  1. The Commission has reportedly been investigating Google since 2010, as result of complaints made by Microsoft and others. While this is a good step to creating a fairer internet for businesses, the fine is of course very small for the monster of alphabet, which has $172bn of assets. 2. Hi everyone, so I have had this problem of my screen turning black every time a YouTube video loaded or certain elements on other websites and the solution to that turned out to be turning off hardware acceleration. So I turned it off, but it turned out that when I do that I get screen tearing. It's horizontal screen tearing and it's most noticeable in YouTube videos where things move up or down at a high speed, but it can also be seen when things go sideways, just not as much. It's painful to watch and the only way to fix it that I know of is to turn hardware acceleration on, which in turn introduces the horrible black screen problem... I have a GTX 970 Strix btw. I've already tried multiple ways to fix this, which have all failed: - Turned on VSync in NVIDIA settings - Turned it off again and on again and restarted the browser - Turned off smooth scrolling - Used D3DOverrider - Turned on Triple buffering in NVIDIA settings - Messed with framerates of my monitor - Reseated the HDMI cable in both the monitor and GPU - Downloaded the smoothscrolling addon - Update my graphics driver - Update my browser - Tried Edge and Firefox, but I don't wanna switch because I've used chrome for so long I don't wanna have to go and switch So much thanks in advance if anyone can help me.
  3. Hi! I'm trying to make a spreadsheet to organize a raffle for a guild in an MMO. I've never used Google Sheets before so I'm very confused and need help. All I want to do is take the value in row X, column C, divide it by 500, and output that value to column D. I then want to divide the value in column row X column c by 1500 and output that value to column E. I'm sure there's a simple way to do this but I don't know how. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
  4. Whilst dragging the google chrome window between anywhere on a single monitor or across my two monitors it lags horrible and stutters. I have a 980Ti, 6700k, 32gb of ram. It happens with no intensive apps running and just one window. I am pretty sure chrome is on my SSD and if not is on my fast HDD's in raid 0 for added speed. I tried googling a google issue but google wouldn't google a googled answer...... aka, found nothing. I tried using chromium because that is a much lighter version. Anyways, if anybody knows how to fix that, it would be awesome. I figure it would be a good idea to post my addons: AdBlock App Launcher for drive Authy Authy chrome extension better tv chrome remote desktop hide most visited pages reloaded speedtest by ookla teamviewer (yes, I know, redundant) webroot filtering extension
  5. Where can I get it safely if I do not have access to it in my European Google play store? o3o
  6. Google has been found guilty of antitrust behavior over the way it promoted its own shopping services over that of competitors, reports the Financial Times. This is one of three separate European investigations into the legality of the company’s trading practices. The paper says that a formal announcement will be made ‘in the coming weeks,’ and that the search giant will be fined a billion Euros ($1.12B) by the European Commission … The accusation was that when you search for a product on Google, the link to the product on Google Shopping is more prominent than those to other price-comparison websites. The EC has apparently now found the case proven, and will levy the fine. It is also likely to insist that Google rectify the problem by downgrading the visibility of Google Shopping links. Google argued that online shopping was ‘robustly competitive’ and that Amazon was by far the most dominant player in the marketplace. As Business Insider notes, Google pointed to the fact that around a third of product searches are conducted on Amazon, against 14.3% on Google. The EC has seemingly rejected this defence. The reputed fine is significantly less than the maximum possible. EU rules provide for a maximum antitrust fine of 10% of a company’s annual revenue, which would be around $7.6B. The decision is likely to raise the same kind of split views seen when the EU concluded that Ireland had offered illegal state aid to Apple through a sweetheart tax deal, rendering the company liable to pay €13B ($14.5B) in back taxes. It’s almost certain that Google will appeal the ruling to the European Court of Justice, a process which some say may take several years. Separate investigations continue into whether Google forces manufacturers of Android devices to favor the company’s own apps, and whether it abuses its dominance in ad sales by making it harder for advertisers to buy from rival ad networks. Via: https://9to5google.com/2017/06/16/google-antitrust-outcome-eu-europe That's a lot of money! They'll appeal the case obviously, but I reckon they're going to end up paying that 1 billion.
