bitch please 🙄 But nonetheless this doesn't surprise me at all. You can buy an Android phone for as low as $50 nowadays and get connected to the internet via wifi or cellular data whereas a Windows PC costs more. But it should be kept in mind that the stats only includes internet connected devices, not the ones that are used offline like cashiers or at kiosks. OS X seems to be in a plateau and iOS is growing but slowly and not on the same pace as Android. The comparison is apples to oranges in my opinion but it won't surprise me if in tue next few years people especially not the enthusiast section will buy computers running Android instead of Windows especially if Google plans to merge Chrome OS and Android.
  23. So, I don't know how, I didn't even downloaded anything but still I have a virus/malware of google custom search, where whenever I try to search something on goole, it redirects to cse.google.com which is annoying and also the results are sorted and crap. I tried Malwarebytes I tried clearing temp I tried clearing chrome with ccleaner.
  24. Today, Google announces that it will offer faster Android security patches later this year. However, it admitted that about half of all Android devices that were in use by the end of 2016 did not get a security update in the previous year. Source: http://www.androidauthority.com/android-security-updates-2017-758750/ Hopefully this starts to roll out to older devices not just this years' devices, just as my One M8 is chugging along perfectly fine, but it's just a bit frustrating that it's security patch is december 2015, almost 2 months before the update was released, and it's more and more concerning, after the leaks of the CIA and GCHQ tools they use to exploit android devices. Device manufacturers need to held accountable for not released security updates to their devices as people trust them with their financial and personal information, and some don't even offer a single update after releasing a device.
  25. http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/21/14990876/google-android-o-8-update-developer-preview-release-battery-life-notifications-api Developer preview can be found here: https://developer.android.com/preview/index.html From the Google developer page: From the verge: Battery life Notification Channels Picture in Picture Autofill Adaptive Icons Miscellaneous Extras Thoughts: Looks pretty cool, lots of interesting new stuff as Google looks to be laying the groudwork for a merge between ChromeOS and Android. I'm especially excited about the wide colour gamut support and battery life push. Hopefully this means more apps will take advantage of some of the incredible screens out there and solve many of the 'Android OS' battery drain issues. I've probably missed stuff, let me know if you spot anything and I'll add it to the OP.
