Hi guys, Any suggestions for attempting to reformat/clean a corrupted external drive? I've tried to use diskpart to do this, but even that doesn't seem to work. It just ends up detaching the drive and not completing anything. I cannot access Disk management when the drive is plugged in, and no other disk management software seems to work when it is plugged in.

I've run into this problem with my external SSD where when i connect it to my Thunderbolt connection on my Windows PC and put my PC to sleep/shut it down, that my SSD won't turn off and starts getting hot. I assume it has something to do with Thunderbolt charging devices like phones while the pc is asleep but when i turned the feature "charge Devices via thunderbolt" off in the BIOS it didn't have any impact on this wierd behavior. Any idea what could be going on here? it's been bothering me quite some time now. PC: HP Victus 16.1 inch | Windows 10 | Product number: 4K245EA#ABH SSD: Samsung T5 1 TB SSD If you have any questions feel free to ask.

So I am looking into getting more storage for my laptop (HP spectre 15" 2019, with these external ports) and I'm trying to decide between a more 'mainstream' solution in just an external SSD or if I should get an M.2 SSD and enclosure. I mainly want to put games on it from steam/epic games store in order to free up more room on my internal SSD (i.e. leave the SSD on my desk to play games and have storage free internally for when I take my laptop with me for classes). I'm not super familiar with all of the different names and how everything works, but this is kinda what I was thinking when I say external enclosure (not sure how common these are). I had also seen some that had built in docks that I thought I could use with my second monitor - Sabrent USB 3.2 Type-C Tool-Free Enclosure for M.2 PCIe NVMe and SATA SSDs - this is the ssd w/ hub, but I'd rather avoid Kickstarter The other option would be something like this from Best Buy or Amazon or something - Samsung - T7 500GB External USB 3.2 Gen 2 Portable Solid State Drive Those are just examples to show what I was talking about, so I am VERY open to different suggestions about it just trying not to break the bank on it lol. I was also thinking it could be possible to replace my laptops 500gb SSD with a 1TB one and put the old one in the enclosure. I've never done anything like this so any advice/recommendations would be amazing, thanks!!

Hi, I am looking at options for an external SSD to work from. I will be doing CAD modelling, a bit of music production, and some video/photo editing. Ive seen a few drives in the Amazon black Friday sale. The Samsung T7, T5 and the 970 Evo plus (m.2) have all peaked my interest. I have a 970 Evo in my PC so was wondering should I get another and put it in an external SSD enclosure or stick to pre built SSDs like the T5/T7? I have the ports to use the speeds of a decent external SSD Opinions/recommendations? Thanks

To whomsoever visits and comments(Helps me)on this thread, I'm grateful to you in advance. My friend's I want to create a Multi-boot External SSD(Samsung T7) having Windows 10, Ubuntu and Kali Linux installed. I want to keep my M.2 SSD clean for gaming and my Video Production. If I encrypt my M.2 SSD with Bitlocker, will it be accessible or can it be altered in any way from the above mentioned Multi-boot Drive? My goal here is to keep my M.2 SSD safe and secure from the Multi-boot Drive. I'm open to your creative as well as technical advice. Thank you.

question STRIX ARION NVMe SSD Enclosure for Gaming and OS
Cactusmann posted a topic in Storage Devices
Hi, I'm considering buying the ROG STRIX Arion as a one-stop solution for all my portable storage problems. (I have too many USB sticks lying around) However, because the Arion is super-fast (10Gbps) I'm wondering if it's possible to run modern games off it, and potentially use it as a portable boot drive. I recall reading about gaming on external drives a long time ago, but I'm not sure if modern AAA's have become more demanding since then. As for running an OS, if it's viable to do so I plan to load Manjaro onto the drive and run GPU inference tasks. Please share your experience if you've used an Arion or similar enclosure specifically for these use-cases. I'm mostly interested in the performance, though I'm also curious about the general experience of toting one around on a daily basis. Thanks in advance!- 6 replies