  7. I have Two-Step verification disabled for my google account. In fact, it's never been set up. Today, I tried to log into Nvidia's Geforce Experience on a different computer (a different google account was used at one point). I correctly used my pass, etc.. Google's sign in has prompted me to "Verify its you", and its forcing me to provide a phone number to receive a verification code. There is no way to continue without doing this that is apparent to me. Is there a way to disable this sort of thing from happening/continue without having a phone? Again, I don't want to ever have to use Two-Step with google right now, I've never used it before, and I don't particularly like that its asking for a phone number when I used the correct password. Tried to search for how to get around this, but all I can find is "how to disable Two-Step verification"; it is already disabled. Also how is it secure to ask for a phone number when you suspect the person isn't who they say you are? Couldn't an attacker or whatever just provide a burner phone number to receive the verification code? How does this really prove its who I am when it could be any phone number?

  10. Google may been working to design custom SOC's for future mobile devices. A recent hire at Google indicates big changes are coming for future versions of the Pixel phone. It seems that google may have just hired the ex-apple micro-architect, Manu Gulati, who worked on the development of apples SOC's for nearly eight years. this is a completely new path for google as they what do you guys think? will google be able to utilize the knowledge of an ex-apple employee and leap-frog apple in terms of performance? Where do you think google will start, in the creation of SOC's? 13. More great news for the LTT team and their Canadian brethren. Google might be acknowledging that your 1) a first world country, 2) Located in North America, 3) A key partner in NAFTA and NATO. Don't worry, those US citizens not in the bay area are forgotten at times too (YouTube TV!!!) Announcement: https://canada.googleblog.com/2017/06/google-home-is-coming-to-canada.html Apparently, the delay was because of all your baguette-eating citizens in Quebec, eh! Congratulations and welcome to the G world! That is until the next time Google forgets about users again in pursuit of robots, AI, or something else shiny.
  14. I am trying to start google chrome with a power shell script but everything that i have tried has not worked. An example of what I have tried is: Start-Process -FilePath "C:\Program Files(x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome" -ArgumentList '--start-maximized' This however throws the error that it can't find the specified application even though it is the default install location and I have checked multiple times that it is correct. I want it to also start so that it full-screens the tab (usually done by pressing f11)
  15. Original article from Engadget. Google refuses to hand over employee income records. Explaining that it would cost too much and require too much time. Raising suspicions about a disparity in men and women's pay.
  16. Does anyone know if there's an easy way to transfer specific things from one Google account to another? I'm looking to move all of the photos and contacts saved on one account to another.
  17. Original Article: https://futurism.com/googles-new-ai-is-better-at-creating-ai-than-the-companys-engineers/ Essentially, Google have created an AI powerful enough that it can create better versions of itself, which in turn can create better versions of itself etc. This is essentially the first steps towards the singularity, an AI more powerful than humans that could out-think us and destroy us should it wish. Currently, it exists only as Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), but due to the layering, this could soon progress to AGI (artificial general intelligence) and ASI (artificial super intelligence), as each AI becomes progressively better at coding AI. EDIT: Here's a good video that explains some of the consequences of ASI:
  18. This is a bit of a follow-up to an article published earlier by @hey_yo_ (linked below) concerning the Windows Defender exploit that a Google Expert found as well as a really neat tool for anyone who is interested. So, as the original article talks about, a Google Expert (Tavis Ormandy) had found an exploit in Windows Defender that could be used to spread malicious code and Microsoft released a patch shortly after. Now, Mr. Ormandy has released the tool that he used to find this exploit on Github. The tool, called Loadlibrary, is created to allow the running of Windows Dynamic Link Library's (DLLs) on Linux, specifically in order to be able to fuzz them in order to find bugs. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/software/google-expert-ports-windows-defender-to-linux-to-showcase-new-tool/ Basically this tool removes the requirement to try and fuzz the Windows tool through a VM or other container in order to find issues. Just to be clear though, Mr. Ormandy says that this tool is not intended as a way to run Windows Apps on Linux and is not intended to replace Wine or Winelib. Still, it is really neat that researchers can use this to port specific DLL data into a Linux app and not need to worry about all the other Windows app parts.
