I currently am running 4GB's of 1333 Mhz ram on a ASUS M5A97 R2.0, with an AMD FX-8320 CPU. and have a clear ram deficiency in most games I play. Do I have to follow the memory qualified vendors list to a T? or can I use something with the same timings, speeds, voltages etc..? I found a pretty decent deal based on the speeds and amount of ram for Canadian prices. (link here)-> https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... This RAM also is low profile, which I need in case I want to buy more to fit under my Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler. Also this RAM is aesthetically pleasing since it matches the blue color theme of my build. My current budget for RAM is $100 maybe $120 Canadian. Let me know what you think, is this viable? I hope to hear some feedback, Thanks.

Good day, I'm planning on upgrading my graphics card. I currently have an AMD Radeon R9 290X Reference using Kraken G10 with Corsair H55, since the stock cooler sounds like it will explode just browsing using Google Chrome. Will my FX-8320 which is clocked at 4.00GHz (stable) significantly bottleneck a GTX 1070? Or is it even a worth it upgrade from what I currently have since I'm only gaming at 1920x1080 at 60FPS, but planning to buy a higher refresh rate monitor with the same native resolution. Many thanks.

Hey, I have built a computer using the Asus AURA 970 motherboard. The motherboard has a m.2 slot on it, but I just cant seem to understand what's going on here. I have tried 2 different m.2 ssds that were listed as compatible on PCpartpicker. However, anytime I plug anything in there, the bios does not detect it. My specs are: -AMD FX-8320e -16GB DDR3 RAM -Sapphire RX-480 8G The SSD that I am attempting to use is Transcend 128GB SATA III 6Gb/s MTS400 (https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-128GB-MTS400-Solid-TS128GMTS400/dp/B00KLTPUU0) I have tried an adapter, but that didn't work. At one point I had a Samsung SSD that I put in that slot, but that also didn't do anything. This is my first go at M.2, so it is very possible that I am doing something wrong in setting it up. I wanted to used this as a boot drive for lightning fast boot times. Thanks

Hello, Not too long ago I built my second gaming rig because my laptop pretty much died. I used an old FX-8320E processor running at 3.2 GHz stock. I have tried many different solutions to overclock it but it just wont go past 3.75 GHz. Here's my specs: -FX-8320E -16GB 1888MHz DDR3 ram -RX 480 8GB graphics card -Asus 970 AURA gaming motherboard -CX-750 PSU -Freezer 13 CPU air cooler It's a low budget build but overall does the job. I Have gotten it as high as 3.9GHz without a crash but its pretty unstable. At 4GHz it won't power on at all. I've set the voltage to 1.35 so it's not that. I have sufficient cooling that never gets my CPU past 53C, so it's not a problem with heat. It simply just wont overclock. Let me know if I am doing this wrong, as I have only started overclocking CPUs with this rig.

Hi. I was wondering if my overclock on my fx 8320 is safe on my motherboard. It has a 4+1 power phase and i heard its not the best for overclocking because the VRM's could overheat. To create the worst situation I used aida64 and stressed my cpu, fpu, cache, ram, and my gpu. I was getting 3 temps on my motherboard and 2 were at 50c and one was at 60c I was wondering if those were safe temps for my motherboard. Ny cpu was at 55c and my gpu was at 60c during the test also. I am running my cpu at 4.5ghz which is .5ghz higher from my 4ghz boost on my fx 8320. I am also using 1.425 volts which might be too high but im not sure. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

What Happened? Hi! So, yesterday, my keyboard locked up in American Truck Simulator, leading me to force restart my computer. Today, my keyboard locked up in another unrelated game, Slowdrive. Then later, it did in my browser, leading me to close and reopen my web browser. What Have I Done? I replaced my keyboard with another one and the same problem persists. I tried running ATS in safe mode (there is no option in Slowdrive). I have restarted my computer. I switched the keyboard to different USB ports. Maybe someone can shed some light on this. I'm running a asus m5a99x evo r2.0 with f3-14900cl10d-16gbxl 1866mhz RipjawsX with a FX-8320 cpu, and my dilemma is I can't get the ram to clock at 1866 without locking the system up. Mind you, this same CPU and ram was on a ASRock 990FX extreme 3 board that DID run at 1866 perfectly.. so what am I missing? The highest I can set it to is 1600. HELP!

