Hello everyone, I bought two WD gold 8tb drives to put in my NAS running freenas os, I set up the the pool with mirror configuration and with Encryption. I expect the raw capacity to be a little under 8tb (7.3tb real capacity) but I only got 6,3 tb of capacity. I know there is some overhead for the ZFS and the Encryption and I understand that the drive is not exactly 8tb as advertised but more than one 1tp missing capacity is much more than I expected and I feel I messed something up. I did not have any custom options enabled just the default options in freenas for Pool setup. Can you please tell me what do you think, and if there are a better options or if I did something wrong? I hope you have a nice day!

Hello. The title pretty much says it all. I was wondering what would happen to a software raid zfs array in freenas if the sata controller on the motherboard or an HBA the drives were connected to happened to fail. Would it be as simple as replacing the HBA or the motherboard and everything will be fine as long as the boot drive is okay? Or would data recovery professionals be the way to go? I know dealing with hardware raid card failures is a huge pain, but is it the same for zfs?

Hey guys, been a while since I've been on here!, anyways im looking to build a unique maybe server to store huge amounts of semi-medium files (mp3, WAV, ACID-WAV, AIFF, MP4 and PSD, AI, INDD, CAD, C4D, High res JPEGs/PNGs also looking for best compression algorithm for storing/compressing PSD, AI, INDD, CAD, C4D Etc. then also storing/compressing WAV. I have over 3 TB of big wav files ranging from 30-500MB different library's of genre music making files, other files for other projects, because I don't know what to do in life right now lmao. but yeah, I got a LSI MegaRAID on the way, heard it's pretty good for RAID 6 and another LSI card 9211-8i on the way too for my other NAS I wanna build or server. or just a backup card incase the first one dies for what ever reason XD so what you guys recommend I got 2x1TB Seagate drives (home ones) and 3 random 500GB-1TB drives different makers laying around and could use them as spares along the RAID 6 Array also what compression algorithm? best? mainly looking for best compression at a good or average speed (compressing) and decompression idc about atm but say I want both of both worlds what's good? im currently using LZMA/LZMA2 and ZSTD compression algorithm

Please and thank you before I start, any help appreciated and if this exists else where and isn't 1-3 years old, point me at it. Also If this would be better suited somewhere else, point me there too. I want to transition from FreeNAS to something more capable, as I need GPU pass through for a VM, but I literally barely know how to use FreeNAS. I have managed to set it up how I like and the less difficult the transition, the better. I understand that I may need to rebuild my arrays from scratch. I understand I will have to redo the iocage/jails/plugins that FreeNAS currently has “perfectly” setup. I guess, first question: Can I move a real FreeNAS install, to a VM FreeNAS in an Unraid install? Second question: Do I need to move them, couldn’t I just point to the USB as a boot drive and it would just “work”? Or no? Question the third: Does someone have step by step instructions for me to follow? Fourth: Is my server powerful enough? It handles FreeNAS fine, but the dinky VM I currently use, feels so under powered. Allocated 4 cores and 8gb of ram. And the last question: If not Unraid, then what? Cost for Unraid is not unreasonable for a setup that is better than my experience with FreeNAS. Ie zero data loss in 4 years, but countless plugin rebuilds. For some reason eventually they just didn’t work properly anymore, and an upgrade of FreeNAS and new installs of plugins was a major hassle, but doable. Requirements I’d like to add an RTX2070 for VM use and set up a VM. Also if I have to rebuild from scratch, set up either 16x4TB-(2x4TB)=~56TB for 2 drive failure, or 16x4TB-(4x4TB)=~48TB for 4 drive failure. Current Server Configuration: Software OS = FreeNAS 11.3-U5 Plugins = Plex Pass, Sonarr, Radarr, MineOS VM = Ubuntu 18.04, running PIA and Transmission Hardware CPU = 2x Intel Xeon X5675 @ 3.07GHz RAM = 6x SK Hynix 16GB 2Rx4 PC3L-10600R-9 DDR3 1333 ECC Motherboard = ASUS Z8NA-D6C HBA = 2x SAS 9211-8i Boot USB RAID 1 = 2x Toshiba 32GB Pool: System RAID 1 ZFS = 2x 2TB WD RED Pool: NAS RAIDZ2 ZFS = 16x 4TB WD RED Case = Chenbro RM41416 4U Rackmount Power Supply = 3x Emacs MX1-5375p 375W (in n+1 Redundancy) Cooler = 2x Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performer C

