  1. Budget (including currency): $700~ Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Final Fantasy 11 Online Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I build PCs for fun and for friends. My buddy has asked me if I could build him a PC for Final Fantasy 11 Online. He is a truck driver and has a laptop setup in his truck but would like to upgrade to a small form factor desktop. Here's the catch: he plays 6 different characters so would like to be able to have 6 instances of the game running. He also uses a program called Windower 4 for resolution upscaling and add-on management. I don't know much about FF11 but based on the minimum specs I could find online, it doesn't appear to be very demanding. Based off of that, I put together a parts list here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/d7ftt7 Any feedback, comments, or helpful advice would be much appreciated!
  2. http://www.siliconera.com/2017/09/04/final-fantasy-xv-pc-gameplay-shows-noctis-friends-action-4k/ Nvidia has also uploaded their another video showcasing some of the additional tech that has been added. I'm pretty hyped for this release! I've been hoping that Square Enix would start to show some love to the PC fandom and, with ports of some Android packages, they've delivered on the majority of the Final Fantasy series. What are your thoughts on this release? Do you think that Square is making the right move here? Would you like them to release all future installations towards Playstation and PC or possibly to all consoles?
  3. FFXV Tonberry Knights. So...real talk. Are these Jedi monsters really beatable without extreme frustration? I've tried the daggers block/parry method and still get my rear consistently kicked if there's more than one. I'm doing the hunt where there's only two. I hear there's dungeons with more.
  4. So I'm not sure if I should get it or not. I'm joining the military on 14.12.2016 and won't have a lot of time to play stuff from then onwards, should I pick it up?
  5. Last weekend was the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Paris. This is my first time attending a game specific event like this. Due to the weather the group I was with had to do some hectic travel rearrangement to get there at all, and we arrived just as the opening keynote and ceremony was over. At least it means no delay to get in and we breezed through security bag check and registration. This is the entrance from the 2nd day. The queue was broken, as I was in a party as DPS, with healer and tank, and it didn't instant-pop. This is the main stage. Seating was tight and it got warm. Think I heard there were 4500 people at this event. Just a few then! This was the area for the special Yojimbo challenge. A preview as it were for future game content. Queues were quite long, can't remember but wouldn't be surprised if it was over an hour. You got around 5 mins to set up the controls, and go in. Most people probably have highly customised their home setups, and there was no way to transfer that. My main is Bard, but I managed to get enough of my skills set up quickly. Had to queue a 2nd time before I got a clear, which got a reward of a sticker. I believe in the past they gave out "I beat..." t-shirts, but not this time. Positions had both controller and keyboard+mouse. Area was sponsored, so PCs were from Alienware, and headsets from Turtle Beach. I didn't pay close attention to any of it as I had to concentrate on the fight, but there was a mechanical keyboard I had no problem with, but tank in my party hated it. Mouse was on a rather small mouse mat which was somewhat challenging. Something I don't know, is if the game defaults to linear mouse, as the systems I used that day all behaved as such. That was my biggest concern, as I hate mouse acceleration and it is one of the 1st things I change when setting up a new install. Similarly this was at the challenge roulette. Spin the wheel to see what you have to do. Only did this once, and we ended up with a relatively easy one. Zurvan X Wind up Cursor. While waiting we were speculating what this was. One mechanic seen in Rabnastre raid was the wind up cursor appearing spinning over your head, and you can only move in the direction it was pointing at the time. Well... it wasn't quite that bad. Keyboard players were asked to map WASD opposite to normal. I don't know what controller players did, although I heard from another team later on they had to hold the controller rotated 180 degrees. As keyboard+mouse, reversed WASD wasn't that bad