I was trying to plug in my unused floppy drive today, when i suddenly noticed a constant click every 0.2 seconds or so. The drive it a Teac FD-CR7-002 that is also a card reader that works just fine. I have also attached a video of the noise that was captured very closely to the drive, but even if i don't do anything in Windows (11), I can clearly hear it. Specs: Ga-Ma78GM-S2H 1.1 mobo AMD Athlon 64 x2 5400+ CPU (Dual core 2.8GHz) 6GB of DDR2 677MHz Ram A GTX 745 4GB GPU 350 Watt PSU (ATX) 2x DVD-RW Drives USB 1.1 PCI Card 2 Fans Thank you, Stephen VID_20230607_193340_compressed.mp4

Anyone else use diskettes in this day and age? I do. I still use XP myself. I'm beginning to think windows 10 doesn't like my new USB floppy drive.

This feels like a question better asked 40 years ago but I have run into a wall and feel like at least ONE person on this forum has experience with it. The drive is the Shugart 801 with an LSI PCB, supposedly meaning it does not need -5VDC compared to earlier models. The main problem is that the stepper motor works FORWARD but not backward, meaning the head can go all the way out but must manually be pushed back in. This means a disk cannot be read/written to effectively. The stepper motor seizes up when trying to go backwards. Everything else seems right to me based on the fact it is mostly working properly in DOS, minus the said problem. I have it going from a 34 pin floppy cable in a PIII system going to 50 pin shugart and Windows 2000 can even send signals to it. I found the service manual here (39025-1_SA800_801_Service_Manual_Mar82.pdf) which has been pretty helpful so far but does not state anything about the stepper not stepping backwards. If I had to guess, it is either a bad servo, a bad track 0 detector (making it impossible to go backwards) or possibly a failed component on the PCB, though every component looks to be in perfect shape. Hope someone can help, I have a lot of data I need to recover!

Hey, so got an odd one, I just added a 1.44m drive to my Windows 2000 rig. But it doesn't show up at all in Windows The drive works just fine from a bootable disk, but nothing at all in Windows. Device manager shows a yellow "?" near the drive, but the properties menu won't open. Disk management also doesn't load in the Computer Management tool, it gets stuck on "Connecting ti Logical Disk Management Services". Also the Logical Drives screen just shows an error that says "Win32: The service can't be started because disabled or no yada yada Also now I just got an mmc.exe has reported errors and will close error. I should mention tht I have disabled a few services and whatnot so I may have broke something, but I can't figure what. So uh, now what?

Is it possible to find such a thing....maybe custom built? If not where would I find an external for each individually. 3 1⁄2-inch externals are all around but not 8 inch nor 5 1/4

hello i am trying to backup my ms-dos floppy's for my philips nms 9100 computer (form 1984) the nms 9100 can see the config.sys and autoexec.bat but my windows 7 pc can't does anyone know where i can find them on the floppy's

I think this is the right place to put this. So, I'm looking to build my first PC; and I figure that if I'm going to do it, I'll go all in and attempt to make my dream system. One of the things I want the computer to have is a floppy drive. I know that USB floppy drives are a thing, and probably easier, but where's the fun in that? I want the motherboard to have a header to connect a 3.5" drive. Such a requirement might have me start my search with older motherboards where the connector was more common, if not for my other requirement. I also want the computer to be VR capable. This means the motherboard needs to be as new as possible. I'm on the hunt for something that fulfills both requirements, but I could really use a hand. tl:dr I need help finding the most modern motherboard possible that has a floppy header. Any Suggestions?

Hi, I've been thinking about a build such as this for a while... So I wanted a new case but with a certain criteria and all are mandatory. Nm.1 I wanted to hold 2 cd rom drives and a floppy disk but the first cd drive is a massive 7X NEC CD-ROM Changer and yes I said CD-ROM CHANGER that wasn't a typo so its fucking massive and it takes up 2 slots so technically I would need 4 slots Nm.2 It has to be in a beige retro styled case. ( something like this... ) And thats it

