  1. TL;DR Trying to setup FTP server but can't because i'm a noob I have been trying to share some files with some friends. It's kind of a hassle to upload these files to my google Drive. And the amount of data is around 100 GB, so that isn't working. I found that making folder on my Windows PC "Shared" lets me access them very conveniently. Sadly, this doesn't work for my current problem, since I'll be sharing with people that aren't on my LAN. So I've gone as far as using the open source HFS. Again, this works on my LAN, but putting in 192.168.0.5 will definitely not give my friends access to my PC. So how might I go about this? I'm just looking for a direct way my friends might download stuff from my PC. Maybe there's a way they can use my IP address (which accesses my router, i guess?) and then it can redirect my router can redirect it to my PC? Any suggestions would be welcome
  2. Hello, I need some help. I've been trying to setup a ftp site on a old laptop as a remote access point for myself and another friend of mine for animation work. I have everything setup, ports are forwarded, permissions are setup, its allowed access through firewall, ive followed the steps, but none of my computers can see the site, web browers and file explorer doesn't see it, computers outside the network dont see it, nothing, its like it doesn't exist. it does say that it cant verify any paths to any file, external or internal as well. anyone have any idea why????
  3. My isp provides a free ftp server for easy access of movies, tv shows and games. I can access it easily with the ip addres(no login or Password is provide). But i can easily stream with it by copy the link adress and pesting it to a media player. But when i click the link it starts to download. How can i easily stream without switching between browser and media player on pc? I also use my android tablet mostly. Is there any browser with media player or a media player with browser. I use chrome and mx player. Thanks
  4. I have a computer next to me that I configured to be a FTP server through IIS. If I try to connect to the server through that computer (ftp://localhost), it works fine. But if I try to connect to the server from another computer, it acts like the server doesn't exist. I already enabled port forwarding and enabled FTP in Window Firewall and all that stuff. I'm a noob with networking and am quite confused right now. Please help.
  5. I keep using ftp and windows SMB share for file transfer and using CX File explorer to get files from to devices from pc and NAS . but instead of using the phone can I just put the file in my phone without picking it up and push file like any other ftp server samba share from my PC
  6. Hello LTT Community, I have just made a FileZilla FTP Server and it is working fine. Now I wanted to upload some website html but each time I enter the url in my browser it just tries to download it instead of opening the page. Is there any way i can get around this and just access it as website? Thanks in advance, ~Sven
  7. Hey guys, I need some assistance... I have a router (Strong AC1200) with a usb port and I want to setup a ftp server (external hdd) to use over internet, not only intranet. I'm struggling to do so... I only got it to work in my LAN so it's purely down to settings... Please, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  8. Hola! I am currently attempting to find a solution for my server needs. I want to be able to host my website locally, host a minecraft server locally, and an ftp server locally. I don't expect traffic to become overwhelming, but I want something more powerful than the core 2 duo I currently have. I am considering two options. Buiyng an older server off of ebay. Building a server from scratch with older parts. I do plan on making it into a rack, I just wanted to see suggestions before I made my mind. (Anything concerning internet speed is already taken care of.)
  9. I'm looking for a security camera that uses wifi and has a ftp connection so I can record to my server and not have to deal with a cloud. A vary important thing is that it's cord for power be no bigger then a coaxial TV cable, I rent and Can't drill big holes everywhere.
  10. Ok not sure if this is the right place for this so I'll move it to a different section if need be, But the problem, I at times need to retrieve a large file(s) from my home system on the go.. I use Google Drive atm but it's a lot of wasted time uploading then re-downloading I was hoping for a more streamline option... Like a non-cloud storage client that I can log into and directly copy files back and forth over then internet. I have seen "hard way" setups (home ftp etc) before but since my ISP doesn't have static IP's they are a pain to keep up even if I need to use my splashtop connection to start the transfer or move a file to a specific directory on the "server" side it will still save a lot time overall.. I don't mind a small fee like how Splashtop is about 25-30 USD a year for up to 5 systems, but much more then that isn't worth it for my use case.
  11. Hey ya'll, At work I have to set up a small LAN for a small exercise, so no internet. We are using old government Windows laptop that work fine, but their image is more restrictive than a regular consumer laptop. I am an administrator so I am able to change anything. I just need to know where to look. So I set up an FTP for people to drop off and edit documents, but I am unable to authenticate. I made a rule that any user can access the FTP, but I haven't had any luck. Seeing if it was user error, I followed the same steps I found online on my computer and was able to get the FTP up. I suspect that there is a group policy that is preventing me from authenticating from the local user accounts bank, but I don't know where to look. I am open to what anyone thinks on here. Thanks.
