So I am looking for a new WiFi router, something that would functionally replace an Airport TimeCapsule but with modern speeds. AFAIK, I need a: Wifi 6 (or 6e) capable router Router with a few external USB 3 (3.???) ports, so that a 1-5 TB external USB hard drive can be attached to it to make a file server at 100+ MB/sec speeds. (router with an internal HDD / SSD would be nice but maybe not necessary.) Router that has some wired Gigabit ethernet ports (one WAN side, and 2+ LAN side for desktops) DMZ feature? Basic wifi router that isn’t a wifi extender (wifi mesh network device, or whatever that is). Am I missing any features I may need? I just want to make a file server for photos, and videos, and to upgrade my local Wi-Fi speeds, to keep things secure locally, and preferably to not pay for extra “remote/cloud access” features. So given these features I am looking for, does anyone have any recommendations for what WiFi router (and/or external TB USB drive) I should get? I read on the forums people mentioning TP-Link router devices. Hello! I have an file server running Openmediavault, but thinking to migrate to Unraid. And want some experiences from unraid users, and i have some questions. So my question's is: Is unraid worth the money? Does it work seamless in an Windows environment? How is the performance vs openmediavault? Does unraid have possibility to host print-services? Good Evening together, I'd like to build a Serverenviroment at Home for my own use. And I'm now in front of some difficult questions, I'd like some opinions on. First of all do I need multiple Severs? I'd like to run a Fileserver to accsess my Files localy and some Vms and Dockercontainer for VPN, SQL Databases, Nextcloud, Streaming sevice etc.. Now do i put all my applications on one Server or use multiple ones. And how can I decide which OS to use? There are way too many optinons in my opinion: Fedora Sever, Ubuntu Sever, Windwos Sever, FreeNas, UnRaid or OpenMediaVault. Every OS has their advantages in filesystem or virtualisation. The next question is my local network speed and the type of disks to use: Do I need 10 Gbit network(SFP or RJ45)? Isn't 1 Gbit too slow? I'd like to use > 1 Gbit since 100 Mb/s readspeed is too slow in my opinion, but is that true? I planing to use some ssd and hdds to get good performance and nice read/write speeds. Or is that realy necessary? deliver HDDS in raid enougth performance to feel any difference to SSD? SAS OR SATA? My last Question is if I should by old/used sever gear or build a server with new parts of consumer computer parts? I'd like to hear your opinions on that If there are any unanswered questions please point them out.

Hi, just a "quick" Question what do you think what I should do? ^^ My Dad has got a small company (like LTT but far less IT Infrastructer needed). At the Moment we have an Server thats used as an remote System for two people, some database stuff thats not really intense, and about 200 to 300GB very important Data and 500GB not frequently used data. We have a team of 4 CAD designer and they say that the save times of our projects (which are really small max. 10MB per project) are really slow, up to an minute. Our drives are pretty much full, which is probably the cause of the slow loading times. Also our server is about 5 years old, Xeon e3-1240 v3 4c8T | 32GB Ram | about 1TB of 10K SAS HDDs Raid1 At the moment we have a working backupsystem with tape, there is no need to do something there. But there is a need to do something about our Server infrastructure. We got an offer from our IT consulting company I think thats apart from the hard drives not an useful offer cause ~5700USD just for an HDD upgrade makes no sense to me, because we probaly would have to buy a new Server in 1 to 2 Years again, because the hardware would be to slow for some new Software we will get in the next years. A quick question, why SAS HDDs? whats the big important different to SATA drives apart from their latency thats better because they are spinning faster? (Also we would have to spend another 7000 bucks for new software licences) So thats not really an option at the moment. (At least for me, if I say thats OK my dad will buy it) The secound option would be to buy a Fileserver / build on myself with pretty decent enterprise Hardware running Linux or Windows. (Does someone know about an very good linux distro for NAS applications? (It does not have to be free) The biggest plus of this option would be, that we have an IT store with their warehouse in our neightborhood, so if something breaks I can get that part in less than half an hour. Also I can ask them to always have that parts in stock for me, because I know some guys there ^^. The third opten would be to buy an NAS. At the moment my favourite would be an synology ds3018xs with 3 x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf PRO with 5 years warranty in Raid 5 This NAS is probably a little bit overkill for only 3 HDDs but overkill is good isn't it? I would love to get some input to think about from you guys.

