  1. So, I figured I'd add another to the ranks of the PC Master Race. My daughter is turning in the next week, and has enjoyed playing Minecraft on my PC, so I decided to mark the occasion by collecting parts and modding a case for her. After her birthday we'll assemble it together. I figured I'd add a little build log for her machine too, seeing as I finally watercooled my own a little while back and I was getting anxious to start another mini project. I'll provide a link below to the PCpartpicker parts list, though I'll warn you much of it is hand-me-down parts, and it's not designed for earth-shattering performance. Just something for homework / 1080p gaming. I already tore down most of the case, as you can tell... this paint job is going to be a tad bright... OK, its borederline obnoxious. She's going to love it. I also snagged a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate (2013) off Kijiji for super cheap, the font was going to be a bit much for a first grader to read, so I swapped the keycaps for my factory Corsair ones off my K70. I also happened to have an eVGA Torq X10 kicking around that I won off an online giveaway like 4 years ago. It should fit the bill!
  2. It's my second build and the cable management is not so great, I know. I'm also holding up the AIO cpu cooler with a pair of screws on one side and a couple of zip ties since it barely fits. Build: Motherboard - ASUS ROG Strix X570-I Gaming CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 RAM - TeamGroup T-Force DDR4 CL16 Delta RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) SSD - Western Digital WD Blue SN550 M.2 2280 250GB HDD - Seagate BarraCuda 2TB GPU - MSI Radeon RX 5700 Gaming X 8GB PSU - Corsair HX750i 80+ Platinum CPU Cooler - Fractal Design Celsius S24 Blackout Fans - Deepcool RF120 RGB Aura Sync Pack Deepcool RF140 RGB Aura Sync Pack Case - Fractal Design Meshify C Mini Dark TG Yup that's my reflection.
  3. As the title says which one are better? (Who is quieter, has better air flow etc...)
  4. Please read before replying with "Just hold the stand-off and then unscrew the screw from the other side". I can't do that. I bought a Fractal Design R6 and a Gigabyte motherboard, I had to remove one of the stand-offs that came pre-installed with the case because maybe some of you know Gigabyte puts one of their holes in the wrong place. Anyway, I removed it and put it back where it should be and installed the motherboard. Thing is then I wanted to take the motherboard out to be 110% sure that I there weren't any other stand-offs hitting the board. I checked before like 5 times, but I'm paranoid and wanted to check again. I'm sure there aren't any stand-offs hitting it, but again I'm paranoid. Thing is when I tried to take the motherboard out, one of the screws unscrewed the stand-off. Not the one I installed, but the one on the left side, the one where the PCI slots are. I tried to unscrew it but it kept making noises, like a pop, so I stopped. I tried to take the motherboard out, but it's stuck. So I assume the screw is stuck in the stand off while the stand off is stuck in the case. I can't psychically reach the stand off to hold it in place so I can unscrew it. How do I remove it? How can I take the motherboard out without damaging it? Do I just have to unscrew the screw which will force the stand-off to unscrew itself and then be careful while pulling the motherboard?
  5. Hey, so i'm a new builder and I would like to ask if the SilentiumPC Spartan 3 Pro would fit in the Fractal Design Core 1000, btw I have a Ryzen 5 2400g, and will be putting an RX 570 8gb soon. I will be overclocking the cpu.
  6. So I'm getting ready to build my first PC. I've chosen almost everything, except a case. I've narrowed it down to a few contenders but I'm not sure which I should go for (I like all of them in their own way). I'd love to get feedback about the user-friendliness of building/cable management in each case. I want something clean and appealing but still have good lighting since all have a glass side panel. Thank you so much in advance for helping me out The Top Contending Cases Are: Fractal Design Meshify C NZXT H500i Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV ATX TG The build they'll be housing can be found here
  7. Im looking at getting the FD R6 And i was wondering if any one has had any bad experiences with it. What im looking at is quietness, Cable managment dificulties, Cable length issues, ECT. I hear that power cable lengths is an issue.