  12. Hi. I have a small FileZilla FTP running for familymembers to backup offsite (they have one too for my stuff) just in case. We've had them running for 8 years or so without any issues. We barely use them. Today a lot of attempted traffic caught my eye, and it looks like it's being attacked. I don't think anything got through, but I'm not sure what I should do. Any recommendations? I wouldn't want to limit access to only a few select addresses since we sometimes get new IPs and even use our phones if we need something randomly. Thank you for your input. https://pastebin.com/xmc2R3G2 *Replaced the host name IP with "serverIP:port" to avoid people 'checking it out'.
  13. Info about the IP camera: It's a CCTV camera, model TP-MS200IPL https://es.aliexpress.com/item/HD-1080-P-c-mara-IP-2-0MP-4-piezas-l-mparas-IR-P2P-POE-c/32870123277.html What I want to get: The IP camera can record live via FTP on a PC. This PC has the ftp server and a ftp client for testing the connection. I'm using Filezilla for both server and test client. Explanation of my current configuration: I have this camera in my current network, and there are no problems about connectivity. The ftp configuration of the IP camera is correct, as I'll show here: There is a button called "text", which sends a test file so you can check if the connection is ok. Here is what I get, so the connection is working: The red square in the screenshot shows the root directory of the admin user in the ftp (this user has full control on this root folder). When you click on test, the camera creates a folder whose name is the IP of the camera. Inside, it creates the sample file. Ok, so for now I have shown you the networking configuration, this part of the project is working properly. The next part is the configuration of the motion detect recording, and here is my configuration: As you can see is enabled, along with the trigger recording option, and its "Upload to FTP" checkbox. With all of this, the camera should start recording and sending via ftp to the PC when motion is detected. The problem is that this is not sending the video. But, what is funny is that the "Trigger snapshot" option, that basically starts taking shots when motion is detected, works properly and sends the data via ftp to the PC. What I can't understand is, what is the problem here? What is the difference between sending photos and sending live video? Thanks in advance if somebody can help
  14. So i have an old computer that was just lying around, doing nothing and i got bored and wanted to try and make a FTP server with it. I put Xubuntu, because normal ubuntu is too laggy and it just breaks it. I have got it set up so it works with file explorer in windows, but i want it to display the amount of storage it has, and has left, you know, like it does when you plug a USB stick in, or with your internal HDD/SSD, as shown in the picture that is hopefully going to attach if i can remember. As you can see in the image, the server does not show the blue bar thing and or the storage. Issue #2: When i try and view say, a video or picture off the server, it re-downloads it onto the device, is there anyway i can get it to just stream to the device?
  15. So myself and a friend are colaborating on a project (music) and I'd like to be able to send him files without having to upload them to a website for him to download. Is it possible I can map a network drive on his PC that links back to my server at my house? He's really not very tech savvy at all so a I feel like mapping a network drive is the simplest solution that doesnt require any logins (like a VPN or FTP) and that doesn't require me to upload files, send him the link, he downloads it, reuploads, sends me the link and so on. I have a computer running Windows Server 2016 that acts as a TeamSpeak server, a game hosting server and my own file storage server, which is on 24/7. Is this possible for me to do? Thank you!
  16. Hello I have a dell edge r610 running windows server 2016 decanter. I want to use this server as a ftp server so fare everything is working but I want to have a virtual directory but that directory is on a different PC that PC has the specific folder shared so it is accessible. But as soon as I set this directory as a virtual directory in the ftp server it gives me a error saying the following: The path does not exist or environment variables in the path could not be expanded to verify whether it exists. Is there any way to have a virtual directory that is on a different PC on the same network?