This, this is my final FreeNAS and Nextcloud post. So I've gotten to the point of NextCloud and FreeNAS working together but I can only use the destination of /iocage/jails/NextCloud/root/media/ I have user folders setup and that's where all my data is, is there a way to use a different destination than /media/ or is there a way to make a folder in /media/? Whenever I try to make a folder in /media/ through Windows I don't have permission, is there a way to make a folder within /media/ via something like nano in shell? That's what it's set as right now but I want to make it so I can add /mnt/ActualNAS/banana or something to that extent to a destination that's readable by NextCloud. If any more information is needed, I can provide. FreeNAS Version: 11.3-U3.1 Nextcloud Version: v21

This should be my final post on my FreeNAS saga. So I've been trying to get my NAS to be remote accessible via NextCloud through a DDNS but the DDNS only takes me to my router login. How would I go about routing the DDNS to go to my Nextcloud page on 192.168.0.48:8282? Router: CODA-4852 DDNS Service: afraid.org FreeNAS Version: 11.3-U3.1 Nextcloud Version: v21 If any additional information is needed just ask

I am try to rig an old laptop with FreeNAS and want to keep windows just incase I want to revert back. I have a C: drive and D: drive. I want the C drive to have the freenas but it turns out it has Windows 10 on it. Can I just move it to the D drive or is there something to do? The reason I want to do it on the c drive is because it has more storage on it.

Hi all, I'm after some advice please, currently moving everything away from a Synology 2 bay to a DIY Node 304. Synology is going to be used a local photo storage etc similar to iCloud and Gdrive. Node 304 will be used for everything since the Synology is underpowered and doesn’t have enough bays. Node 304 usage: Mass data storage (Currently bought 3 x 18TB ready to be shucked) A couple of VMs for testing and running for file extraction organising etc Docker containers for app specific uses when a dedicated OS isn’t needed. Jdownloader as example. Streaming movies locally Might run my capture card direct to it to use the storage. Parts I already have: Case:Node 304 PSU:Corsair CP-9020177-UK RM550x 80 PLUS Gold 550 W Storage: 3 x 18TB. Parts needed: OS CPU Motherboard RAM Im at a loss on which OS / CPU / Mobo and RAM to buy. I looking for something that is very power efficient doesn’t use a lot of wattage since I’d want this to be available 247. - Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to fix this for days, I use a Freenas server for just about everything, I use one SMB share that works fine on my laptop running Endeavor OS and my sisters Macbook. My desktop usually runs Garuda but I broke the install and probably switching to Artix. So for now i'm using Windows 10. I have tried, tried remapping the drive but no dice. For whatever reason despite the server clearly being online and using it daily, Windows claims it's offline and won't let me log in. I've followed a ton of tutorials but haven't made any progress. How can I get this server back online?

Hey guys. so I posted a while back about is it worth running a NAS on this hardware and people said yes. So I want to post an update I am currently using it to host discord bots via Ubuntu Server 20 LTS. I want to convert it into a NAS. I have external drives that I can connect. The laptop is connected to a cooling pad to play it safe and prevent overheating. What OS would you guys recommend I was thinking Unraid but its paid and I cant really afford a license so I thought TrueNAS / FreeNAS but when I googled if its ok on a laptop threads said no so I got scared. I want to get peoples opinion before I install The Purpose of the nas is to Store Music, Movies, Pictures and Documents. Possibly to be able to play videos and movies from a phone. Also to backup my main PC so if something goes wrong my stuff is backed up Laptop Name: Lenovo Thinkpad X201 CPU: Intel Core i5-5200m Integrated GPU: Intel HD RAM: 6 GB of Ram

