Hello guys i have a questions for anyone who had google fiber in Miami Florida and i want to know if it is good and if it has ethernet, Right now I'm dealing with crappy At&t wifi and i can't go with either net because the Data cable port is all the way on the other side of my house, but anyways i mostly play league of legends and with At&t i get 63-72 ms 70% of the time but sometime the ms could go up to 1000-2000ms. When i get my parts for my gaming pc i would like to know what network adapters wired and wireless would be good for dealing with high ms if i still have At&T. I have these adapters listed but I'm not so sure if they are good with dealing with AT&T. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FnrRr7

Here we go again, more BS from the big ISP's, working with elected, alleged "representatives" of a local government, to stall or outright prevent any and all competition. This time in Nashville Tennessee. Considering how terrible both companies are at what they do, I see absolutely no reason to involve them. Both have extremely long and sordid histories of offering terrible service, overcharging customers, lying about overcharging customers, actively donating to any "representative" willing to help allow them to not have to compete, etc. They deserve no voice in this matter, imho. So, let me guess this straight. She voted against OTMR the first time around,, this could stall Google Fiber being rolled out, and now she says she would support OTMR? This woman needs to not be in office. She either has no idea what is actually going one (she doesn't know who she's talking to. Comcast and AT&T are scum, we all know this), or they're in her pocket. (my opinion, but still likely considering the history of corporations paying politicians to lie to get what the companies want. They call it "lobbying", sane people call it bribery). So basically, her idea amounts to making things slightly faster, and giving the companies a slap on the wrist for misbehaving, and doing what we ALL know they will do. Source: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/09/att-and-comcast-helped-elected-official-write-plan-to-stall-google-fiber/ There is more to read here, but do any of us really doubt that Comcast and AT&T have anyone's interests in mind but their own? The only arguments against OTMR, are completely asinine. Mainly consisting of Comcast and AT&T saying they need to "ensure the quality of Google's work", as if either of those companies are in ANY position to ensure the quality of anyone's work. As for outages? I don't think it would matter much, I would be willing to bet that Comcast and AT&T will lose most of their customers once they realize a better ISP is in town offering a better service at a better price. Hell my workplace uses Comcast, and it gets disrupted regularly. Granted we have a ridiculous amount of traffic (installing ChromeOS on several thousand Chromebooks at once)

I live in San Antonio and was notified by Google that Signs ups were starting. This is great in my opinion because, I currently have AT&T Fiber and pay $80 but am under a yearly contract. Pay TV and Cable is a dying industry and online streaming is where everyone is heading. So Google realizing this and just offering only Internet with no contract, hidden fee and only $55 a month is amazing and they can easily take all of Spectrum and AT&T customers from my area. All of my friends and family have already signed up and will be canceling their current ISP which all pay almost $100/month for 300mbps or gigabit if they have fiber. A quote from google said if you sign up for their online streaming service YouTube TV you will get a free Nvidia Sheild TV from Google which a great deal in my opinion. 9to5google reported on this as well. I believe with this pricing begin so competitive and Google now using the micro-trenching method of speeding up fiber installation to neighborhood, they will force all other greedy ISP's to upgrade their infrastructure and offer better prices. Google has said they currently have no plans to change the prices of fiber in existing cities and will Keep San Antonio as the only city with that $55 price. Basically, Google and AT&T(a bridge off of bell), are 2 of the companies installing fiber optic cables. The old rules were a 24 hour alert, and specifically, during 10am-4pm, to avoid rush hour. Both companies disobeyed this, working well after 6pm, causing a lot of traffic. Trust me, I live here. As mentioned in here, there have been many complaints. A guy had pretty much all of his resources taken down, a big problem. In dunwoody, two pipelines were broken. Bath of these problems were because of poorly marked maps. Another day, another Google automatic system does something funny. image source: tumblr What happens is that by doing so, subscribers are directly targeted with "settlements" fees. Source: http://torrentfreak.com/google-fiber-sends-automated-piracy-fines-to-subscribers-150520/ Ugh... piracy is a problem in many cases, but forwarding DMCA take downs directly to customers kind of violates the privacy that you trust into your ISP. Its funny tho, it seams that using google automatic system's to target its customers is a common thing. Look at YouTube DMCA take down requests that are being abused, what stops the same thing happening here as well?