  19. In a 'How can this possibly go wrong?' kind of way, Google at their annual Marketing Next conference has announced their new Google Attribution system to help advertisers figure out if their marketing is truly working. Basically Google will be using a combination of machine learning on data that it has collected and data from 'third-party partnerships, which capture approximately 70% of credit and debit card transactions in the United States' to model whether an ad is truly getting you to do out and buy a product. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/google/google-will-track-your-offline-credit-card-payments-to-make-advertisers-happy/ Seems like Google may be really bending that whole 'Don't Be Evil' thing on this one here. I know that all of this data will be collected no matter what I do (unless I destroy my computer, withdraw all the money from the bank and work in cash only), but aggregating this data to target ads better is kind of a creepy move, especially considering how some fourth party may want to collect this processed (or non-processed) data for their own purposes...

  22. One the biggest stories to come out of Google I/O this week it that Google Assistant is now on iOS. Google is attempting to widen their ecosystem and devices that can use its Assistant. Google putting their Assistant on the iPhone is their direct attempt to compete with Siri and Apple's ecosystem. Siri vs Google Assistant Access One of the main advantages of Siri is its ability to launch anywhere in iOS with a hold of the home button. However Google has done their best to combat this. They've made it possible to access through a widget on the home and lock screen. And through 3D Touch. Integration Because of Apple's highly controlled iOS there is only so much that Apple allows the Assistant to do. Simple tasks like volume up, down, and playing music work well with both Siri and Assistant. However some basic and highly used Siri features can't be accomplish in Assistant. Things like turning on low power mode, setting the system alarm clock, and controlling home kit devices. However Assistants use and access of smart home products like Phillips hue and Logitech Harmony give it an upper hand in the smart home department. One of the big features of Google Assistant on iPhone is not even available yet on Android which is an interesting move. The feature is the ability to just talk to assistant though text instead of voice. After looking though the similarities and differences in my opinion Siri is currently better that Google Assistant on iPhone, but not by much. If there weren't hardware limitations than Assistant would be my go to voice AI. However its is clear that google is putting a lot of effort into AI and that work is showing in Assistant. If Google is able to put in new features that overcome the ability to not control the iPhones hardware than it would be a much better option than Siri. If all of this is uncertain, than one thing that is clear is Google is continuing its attempt at world domination by releasing another app made by them with there logos that you put on your iPhone's screen. Interesting Side Note: If you search for Google Assistant on the iOS App Store for what ever reason it shows up really low in the search results. Its first result it Google Allo and then other not very common Google Apps. The Verge: How does Google Assistant stack up against Siri on an iPhone?: https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/19/15655558/google-assistant-vs-siri-iphone-ios-apple-locked-down-sandbox
  23. I saw this article and thought it was kind of funny... According to a ruling in a US Federal Appeals court, Google will be allowed to keep the trademark to the name Google. Apparently at issue is whether the term google has become so predominate in usage that it would preclude you from having a search engine without using the term 'googling' to describe a search. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/05/genericide-assault-to-nullify-the-google-trademark-fails/ I guess this could be considered good news for Microsoft as they now have no chance of worrying about losing a trademark for Bing. EDIT: I've added a poll for those interested...
  24. https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/18/15660218/google-seurat-daydream-mobile-vr-rendering-star-wars-io-2017 This looks absolutely fantastic. It basically allows developers to define a space where the user can move around and interact with a scene from, then the program will calculate all necessary viewpoints in the scene. This allows the number of polygons to be reduced by 1000x and the textures by 300x with no perceptible loss of quality. The video above demonstrates a scene that took an ILM render farm 1 hour per frame to complete takes only 13ms on a Snapdragon 835 based chip. This could radically change the story driven semi on-the-rails narratives for mobile VR platforms. Even games would benefit from this as interactivity is preserved. Combined with the work that Google is doing with mobile neural nets and Nvidia's Neural Net Raytracing speedup we could be looking at a huge leap in graphical fidelity in mobile platforms. (RIP Imagination's bet on mobile raytracing) Visualisation of how the tech works (user constraints shown as a blue cube): https://im2.ezgif.com/tmp/ezgif-2-f428ceca5c.webm cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/8538153/Seurat_Part3_v003_H264_3.gif
