New to the forum. Watching LTT youtube for years. A little bit background about myself: Electrical Engineer in the states that travels from work site to work site frequently. Has a ThinkPad E15 Gen2 issued by my current employer. I always enjoy working with 2 monitors when possible. So I started looking up cheap 15.6" portable USB-C monitors on Aliexpress. I end up got one for around $80. Nothing fancy, 1080p and supports single USB-C connection for both Video and power supply. The seller claims that the monitor supports reverse charging to my laptop if connected with the power brick came with my laptop. This is one of the most important feature for me. I don't want to connect seperate HDMI, USB power cable every time when I need to use the monitor. A signle USB-C cable solution is optimal for people processing cheap laptop that only came with one USBC/TB port and also need it for charging. Anyway. The monitor works ok for its major functions, the panel seemed to be even better then the 300nits junk came with my ThinkPad. But I don't like the cheap cover type stand that came with it, you know, like those cover stands for ipads. Not very stable, need a good surface, sometime would allow the monitor to slip etc. I want a foldable, stable, rigid stand for my cheap portable monitor, and it better looks cool! I found nothing existing based on these search criteria. Luckly, My monitor happens to have a VESA75 M4 bolt pattern at the back. So I can build one myself. First thing first, I chose to use some kind of friction hinge (Similar to the hinge in your laptop) to build any part of my stand that requires rotation. I found the following on Aliexpress, seemed to be easy to work with and has a lot of stiffness to keep my monitor stand straight. Then I fired up Fusion360 to create a design based on using 4 of these hinges. I chose to designed the components so that they can easly be laser cut out of 3 mm stainless steel or aluminum plates. Of course some features require drilling and tapping, and even CNC milling. The design will be mostly flat and stays within the projection footprint when folded behind my monitor. But will also unfold and become a more typical stand. People with sharp physics instinct probably already noticed that the base of the this stand is a bit too short to support the monitor from tilting in some daily angles. So I change the base design a little bit. Note that the part that will be on the front side of the monitor has been extended. This change of base design will make the overall footprint expand out of the projection area of the monitor when folded. Hense became less foldable and ugly. So I had to change the design of the VESA mount and center supporting bar. This also created some room of adaptability for different size portable monitors if needed. I also designed different size center support bars trying to accommodate different size monitors. I have sent drawings out for fabrication. If folks are interested in my little project I will keep posting updates. ----------------------------------------------------------------11/11/2022 Update---------------------------------------------------------------- The parts showed up in a DHL package yesterday. Of course being so cheap they had to miss a few features... They forgot to Drill and tap all the M2.5x0.45 mini screw holes! So I had to do it with a hand drill. I also had to file the Radius feature on the center support bar. But after all that. The thing assembles fine.

After surrendering my man-cave I'm looking at options to bring my gaming setup to the living room couch. The blue bars represent steel 4cm square bars that I want welded on. I've spoken to a fabricator and it's going to be around £130. The monitor is a Acer X34A Predator which is apparantly around 5KG. Idea is that the whole weight of the couch is baring down on the bars along the floor, the couch has a wooden batton near the end of the floor bars going perpendicular to the bars. So I figure when the monitor is hanging over the couch the bars will be pressing against the floor and if I happen to swing the monitor the other side of the table, it would have to lift the whole weight of the couch to have a chance of moving. The diagrams don't show it but there is very little room for bigger table and I plan on adding a shelve within the table which will house a PC I've got to build (never built a PC eek)

I usually don't post my own YouTube videos around many places because I feel weird about promoting on forums (and hate opening myself up to the hate messages beyond YouTube comments), but this video I just have to share. Karl Hacker built this car and I really feel it needs to be seen and appreciated by more people. This is a "1968 Mini Cooper", that there isn't much "Mini" left of. It is Rear Wheel Drive with a Tube Chassis and a Cadillac NorthStar V8 engine. He built it himself in his mechanic shop with no formal background in engineering or chassis fabrication. I spent yesterday with him and rode around in the car a bit, it is a heck of a machine. So check it out if you are interested:

A few months ago, I had to sell my gaming rig, and ended up with only my trusty Thinkpad x230t for the foreseeable future. Whilst a great daily driver, it was hardly a gamer, even when it was new 6(!) years ago. I already run it using a docking station, outputting to a pair of monitors. I came across the whole eGPU scene whilst selling the desktop, and read up on the different methods for newer and older hardware, etc. Despite the underwhelming review in the LTT video, I ended up buying an EXP GDC v8.0, and hatched a plan to run an old HD6950 I had, via the expresscard slot; I wasn't keen on hard-wiring something into the mini PCIe because I want to retain portability. Here's a smattering of photos so far. ^^^The laptop, and the card I planned to run with it. Hardly earth shattering performance, but I don't have many 'spare' GPU's ^^^The EXP GDC running the card, setup was surprisingly easy, I'd heard horror stories. All it requires is a reboot each time the card is connected/disconnected ^^^The kit didn't come with the necessary cables to work with a power brick+adapters. So for now, an old desktop was a donor for it's PSU

Hi all, long time LTT viewer but first time posting in the forums I've been messing with some old hardware for an eGPU setup, which works perfectly, so now I'm planning a custom case for it made from steel and perspex. I could wax lyrical about the build, but the real question is simply regarding the mounting of the board. The intention is to make the floor and back wall from an L-shaped metal piece for strength(the power brick is hefty!), and the other panels from perspex. I didn't choose steel over ally, I just happen to already have it from a previous project. I was going to remove the casing from the EXP GDC board, and mount it directly to the base using motherboard standoffs; This gives me more clearance above, it so everything is more comfortable in what is quite a tight space... But as the power brick is fully encased in plastic and not grounded to the chassis like a desktop PSU, do I need to worry about damaging the board or even the chassis? I don't know much about the DIY side of electronics, so advice would be appreciated. I've attached pictures of components and a sketch of the layout

It turns out Apple gave production contracts to both companies for its 16nm A9 chips based on tri-gate (FinFET) designs, but neither can produce these transistors in remotely tolerable yields. Furthermore, as some analysts are suggesting, it is possible Apple could drop business with these two companies and work out a solution with Intel (having mastered 3D transistor production) in an effort to stay on the bleeding edge of technology. While this news in and of itself is inconsequential for most here, we can see the potential harm this does to competition between Intel and AMD in 2016, when Zen is due to be released on a 16/14nm FinFET process. We all know how long it took Intel to get yields up, and to have expected less struggle across the industry would have been a tad foolhardy, but this means no one apart from Intel will have 14nm working for some time, and construction of the Israel 10nm foundry has already begun. Furthermore, this could spell disaster for Nvidia which has gambled on saving the Pascal architecture for the 16nm FinFET TSMC process, leaving AMD a clear and open field for an entire year or more on the GPU front. This also means Intel's Atom processors which it is still trying to push into the phone market will gain even more process advantages and continue to shrink power and heat envelopes, meaning 2015-2016 could be the years Intel takes a foothold. These foundry problems have widespread implications, some demoralizing, some positive depending on who you root for in this giant game.