Google Fiber is coming to Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham [6] First some background: ---Local news has been reporting on city council passing new laws allowing Google Fiber 'huts' (or whatever term they are using) for their on-ground Fiber central nodes, and other legal requirements for a while now. [1] ---There are job postings for Google Fiber positions (tele-commute) for Nashville. [2] Tomorrow Tue the 27th of Jan 2015: ---There will be a noon press conference [3] at the 'Nashville Entrepreneur Center', which is one of Google's Tech Hubs. [4] I'll update this thread tomorrow after the news conf.... (Heck if it is streamed... I might link that in here...) Since I'll be at the News Conf. ~RighteousCoder UPDATE 11:22 PST, Atlanta is also holding a news conf. with google today. and 2 NC cities are listed as likely G-Fiber blessed cities "expanding its presence to people in Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Raleigh-Durham, N.C. and Nashville, Tenn.," from cnet. [5] UPDATE 13:00 PST, confirmed the 4 new cities to get Google Fiber. Also: If mod could change title of thread to "Google Fiber is coming to Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham" That would be great. Sauce: http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/26/7919167/google-fiber-launching-in-atlanta-nasville-raleigh-charlotte Google is set to announce the expansion of its Google Fiber internet service to four new cities, The Wall Street Journal reports, with the details of the new rollout coming in the next few days. According to the publication's sources, the The company will start to offer the one-gigabit broadband network in Atlanta, Nashville, and in two cities in North Carolina — Raleigh-Durham, and Charlotte. This very awesome for my area as I live in Atanta-Metro area. I guess we have to wait until we hear more, but hopefully they expand enough in my area. If not, I just may take Linus suggestion and move. :V I'm kind of concerned with what Comcast and AT&T will do.

SageTV was acquired by Google in 2011 whereafter Google used the technology for its Google Fiber TV service. Prior to Google's acquisition SageTV was a cross-platform digital video recorder tool and media center application for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Source: http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/16/google-open-sourcing-sage-tv/ Code related to Google Fiber will not be available (which means there won’t be native support for YouTube, Netflix, etc), but there will be support for media center extender devices. The interesting part remains; will this open source version attract independent developers looking to add new features or optimise the software for new platforms like low-power devices. Raspberry Pi 2?

Google Fiber teams up with Netflix Yep Google is teaming up with Netflix to take down the evil ISP's (namely comcast). Mainly they are advocating the Open Connect Program with Netflix (which puts netflix boxes in the ISP offices and connect to network directly so have a faster connection i believe) and asking the FCC to ban Fastlanes/tolls on direct connection. They are also trying to pull up the veil of bullshit that ISP's have placed over everyone's eyes and i think they are doing a pretty good job of it. The sad thing is that i don't think Google would do this if it wasn't in their best interest to do it. Edit: This isn;t an edit more like an addition. Ars Technica just put up an article on this, figured id just put it here sense its a similar topic. Why Google Fiber, unlike Comcast, gives Netflix free peering well i was gonna write about what the article said but after skimming it i decided that its about the same stuff so i guess i'll just be another source lol. Feel free to read it and put in some of the details i excluded.