actually. We could still turn normally using mouse, so in effect I only had to worry about swapping forward/backwards. There was another trick that I didn't use, which is pressing L+R mouse button makes you walk forward, and that was unchanged also. I thought that would be against the spirit of the challenge so didn't do it other than seeing if it worked. Oh, these were not sponsored systems. They were PS4, with a generic membrane keyboard. I found that harder to use as I rely on more travel to palm-press left-ctrl as modifier. Another view of the interior, these are two of the mini-games you could queue up for. At the back is the merchandise area. There was a display, and you can fill out an order form and take it over to pay. They gave you a token which you then take to the collection area to pick up goods. It was busy early on, so they gave out tickets giving you a time slot to queue in, but it eased up in the afternoon and it didn't seem to be enforced after that. Looking the other direction, there is the main stage at the far left. The aetheryte was a good landmark for meeting up with people. First time I met my game wife (he was nice), and later a youtuber I follow. In front of that were more mini-games, and the signing wall where you can leave your mark. Just like in game, you get a chance to hit the cactpot. As part of the stuff you're given is a single ticket, with a chance to earn a 2nd one if you want. No surprise, I didn't get anything here. Concerts were held on both evenings. I didn't know what to expect in either case and was pleasantly surprised in both. The first night was a piano concert by Benyamin Nuss, and vocals in part by Susan Calloway. Soken also took part, with some interesting twists. The 2nd night was The Primals concert pictured above. Yoshi-P did a part, but didn't want to add singer to his job title. I don't do musical events generally. There was an announcement before both saying that no sound or video recording was allowed, but it was obvious there were many ignoring that, and didn't seem to be any enforcement. I only took some random snaps but knew it wasn't worth trying too hard as the phone quality would suck anyway. After the concert was the closing ceremony, where they also got on stage other Square Enix staff. After some words, it was over until Tokyo. Look forward to it. Just for turning up, you get the above loot. A bag, pen, lanyard, water bottle, wrist band, badges and stickers. Not bad. There's also a book (not shown) which had various info, and a section at the back for collecting stamps by participating in events. I got the three physical items, the goobbue patch, korpokkur keyring, and auto-translate magnets. The latter should be interesting to mix with a lolcats set I have already... there was also chance for an extra cactpot ticket but I didn't do enough for that. The staff also randomly appeared on the show floor, so there was some unscheduled signing chances. I got the two foxes, Foxclon, and Koji Fox. I would loved to have got a Yoshi-P and Soken too, but I wasn't in the right place at the right time. On that note, it was certainly an experience. One that almost never happened due to travel chaos and requiring throwing a lot of money at the problem to be there at all. If anything, it would be nice if the queues could be shorter. With 4500 people there, it was never going to be easy. You want to do events? Queue. Food? Queue. Toilets? Queue. DPS simulator 2019. I also felt bad at one point, where Ayumi Namae was given another slot after the reveals in the Live Letter. She had to follow the FFXV crossover and other major reveals, and the pace change was too much. Lots of people left the stage area to go do other things then as time was limited. Thankfully they don't do these too often, about once every two years in each region. I might have recovered by the next one...
  6. Hey, this is my first time using a forum like this. I was wondering if someone could help me out. I have had problems with my PC performing below expectations before, but now I decided I should talk to some smart people. I recently downloaded FINAL FANTASY XV on my PC and from what I can tell, it is not performing how it should. On recommended settings, I am getting about 20-27 fps. I had put them on the lowest settings and the fps went up to 30-50 fps on there. I see others getting 60 fps with my same graphics card, I have a gtx 1070 with a decent Intel processor. I have the latest drivers in nvidia and I do not have any outdated PC components as far as I know of.