I recently built a second computer, everything is working fine except that my case and cpu fans are spinning at 2000+ rpm. On my main PC i can just go in to the BIOS and lower the fan speeds, but on this PC when i try to lower the fan speeds nothing happens. I even tried to turn off all of the fans, but they just keep spinning. Help appreciated thx.

FX-8320 MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz XFX R9 390 Double Dissipation Dictionary: Disclaimer: I am no expert. This is on air. Temperatures and daily driving the OC take priority over getting through a benchmark for epeen growth. Also – my application of OC’ing is limited both by thermal levels and my motherboard. Motherboard power phase delivery is something others should consider when OC’ing. The power phases on each board vary and have a lot to do with what kind of voltages, stability, and OC’s you’ll be getting. My personal limit for voltage is ~1.45v on the CPU core. If you are liquid cooled, etc., just live in a cool place, or have a better motherboard – you’ll be able to push this further. My ambient temperature is ~25.5c and I can get okay temperatures up to ~1.46v, but at that voltage my desired clock speed is 4.8 Ghz, and both the voltage and the frequency increase are adding a bit too much heat in my current climate, etc. Generally, I have identified a “wall” in terms of OC’ing around 4.8Ghz. On the subject of hitting a wall, I will delve a little further into what I mean. The relationship between voltage and core frequency is an exponential curve/growth. The higher the clock, the voltage you’ll need to achieve that clock will be exponentially growing. For example, I can hit 4.7 on 1.44, but for a stable 4.8 I need ~1.48v+. That type of voltage increase for 100MHz increase is simply not worth it for my usage. It won’t be noticed, my thermals are unfavorable, and the longevity of the CPU/Motherboard is compromised. Now, I’ve tried FSB overclocking and multiplier overclocking. What worked best for me was a combination of both. You can easily achieve a standard multiplier OC and be a happy camper. I will explain why it is nice to use FSB next. Using the FSB increase will allow you to reach a higher clock on CPU-NB/HT frequency. This is the primary point of using FSB increase. There is up to 5% performance increase existing in CPU-NB/HT/Memory OC’ing in my specific experience with this chip and motherboard. Note: The CPU-NB frequency just won’t boot above x13 (black screens), however if the FSB frequency is pushing the clock of the CPU-NB it can achieve like frequencies of a x13 multiplier. Upvolting the CPU-NB/NB/SB needs to be done with caution. In most cases it will reduce stability. You would think that on the verge of a stable OC, upping the voltage to support these channels would be helpful, but anything other single notches above stock has given me issues with my, somewhat, moderate OC. So what has worked best for me? I will outline exactly what is working and why it is working. Using a FSB of 206 with a multiplier of 23 is how I am getting stable and favorable results. My best results ever were using FSB of 210 and multiplier of 22.5. Why can’t I run the better OC, which actually has less core clock frequency, but better overall results? The memory/CPU-NB/HT frequencies are causing instability (I am unable to pinpoint exactly where, but the CPU-NB frequency definitely gets finicky near/above 2600 and the ram speed exceeding the boards limitation of 2133 seems to be causing problems as well). Edit: I have acquired knowledge of there being voids in the FSB clock that simply won't achieve stability, for instance the 210 not working but my later settings of 216 working. It's mostly trial and error, but different frequencies will behave more appropriately than others. What are the results? With both GPU/CPU OC’s results in ~1700 points in firestrike score increase over stock. 400 of which were a direct result of CPU-NB/HT/Memory OC’ing. Stock: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7206865 Daily Driving OC: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7737463 Tips and Tricks: Basically, all of my testing has taught me that at the higher echelon of OC’ing – you’ll get more performance out of tweaking and maximizing the CPU-NB/HT/Memory frequencies, even at the cost of core clock in some situations. I have dropped core clock and achieved higher CPU scores, albeit, not by a significant amount. My Final stats are: FSB: 206 Multiplier: 23 Memory: 2196 DRAM Voltage: Stock (auto) VCORE: 1.448V CPU-NB: +.005 NB: 1.12 1.12 Some of these values are somewhat arbitrary, as I think left on auto(stock) would result in no altered results. Also, you may have to bump up your ram speed to achieve a stable OC on your memory (mine is rated at 1.65V, but I lost stability when upping the voltage). Well, I hope this was somewhat helpful to anyone trying to get more out of their FX series CPU’s to tide them over for new Zen architecture. Let me know if you have any critiques or would like to add anything – I am open to learn and want people to have the best information they can.