  8. I bought the Define R6 case. I like everything about this case, except for the void created when you move the hard drive wall back. I've been informed by someone at Fractal Design that the "PSU Cover Bracket" from the Define S2 "Can technically fit in the R6." Quoted the email from Fractal Design. Fractal Josh, could you help me out if you see this? Anyone else, do you have an S2? Are you using that cover? If anyone has a gray one they aren't using, I would love to get ahold of one! This part should really be included with the R6. I have white cables, so they are VERY visible from certain angles. Any help would be GREAT!
  9. Like the title says which case is more good ? 1.NZXT H500 2.Fractal Design Meshify C or any recommendation? Looking for case with good airflow & great cable management For Mini Itx Motherboard & MSI RTX 2060 gaming z
  10. Hey everyone! Decided to do some modding to my case and was wondering if anyone knew of a shop or somewhere online where I can order tempered glass side panels and frames and such for the Meshify C series cases. I have a Meshify C White but am looking to mod it and customize it a bit and I really like the dark tempered glass side panels that come on the Dark TG version. I've checked the Fractal Design website and around a couple other "parts" retailers but can't find any Meshify C TG panels just R6 TG panels.
  11. So I currently have a pretty decent PC that I bought about 4 years ago? I think, it may be plus-minus 1 year in there. This is it: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/DanielCofour/saved/#view=knJ8Mp But now I'm thinking of doing a tiny bit of an upgrade, and by tiny bit I mean go overkill. Primary goal of upgrade is cpu then gpu, which also means new Mobo and memory. So these would be the parts that I chose: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/DanielCofour/saved/#view=CkP3t6 . (the RTX Ti may be too much of an overkill, I'm considering just going for something more sensible, like 1080 Ti, but I don't know yet, GPU will be a separate purchase anyway, so I'll see when I get there). Direct link here: Edit: been reading a bit more about getting a 280mm setup for the Define R4 and it seems that it would require modding, and in general fitting even a 240mm fan at the top of the case can be a pain, so updated the build with an R6, might as well upgrade the case, what the hell. PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU Intel - Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor $489.99 @ B&H CPU Cooler Corsair - H115i PRO 55.4 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler $119.99 @ Newegg Motherboard Asus - PRIME Z390-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $188.99 @ Amazon Memory Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $98.99 @ Amazon Memory Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $98.99 @ Amazon Video Card Asus - GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB ROG Strix Gaming OC Video Card $1344.99 @ Newegg Case Fractal Design - Define R6 USB-C Blackout - TG ATX Mid Tower Case $181.98 @ SuperBiiz Total $2523.92 I checked, and from my limited knowledge of PC building, there shouldn't be any issue with merging these parts into my old PC. I'm still keeping the 720W platinum PSU from that, since I think it can handle the increased wattage as well the Fractal Design Define R4 case, since as far as I can tell, I can fit a liquid cooling solution into it and I've grown attached to that minimalistic swedish beauty(not happening, since liquid cooling can be a bit of a pain in this case apparently). However, I'm not an expert and I could miss some things, so any sort of feedback is appreciated. I'm specifically looking for noise level. I know FD cases are very quiet, so if anyone has the H115i cooler, I would like to know what's your experience with it's noise level. 1. Budget & Location Budget is as high as it needs to be to achieve the aim(see below). Location is Romania, where prices are comparable to US prices. Difference is usually about +2-3% from what I can see. 2. Aim This would double as both a high-end gaming machine, but also a workspace, though leaning towards gaming rig rather than workspace, since I would only use it for work(which currently is web development, but thinking of transitioning towards game development) if I'm working from home. I'm also going black-white combo, little-to-no RGB. Aesthetic feedback that fits this style is also appreciated. 3. Monitors So far I have two 1080p mid-range monitors that I've bought 3 years ago. After the PC upgrade I'm planning on transitioning towards higher resolution. Still haven't decided on 2k - high hertz or 4k version. 4. Peripherals Have them, they're good, don't need to buy anything else. 5. Why are you upgrading? Because I can and I want to. Simple as that. Gaming is still okay on that i5 and 970 Strix, but I have been slowly and steadily moving from max settings when I first got this to lower ones. But working on this is noticeably slower than on a macbook pro, which is just unacceptable for a PC. Running all the tools and programs I need for work is putting a toll on my old beauty. So I would like to do an upgrade that will last me for the next 4+ years, barring any unforeseen issues.