  17. Hello Every one! My family has built up huge amounts of data from, family photos, video, and music over the course of several years. As well as lots of documents that pose little to no security threat. Yes, I know I still need to keep good tight security for my network. I have ~4 TB of data to store. I would love to be able to have my family load up what ever data they want to back up onto this server from their home. I would also like to use this as my main mass storage for personal data at home I can upload over the local network or from another computer off site ( when I get more drives that will be optimal for this configuration). I am an experienced builder but lack in some basic network knowledge and have little experience with configuring a server. I plan on using the computer's CPU, MOBO,RAMM and Bootdrive, along with a spare mass storage HDD's I have now in my current main PC. Then I am going to keep, my PSU, GPU, CPU cooler, fans, case and upgrade to an I7 8700k, new AROSE Gigabyte z370 gaming 7 MOBO and some new ddr4 ramm. The old parts in my current build is going into a new case with a 4tb WD purple drive to test my server on. An AMD FX8370 CPU, a Gigabyte 970A-UD3 AM3+ socket MOBO, 16GB of G.SKILL DDR3 ram. A spare display GPU I have laying around for a monitor, a 125G SSD for the boot drive and a few misc small programs. - Will this hardware be enough for what I intend to do? Now, I am only using one 4TB drive to test out at first. I will get better drives in later on and set up a RAID Array. I plan on getting two large NAS drives (WD red or Seagate Iron Wolf? feedback - on what brand offers the better performance is appreciated) about 6-10TB in size and putting them into a RAID 1 array on the motherboard. - Now, I should be okay with a raid 1 array? I will just mirror the other drive correct? if one of the drives fails there is another one already backed up and then I simply just replace the bad drive correct? - For only having two drives at first and then plan on going to 4 total and my MOBO supports RAID 1, I won't need a RAID card necessarily right? Or will a RAID card help in the performance of the server? After Installing all the necessary hardware, getting windows and all the necessary drivers installed I plan on installing and using FileZilla server on the server it's self. And anyone els wanting to download or upload to the server will have to have the FileZilla client installed on there PC. -Am I right, this software will take care of all of my FTP and mass storage needs over a network? I know I need to port forward in my router and disable windows fire wall to allow Filezilla to talk with the outside world. I have a Netgear Night Hawk x6 ac3200Ti-Band Wifi Router that has a built in Gigabit Ethernet switch. - Will my computer and the server exchange data fairly well without hogging a lot of bandwidth on my network? Any help or insight is appreciated
  18. Hi, so I am trying to setup a FTP server from my Netgear router in order to use online functionality of a game. I want to set this up on my router (Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000) because that I already have a 2tb drive hooked up to it, and I don't have any server PCs or PCs that I run 24/7 to host the game files. I tried following all of the instructions from here and here, but I keep getting stuck on setting up the DDNS. I tried first setting it up through the netgear router utility - After filling out all of those fields, a message popped up saying it was successfully registered. However, when I try to sign on to the account, I get the message "Unable to complete the job, reason; Unable to locate hostname in your account. However, when I click manage account, the DDNS service shows up as active, and is even successfully retrieving the IP Addresses. I even created another hostname and tried to sign into that hostname through the no-ip option in the netgear utility, but that also did not work, although that did not produce an error message, just nothing happened. Is there something I am doing wrong? All I am trying to do is create a globally accessible FTP server that I can then input into a game (Out of the park baseball 17) so that I can play online multiplayer with my friends. If there is an easier way of doing this or anything, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks!
  19. Hello I'd like to start my own server based on Raspberry Pi at home. I'd like to have mail, web and ftp server, connection outside of home network. But I have no idea where to start, I can connect HDD to Raspberry Pi to work as a storage, but have no idea about which Rasp to buy and how to configure whole stuff to work outside of my home net. Sorry post might be little chaotic :c Thanks for help tho.
  20. Ik finally ready to setup networking right at new house and realy don't want to use WiFi if possible. I sometimes hate my self because of that Is there any real reason to use FTP CAT6 instead of UTP if network cables will run outside wall and no way near 220 power lines. Only 3-5 meters will be two network cables next to each other. With network cables I will connect 2 computers 1 tv Freenas sever In total about 40-50 meters of cable. And about Modular plugs. I'm only seen cat6 plugs for UTP cables but does it mater?
  21. I currently run a local FTP server on a old prebuilt machine that I slapped some extra storage in. It more or less works as intended, but I can't help but feel I'm not getting enough out of it, and there are weird side effects to this - transfers sometimes go in "bursts", etc. Is FTP really a proper protocol to be using over LAN, and what would you recommend that would not bring any issues with lower powered machines (core 2 duo, windows 7 etc.) SMB interests me after seeing Linus's 10gbit networking video, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Windows/cross platform is a bonus. If its a big enough improvement, I'll consider switching the PC over to a light linux distro (it is also a Plex machine.) edit: Also, if it's easy to set up for my friends, whever they stay over with their rig for a few days, this is a great bonus.
  22. Hi. Recently I bought a Synology NAS and I tried configuring FTP but I can't seem to get it to work. SFTP works, but not all apps on mobile supports SFTP and the speed is rather slow. I have forwarded port 21 and 22 on my dlink router already. Neither FTP or FTPS works. I have attached ftptest and the ftp config page on my Synology NAS. Is there a wrong configuration somewhere that causes this?
  23. So I've been using 000webhost.com to host an FTP server for my Visual Studio program, it has been working, but just recently I've been having problems with it and it seems that the free domains have been having issues that are being worked on, but I need a working FTP server without using my router for my program ASAP and for free. Anyone know a good free site I can use so I can upload a small zip file that can be downloaded by my program?
  24. 25. I currently have cascading routers. The first router is an Actiontec given by my ISP. Connected to that is my Nighthawk R7000 which currently has all of the wireless networks on it. I have connected and configured my drive on the netgear router and it works from within the local network. I am unable to connect to it outside of my local network and I am unsure why. I have port forwarded ports 21 & 443 (TCP) on the Actiontec -> ip of netgear. The netgear should automatically port forward these ports as the ftp server is running on it. Is this how I should be setting this up? I also have an ip cam that is connected to the netgear router with the same port forwarding situation (different port) and that works fine.