Hey guys, I've found an offer locally, where a shop will take my old hardware and give me discount for the new I want to buy. What I have is: ASRock 990FX Extreme 3 FX-8320 FSP 650W Silver CM 412s CPU cooler (the fat one) CM N400 Case ASUS DirectCU II R9-270 2GB 2x4 GB Kingston HyperX DDR 3/ 1866Mhz I recently got my CPU and Motherboard RMA-d since the VRM of the Mobo burned (smoke and stuff) as it also fried my CPU. So the CPU and Motherboard I have now are practically new. I've always had problems with this mobo-cpu combo since on many of the games the VRM got hot and throttled my CPU performance which in turn leads to fps drops from time to time. (Happens with the new one aswell, eventhough much less frequently than with the one that got smoked). I've had it enough with this motherboard so I was thinking of selling it for 50-ish euro and buying a new one for about 110-120. I was looking at ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 The offer is as it stands: They give me 6600k + 2x4GB DDR4 Crucial 2133Mhz for my MOBO,CPU and RAM as I will add another 100 Euro. I will also have to buy a new motherboard as I am thinking that the Gigabyte GA-Z170 HD3 is going to be good for me,as it is priced at 110-ish Euro. Combined with the money for the cpu deal its at the edge of my budget. They will give me an offer for the 4690k on Wednesday, since they're going to restock then. But I am expecting some offer that will be near the first one. What do you guys think I should do? Go for 6600k or 4690k. I think I will do a mild overclock (as air cooling won''t allow me to do much more, also considering that the motherboard I am looking at is not enthusiast grade). I am also planning on upgrading the R9-270 to GTX970 in a few months and I don't intend on using more than one GPU. Please also tell me if upgrading to new MOBO/CPU combo will require me to change other parts, such as PSU or anything else. I am sorry for the wall of text, and thank you for taking the time to help a brother out. Cheers, Arucad

Hello everyone. Let me start off by saying that I am new to the LinusTechTips forums, and I came here because I haven't been able to solve this issue anywhere else. I am also an active viewer of LinusTechTips on YouTube (Vessel trial expired). The issue at hand is a random FPS drop in most games. My FPS will be fine and above 60, but suddenly at any given moment, even in a really basic scene, my FPS will drop down to about 20. The FPS drop lasts about 10-15 seconds. It can get really annoying especially when it messes me up in certain parts of a game. Let me start off by saying that my temperatures are fine. My GPU temperatures go to 70 C max, and my CPU goes to 50-60 C max. This is all throughout the whole experience. Now, my GPU usage drops to 30%, in which it should usually be higher. Meanwhile, my CPU usage stays the same at around 60% (while playing GTA V). I mine as well post my specs, so here they are: GPU: ASUS Strix GTX 970 OC. CPU: AMD FX-8320 @ 4.2GHz. CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS 10x Performa. Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0. RAM: 12GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz. PSU: Corsair RM750. As for my Operating System, I've gone from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 thinking it would make a difference, and it didn't. When I went to other places (such as reddit), some people said that my CPU could be a bottleneck. However, I would highly doubt it since the frame drops are really random. Most of the people that said that might have been a bit biased torwards Intel? (I have nothing against them). With that being said, here's what I have tried (which didn't work): Turning off power options in my BIOS, Windows, and even nvidia control panel. Installing the newest drivers (even with DDU). Uninstalling nvidia audio drivers. Closing the nvidia streamer service. Reseating my GPU and RAM. Moving on, there are some scenarios where I don't have this issue: Any game in the Dolphin Emulator (I don't use any other emulators). Resource-light games such as 2D games. CS:GO or any other game based off the Source Engine. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. The Witcher 3. I've had this issue for about 9 months now. I built this computer about 10 months ago (February 2015). There was indeed a time period where I did not have this issue, but I am still very unclear about it. Any advice is appreciated.