Im not sure if to use three 6tb drives which are faster or use four 4th drives which I think would give me a faster read and wright speed. I mainly intent this server to do a few things for me. One being storing all the films and tv shows I have on random hard drives to create a plex server to watch shows on it. I want this server to be able to do some light transcoding by turning all the films and tv shows into the same format but might outsource this to another computer. Also to be a backup and archive for my work such as video projects and photos have shot. Hi all, I'm a web developer running my own business (just me) and my primary tool is a 2017 macbook pro. Keyboard aside, the laptop works well, however I always worry about my and in turn, my clients data corrupting, backups etc. I use Time Machine within an isolated network attached to an older Synology NAS (with 2x3tb in mirror), which seems to backup well. However, about once every 2-3 months it pops up a message saying it needs to rebuild the time machine backup, deleting the old one. My main concern is if the Mac fails (anything apart from the ssd), then as with all modern apple products, my data is screwed as I can't remove the drive. I worry that my time machine backups are also being corrupted, and as I have never needed the feature before! I run all my design files out of the dropbox sync folder, but any local development work I do is on the laptop as Dropbox has a million file limit and I hit that mighty fast (besides the index was unstable and took days to re-index). My question here is, what would be the best and most affordable way of working directly off a file server in a raid setting that gives me redundancy? Is it best to get a better NAS drive? Or use an older mac mini with attached storage? Or something similar? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have an existing build running with an Adaptec 6805 raid card and I am running out of available space, so I decided to ditch Raid10 for all drives and go for the more versatile unraid. However, I need some help deciding the final setup for this. Some parts are on order, and some I already have. I list up the currently planned build: 1* Lian Li PC-A79B Big Tower 6* Chieftec CBP-2131SAS (3*3,5" HD hotswap bays for 5,25") 1* FSP 600W PSU 1* Intel Core i7-3770 Processor 1* MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt, Socket-1155 2* Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Sport 16GB KIT 1* Intel Quad 1Gbit/s NIC 1* Chelsio 10GbE NIC 1* Adaptec 6805 Raid controller + super conductor/memory backup 1* 90GB OCZ SSD 8* WD Red NAS 3* 8TB Seagate Ironwolf 1* 3TB HGST The hardware is listed, but I currently run 8* 3TB WD Red in Raid10. Anyway, what I need to consider and what I need help with is how to deal with my new raid. I need one raid for photo and video editing including hosting various servers (web, mail, game, torrent, ++), and one for pure media center storage. The first array will be backed up externally to a USB HD and one cloud service. I have considered running 4* 3TB disks in Raid5 to get more available space for the critical stuff, but the writing penalty is quite huge and it takes long time to rebuild the raid if it fails. I will have the HGST drive as a cold spare 3TB drive. But also thought about 6* 3TB in Raid 10. The raid 10 drives will be maintained by the adaptec controller, and the rest will be left for unraid. For the unraid part I currently think of 1*8TB as parity drive, 2*8TB+2*3TB as data. A second parity will be added later. Anyway, the most important part here is rather the PCIe lanes. I am not sure if I understand it correctly, but I feel I am running out of them: x4 lanes (Intel quad NIC) x8 lanes (Adaptec 6805 raid controller) x8 lanes (Chelsio 10 GbE NIC) With these numbers, I technically run all x16 lanes from the CPU + additional x4 lanes. I still have 4* x1 lanes available on the motherboard, will they still work so I can expand with additional x1 SATA controllers? I guess I ask if the single x1 lane slots are reserved for usage no matter what and will always work because they are part of the chipset? With the current build I will have hotswap slots available for 18 disks, but the MB+adaptec controller takes a total of 8+6 disks, meaning I would need at least extra 2 (probably 3) SATA controllers in the future as the disks get added. I mainly need help for the PCIe lanes, suggestions for how to split my raid is also welcome. I also think of running a cache drive which will improve the writing, and maybe install the scratching systems on that (like web and mail server). The unraid part will contain things I am not afraid of loosing, and will not be backed up. The raid 10 part is rather critical and will be an instant access always on raid. This post became a bit more chaotic as I hoped for, but I hope any of you get the idea regardless. So I want to focus on these two questions: Will I be able to use more PCIe slots, and if, how many of them? Which unraid/raid system would you go by for my case?

