  1. This will be a place for events within the Folding (and sometimes Boinc) community to be posted. It is also a good place to introduce yourself to the rest of the team and ask questions if you have them. If you have an event you would like to organize post it here and PM me about it. Current or upcoming events: In case you are actually living under a rock there is currently a global pandemic of COVID-19 which team LTT and folding@home is working to solve!!! (If you have an event you are trying to organize or would like to participate in please post in this thread and PM me) Nothing right now to announce. But a lot of changes have happened as we have a new Folding team leader: Congratulations to @GOTSpectrum Also check the badge thread as there is now also a diamond level badge for anyone with more than 1,000,000,000 points. If you need to check on final places or prize winners for Folding Month 2019 please check the blog post below as it will have all the information for you. Folding@home team LTT id#: 223518 Boinc teams are all called LinusTechTips_Team Results from past events: Folding month 2019!!! Sprint for 10th! BOINC Pentathlon 2019 LTT Official Folding Month 2018! First LTT folding week results (3/26-4/1/2018): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NerB4jOfgEG_l9mcxxMNTe6hboswk6V-hLiSLMDp7gc/edit?usp=sharing My folding story and also my reasoning for the first event: It was a long time ago when discovered this thing called distributed computing and a piece of software that will use your computer power to help fight against many diseases including cancer . When I started folding I also joined the Linus Tech Tips team (it was actually @Slick's old Ultimate Distributed Computing build that got me into it.) and considering that the mining craze had died down a bit and its still cold for those of us in the northern hemisphere. I was wondering if we could get the whole community together to donate as much of their compute power as they can to Folding At Home (yes it is true that every little bit helps) for some amount of time (title says a week but can easily be extended if we can do it). Obviously the encouragement is to fold to the Linus Tech Tips Team #223581 but since folding is a good cause no matter what there would be no complaints about folding for another team. But one of the pieces of this that really encouraged me was looking at the team ranking for LTT and realizing that we have dropped to 14th considering that when we started we were at least 11th. Long story short fold (preferably for LTT), get your friends folding get their friends folding and even if you bring in complete noobs we have a whole community here to help them. I will link the guides here as well as the video that got me into it. For those that still need some encouragement here's the video that started it all for me: Install guide (yes its just that easy): (going to try to gather info for doing a Debian (kali) install guide soon, If you have guides or would like to do them for other distros please feel free to let me know and I will link them here) Tips and tricks (hasn't been updated since July but as far as I'm aware nothing has really changed): Facts and Fiction: If you are too lazy for all of that here is a link to the site to download it http://folding.stanford.edu/ If any of you have any questions or need help getting your system set up (there are some things that can be tricky at first and I know sometimes reading the guides can be tedious) please feel free to post here where people with more experience than I can help you or pm me if need be. TLDR: A team that folds together... stays together?... you know what I'm sticking with that one. @Whiskers Huge thank you to everyone involved from all of you and the moderators getting this pinned to people just helping each other out on setups and spreading the word to anyone here who is just folding. I never though that this was going to pick up any traction at all and now its an actual bonafide event. So thank you all and let the folding begin!
  2. Yesterday, my sister took on a large math problem involving the LTT folding team stats. The attached graph is what was created to determine when our team, LinusTechTips_Team, will overtake the other folding teams above it. At this pace we will catch CureCoin on Nov 19th, 2020. All credit for the math work goes to my sister on this one! The colored graph below shows each time and the intersecting points mark the days until the team is passed. "The lines represent the total points each of the top four teams will have, as time passes, given their present rates of change." As of yesterday, "in 38 days, LTT will pass EVGA and in 88 days, pass Default. It will take until November for LTT to pass CureCoin and be first, so keep folding!" - Quotes from my sister. LinusTechTips_Team is going strong. I myself am folding for the team and donating my computer power when I am not editing video. Let's get LTT up the charts!
  3. Currently using folding at home for both gpu and cpu but I have noticed my gpu is appearing in the advanced controller as a R9 200 series.... Even though my gpu is a R9 380. Does anyone else have this and know a fix for it? As I believe it is actually making the work units take longer than they should.
