  1. Right so I really don't know what's going on so some of you might be able to help me or verify this. I started using FFQ when it got hyped and launched, and it was great! No crashes, no slowdowns, everything was just as I expected. But fast forward to last month I've started noticing lags when searching anything on google and shrugged it off. Now, its down to the point where "Google.com" loads up, but if I type anything in the search bar on the website or the URL bar, it just keeps loading, and takes about at least 45 seconds to produce the results page, I've tried to compare it to chrome and as expected, chrome dished out web pages almost instantly. I have tried clearing cache, deleting all plugins, deleting history etc (because someone said that Firefox chokes up if you browse too much? what?!) And even to the point of MULTIPLE clean re-installations, but the problem persists. (yes im on the most recent version of Firefox, since it likes to update automatically anyway.) Honestly, I'm just thinking of switching back to chrome, its not like FFQ isn't stable for me, but I really don't want to wait forever for my web pages to load. Have you guys experienced similar situations, if so have you found a fix that's not already mentioned above?
  2. This is great news for people waiting to get a Google Home or Pixel phone! However, there are always the odd ones out... But this is still amazing news. Google has announced at the DNI summit that Google Assistant will become available for Western Europe in 2018 at the DNI Summit in Amsterdam. This was shown on a slide during the summit that showed planned availability for the Google Assistant in 2018. The Map showed that the support for the assistant as planned for 2018 will be in or coming to: North America Middle America South America Western Europe Russia Saudi Arabia India and more... With this the supported languages for the Google assistant will almost triple from the current 8 supported languages. Tweakers.net heard that the support for the Dutch language will be released in the first quarter of 2018. Sources: https://tweakers.net/nieuws/135299/google-brengt-assistant-in-2018-uit-in-nederland-en-belgie.html (Dutch tech news site) https://www.androidcentral.com/google-assistant-will-expand-38-countries-and-17-languages-2018-0
  3. My google pixel 1 just stopped working so I went looking for a new phone to find that none of them really seem worth it. They all have one huge drawback whether it is being too big, no headphone jack, or using touchwiz. I'm leaning more towards iphones because I've never had one but it doesnt seem like the iphone x or the 8 are worth.
  4. The news is pretty short (and sweet): Article from Ars Technica In short, HTC sold a majority of its phone division to Google for a little more than a billion dollars. Google officially announced the deal's closure (completion) today. Google wants HTC mobile employees to augment their existing mobile division. Both the Google Pixel (Standard and XL) and Google Pixel 2 were a collaborative effort between Google's mobile team and HTC. The article states that by purchasing part of HTC, Google wants to improved control in the design process and more unity between the pixel phones. In other words, Google wants to be more independent from third-parties. They don't want to rely on companies like HTC (and LG) to design and manufacture their phones. So why did HTC sell such a large portion of their company? HTC is hemorrhaging money. Their mobile division has had a couple big flops with the HTC One M9 and especially the HTC U Ultra. As a former HTC One M8 owner and a current Google Pixel 2 user, I'm extremely excited about this deal. I don't know if it will help Google improve the quality of their phones, but it at least implies that Google will continue the Pixel series. Maybe Google will even be able to compete with the Samsung Galaxy and IPhone (in market share) in a couple years...

I'd like to ask if the Airport Express is the device I am looking for and if there is anything cheaper available from apple that contains the required functionality? Thank you for your help

  9. My mom just bought a Pixel 2 XL, brand new from Verizon with a little promo they were having. My mom is not tech savvy at all, and even she was noticing that it is taking absurdly long to charge. The Pixel displays "Rapidly Charging" on the screen, however the estimated charging time from 10% to 100% is 8+ hours, and takes pretty much that entire time to charge. A modern smartphone should not still be charging after a normal night's sleep. Yes, I have tried multiple different chargers, outlets, and car chargers, all of which are fast charge compatible, and they also quick charge my S8+. Clearly this is an issue with the phone. Is there a setting or something that I am missing, or should I contact google support?