  7. **Update with Square Enix's response to Gamers Nexus's concerns** https://www.gamersnexus.net/news/3226-square-enix-addresses-ffxv-benchmark-concerns Square Enix responded to Gamers Nexus's concerns about the accuracy of the benchmark and the issues they discovered in the utility. They are fully aware of these issues, and have acknowledged its existence. Sqare Enix goes to say that the reason why the locked the settings behind three options is for "simplicity's sake", while the final game will allow users to fine-tune their in-game graphics settings. Whether this is justifiable or not is up for debate. Gamers Nexus believes that the issues they discovered in the original post below is oversight, rather than malice, and attributes this to tight development timelines to get this benchmark out in a timely manner. **Original post** Steve Burke TL;DR from the YouTube video "It's a fucked up benchmark utility. We don't recommend it." https://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/3224-ffxv-disingenuous-misleading-benchmark-tool-gameworks-tests So Gamers Nexus was doing some testing of this benchmark (they stated they've done 13+ hours figuring out how to benchmark hardware in this game), and they found that it is a complete mess, is unrepresentative of what would be the final product, and is misleading. To make matters worse, you can't fine-tune the graphics settings, and you're stuck with three presets. The "High" preset turns on all but two GameWorks settings, and those are ShadowLibs and VXAO. As for how you can do this, there's a guide out there that goes through how to configure the .ini file to allow for custom tuning of the graphics settings. Gamers Nexus has found that the causes to these issues is that objects and characters not in the camera view (or at least within a set radius of the player) are being rendered, whether they're endowed with GameWorks effects or not. This is especially the case with these "buffalo" characters with HairWorks (which so far are the only characters with HairWorks applied) are being rendered far away from the player with HairWorks still running. Mind you, HairWorks is functional; it's being rendered. By disabling all of the GameWorks options, performance uplifts are massive enough to question the legitimacy of the benchmark. In this quote below, a GeForce GTX 1070 is used as a baseline. Their results show that AMD's hardware (a Radeon RX Vega 56 was used in these tests) is at a major disadvantage relative to the performance of its nearest competitor: a GeForce GTX 1070, which is to be expected given that this game contains GameWorks technology. Not surprised there. Turning off every GameWorks options brings the RX Vega 56 to 90.1% of a GeForce GTX 1070. Want to know who wins for hitting these GPUs the hardest? That goes to HairWorks! In the instance below, disabling HairWorks allows the RX Vega 56 to gain a massive amount of performance. Doing the same thing on the GeForce GTX 1070 still gives you a performance boost, though not as earth-shattering. But that's to be expected since the game has GameWorks technology baked in. But its implementation is to be questioned. As for tessellation, well, there's zero impact. AMD's geometry pipeline has improved drastically, despite its history of poor performance with regards to tessellation when compared against NVIDIA's offerings. AMD still has work to do to get a driver out when or before Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition is released. The game is over 100GB, and the benchmark is only 3.7GB large. Disabling both HairWorks and Turf Effects nearly doubles the FPS performance for AMD's hardware. That is insane, but it is clearly expected, as NVIDIA owns GameWorks and they've optimized for it, but this example shows that it is poorly implemented by Square Enix, compared to The Witcher 3 developed by CD Projekt RED, whereby these technologies are being implemented, and its hurting performance on even NVIDIA hardware for no apparent visual gain. As for disabling HairWorks on AMD's hardware, you can expect a performance gain of 37%, again it's expected. NVIDIA doesn't suffer as hard of a performance impact, but it does show, and this is reproducible. Not to mention, frametimes were kind of a mess as well, and BOTH AMD and NVIDIA suffer those frametime issues. Even if you do run the benchmark three times, it is still noticeable, even with the most powerful of hardware like a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, like I have. Want to know what's sad, but funny at the same time? NVIDIA made these (admittedly) very cool GameWorks effects, and it was not implemented so well that NVIDIA's hardware is also struggling, despite its performance impact not being as significant as AMD with them on. IMO the only visually impactful thing after watching the video (minus those buffalo thingies) is Turf Effects. To make matters worse, the results are aggregates, and there's zero control of it whatsoever, and should not be trusted until further notice. All in all, this benchmark was not well-assembled as we all hoped. The only thing we can wait for to get an answer is when the game actually gets released. Square Enix has around 30 days to fully optimize the game, and greatly improve their culling to not render objects and characters out of the camera view and when the player won't be looking at them from a distance, unless they're trying to look for them. Remember guys, this is not the fault of NVIDIA for their GameWorks library (which can be implemented well and have almost no impact for HairWorks, or a slight deficit in performance for the newer stuff like VXAO), or AMD for not releasing a driver ahead of the release of the game. Most of the blame has to be laid on Square Enix, as the blame rests on all three parties, but Square Enix has to take most of the flak for not assembling a proper benchmark that's representative of the final product. I'll admit, it is a visually impressive game! I still plan on getting this game some time after release, or on release depending on what I decide. AGAIN I WILL SAY THIS: Don't solely blame NVIDIA for their GameWorks libraries because they're not responsible for programming the game after all, don't solely blame AMD for not releasing a driver prior to the benchmark's release, and don't solely blame Square Enix either. Square Enix didn't do a good job at building the benchmark, AMD didn't get a driver out to help out the performance when this benchmark was released. NVIDIA didn't program this game, they only created and provided the GameWorks technologies to the developers (Square Enix), and the developers are allowed to optimize and tweak it as they see fit, and not redistribute it in accordance to licensing terms. This benchmark should not be used to gauge purchasing decisions if you plan on buying this game. It's unrealistic, it's not built well, and admittedly, if you want to know what the real performance is like versus your hardware, wait for the game to be released and find out then, as they'll be testing the game when it does get released. Steve (not related to Steve Burke) from Hardware Unboxed even canceled his 30 GPU battle for Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition after he himself saw those strange results. This quote came from the YouTube comments section of the video format of this news, which includes visual examples. To finish it off, Gamers Nexus has been in touch with NVIDIA, and they stated that they're working with Square Enix to polish the game before they're scheduled to release it. Plus, this benchmark isn't the game. But if it is, that's a whole other discussion we will get into on a later date. I also request that moderators please moderate this thread, and lock it if need be. I still hope that the initial post is compliant with the Tech News and Reviews Posting Guidelines, and included all required materials.