Need help for TrueNAS setup and deployment
HunterSailor posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Greetings all, There is so much information regarding setting up NAS and in so many different ways. I have an i5 3570,16GB Ram, 16GB SSD(boot), and 1 TB of HDD, and all this is strictly for testing purposes right now. The final hardware will be different. My goal is to consolidate media(movies & music) for myself and only my friends(max 7) to access it from anywhere(NOT just locally) through PCs and android phones. For initial setup I have installed TrueNAS using these instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wya16ef1G-E Have set up Static IP for the NAS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUodt6_e5KA and made a pool(striped) using these instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnRaWED9QN8 Is only one user sufficient or do I need multiple users and what kind of sharing type do I need which is secure too? I would like to know what is further set up to suits my needs and goals mentioned earlier. I'm absolutely new to all this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks -
Hey guys, I wanted to ask for some advice for a capstone project I have in which I want to build a server that can run multiple VMs and Docker Containers for applications. I wanted to know what kind of CPU I should go for that can have the capabilities for these requirements. Since I'm on a tight budget, I'm going to use the spare parts I have: M.2 Gen 3x2 256GB with Read speeds 1000MB/s and Write speeds 800MB/s 8GB (2x4) 2666MHz RAM (Non ECC) I know that the Non ECC will cause more corruption but I just need the RAM for this project. I'll get the PSU, Motherboard and Case but I wanted to get an idea for a CPU that can run what I require of the FreeNAS server (TrueNAS). I was thinking a Ryzen 3 3200G which I found for $140 CAD since it has an integrated GPU. I know of the short comings of the Ryzen series in a NAS server (can't use ECC RAM and capabilities limited) but due to the requirements of VMs as well as running apps on the Docker container, I think it will be ok. If a cheap Intel CPU can run the server just fine, I'll probably pick that up but I don't know about it's iGPU if it will run well under that load. I'm open to any suggestions.

Hello, I've set up the server and installed the NextCloud plugin, yet i cant seem to find my files that I've saved to NextCloud. I found a folder with the NextCloud info (seen in the path below), but I cant get access to it unless i share every folder through the ACL. \\PEPE-SAD-FROG\Mass Storage\iocage\jails\CloudServer\root\usr\local\www What I would like to be able to do, is to open a file through file explorer, save a document there, and be able to access it from any of my devices through either file explorer or the NextCloud app. Eventually I would like to make the server so i can access it from anywhere but that isnt on my agenda this week. I would appreciate your input and help cause I'm pretty stuck. This is my first time working with servers. Thanks. Edit: I know NextCloud is saving files to my TrueNAS server, because I'll upload a file on NextCloud and the "storage used" tab increases under storage pools in TrueNAS. But I still have no idea where its saving the files at. Please help

HI im not sure with LTT already did a nice video covering that topic if not I would love to see a a buid. I was thinking about replacing my current QNAP with a more silent one which only uses SDD. And I actually found one from QNAP but not sure it is a current setting or already eol (tbs-453dx) Which made me think if I could build it myself, because that way i might be able to get a bit better CPU than the once in the QNAP, a very silent CPU cooler should still be an option. My requirement would be: * Small Factor Motherboard with good CPU support with at least 4 NVMe M.2 slots supported. * support by Open Scource NAS Projects ( e.g. FreeNas/TrueNas or similar) * Support for the big NVMe Drives 2/4GB, like the one Linus got from Sabrent for the Whonnock 3 * at least 2.5 GBit support * USB-3 / USB-C Support * 16 better 32 GB RAM Support * all fitted into a cool but small Case the size of a DVD-Player, Nuc or similar to like QNAP-453 case sizes * HDMI 4k Support * no gaming suport ( e.g. expensive GFX) required. = Budget 2k-ish ( i know 4GB ssd are quite expensive atm) any thought?

So I recently copied over some .isos, namely Manjaro and Arch over to my NAS just to have them in a pinch if I need them when I'm somewhere. I'm trying to move them to a new folder so they're not just unorganized on my NAS but the files won't move or delete. The error: You require permission from Unix User\www to make changes to this file I have no clue why it's doing this. Computer accessing from is a Windows 10 Desktop FreeNAS-11.3-U5 running on the NAS Just a minor inconvenienced that's quite annoying that I want to nip in the butt before I forgot to.

So about a month ago my ISP reset my router (can't remember what for) and it in a way broke my FreeNAS box. Whenever I boot it, it doesn't give me an IP through DCHP. I tried making it static, it accepted it but then it doesn't give me the message of "The web user interface is at http://192.168.0.48" It just gives me that, I honestly have no clue what to do to fix it, I've tried to set it in every way possible (to my knowledge). FreeNAS-11.3-U5 is the version that's currently running If any additional information is needed, I got you. I just want my NAS back up and running after everything I went through with it.