  4. There's been a few posts lately where people have been having issues accessing a Folding Rig from another Computer using the Advanced Control client. Couple of important points. Even on your local machine Folding is divided between two parts. The Server which manages folding the Work Units (WUs) downloaded from Stanford and the Client that allows you to Configure, Monitor and Control the Server. Just to be confusing the server is called FAHClient and the Client can be either the Advanced Control Python Application or the Web Server built in to FAHClient. These two control processes on FAHClient have their access restricted by default to just the computer they are running on (the "localhost"). The WebControl runs on TCP Port 7396 and can be accessed by any browser on the computer the Server is running on by the URL: http://127.0.0.1:7396 where 127.0.0.1 is the IP Address referring to the localhost or the IP address of the computer can be used: http://<ip address>:7396 The Advanced Control uses TCP port 36330 ( and can be also accessed using using any TELNET client that supports UNIX terminal emulation such as PuTTY, which the Windows Telnet Client, unfortunately does not ) In order to permit access to either the Web Control or using the Advanced client on another PC you have to allow access on the remote system. Assuming you are on a Local Area Network (LAN) and protected by a router with a firewall blocking external connections the easiest way of doing this is to use the Advanced Control application on the system you want to manage remotely to add the IP Network Address and Mask that will allow all the hosts on your LAN Access without a password. Using a command prompt and running the command: ipconfig you can display your IPv4 address and then click on the "Configuration" button in Advanced Control enter at the bottom of the "Remote Access" tab your network address and mask in BOTH the "IP Address Restriction" and "Passwordless IP Address Restriction" Dialogs. You LAN's IP Network will typically be 192.168.1.0/24 as this is the default for most home routers. Note that you MUST leave in the localhost address 127.0.01 and use spaces to separate the values. Once you have entered the new values and saved them you have to close the Advanced Control Application and Stop and Restart the FAHClient server. If you are in the middle of folding a WU first pause the Work Unit before closing the Advanced Control. To stop the server right-click on the "Folding" applet in the Taskbar and select quit. To restart the server click on the "Folding@home" desktop shortcut which will also launch the Web Control. Un Pause the Work Unit to Resume Folding and then try to access the Sever from another computer using either a web browser or the Advanced Control if it installed. Part 2 - HFM.net
  5. Hello everyone, first of all, English is not my mother tongue so i hope you understand what i say. I wanted to know if changing the Folding speed from "Medium" to "Full" increase GPU usage and Folding speed. I know for a fact that doing that increases the CPU usage but idk if it does the same for the GPU. So what do you guys think? Does changing the Folding speed to "Full" increase GPU usage and Folding speed? Thank you Specs: • Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 • CPU - Intel Core I5-750 2.80ghz (OC'ed to 3.1GHz) • Graphics Card - Gigabyte GTX 1050 TI Windforce 4GB (Not OC'ed) • RAM - Corsair 12GB DDR3 1333mhz • SSD - Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB
  6. Why Linux: It will run well on older hardware that can be re purposed for a dedicated folding machine. You can disable automatic updates. It will perform 5-10% better than Windows due to Driver and OpenMM Core 21 issues in Windows. I have found it to be more stable than Windows with months of up-time. YMMV Why Ubuntu: It is well supported by a large Community and the Long Term Support (LTS) version is supported by Canonical until 2023. Prerequisites: Pretty much any 2GHz or faster processor with a minimum of 2-3GB DDR3 and a PCIe 2 x16 slot should work. If your not running DHCP on your router you’ll need an available IP Address, and to note your Subnet Mask and Gateway Address. NVidia GTX or RTX GPU (AMD GPUs are NOT covered here yet, but if anyone wants to contribute please do so) OS Install (Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.3): This is the LTS Desktop version. More adventurous types may want to consider installing the LTS Server version for a less cluttered install. There are several other guides on how to setup a Linux Folding Rig (see the Reference Section at the end) Note: Ubuntu 19 has removed support for Python2 so FAHControl will not work Download Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Desktop ISO File Burn the ISO to a USB key using Rufus or similar tool Boot from the USB key and start the install For US English just accept the defaults Partition the whole disk as a single “Root” partition, don’t bother creating a separate swap partition. use the default Gnome Desktop (GDM3) for now, it can be changed later. OS Configuration: Graphics Drivers: OpenCL: Folding Client: Configure Folding Client: Configure GPU and, optionally, CPU Slots Configure Advanced Options (Beta Flag, Pause on Start, ...) Configuring X-Windows and GPU: System Administration 101: The Terminal is your Best Friend Starting, Stopping and Restarting Services Package Updates (Aptitude, dpkg, apt ...) Monitoring System Health (htop, ps, sensors, ...) Monitoring GPU Performance (nvidia-settings, nvidia-smi) Monitoring Folding Performance (FAHclient) Advanced Topics: Multiple GPUs In most standard mid and full-tower ATX cases with dual-fan cards the lower card will cook the upper card. I usually install the higher performing card in the lower slot so it is not breathing the hot air from the adjacent card. I have noticed that running the fans on the lower card about 10% above the stock value will result in the upper card getting cooler air and running at a lower temperature and boosting higher. 7. Hey so i took what is normally my cpu rendering server added all the gpus i had laying around in the 2 empty pcie slots and started folding for the ltt team, problem is my 3800x and gtx 1080ti hybrid are cooking and crushing them proteins but my R9-390 is sitting at idle ive tried a couple things and looked for guides but got no results anyone else find a solu tion.