  12. I'm going for a micro-atx build but I'm unsure as to which case to buy. I'm considering going for the Fractal Design Focus G Mini but there's the Coolermaster Q300L that's 5 quid cheaper and I don't know which'll be better... But I'm also tempted to increase my budget and go for the Fractal Design Meshify C Mini or Define C Mini since these two cases both look really nice and have very good reputations in build quality and airflow. I really don't know so I need your help. As of posting this, that rig has already been torn apart and transformed back to an air-cooled rig for the time being, the GTX 980 was traded for a R9 390x, and it's noisy. I've contemplated for several days, if I even wanted to do an upgrade, and which platform I would go to if I were to upgrade. An AsRock Z97 Extreme6 and an i7 5775c was my primary choice as I didn't have to change the memory, but for the price of a 5775c, I couldn't do it. Other option was x99, but the motherboard were expensive, and buying new RAM was also expensive, but an i7 5820k was much cheaper than a i7 5775c and has more raw power, so there was that factor. But what set my path with x99 was the fact I found a lightly used Asus X99 Deluxe at my local Microcenter for 161.96USD and my girlfriend was willing to sponsor me for the DDR4. So here I am with this build log. Yes, the system will be watercooled, but it won't be anytime soon. Still got Project Mochii to finish... 14. Introduction As a person older than Linus, there're three things that get on your nerves the longer you're around: slow computers, fan noise, and that damned bright RGB radiation. Now that I have kids too, all I want is some god-d***ed peace and quiet. So when I decided to build a new work/play rig I decided that focusing on performance and noise would come first, LEDS can be fixed with a wire cutter or a hammer. I put together a Ryzen 1600 build pretty cheaply using the stock cooler and an old aluminum Thermaltake Tsunami case, but the noise was terrible. The Aluminum case reverbed all the noise, the fan on the stock Ryzen cooler clicked at certain speeds, and it ran hot. It was time to go to war. After endless comparisons of air vs water, how silence vs mesh cooling perf, I ended up deciding on the Fractal Design Meshify C case and the Thermalright Le Grande Macho RT air cooler. I wanted to see if you could have a mesh case, good cooling, AND almost no noise. Test Specifications Common Hardware AMD Ryzen 1600 at Stock & 3.6 Ghz Overclock speeds Asus PRIME X370-PRO Motherboard EVGA SuperSC 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory @ 2933 speed Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD MSI GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card SeaSonic PRIME Titanium 750W PSU Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Paste Measurements & Methodology We will be measuring Noise and Temperature readings for each setup iteration. To generate as much load and heat as possible, IntelBurnTest (IBT) and Furmark (FM) will be run at the same time. IBT will run a Standard Stress Test utilizing all cores/threads, and FM will run the “GPU stress test” at 1920x1080. Noise Noise will be measured using the Niosh Sound Level Meter App for iPhone, which is a free calibrated app for collecting A-weighted noise measurements. It will be measured while idle, and at the end of the testing cycle at two locations: 15cm diagonal to the front/left corner of the case to simulate the PC on the desk 1 meter diagonal to the front/left/top vertex corner of the case, which tends to be where my head is while sitting in a chair with the case on the floor under the desk. The environment will be as controlled as possible, with HVAC, refrigerators, and other noise generating sources turned off. Tests are run during quiet times, which resulted in an approximately 22dB background noise level. Temperature Temperature readings will be collected using HWiNFO, and logged to CSV for analysis. The environment will be as controlled as possible, with HVAC keeping the room steady at 22C, and only shutoff at the beginning and end of tests to measure noise levels. Variables Tested We will be testing the following setup iterations: Old Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case + Stock AMD Wraith Spire cooler Fractal Design Meshify C case + Stock AMD Wraith Spire cooler Fractal Design Meshify C case + Thermalright Le Grande Macho RT cooler Fan setup iterations on #3 Fractal Design Meshify C Review Since we’ve all seen 10 unboxing videos with slow