I recently purchased a new Synology D220+ to replace my DIY FreeNAS server, and am currently migrating data across...sloooooowly! Due to the construction of our house, hard wired ethernet isn't an option. The old FreeNAS box is connected to the net work via a switch, which is connected via Powerline to the network. The new Synology box is also connected to the same switch. I've mounted a couple of the drives from each NAS in Windows Explorer and am migrating from one to the other that way. Average transfer speeds is 1MB/s After some research it looks like the best option is to create an NFS share on the Synology and mount a remote FreeNAS folder. On the Synology side I've managed to get this far https://imgur.com/a/59cWtT9 But when I click mount I get "Connection failed. Please make sure the remote server is accessible via NFS" So, on the FreeNAS side, all I've done is enabled NFS under services, and created an NFS share (simply added new NFS share and browsed to the folder path) I'm a bit out of my depth on the FreeNAS side, to say the least. Any help would be massively appreciated

So I've recently set up a NAS on some old hardware that I had laying around plus some newer drives and I'm only getting 100baseTX on the NAS despite it being capable of Gigabit. Specs: i3-4160 16GB of DDR3 Gigabyte motherboard (if the model is needed I'll edit it in) 3x 4TB WD Blue 5400RPM 240GB ADATA SU835 Hitron CODA-4582 router All over ethernet into a motherboard that supports gigabit and a router that also supports gigabit. Currently getting around 11MBps transfer speeds between my computer and the NAS with both being on Ethernet and both being capable of Gigabit speeds. Edit: CAT6 to my PC and CAT5E to the NAS.

TL;DR - How do I get a pool back online? How do I find the device name of my NAS? Hello, So over the past couple of months my Plex server became unreachable from people outside of my own network saying Plex to be upgraded. At the time i had FreeNAS 11.2. So I tried everything I knew (not much lol) and I googled for the answer on trying to update PLEX and the plugin. After trying everything, i discovered that it could be that I am on an older OS and freenas has switched over to truenas (I don't keep up with server tech. I built this thing a couple of years ago and set it up and forgot it.). So I went onto the web interface for my server and decided to upgrade the OS. The only trains available were 11.3 and 12.3 nightly beta. I decided to update to 11.3 in hopes that 12.0 would show up after the update (it did but when I try to switch to that train an error pops up.). So I switched trains to 11.3, which took literally 12 hours to install, so slow. After the install, it now says that my pool is offline. I only have one pool on the system. So how do I get it back online? I don't know how to do that. I've tried the command in the shell # zpool online "pool name" "device name" . However there is a slight problem, i don't know the name of my device. The pool name is Datacron. I looked all over the web UI and have only found the host name being Freenas. When i enter those names into the command it says it "cannot open Datacron: no such pool."' I don't know how to fix this. Thank you for reading

Just got a server configured with Freenas and plex for the only plugin. Two days ago I created an SMB share and was able to move movies and tv shows into it. However yesterday it lost connection to it and since then I haven't been able to get it back. In addition to this plex can no longer see the movies I loaded into it and only gives me. Playback Error Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted. Is there any way to get windows 10 to connect to the SMB share and plex to see the files again or should I just delete everything and try over again. Thanks for any assistance.

So i built a new PC, Yay! My older gaming laptop (Still in a good shape, and still quite powerful) is now idle. Specs as follows: 6700HQ GTX 980M 64GB RAM 256 NVME + 1TB SSD I'm planning on using this PC as a server/entertainment device, connected to a TV in my living room. So i need to be able to: 1) stream games of my new PC for a console like experience. 2) create VMs (Linux and Windows). 3) run docker (for work, offloading from the new PC) At home, we use cloud backup, and online media streaming. So a plex server or a backup server is not something we care about. One of the VMs will be running moonshine (4K games streaming). So i need a GPU passthrough What bare metal OS is the best for this scenario? i am looking at both FreeNas and Unraid. But not sure which to chose, and unaware of other better options to consider. What do you think?