Hey guys, I made a budget build with a monitor and keyboard combo with mouse. I know I shouldn't but I'm in a really tight budget tbh. Could this run games like CS:GO, TF2, MGSV, Rocket League, GMOD, Minecraft,This war of mine and Quake live at high settings at 30-60 fps? What about GTA V, MKX and some games on my wish list like that at mid settings at good fps (30 fps). I have recently upgrade my gaming PC and daily driver. I bought a brand new FX-8320 from newegg to replace my FX-4100 that I got from my brother and overclocked to 4.2ghz(or something like that). I bought his 280X so he could upgrade his graphics card and save me some money. I kept my original motherboard since it was that same socket (the reason I went with this processor). Everything appeared to be working alright for a little while. Except I would have frequent crashes of most of my programs and sometimes multiple restarts helps sometimes it didn't. I have since down clocked my CPU to 3.4ghz and I thought it was solved. However things are still going wrong. Please help, I don't know what is the problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. P.S. I have done some bench-marking in games like DayZ and it seems to be dramatically under performing regardless the graphical setting. I will update this thread with specific parts soon.

I've recently overclocked my CPU using MSIs software (command center) and the temps were fine @ 4.4ghz but you have to enable it everytime you boot and it's a pain in the ass so I ventured onto Youtube and figured out how to successfully overclock via the bios. Currently, as of writing this message, the temps shown by AIDA64 are 40 °C (104 °F) on the CPU and 46 °C (115 °F) on Core 1-8, note that I only have Microsoft Edge, AIDA64, Realtek Audio Manager and Nvidia GeForce Control Panel as well as the default background programs. My case is a NZXT S340 with the 2 default fans and the radiator of the H100i mounted at the front. Through the bios I'm now at 4.3ghz with +.230 voltage. I was interested in lowering my temps because as far as I'm concerned, 45 degrees is stupid high when Vishera cpus can only stand temps up to 60 ish degrees. This is without playing any demanding games/stress testing. If it's any help as well, I am running a GTX 970 Strix so the fans from that aren't usually on as well as a EVGA SuperNova 650w PSU. Thanks for any responses.

I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU, from an Athlon X4 840, to either an FX-6300 or an FX-8320. I've done extensive research into the CPUs available on my budget and I've decided that I'm going to get an AMD CPU because Intel CPUs are too expensive for me. However, I can't decide which of these two to get. I could get the FX-8320 which will perform better, but it costs £33 more. The reason cost is such a big issue for me is that I will need to get a new motherboard as well, and I'd like to have some money left over. If I get the cheaper CPU I'll have more money available for the motherboard, but it won't perform as well. I'll be using the CPU for some gaming and video editing. Which do you think I should get?

I am looking into upgrading my CPU from Phenom II X4 965 BE so I am wondering which CPU should I chose. I mostly use my computer for programing and playing games. I am choosing between this tree CPU's. I currently have H80 CPU cooler so cooling and overclocking AMD processors will be possible however because I lost some of the mounting hardware I think it will be hard to do anything with the i5. And there is the price the 8320 + ASUS M5A99X R2 EVO cost around 290€ (8320E is around 25€ cheaper) and the i5 + ASUS z97-A cost 420€.