panning 4k b-roll, techno music, and small plastic potted plants, I’ll skip to my thoughts from the build: Pros Love the design Front panel has a nice “low-poly” design, should help hide dents / damage over time Rim of front panel reminds me of a jet engine intake cowl, brings images of airflow Tempered Glass and good airflow for $89 Has decent supplied fans Case feels solid for how light it is The power LED is subtle, very nice for us anti-rgb crowd Cons Stripped out two motherboard mounts while installing them with not much force. Tight fit with my longer 175mm PSU, can’t see using HDD cage with this size PSU, especially with my meaty mitts. Could not find a nice way to route the USB 3.0 cable for the front panel. It’s nearly too big to fit through the middle shroud hole, and then has to take a 90° turn to hit the motherboard header. This also resulted in a strained diagonal cable across the back of the case, so I went through the large grommeted holes to the right of the motherboard. Leaks sound like a screen door (who knew?). You will hear your crappy CPU cooler fans and coil whine from your motherboard or graphics board. Since it’s mesh on top, front, and back, the noise might bounce off more surfaces in your room, and into your ear. Design Improvement Suggestions Would have been nice to get a solid Moduvent for the top if you don’t need the extra mesh / venting. Would have been nice to have some soundproofing on the metal side panel. Would have been nice to have a 140mm fan support on the back instead of 120mm USB3.0 front panel cable needs to be longer to use with the supplied shroud hole. A more flexible connector for the end of the USB3.0 front panel cable would be nice for tight turns. A shroud hole for GPU power would be nice too. Front and backmost shroud holes could be bigger / have rubber grommets. Front IO could have been on separate panel so it’s not attached to the removable door - would make the mesh easier to clean It’s 2017, have a USB type C connector! Maybe if Fractal Josh stopped going on yacht trips to the flippin’ Catalina Wine Mixer they could have afforded this. Build Tips If you don’t need the hard drive cage, remove it before doing anything else. Can’t remove with PSU in. If you are putting this on carpet, face the PSU fan UP. Figure out routing the front panel cables before doing any other cabling, especially the USB cable. Thermalright Le Grande Macho RT Review I looked this up in an online translator, and apparently the name means “the great chauvinistic pig”, hopefully it’s a pig for CPU heat and it doesn’t offend any of the lady folk. Why This Cooler Finding this cooler was a trip, I originally wanted something cool and quiet of course, and was leaning towards an AIO kit because I postulated in my head that it would be more resilient to a child tipping my case over. A 1KG air cooler would have a hell of a lot more torque / pressure on the motherboard than a liquid cooling block would if it fell over. So I was looking for an all-copper 240mm solution, and first settled on Be Quiet!’s Silent Loop cooler, but I couldn’t find it for under $200 or so dollars, and that’s because it had to be imported by a third party. I contacted their support, and found out they can’t sell it here in North America because of patent issues, which was interesting. I looked at some other AIO solutions, reviews, etc and couldn’t fall in love with another solution. Also some of the pumps noise recordings in the reviews reminded me of a fish tank aerator pump, which also turned me off of liquid cooling. Looking at air coolers again, I was going to go with the shiny khakis & poo colored Noctua DH-15 or a Be Quiet Dark Rock 3, but then I found this guy on a TechPowerUp review, and it came in both cooler, quieter, and cheaper than the other two. So of course, I needed to review it. Pros Love the design, all you see is the anodized black plate and heatpipes. It hides everything else around your CPU socket. Cheaper than similar Noctua offerings. Comes with the Thermalright TY-147a, a PWM fan that apparently doesn’t suck at low speeds. No ticking like the Wraith Spire fan! Comes with small skin-saving gloves, and a very nice long screwdriver, and a low speed adapter. Base plate is nickel-plated copper, with a nice polished finish. Assembly was a breeze. Hides messy fan cables with no effort! Cons May not fit your motherboard / memory / case. Want to change the rear case fan whose header is under this thing? Say hello to removing your graphics card, and using offset pliers. Be careful when clipping the fan on. I was sloppy and dragged the anti-vibration pads off of the fins - had to start over. Improvement Suggestions I wish it was sold more places, I bought mine off of the only approved US reseller on Amazon. Would be great to see a version with a larger baseplate for TR4 applications. Build Tips Do a dry fit with your memory before fitting the fan in place. Mine cleared it, but I ended up unclipping/reclipping it lower to get more air over the VRMs. Test Results and Thoughts And the scientific results are in… Configurations Key: Tsunami Stock / Tsunami 3.6 Ghz - Tsunami Dream Case, Wraith Spire Cooler, 1 Noctua + 1 Be Quiet! 