  8. I've been running Rosetta@Home jobs via BOINC off and on for the past week, but once I added GPUgrid to the mix (Rosetta doesn't use GPU it appears), I've noticed a large uptick in jobs that end in Computation Errors. GPUGrid jobs never error. I've read that computation errors can also come from improperly compiled jobs as well. Any theories or explanations? I'm clueless on this, but seeing so many jobs error out after over 6 hours of work have been put into them is quite annoying. The computer isn't actively running any other applications other than the software locking the GPU power and custom fan curves. Otherwise the system is sitting locked. Is it possible that the BOINC software is actually dumber than I expected in terms of handling system resources or is this something else? Current stats for Rosetta: 90 valid jobs, 41 error jobs.
  9. Random post, if I die because of this random crap (not sick yet), someone please keep using my hardware for folding or BOINC. That'll be my after death good deed.
  10. Hey! the last days i have been seeing that "folding" What is the use of it exactly? Do you get something in exchange?
  11. Hello 515x4Da here, I was experimenting and letting my PC cool off a little by putting folding on light and began to have odd issues. For one Google Chrome and Mine-craft (4-GB allocated) that are running in the background began having spurts of odd textures and Black screens in Chrome, plus Oh Snap pages. Did a little google and found it as a display issue. Updated my Nvidia drivers and it has seemed to fix the malfunction when you switch folding speeds. Fold on and make sure to check for driver updates. Attached is a quick snapshot I was able to get of this odd bug on minecraft
  12. Been running Folding@home for a bit now and have had it running basically as would be expected yet today 26/03/20 I haven't had either cpu or gpu running once... I have tried restarting and messing around with settings in the "advanced control" yet still nothing... Are they really struggling to push projects to systems?
  13. I'm curious...recently I've just been doing GPU folding with F@H, Medium Power. GPU is a 1080Ti. The estimated credit on these GPU folding projects might start at like 120k, but over time it goes down to like 77k...why is the estimated credit decreasing? What factors affect the credit/points just in terms of basic folding mechanics?
  14. I am attempting to install the folding at home client and control programs in Ubuntu and whenever I run the installation command sudo dpkg -i /home/alex/Downloads/fahclient.deb and I get the error Errors were encountered while processing: fahclient I am not sure what this means but it won't install through the Ubuntu software app either. The control app works fine but I obviously need the client for it to work. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  15. Hey guys, I'm folding on my main rig (Ubuntu 19.10, R9 3950x + GTX 1080ti + RX550), but for some reason neither of my GPUs seem to be "available". I would only want to fold on the nvidia one, as I prefer using the amd gpu for display out (and it wouldn't contribute that much anyway). I tried a ton of things, including completely taking out the 550, and FAHControl just does not detect anything when trying to add slots. I don't know what to try, and I don't even know what logs/config files to dump. Cheers
  16. I've been using F@H for a bit over a week actively (I think) at this most recent go at it, and at the same time I started to dabble with BOINC. Right now I have CPU in F@H paused, only running GPU jobs. BOINC is using the CPU. I noticed that at no point with F@H does my GPU utilization go over about 40%. I'd like BOINC to use the GPU as well, but only another ~40% or so leaving some cycles for me to play light games. However, I see noting in BOINC manager to throttle GPU aside from the option to only use GPU while the computer (keyboard and mouse) are idle. Is there a good way to do what I would like to do, or do I just need to enable GPU, let the computer figure it out, but not have any extra GPU cycles left to play with?