What's needed: .Winuae http://www.winuae.net .Tsgui http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/tsgui .Workbench 3.1 (You'll have to find your own copy because I'm not a pirate) .Virtual Floppy http://aminet.net/search?query=virtual+floppy First off, when clicking on the download for a .dms file, it'll show up as a bunch of text in your browser. Just right click the file and chose to save the link to disk. Save it as a .dms. step 1: Set up your Amiga emulator (winuae). Here's a guide for that http://guide.abime.net/home3.htm The workbench 3.1 disks are your operating system installation disks so you'll need those now. If you have trouble loading them from an external floppy drive, convert them to .ADF image files. This could be a problem since I don't know a way of converting them in windows instead of from the Amiga emulator. Comment if you know of a program capable of doing this. There's likely a way. I'm just forgetting. step 2: Put tsgui.lha and virtualfloppy.lha into a directory, call it downloads and add that directory as a drive in winuae labeling the volume as downloads again. You need to use Amiga Dos to extract them. So, go to your system drive, go to system, then open Shell. Type: lha x downloads:tsgui.lha downloads: hit enter Type: lha x downloads:virtualfloppy.lha downloads: hit enter Type: endcli hit enter NOTE: if you have any trouble with the steps below, you probably didn't install the Amiga installer or something else important in the guide to setup winuae so go back through that again if you have a problem. step 3: Now open that downloads directory in your Amiga emulator and open up virtual floppy. Wait for it to load, go to the first Amiga tab and click on VH1, hit the first button on the left. Click on VH1 again and click the 2nd button from the left. It should now be a formatted virtual floppy on your Amiga desktop. step 4: Open tsgui, highlight VH1 in the left column, then near the bottom you can find a file, click that and locate the .DMS file you want to convert (make sure you put it in a directory accessible to your emulator like that downloads directory we created). Now click the button to write the file to the floppy. It will will first say that the size of the disk doesn't match the size of the file.. Ignore that and now it will look like it failed giving you error 0 probably asking you to reinsert the floppy since it's now not going to work with Amiga. Just hit cancel. step 5: Still in tsgui, highlight VH1 again in the left column, but this time hit the button to write the floppy to file. Step 6: Hit F12, navigate to the floppy section and add that floppy image to DF0, DF1, DF2, or DF3 like you would with any other floppy. It should come up as a working floppy now. So there, now you know how to do that. Not that you'll probably ever need to or that anyone even asked but putting it somewhere online so the tutorial is there in case someone needs it seeing as this isn't exactly intuitive.

Does anyone know what floppy drive emulators are good for? I was looking for an internal 5.25 inch floppy drive device for 3.25 inch floppies that connects to sata when I stumbled upon these little puppies. Don't know what they do and can't find much info on them that satisfies my itch. Also, if you could help me find an internal 3.25 inch floppy drive for a 5.25 inch bay that connects with sata or some other modern connector that would be great. Yes I know external drives exist. It doesn't fit my needs.

It seems nobody has done a comparison of SSDs vs. floppy disks yet. I think Linus should do something ridiculous for a comparison- say, run twenty (or more) floppies in a RAID to try to match SSD speeds. (SATA SSD speeds, of course, unless M.2 speeds are actually possible with this.) Sorry if this is the wrong place for suggestions, I couldn't find a better place to put it.

I'm looking for something a bit unique today everyone. I have four unused 5.25 drive bays. I've settled on a very nice Blue-Ray Burner for the first, a feature full fan controller for the second, a compartment for sensitive electronic information storage items for the third, and an internal card reader for the fourth....with a floppy disk drive. I have used up my one USB 3.0 header on my Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 already and so I would prefer one without USB 3.0. Heck, I don't even know if I have 2.0 slots left on that board. All I really want is something that can read and write SD card (and variants) and floppy that functions in a 5.25-inch drive bay that can communicate with this motherboard. Extra card formats that the item can read and the lack of redundant features like USB ports and fan controls are nice bonuses. I already suspect that the answer is going to end up being "it doesn't exist" but I've decided to make this post in case someone surprises me. I'm not new to the computer world (or this neck of the woods) but I want to know if I just happened to miss some, "diamond in the rough". Thanks for any help you can provide.

After a weekend in my junk.. oh, sorry, old parts I found old floppy disk drive and a pile of old floppys. I was curious what I wrote 15 years ago so I went to a local computer store and bought an IDE->SATA piece of silicon. And the problem is: This controller includes power pins but my drive has them on a separate cable. I thing you guys are smart enough to tell me what to cut. Hardware: -SFD-321B FDD -SPIF223A-HL022 - based chinese thingy I don't think you need photos because they are easy to find.

Hey Linus Tech Tips, Are there external floppy drive enclosures that you can buy? I have a bunch of old 1.44 MB disks I'd like to go through and see if I can find any neat utilities and/or games to tinker with in DOSbox. It would be funny to type up a paper or note in a DOS word processor in the year 2016.

Hi guys, I was thinking of using the female 4pin molex connector on my molex to floppy power adapter that came with my PSU on a fan without molex and I was wondering would a floppy power connector be of any use in a build?

How do I connect that molex (gold one) from psu to the led strip connector from case? It doesnt go together but in manuel it says its molex but its wrong end. My psu comes with a floppy conector shown below and it fits in the big end but where do I plug in that 4 pin part? Thanks guys.