120mm fans. Stock Ryzen 1600 Results Ryzen 1600 3.6 Ghz Overclock Results With every iteration we were able to reduce the noise, temperature, or both. Focusing on the 3.6Ghz tests, noise at the floor level was reduced 9.5dB, max CPU temperatures reduced 21.6C, and max GPU temps reduced 5C. Using my subjective ears, I like the final fan setup the most as well. Using all Noctua fans for the case changes the tone and feel of the fan noise to be mostly unobtrusive. At head level and full load I get readings of 22.3 dB, which is barely above background noise. It amounts to “is there a fan on, somewhere upstairs?”. The fridge in the next room is louder than it, the HVAC blower is louder than it, the dehumidifier in the basement is louder than it. It is essentially silent in this environment. The only downside to something this quiet is that up close you do hear coil whine and other electronics noise, especially when FurMark is thrashing the graphics card. Conclusions The Fractal Design Meshify C is cooler and quieter than a 12 year old Thermaltake Tsunami Dream. The Le Grand Macho RT cooler is cooler and quieter than an AMD Wraith Spire cooler. Noctua fans may be ugly, but this 3 fan setup is cooler and quieter than the stock Fractal Design fans. If I were to do these tests again, I hope to keep a better notebook as I forgot to take a few readings here and there. I would also give the system time to cool between runs, as the idle temps were skewed because of a quick test cycle. I also hope to purchase a better noise level meter if I get into noise testing. As for what I did with the damned RGB, I ended up adding a UV strip, and doing a little infilling of the Fractal Design logo with UV/Neon paint. This gave it a nice ghostly ultra-violet iradescence, and all you can see while the system is running are the creeping fans and shiny heat pipes everywhere. It can't be fully captured with a camera, but here's the best pictures I have. Thanks for reading!
  15. Hi guys, I have a Fractal R5 case and decided to replace the case fans. The fans that came with the case are quite quite, but still decided to move to three Noctua nf-p14s because i wanted them to move more air inside the case. Now that I have them, they seem to move more air but there is more noise, which mainly comes from the air moved around. At this point I am thinking to return them and get something slightly more quite, maybe loosing a bit of the quantity of air the fan moves but gaining lower noise for my pc. Just to know I have a 6700 processor, a dark rock 3 cooler, and a gtx 1070. Any recommendations for a 120mm fans or 140? Thanks
  16. Has anyone ever tried to put sound-dampening foam in the bottom of the Define R5? What I mean is the space on the bottom of the case from the end of the power supply to the front of the case. Would this even yield any noticeable sound-dampening benefit?
  17. I would like a case in which there is a good amount of airflow, easy to work in( as it is my first time), and has the best bang for the buck price. I had in mind the fractial design s, phanteks ethnoo pro, phatneks evolv itx, corsair 100r, cooler master case 5, and the nzxt h450. I am to open any options and thank you! have also decided to go with a noctua dh-15, so i would need a case big enough for that
  18. Hi, does anyone know where I can get my hands on a fractal design define s side panel. The one I've got now was dented and I cant get the dent out. I've been looking for one and I like the look of the ones where the whole panel is glass but the original will do If anyone finds any please send links or if anyone has one to sell me DM me on twitter (@_Juanos)
  19. So I've ordered these 140mm dust filters + screws from aliexpress for my Fractal design core 2500 But I didn't thought about how I'm going to secure the screws. What do you think would be a good solution?
