I currently have a 1tb Gen3 M.2 installed in the only Gen4 M.2 slot on my motherboard and I'm looking to swap it with a 2tb Gen4 M.2 SSD and move my current 1tb Gen3 SSD to the other M.2 slot on my motherboard. -Since my OS is already installed on that 1tb drive will I run into issues by adding a new SSD and moving the current SSD in use into another slot? -Do I need to or should I migrate the OS to the new Gen4 SSD I'll be adding? -Is there anything I need to change in the BIOS as far as boot settings? Just built my first PC this month and hoping to not brick it by doing this so any inputs are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey all, I'll try to keep it short. My current rig (workstation/gaming hybrid) uses a 1TB WD_BLACK SN750 as its boot drive/applications and a 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD for media, docs, and games. I just picked up 1TB Samsung 980 Pro from Best Buy now I am debating on how I should configure my Storage. I am go to remove the games form my HDD and put them on one of the SSD's, but idk which SSD to use as my boot/productivity drive and which to use as my dedicated games library. I know the Gen4 980 Pro is far superior them my Gen3 SN750, but will my games really benefit THAT must from the Samsung, or would I be better using it as my main drive for boot and workloads and using the SN750 for game storage?

I've just bought a second M.2 PCIe SSD, installed it and my system isn't recognising it. The new M.2 I have is the Firecuda 530 and I've just noticed it's a gen4. Does this mean it is not compatible with my motherboard? I haven't tried putting the new M.2 in the slot my old one is in yet, will that cause me booting issues? (I'm not the most clued up as you can see). Any help appreciated, thank you

Hey all! Long time lurker, first time poster here with a question I cannot seem to find an answer to. I have an AMD-based system that supports a PCI-E Gen 4 x4 m.2 SSD, but when I use the slot with my new Samsung 980 Pro I get a Gen 4 x1 connection. As you can imagine, this destroys my performance (~1783 read/1768 write). Posting this in the motherboard area because I suspect it's related to motherboard settings... somehow. Solutions attempted: RTFM (nothing) Checked BIOS for settings (hardcoded the slot to Gen 4 from "auto", no change) Google Unplugged all SATA backup drives (in case of some weird "it's x4 unless you have SATA's in Slot 1" problem) Updated mobo firmware to latest non-beta Relevant Hardware: ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (link) AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Problem M.2 SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB <--- in slot M2_1 on motherboard [the problematic SSD] Other M.2 SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB <--- in slot M2_2 on motherboard {this is a PCI-E Gen 3 SSD and operates at proper Gen 3 x4 speed} GTX 1060 video card in the first PCI-E x16 slot Any assistance figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, So with the announcement of the 11th Gen laptops which now finally support PCIe Gen 4; Laptops gonna be twice as fast as previous generations PCIe Gen 3 laptops. But unfortunately at the moment these processor can only support 1 PCIe Gen 4. My question is how will RAID configuration work in laptop that has 1 Gen 4 slot and other Gen 3 slots? What would be the effective speed if I were to do RAID 0 between these two slots with my Gen4 SSD?

Hi ! I have a 2017 Alienware 15 R3 with an i7-7700HQ. Recently I have been getting a lot of BSODs as WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. I found out that its my fauly SSD I need to buy a new one for my laptop. However, I'm in a dilemma here. I'm can get a 500gb 970 Evo Plus here for 7200Rs (98$), but then I'm also seeing deals where I can get a 500gb Seagate Firecuda Gen4 SSD for 9500Rs (129$) or a Corsair MP600 Gen4 for 10,400Rs (140$). Both of them support speeds upto 5Gb/s. Now I know those Gen4 SSDs won't perform as good on my Gen3 slot but it can be really useful for in the future when I make my own desktop with Gen4 capabilities. Tldr: I know that it won't run at full speed. I just want to know will it work as a main boot drive without any hassles? Or will it somehow be incompatible with my old Pcie 2.0 PC? And will it be faster than my current HDD, as expected? Also, how long are m.2 nvme drives? From googling, I believe my pc has 1x Pcie 2.0 slot(s), which can go up to 330MB/s. Even though that's nowhere near a gen4 nvme's full potential, it'll still be faster than my current HDD lol. It's not that expensive and it's something I can likely use in a new computer later. Even tho I don't use Windows, DirectStorage sound pretty awesome, and who knows what else the future will bring? Also, how much disk space does windows 11 system files take? Iirc, my current system files on Zorin OS Lite 16.2 barely traits up any space.