Dear Community I turned my old PC into a NAS with FreeNAS, everything works so far. A couple weeks ago I setup a lancache for games on a VM with docker. This works too but I noticed there is a bottleneck in my setup. After some tests I figured out, the cabeling in my flat is the bad guy. So there we are now, what I have and what I want: I bought two NIC (Asus XG-c100c), drivers on both, my Gaming PC (Win10) and FreeNAS (11.2) are installed. PC and FreeNAS connected with Cat6. My expectation is to get a direct access from my PC to the NAS over the NIC and to the Internet over the onboard interface. The connections right now: PC to Switch with onboard interface (for Internet) PC to NAS witch NIC (for lancache) NAS to PC with NIC NAS to Switch with onboard interface I want to download with 10 Gb from my lancache and my lancache should download the game if it is not yet in the cache. I've read about different ways to do it but no solution looks like my setup. LAPP-, VLAN- and Bridge-Guides I've already read not used them yet. I'd like to get some pointers on what I have to set up on my NAS and maybe on my PC. Sincerely Manu My Setup: PC: Mainboard Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 Processor Intel Core i7-4790K @4.00GHz RAM 32 GB Ethernet-Interface Killer 2200 (onboard) NIC ASUS XG-c100c 10G PCI-E Network adapter NAS: Mainboard Asus AMD Crosshair IV Formula Processor AMD Phenom II X6 1100T (6 cores) RAM 2x4GB and 2x8 GB (not optimal but works, somehow) Ethernet-Interface ??? (onboard)(msk0) NIC ASUS XG-c100c 10G PCI-E Network adapter (aq0)

I am looking for a 10Gb SFP NIC for my HPE ProLiant DL380 G9 Sever that I run FreeNAS on. I would like to be under $50. What is the best option that is compatible with both the server and FreeNAS? Used is preferred at this price point.
-
Budget (including currency): Sub $250 if possible, USD Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: FreeNAS\TrueNAS? unRAID? Some Linux distro? Something like that. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): So the odds seem good that a prebuilt NAS would be more power efficient and easier to work with but I want something I can mess around with and change if I feel like it. I basically want something I can use as my own cloud storage, and to stream via Plex or Emby. Maybe back up my actual desktop to. I have an old PSU, case, Keyboard & Mouse, AM4 compatible air cooler, etc. So my cost is just in the core components here. I was thinking an Asus Prime B450M or Prime A520M? They seem reasonable for the low price. I'm mostly just wondering what the cheapest APU would be that would boot in either. Maybe Ill have to stick in a graphics card but if I can I would rather avoid it considering what it's going to be for. Might help with transcode for plex? Also 8-16Gb of cheap ram. Seems like a lot but apparently if I use ZFS, min requirement is 8Gb. So I was considering something like an Athalon 3000G or 200/220G. Would these work? I am ok with used parts, ebay, whatever. The problem is even these low end processors that retailed for $50 are $120+ now. Any recommendations of what would work well for this? This isn't a system that's going to get hit hard. Two users streaming at once max, I have two 4tb WD red hard drives and various other old drives I may shove in there.

I'm in need of some help finding a good backup solution for my homelab. Currently I'm running a TrueNAS Core server with about 10 TB of backup storage available. I used to backup my Windows machines using Acronis True Image, however I want to get away from running the backup directly on the workstations and move that workload to the server if I can. So, a server to client approach would be nice, tell me if I'm crazy for wanting this in my home lab. Currently, I have one Windows 10 workstation, one Linux workstation that is being used as a Minecraft server, and a VM running Linux for my NextCloud environment and a Jail for Plex. I do plan to be adding more VM's and Jails as I get the priority services up and running in my homelab. I primarily like to use Ubuntu as my Linux server of choice if that helps sway the thought process. I've looked into different solutions such as running VEEAM on a Windows server 2019 VM in TrueNAS, however VEEAM must not like the bhyve environment because it will always fail during the SQL install and I can't figure out why. I've looked into the Asigra plugin and simply didn't like it because it felt unintuitive and the fact that it was using Java, no thank you. I've looked at some of the other backup plugins in TrueNAS and wasn't really impressed, but maybe that's what you get with free? If anyone has any sort of suggestions or can point me in the right direction on how I can approach backing up all of my servers and workstations to my NAS, would be greatly appreciated. In the end, if it makes more sense to just run backup software on the workstations and servers themselves then what kind of good Linux back solutions are out there that I could use? Thanks