  20. So currently, I have a Fractal Design Define R2 case. Because of the way it is designed with caged front fans and a single floor fan space, I am a bit unsure of how I would set up an AIO cooler. On one hand, the easy solution is a single 120 on the bottom. On the other hand, a double rad would give better cooling performance, but no spot seems to be a good candidate for mounting such radiator. I don't suppose the space between the front panel and drive cage (after removing the front fan holders) is of sufficient depth to accomodate a rad with fans, unless I am mistaken. One other solution, though a bit ghetto, would be to mount the rad on the drive cage with zipties, twist ties or other means. Do you people have any suggestions for how I could solve this conondrum? I do plan to make a custom side panel for my case, which could potentially be made to have 240-rad support, but I'm not sure if you would recommend it?
  21. Hi! First time builder, I just finished my first 'real pc'. I have a i7 6700k on a matx board, and a 1080 in an Inwin 101 Mid Tower. I am looking to upgrade to an 8700k and an atx board. My case supports atx boards, and I am looking to buy a 360 mm AIO from Fractal, the S36. However, I do not know if the s36 will fit inside of my case, ie not hit my board. Currently, my 120mm fans has about 10mm of clearance from the board which is further up. Will I be able to install the s36?
  22. Hello everyone, I have an question. I will get an Fractal Design Define Mini C for my first build, but I'm concerned about the airflow. Here are my fan configuration ideas: ---------- 1: 4x NZXT Aer P Two of them will be used for front intake. Two of them will be used for top exhaust. ////////// 2: 2x Noctua NF-A14 industrialPPC-3000 PWM Option 1: One of them will be used for front intake. One of them will be used for top exhaust. Option 2: Both will be used for front intake. Stock front fan will be used for top exhaust. ---------- Which config has the best airflow? Thanks in advance.
  23. Greetings everyone. As the title suggests, I am planning to do a quiet/silent gaming PC. After extensive research, I have arrived at the following list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/s6FbRJ Here are my justifications for the list: I chose an aircooler and not a CLC because I read on multiple forums that a big air cooler is usually quieter. And I chose the NH-D15 in particular because of the quiet fans that it comes with and the ease of installation. I chose the Strix Z370-E motherboard for the fan controls implemented in the BIOS. I'm not that good with choosing a motherboard, any other suggestion is welcome. The MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X was praised in many reviews by how quiet it was, and I think that this is due to the beefy heatsink and the two large diameter fans. This is one of the components that I researched the most, because the graphics card is usually the loudest component in a high-end configuration. The Define R6 is known as one of the best noise-insulating cases on the market. I chose the one without a TG side panel for obvious reasons (both sides have noise-dampening foam). Also, the fans that come with the case (Dynamic X2 GP-14) are very quiet, according to this article. Some might think that the PSU is way overkill for this configuration. But I purposely chose a high wattage PSU because that way the fan will not rotate at all (or rotate at a very low speed). The only thing that I'm worried about is the HDD. I don't have much experience with Seagate drives, I only owned a 2TB Barracuda for about a year and a half, and I couldn't even hear that drive, there were other components in my previous system that made more noise. This was my previous configuration: ASRock Z77 Extreme4, Core i5 3470, Thermalright True Spirit 140 BW (rev. A), Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X, 2 x Be Quiet Pure Wings 2 140mm fans (in front), 1 x 140mm stock fan (came with the case), 1 x Noctua NF-S12A top, a Super Flower Golden Green 750W PSU (these are usually found in Europe, Super Flower is the OEM for EVGA; I live in the U.S. now) all inside a Phanteks Enthoo Pro Windowed version (replaced the front 200mm fan with the two Be Quiet fans). I would like to remain in the around $2,000 mark. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
  24. I want to add 2 140mm fans to the top of my case, but I don't know if they both will fit together. What worries me is will there be enough space between the fans. What do you think? My case: http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/core-series/core-2300 Fans I want to add: https://www.bequiet.com/en/casefans/616