Whenever I restart or turn my PC on from a shut down, Google Chrome always starts up with it and starts playing whatever YouTube video I had open in Chrome when I shut it down before I've even logged into my account! This is really annoying, and Chrome isn't in the startup list in Task Manager - definitely not. Any help would be greatly appreciated
  12. Twitter employees reveal in Veritas' undercover videos that Twitter uses both algorithm-based data detection and sorting, and also uses teams of people to sift through Twitter users' personal DMs, view their private sexual pictures, etc, to create a unique personal virtual profile of each Twitter user, that Twitter then sells to advertisers. https://www.projectveritas.com/2018/01/15/hidden-camera-hundreds-of-twitter-employees-paid-to-view-everything-you-post-online-including-private-sex-messages/ Twitter software engineer, Mihai Florea: Clay Haynes: The details provided in the video from Twitter employees also serve to give good warning and insight into what Microsoft does with the personal data it collects from Windows 10 owners. Just as the Dutch DPA investigation reported, all of the data that Microsoft collects through Windows 10 is personal, and none of it is anonymous, with all of it having multiple IDs to tie the data to the system, user, applications, device usage, location, Windows version, etc, that form a unique fingerprint for the person that the data came from. And that information is likewise used to create a virtual profile of each Windows 10 user, which is sold to advertisers, researchers, shared with government and law enforcement, etc And, of course, this is why Microsoft was offering a "free" update to Windows 10, why Microsoft left so many loopholes to continue accessing the "free" update to Windows 10 after the "free" period officially ended, and why Microsoft forced and tricked millions of people to get Windows 10 to install their PCs. The "free" offer was a sleight of hand move, not for Windows owners, but for Microsoft, who wants to be making as much perpetual data-based money as possible, from each person who hooks into Microsoft's massive data-theft farm. What is the point of rights to privacy rules in society, which corporations, and anything they choose to share your personal data with, for their personal profit, consider themselves exempt from, and behave outside of personal rights to privacy, and privacy rules and policies? Also, what do these people who look at personal information, whether at Twitter, Microsoft, Facebook, or Google, do, when they come across sensitive corporate information, or information or ideas that could make their own company a lot of money, if they were to pick them up? It's obviously possible, and maybe very likely, that they just then steal those ideas. Facebook at least tries to figure out new ideas based on user usage of their devices (as Microsoft, and other big-data companies no doubt also do): https://www.fastcompany.com/40451455/facebook-is-spying-on-your-phone-habits-to-figure-out-which-ideas-to-steal-next I figure that it must be a risk for any major company to use software by Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, Google, etc.
  13. Hi, Just been trying to fix the dreaded 100% disk usage bug on my laptop. I've tried numerous fixes online and still cant determine the cause. I've also reinstalled windows 10 twice and keeps happening. Any help on this would be great. Cheers.
  14. First, the article: https://www.polygon.com/2018/1/10/16871562/logan-paul-youtube-red-thinning Many of you heard about Logan Paul's video of his visit to the Suicide Forest in Japan. In this video, he filmed and laughed at a suicide victim who had hung himself, which is disrespectful beyond belief. As I would've expected, Logan Paul was met with severe backlash for this video, which he eventually took down. Later on, Logan provided a slew of apologies for his video, not all of which seemed sincere, and YouTube was slow to condemn his actions. Many of us expressed disgust regarding YouTube's slow response and lack of disciplinary action, but guess what? YouTube has now done some things about this! I didn't like YouTube's slow response, either, but better late than never! Thus far, I'm seeing a lot of similarities between Logan's punishment and PewDiePie's punishment for the one anti-Semitic video he put out last February. Speaking of which... "The man has a point," the guys at YouTube headquarters mumble to each other. It doesn't sound like Logan Paul is getting fully demonitized yet, but I hope things are headed in that direction. Bottom line is that the video was an abomination that made Google look bad, YouTube look worse, and Logan Paul look absolutely despicable. And God knows how many kids watched that video! Ugh! (Mods...posting guidelines...did I do it right?)
  15. Emails reveal extent of Google's toxic work culture Source: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11972830 "Employees at Google used internal company message boards to advocate political violence, recruit for a hard-line left-wing activist group and even propose public "trials" for ideological opponents, documents filed in court suggest. The nearly 100 pages of internal emails and message board postings are contained in a class-action lawsuit filed by former employee James Damore in California on Monday, accusing Google of discriminating against white people, men and conservatives. Damore was the author of a controversial internal memo criticising the tech giant's "politically correct" diversity policies. He was sacked last year for "perpetuating gender stereotypes" after the memo was leaked to the media and went viral. Screenshots of messages attached to the complaint show Google employees attacking conservatives and white people, advocating political violence and even sharing "how-to" guides to join Antifa, a violent left-wing anarchist group reportedly classified as "domestic terrorists" by US Homeland Security." - News.com.au's Frank Chung The article is full of extracts from the message boards, some of which are very sickening to read. I'm sure some of you here, since this is a tech forum, can shed some light on this. Its pretty disturbing to read this, especially from a company which prides itself on strong ethics. This type of discussion really does not have a place anywhere, especially in the workplace.
  16. PHONES

so im getting a new phone and i cant decide so you say whats the best phone ?