so i just made a thread about having a problem while using ftp servers(i posted it in the wrong subforum) and this GREAT guy AdmnPower solved my problem(if u want a look at it ) so this led me into thinking about using something other than ftp for a fileserver, what i want is that i can tranfer files from my pc to my phone and vice versa without using my mobile(transfering directly using the pc) while having the option to use my mobile too for transfering, if u dont understand what im saying pls take a look at the thread i made(link above)

Alright, so I have a big problem with my file server right now and not too sure how to fix it. I use my personal rig to play games and record gameplay using FRAPS and the file save directory of FRAPS is on my fileserver (saved over my gigabit network) My personal rig is intel based with an i5 4670K, 16gb ddr3 ram, 480gb ssd, and a GTX 970 4GB STRIX Edition. My file server is an upgraded HP 6005 Pro SFF PC with an AMD Athlon ii x4 640, with 8gb ddr3, 80gb intel x-25m ssd, and a 4tb WD black I use my file server for media (music, videos, games that I am not playing currently are stored on the hard drive, and for documents, etc) I also use my file server to save my gameplay recordings, so when I play games I record using FRAPS and the save directory is on the 4tb WD black hard drive My issue is that my fps goes down from ~80 fps to 25 or less fps, so my game slows down a looooooot. I record mostly GTA V, BF4, BF Hardline, CS:GO, and some other random games sometimes. Should I buy more network cards (I currently use the onboard gigabit network card) and put them in my fileserver and team them in order to get a faster local connection or what can I do in order to fix my issue? Hi Guys I'm a newbie from South Africa and Intel/Nvidia components are very expensive here. I dont make alot of money & built a little entry level Gaming and Work Setup. I am however, running out of storage. So I am thinking of building a cheap little network file storage pc thingie. I have an AMD A4 APU laying around and thought I could use that right? Is that a good Idea? I've also researched a few parts online that could work for my budget but I'm not sure as how well they would perform. Hi I am looking into building a very simple File Server just for home. I already own Windows Home Server 2007 and 2011. Or i'll just use Windows Server 2003. Doesn't Matter. But Will a Pentium 4 work fine just for storing files through a network. I have 1GB of ram in the system and it's running Windows Server 2011. The computer is a old dell, with a 1tb Hard Drive and 120gb SSD.

Hey all, So i've been thinking about buying a server to replace my Seagate business 4 bay NAS so i can get a better experience & also im interested in running a few VM's for various tasks but also a game server likely for myself and a couple friends. So im really looking to see how much i need to spend and if i need a xeon? im sure i could get away with a reasonable I5 or something but having a decent network card and a decent raid card would be nice, I live in New Zealand and was going to buy a second hand HP Rackmount such as this one due to seemingly good value for money compared to anything else around that price range. But do i really need something that big (racks take up quite a bit of space...) Well 600x600x980 is the size I was looking at. I've currently got a I7 3930k with 12gb of ram that im running a few VM's on as well as both a sickrage & couch potato bot which would be nice to move away from my main pc. Lastly how can you divvy up resources for folding? Seeing as if i end up getting the above rackmount how will i get it to use a specific amount of cpu/ram usage so it doesnt make too much noise.