Most of us heard of Google's anouncement of the expansion of Google Fiber to new cities, but if you didn't then here is the jist of it: Starting in 2015 google will start development in 9 cities and thier surrounding subards (Portland, San Jose, Atlanta, Raleigh-Duram, and Phoenix only) for thier 1Gb/sec fiber optic internet service. It will take a long time for all of the ares to get connections and some of the cities on the list might not even get connections if google runs into some geographical and logistical problems. Here is the list of cities that are on schedule reciving the gift of fiber: Atlanta, GA -Avondale -Estates -Brookhaven -College Park -Decatur -East Point -Hapeville -Sandy Springs -Smyrna Charlotte, NC Nashville,TN Salt Lake City, UT San Antonio, TX Phoenix, AZ -Scottsdale -Tempe Raleigh-Durham, NC -Carrboro -Cary -Chapel Hill -Durham -Garner -Morrisville -Raleigh San Jose, CA -Sant Clara -Sunnyvale -Mountain View -Palo Alto Portland, Or -Beaverton -Hillsboro -Gresham -Lake Oswego -Tigard Now that you know what happened, I can now state why I put maybe in the title of this article. I currently live in Tualatin, OR, Have reletives that live in Gilbert, AZ, and know a youtuber (Guude Boulderfist) that lives a couple of minutes away from Raleigh, NC. While it is a long drive for Guude and is a good drive for my reletive to get to Pheonix, I can see Tigard, Or from my rooftop. Because of the fact that half of my friends will have fiber and the other not made me do some research into witch citites are included and ended up using the link on the google fiber home page to check my address. Here are my results : It says this when I put in my tualatin address even though tualatin isn't in the list of cities. For those that have never heard of Tigard or Tualatin, Or they are two cities that make up the portland suburbs; Tigard has twice the population of Tualatin so I have been thinking that tualatin is included as part of Tigard. If anyone that lives in a small town near one of the cities metioned above then please contact google fiber and try to find out if you might be getting google fiber and post below. http://bangordailynews.com/2014/01/13/business/gwi-sues-maine-fiber-alleges-misuse-of-federal-funds-intended-for-statewide-broadband-expansion/ - Full article http://www.gwi.net/policy/news/notice-customers-regarding-recent-filing-maine-courts/ - GWI mentions it on their site I do have access to GWI here in case Time Warner/Comcast goes to shit, but my friend had a bad experience with them and I find TWC to be far more reliable than them. However, that was like 7 years ago and Time Warner has degraded over the past 5 months heavily, let alone in those 7 years. Prices went up, my net speed is going down and they still cannot offer higher than 15mbps/1mbps bcable where I am. I hadn't found any information on their expansion past Orono, Maine's university, let alone anywhere else in Maine, until just now. I would definitely throw my money at them for fiber, even if I had to move because I live in the outskirts of central Maine, close to nowhere and really can't get good internet. However, finding out that I have a decent chance to get gigabit internet in this way is depressing/disgusting/making me hate big telco companies. Read article and/or what I say after for explanation. So basically, the alleged misuse of federal grant money by expanding to Boston has delayed residential and statewide gigabit internet by 1.5 years and counting. They (Maine Fiber) are probably selling bandwidth to TWC and/or Comcast for good money, and keeps the two big guys' pockets filled by cutting out GWI on the residential access. At least that's what I'm assuming since it's "substantially complete", according to Captain Nimrod CEO of Maine Fiber Co. The fact that Maine has been pushing for fiber since even before 2010 and still hasn't got it set up to the majority/any residential addresses with this "completed" is bullshit. It sounds shady as hell and I'm backing GWI on this even if the article really doesn't tell me a whole lot. And the worst part is that despite this statewide gigabit network being "completed", we're still ranked 40th overall in broadband speed/access/quality out of the 50 states as of 2013 surveys. Apparently because of that, business flees to Vermont, NY and such for better broadband access. We have fiber laid out everywhere but have barely any access to it, if any. I'm waiting for more news to come out on it, really hoping the gov't steps in once they finish the contractual dispute case if it leans in favor of GWI.

A report came out recently from Minnesota governor Mark Dayton's Task Force on Broadband. This report recommends investing 100 million dollars of the state's surplus towards infrastructure to rural communities without adequate internet access. Although this is not gigabit. They call 10mbps adequate. That being said it is fiber. Is 10mbps enough? Should they be investing in a higher speed? 100mbps? Gigabit? What are your thoughts LTT forum. http://blogs.mprnews.org/ground-level/2014/01/state-should-put-100-million-into-broadband-fund-says-task-force/

Currently Comcast is the main provider of Internet in the twin cities with their highest speed plan being 105mbps. CenturyLink is rolling out gigabit and will be pricing it at $80-110/month depending on how the customer bundles with them. http://www.mprnews.org/story/2014/08/05/centurylink-minnesota-high-speed-internet