  17. So I’ve narrowed down my choice of phone to either the Razer phone or the Pixel 2 XL from Google. My situation now is quite a tricky one but I’m definitely being swayed one way. Here are the options: 1) Stay with my current carrier (Three) and enter a 2 year contract to get the Razer phone which is exclusive to Three in the UK unless I buy it unlocked elsewhere. This will increase my current monthly bill by £22. 2) Switch carriers to EE and enter a 2 year contract to get the Pixel 2 XL which will increase my monthly bill by £27. 3) Buy either phone unlocked from a separate seller which will increase my monthly bill (due to financing the phone) by over £30 but will also maintain my ability to leave my current carrier (if I want to in the future) as I wouldn’t be locked in a contract. All three options are within my budget but that doesn’t mean I want to throw money on the fire if I can help it. Buying either phone outright is not an option at this time. As you can see, option #1 is very appetizing as it’s the cheapest and maintains my current carrier. From the review I’ve watched and read it seems that the major fault in the Razer phone is the camera quality which doesn’t bother me a lot as I rarely, if ever, take photos. Are there any big differences between the two phones that might sway the decision either way? Any info from people with either device would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  18. Hi, I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 7 1700 and so far the experience is great. However, ever the past couple of days, I've noticed that I've been signed out of my google and youtube accounts randomly on my desktop. And the funny thing is that it hasn't happened on my laptop, which is running an AMD processor as well, nor my old FX-9590 build. My brother has a Ryzen 5 1600X and it has been doing the same thing since he got it last May. So any advice would be a great help
  19. I need to get latitude/longitude coordinates for a list of addresses. I figured I could just import my addresses into Google MyMaps from Google Sheets and then download a new file as .KML which would have the coordinated but that didn't work out. It turns out the .KML (which is just a renamed .XML) doesn't have the coordinates. It seems to me, google only includes the coordinates data for points that were manually added by clicking the map and not if they were imported in bulk. For the bulk data, there's only the info I uploaded myself. Is there some other service that gives you coordinates for addresses or is there a way to force MyMaps to do this? EDIT: I found Google's API for this: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/geocoding/start?csw=1 Looks like it'll take a line or two of code, which is a line or two more than what I have time for now. I'll look into it tomorrow. If anyone comes up with suggestions, I'm all ears, I'd rather not python in the morning. What with the If Coffee=False Then brainFunction=False

  21. LG is teasing a new LG ThinQ Speaker with built-in support for Google Assistant ahead of the big CES show in January. LG worked with Google on the so-called “premium” speaker that the company is positioning as a voice-activated interface for LG’s smart home appliances. The speaker can control countless devices from many manufacturers including LG’s own ThinQ smart home products; a lineup that includes smart lamps, door locks, thermostats, sound bars, and appliances like fridges, washing machines, and robotic vacuums. What do you guys think of it? Source: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/12/28/16825106/lg-thinkq-ai-smart-speaker-google-assistant
  22. Bing vs Google

I tried to Bing and Google for iPun X and only Google worked why did Microsoft fail so hard to find the iPun X, I want to like Bing I really do but this is the kind of stuff making it hard... O3O
  23. Source: https://www.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl-xda-display-analysis/ As most of us are aware, shortly after launch the Pixel 2 XL came under huge controversy because of the display. The first thing noticed was the exceptional amount of blue tint at off angles: The display tends to shift towards a VERY cool tone at more than 45 degrees off angle. Then, we had reports of black smearing and graininess of the display, as well as people getting upset at the lack of a saturated display mode like the one that ships default on Samsung flagships. To add the nail to the coffin, reports then came in that users were experiencing burn in on the display less than a month after launch! Google responded to all this by announcing that soon they would issue an update that would help with burn in (max brightness would be reduced by 50 cd/m^2 and on screen navigation buttons would fade to a lower brightness after 3 or so seconds of no use), and that would also introduced a saturated mode for the display that would force much more saturated colors to be displayed (more specifically, force colors to target DCI-P3, the display's natural gamut). They also raised the warranty from 1 to 2 years in the US. While the new display gamut fixed the issues of a lack of saturated colors and somewhat helped alleviate burn in concerns, the blue tint, graininess, and black smear were still issues. The Pixel 2 XL came as a very controversial device because of this. Some people said the display was a non issue. Other's said it was, but the rest of the device was so good that they could forgive it. And other's said the display truly was a dealbreaker. But one thing I noticed after getting mine was that the natural and boosted modes and super washed out reds and a darker look in general. The issues weren't there when I switched