Hello everyone, I've been researching CPUs and I'm leaning towards AMD's Threadripper. I would appreciate your clarification, expertise, and/or advice on some of the thoughts and questions I've listed below, to help me decide on a CPU. Extra/background info: recently sold my 2013 trashcan. I've been blind for so long and I'm choosing to step into the light with a new PC work/gaming station. Alas, the time has come for me to venture for an upgrade! More often than not, I would run heavy music sessions. As my rig grew, it incorporated running those sessions along with light designs and videos simultaneously for performances. The new station is also required to handle video production and other similar tasks. Lastly, I'd like for this PC to run games during off-hours. I've been doing as much research as I can on processors since it's the first element I'm looking at for the build. However, I'm not as well-read or experienced on some of the finer details when it comes to processors. I currently have a temporary set up that I'm surviving on, so I don't mind waiting, learning, and doing this build right. I've realized this post is a lot longer than I intended as I went over it again. Not that the current offering is bad, but if it's out in the next few months I might as well wait. They keep talking about Zen 3 architecture, I don't know what kind of improvements I should expect? Or more attractive releases that will compete with AMD? Should I wait? The main reason I'm staying away from intel is because it feels like they are in the process of re-evaluating their line up. I've been reading something about new 10nm architecture and that there are either new Core or Xeon releases soon? For now, I'm mainly looking at the 24-core 3960X from AMD. The Intel offerings weren't as attractive compared to AMD. With Intel, I felt forced to have a workstation with their Xeon line, or a gaming/desktop rig with their Core line. The 3960X feels like a nice middle ground since it has nice clock speeds, high core count, along with ECC. I'm not entirely sure whether I really need ECC for my purposes, but the Threadripper has it anyway. From what I understand it's mainly meant for servers that are running 24/7. I doubt it helps with application stability or reducing crashes? Audio work usually involves lots of libraries and session data so it might help with keeping all that data safe from being corrupted or lost somehow? In the end, I guess I can get any great CPU available today and move on with it. But, I only get to do this once... For the next 10 years or so at least lol... so I want to make sure that I'm 100% happy with the CPU I end up getting. Even if I have to wait a few months for it. so I just picked up a second RTX 2080 (non TI), with two things in mind. if the games I play scale well and I get better performance than a 2080TI 30-50% of the time its money well spent as its cheaper. (factoring in used hardware). Also I don't game in 4k resolution only 1440p ultrawide so i don't need the extra GPU memory. With Ryzen 2 coming out I will be upgrading to X570 and the 12 core monster. As I am not familiar with PCI bandwidth restrictions I am looking for info on it. With two 2080's, 2080TI's, or RTX Titans, could any of these saturate PCI express Gen3 to its full limits? If so do you think Nvida could release a driver update to support gen 4? (I don't know if this is even possible) I have always loved running multi GPU setups and miss the days or 3-way and 4-way SLI. I personally know its not the most cost efficient way to collect more power. and can scale negatively. However, coming up on smaller and smaller architectures coming out for CPU's and GPU's I feel multi GPU setups will be the next "mainstream" enthusiast builds. As Navi and RTX will come closer and closer in performance over the next 3 years. Is any of this even a relevant thought? Please let me know what you think.

Am I going to see a difference in performance between Gen 3 and Gen 4 over Thunderbolt 3? Is my MBP late 2016 even able to read Gen 4 over TB? Do I need to get a Gen 4 compatible enclosure or any thunderbolt nvme enclosure would do? Thanks

Hi, Title says half of it. Would you sacrifice a lot of performance if you used a PCIe Gen 4 GPU (eg. RTX 3000) on a Gen 3 motherboard? I'm currently looking to upgrade my little beast of a potato. Thinking of doing an update with the 3090 from pascal Titan X. Long over due, obviously. Also had a M.2 Samsung die (thanks Windows!), so bought a new M.2 Gen3. But.... looks like 3080 and 3090 work in Gen 4. I have a z390 system (i9-9900k on a Gigabyte Aorus Master), which is Gen 3. Do I need to make a whole new z490 system to make a 3090 purchase makes sense? How much will my current z390 system hamper performance. I could ask GamersNexus, but I want to understand the answer... (No, I need guaranteed stability, so it's still Intel for now. Leave me alone.)

TL;DR Pretty much the title, just looking to buy all of the Gen III and IV games. Hi all, so after finding my Poke'mon Ruby cartridge and some talk about AS which one of my friends has, I've gotten back into Poke'mon, and I've decided to pretty much buy all of the Gen III and Gen IV games, all the way from FireRed and LeafGreen to HeartGold and SoulSilver. I lost pretty much my whole set of Nintendo GBA and DS games except Ruby and SoulSilver which were in my DS Lite and DSi XL respectively. So, I was wanting to know where I should go to buy these games, and if you want suggest a couple of other GBA games I should play. At the moment I'm just looking at eBay, and considering FireRed and LeafGreen for $25 total (same seller, no postage, and just the cartridges and a small plastic container). On the other hand I could buy the Gen III set for however much in a bid (there's 5 of the same order from one seller). I'd personally like to get them from a decent Specialist Store, but $20 a piece is not so nice. And yes, I realise I'm pretty much buying the same games (FireRed - LeafGreen, Pearl - Diamond), I just want to have a nice collection and be able to play through them all. I could alternatively buy them from EB Games (Aus version of GameStop). Cheers! Just because, these are the games I had before losing the case that held all my DS and GBA games.