  9. Final Fantasy XIV has been with me since 2.0b and I hated it on the PS3 and it's controller. It was only on the PC that I fell in the love with the game and being able to tie skills to every button on my Naga's 12 extra buttons. I do play on PS4 but I struggle with the cross hotbar. There's extra button presses for me changing between skills, and the fact I have to hold R2 or L2 with everything is a pain in my eyes. Still, nothing beats doing roulettes as a White Mage whilst kicking back on the sofa, controller in hand. What about you? What's your FFXIV controller preference, and why?
  10. Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster released not even an hour ago on Steam for $29.99... actually there's a 20% discount from Square Enix getting the price down to $23.99. GMG's even better, not only with the 20% instant price break but a stacking 25% off coupon, making the game only $17.99. A full 40% off the $29.99 MSRP. Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (Steam) — $17.99 at GMG (list $30) Use Code: DEALZON25
  11. So there is a choice for two games I can get, it is either: Wait for Final Fantasy XV or VII remake and get it on PS4. Or, I can wait for the division on pc.
  12. Hey! Recently started playing FFXIV with a friend of mine. This is my first actual investment into an MMO (Where i actually get involved in the community) and am looking for others who would like to play with us! EDIT: Server is Diablos
  13. On Tuesday, March 17th Square Enix began selling the FF14 Realm Reborn expansion "Heavensward" for $39.99 on their site. The PC Download will cost you $39.99 there, but today GMG posted the pre-order on their site, where a 20% off coupon chops the price to $32. The same coupon also works on the Digital Collector's Edition. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward — $32 (list $40) Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward - Collectors Edition — $48 (list $60) Use Code: JBTBG5-7GVTE8-W2YXRV The expansion doesn't release until June 23rd, but in the past, publishers have put the kibosh on pre-order discounts like this shortly after they become available. It could be nixed after today, or another coupon discount could be seen later this weekend. As of right now, though, the 20% off coupon at GMG ends Friday, March 20th at 8am Pacific.

  18. This is from Famitsu [www.novacrystallis.com], and it's the reason why I believe PC ports will be awesome while console games will be good (better than usual). This is a quote from an interview between Tetsuya Nomura (developer of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III) and Famitsu Magazine. The bold part is what I want to point out. Now, these are bullet points from an interview Nomura did with NBC (whoever they are...) which was live streamed during E3. Once again, the bold is my more important point. Whether these games would be good on PC or not (though the PC neeeeeds more JRPG's), the point is that it's apparently easy to bring them to PC. I'm not gonna say that all of the console games will be developed the way Nomura is doing it for FFXV and KH3 (though I think that's the right way), or that every game will use DirectX 11 (which PC's use, obviously). I'm just saying that the way things are going, more games are likely to come to PC and likely at MUCH higher quality. Maybe not all. Maybe not even half, but the future looks bright regardless. :) I just wanted to point out these things (from people developing for the new consoles and how they view doing it), so that others might know it as well. Not to mention this means better games for consoles as well. Which I'm particularly happy for (I will not play KH3 or FFXV on a PC. Simply because I prefer controllers for those types of games). Any thoughts? Happy for better quality and more games? P.S. Mod, if this is in the wrong section (I don't think it is), feel free to move it.