  17. This was a passing thought, but I was curious what would be the barriers (for MS, Sony, the F@H developers, etc.) to get a F@H distribution on more recent consoles. The PS3 might be a problem due to its Cell CPU, but I would think the main barrier would be heat more than anything. You could probably persuade MS and Sony to waive the digital store posting of F@H in their stores as an act of humanity/charity. Folding could be encouraged with achievements/trophies, etc. Perhaps another barrier would be the console manufacturers not wanting to consider the increased heat and potential wear on the system? Understandably every console tends to be underpowered when compared to a medium to high-end PC, but it's the potential for extra nodes.
  18. Was thinking of taking up F@H. I did some coin-mining for a couple months some time ago and my GPU doesn't seem to have suffered for it. I'm curious if on average the load placed on the CPU and/or GPU is about the same as other distributed computing projects and mining. I'd prefer to not massively accelerate the wear on my components as I don't have much for part replacements at the moment, but I'd like to contribute. Please point me to an appropriate thread if this question has already been answered.
  19. So I am trying to fold using my Unraid server. I have the docker installed and the GPU (Quadro K4000) set up per the instructions on the docker web page. I have tried this on Unraid versions 6.7.0 and 6.7.2 (with Nvidia drivers via Unraid Nvidia plugin) and I know the install is good because Plex uses the GPU without issue. The problem is the GPU worker keeps failing. The log is saying the worker doesn't see the CUDA version, which believe to be the stem of this issue. Has anyone tried this and had success? I'm at a loss here. Thanks in advance.
  20. Hey guys, I am running GPU folding on my 1060 with client v 7.5.1_x86. Everything is going good, except when I attempt to open the protein viewer. It doesn't load, and I see these messages in the event log : 08:07:38:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:07:54:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:10:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:26:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:42:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:58:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. There was an older thread on LTT(https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1061385-problem-with-foldinghome-protein-viewer/?tab=comments#comment-12542647) with the same problem and error code, but I couldn't find any relevant solutions there, so I decided to post a new one. Also, the overall statistics(https://stats.foldingathome.org/os) haven't been updated since the time I started folding, around 3-4 months ago. Does anyone know why this is so?
  21. Hi guys; I’m new to the forum and I want to say hi to all you guys out there. What do you guys make of this Smartphone; I found it on an advert on Facebook. Im not too sure if it’s a scam or not but hasn’t anybody had any dealings with this website and if anyone has seen or tested this is smartphone. any feedback would be awesome! R
  22. IMPORTANT EDIT: Link to my website is incorrect as I am migrating to a new datacentre! Hi all! It's been a while, but boy have I been busy! Over the last few months, I have acquired my own server! A HP ProLiant DL380 G6 to be precise. While I will post about that separately, here I would like to show you just one of the things I am doing with it. Scientific research! I am using Folding@Home and BOINC to allow my server to do computing for the greater good of mankind. To join my World Community Grid team, click here to visit my website to take you to the appropriate links. (Please be aware that my website is unfinished) Thanks for reading!
  23. So my folding stopped randomly, So my folding stopped randomly, not the fist time this has happened. usually i can get it to go again by stopping it and starting it again. but this time it will not go again. i tried restarting my computer. and i also tried reinstalling the program. anyone able to help?
  24. I have a GTX 1080 in my machine that normally gets 700K ~ 800K on its own. I recently added 2 Quadro 2000s and they can do around 100K a piece . The problem is that when I run all 3 the GTX 1080 drops to around 100K PPD. I am running a Ryzen 2600X so I am not short on CPU cores and each GPU gets one. When I tried to setup all of the GPU slots it complained that I needed to manually set the OpenCL index. I have them set at 0, 1 and 2. If I remove the two Quadro 2000 slots the 1080 goes back to its normal performance. Does anyone know why this happens? Am I configuring FAH Client wrong? I really want to have all 3 running full tilt.
  25. Folding supports research into the cause of and potential Cures for Cancer, Neurological and Infectious Diseases. It is a way we can contribute back and honor the memory of those we've lost to these diseases. So who do you fold for?