Hi, I have been wanting to get back into Minecraft because of a friend of mine, but it takes a while to load the terrain when i join a server and if I get in it freezes and then i get kicked for timing out. Does anyone have any tips or tricks they can throw my way? Cheers

Hey guys! A week or two ago my FX-8320 stopped working so after contacting AMD support I sen't it to the Netherlands in the hopes that the warranty would cover it (I live in Europe) Earlier today their DHL service delivered a new CPU to me, but to my surprise, it was a FX-8350 !! I know there's not so much of a difference, but still, I am very thankful for AMD to do this for free. I've read online about people that were offered either the same CPU or a different version, but never something actually better ! Has this ever happened to anyone else? What's your experience with hardware warranties ? [sorry for my english]

Hello! I've recently purchased a new PC (a few months ago) which I assembled with a friend. Here are the specs: MB: Gigabyte MB GA-990XA-UD3 CPU: AMD FX 8320 (3.5Ghz) Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PSU: 600W Corsair Builder Series CX600M GPU:Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 270X Dual-X OC 2Gb RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 1866Mhz 2x4GB SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Basic 120GB HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM Case:Zalman Z11 Plus HF1 Mid Tower Case I'm currently using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and my CPU is not oveclocked. Last week I checked my CPU temperatures out of curiosity and found that it runs pretty hot under load. I immediately checked my BIOS and it says my CPU core temp. is 79°C. The weird thing is that this number remains unchanged no matter what i try tweaking in settings (fan speeds, PWM controls, etc.). Next I installed HW Monitor and AMD Overdrive to track my temperatures. Those two seemed to provide the most reliable readings. I discovered that the processor is running pretty cool under no load but jumps to absurd temperatures. When playing a demanding game it goes up to 80-90°C range and while watching videos or surfing it is at about 60-70. Recently I installed AIDA64 and discovered that the northbridge gets really hot too (not sure if this is normal). Yesterday I tired to remount the cooler (re-applying thermal paste and everything) but the temperatures remained the same. To provide as much information as possible I'm posting screenshots below: AIDA 64 - Under little load (watching Twitch.tv) AIDA64 - Idle A picture of the cooler setup I've also uploaded some report files from AIDA 64 with and without load. Report_idle.txt - Idle Report_load.txt - Under Load Any help would be greatly appreciated as I had no luck on other tech forums. Report_idle.txt Report_load.txt

1. Budget & Location My budget is around 600-750€ (~800usd). This is more of a guideline to show the budget I'm running. I'm more interested in the feedback and the ideas that you guys might have about my build plans. 2. Aim I'm looking for a build that I can run Photoshop and Lightroom with ease, general multimedia use (movies, music etc) and run games like Battlefield 4, Diablo 3 etc. at 1080p. 3. Monitors I'm planning on running one 23-24" fHD IPS monitor. 4. Peripherals No need for OS or peripherals. SSD and HDD are also taken care of atm, but will update them also in the future. 5. Why are you upgrading? I recently ran a problem with my old graphics card dying on me and I purchase a Asus GeForce GTX 750 TI OC and while changing it the old dream of building my own pc sprung to life. I've been "out of the game" for a while. My current pc is running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 with 4gb of DDR2. Current OS is Win7 ultimate 64bit, would appreciate comments on upgrading to Win8.1 or is it reasonable to wait for Win10? Here is the game plan: AMD FX-8320 Scythe Mugen 4 cooler G.Skills Ripjaws X 8gb (2x4gb) 1600MHz Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 Socket AM3+ Fractal Define R4 case GeForce 750 TI OC Old PSU: Cougar 550w 80+ bronze (This can be changed if needed) So that's what I've been thinking. The idea is to create a quiet, good looking pc which I can update in the future. I'm thinking about overclocking the CPU at some point as well. Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

I'm planning on building a new pc in the near future b/c my laptop is pretty bad. My build- http://pcpartpicker.com/p/YWHQgs I don't plan on OC my cpu so do i really need the aftermarket cooler? Will it make a huge difference if I get the cooler? By the way I'm pretty new to computer building.