to the saturated mode. The bad calibration for the natural and boosted modes bugged me so much that I was forced to use the saturated mode. While some stuff is a little too saturated for my tastes, the saturated mode seemed quite accurate so I had to live with it. However, I couldn't find a good display analysis out there that confirmed/denied my own personal experiences. Until now. The first test is a brightness check, in which case the Pixel 2 XL actually does pretty well. Next up we have greyscale accuracy, which essentially checks the accuracy of greys in a display. In the natural profile, we find pretty decent average calibration though a definitely cooler tone at the whites Next up is gamma, and here we see something somewhat concerning. One thing I found very interesting though was that the saturated mode has much better greyscale. Now for display measurements in the natural mode: This basically confirms my own observations of the Pixel 2 XL having weak reds. Stuff like the youtube logo look like a dark red rather than the red they should look like, which is really annoying in day to day usage. Display measurements in the boosted mode: Still, compared to blues and especially greens, reds are quite lacking. Finally, we have the saturated profile. Google never mentioned exactly what it is but we can deduce that this is in fact targeting DCI-P3, the display's natural color gamut. Because of this, we actually find a very accurate mode: We already found exceptionally good greyscale on the saturated mode, and here we find very good accuracy in general. These basically confirm my own observations on the display. The natural and boosted modes aren't great, but the saturated mode is quite accurate. While this indicates the saturated mode is a good mode to set the display to, that still leaves other issues on the table, notably blue shift, graininess, black smear, and burn in. On my Pixel 2 XL the blue shift is definitely there but in normal usage it doesn't get noticed. However, if you're laying it flat on a table or something like that that could result in off angle viewing, it can be annoying, though it's mostly noticeable on white backgrounds (when watching youtube videos with lots of different colors, I don't really notice it). On my unit I don't have any black smear and haven't noticed any burn in yet, but graininess is there. The graininess is best described as the sort of feel you get when you look at a display on a Kindle. While it doesn't bother me at all, it might bother other's out there. All in all, the Pixel 2 XL has a very accurate display when targeting DCI-P3. Unfortunately, this fact is brought down by the hardware issues with the display itself. Hopefully next year we can see Pixels that have great displays, as Google has demonstrated they can calibrate a display very well. HTC has some great design talent and I hope that next year we can see a Pixel 3/3 XL that truly match/exceed other flagships in all aspects. TL:DR, the Pixel 2 XL's natural and boosted modes aren't great but the saturated mode is very accurate.
  24. Source: LinkedIn via Android Authority From Android Authority (Why are Apple’s chips faster than Qualcomm’s? – Gary explains): This doesn't surprise me. Google is aware that one of the reasons why Android is fragmented is because of Qualcomm. Qualcomm only releases drivers up to two years and after that, they're done and move to the new version of Snapdragon and on top of that, Google is aware that at the moment, Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoC is very good but not on par with Apple's own A series chips. I remember back in 2013 when the die hard Android fans are dismissing Apple because they still use dual core SoCs (typical Apple hater) but Apple surprised everyone with the iPhone 5s's A7 chip which is the first 64-bit ARM SoC for consumers whereas Qualcomm simply doubled their core count with the Snapdragon 600 (previously dual core Snapdragon S4 Pro). Geekbench resuslts: Samsung Galaxy S4 (32-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad core) vs iPhone 5s (64-bit A7 chip dual core) - 2013 Geekbench Results: Google Pixel 2XL (Qualcomm Snapdragon 835) vs iPhone X (A11 Bionic: two high performance cores + four power efficient cores) - 2017 *I know there are valid reasons to dismiss Geekbench results but it's probably when comparing an x86 CPU vs an ARM SoC only. Google has been taken many pages from Apple's playbook and having their own in-house designed SoCs is one of them. Android 8.1 update enabled the Pixel Visual Core SoC in the Pixel 2/2XL which allows for better local machine learning while taking pictures and video and it shows as the Pixel 2/2Xl can do bokeh without relying on a secondary sensor like the iPhone X/8+ and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 aside from the fact that the Pixel 2XL scored higher by a few points than the iPhone X in DxO Mark. Since Google is building out their own SoCs and probably ditch Qualcomm, it raises a few questions: Would this mean that the Pixel line will no longer be a reference hardware to Android OEMs and will become a direct competitor not only to Apple but also to the likes of Android OEMs like Samsung, etc? Will Google allow licensing of their own in-house SoC to other OEMs? (Unlikely just like Apple but who knows?) How will Qualcomm respond to Google using their own SoCs? Will they finally release drivers for more than two years? Will Qualcomm finally build their own smartphone? So basically, Google is kinda like Intel by hiring an engineer from their competitor. I for one, thinks this is a good move from Google. As Gary from Android Authority has said, Qualcomm back in 2013 behaved lazily like Intel.