Hi, I have no idea about this devices since I rarely use them. But all the sudden friends, family asked me about which one to buy. I searched for pages to compare external SSD and HD like cpu.userbenchmark dot com but found nothing besides infomercial pages with the usual top 10. And some official pages wont show the read and write rate of many models. what are the best external HD and what is the best external SSD? If you have a link to a good list, I would be very grateful. tnx

Hello everyone. Today as the first task I set my external SSD to ever truly do, I copied a decently sized video file (4.1GB) from an internal SATA SSD to the external drive . However this took way longer than I expected and I saw a weird pattern(!) in the transfer speeds. It peaked at 41 MB/s which was disappointing(advertised at 300MB/s) and then it would drop to 16 MB/s and rise to 41 again. It also would start out way more stable in it's transfer and then start this pattern. I've tested with other files of the same size and it's doing this consistently. It is a cheap 256GB drive that i got for 50% off (paid approx 30 USD for it) so my expectations weren't high. The drive was a steal at that price, but still, this is disappointing. I connected it to a 3.0 USB socket. My real question is: Why is it doing this pattern? It seems eerily consistent. Maybe it's just me being used to internal drives, but eh. I don't know a lot about the way components work besides what I can find out after a quick google. I can build computers and set them up, and that's about it. I'm no engineer. Just to clarify: I am not seeking an answer as to if my drive is good or bad etc. Just an explanation as to why it is doing this. Edit: The front ports of my case are either internally hooked up to a usb 2.0 connector on the motherboard or just mislabeled. After connecting the drive to the rear of the case to a connector i know 100% is usb 3.0 I got these results: Same pattern, but higher speeds. the first few seconds were at the advertised 300 MB/s

Hello Everyone, I just bought an External SSD and when I was formatting it I found that formatting a single disk with REFS was now possible (Win 10 Pro---Creators Update) and there was no need to make a storage pool. Should I format my External SSD with REFS? also I have an external HDD, what about that? Also my laptop config is a 256GB m.2 ssd for boot and a 2TB hard disk for storage, should I format the 2TB Hard disk with REFS?

I doubt this question has been asked before. I would like to know if there are any differences to benchmarking a computer using tools and or programs that are stored on an external USB SSD drive versus having the benchmark tools and programs stored on the C drive of the computer being tested. An example I can use is that my friend has a new computer and they want to know the performance of it using whatever tools and programs are necessary to show its performance but do not want them to be downloaded to the PC's storage. I have multiple tools and programs that I keep on a removable USB drive. I know that I can benchmark the PC using those tools contained on the removable drive but would I get different results by having all of those tools on the C drive of their computer or does it not matter? Thanks for any advice.

Hi, I have a problem with Samsung T7 Touch. Have you guys ever used/tested it and see the same problem before? I have the 2TB version of this SSD. The drive tends to stop working and restart itself very often when I transfered a lot of files or a large file out of it. It happened a couple times when I was watching videos from it. I thought it was a heat problem so I put a fan on it to cool it down. Didn't fix the problem. I changed from USB C to USB A port hoping that slower speed might make a difference, nope. I tried it with 3 different powerhouse computers (Razer Blade 15, Lenovo P53 and an Intel Xenon workstation). The firmware is up-to-date and I used the cables that came with the drive. I also tried the different cables but still didn't fix the problem. I got a replacement from Amazon and the problem is still there so I think it should be the design problem. I saw a few people on Amazon with the same problem. Thanks!

Hope this is the correct platform to ask this question. I own a Dell XPS 15 (2016) model with a 512 GB internal SSD and 16 GB Ram installed with latest windows 10 update. I want to dual boot my laptop with Ubuntu, but I don't want to install Ubuntu on the same internal SSD drive. I was thinking of buying an external Lacie SSD thunderbolt for Ubuntu so that I can connect it with Thunderbolt port and using it along with windows 10. Hence Dual booting in 2 different drive ( Windows 10 in Internal SSD, Ubuntu in External SSD). I want SSD for faster performance. I was using the Oracle VIrtual box on windows 10 for Ubuntu, but the performance is not what I expected. I can try to do it myself but it's a really huge investment so I am worried about damaging the SSD or my laptop in some way. My Questions: Is this a good idea? What are the shortcomings? Any disadvantages to laptop or external SSD? I know that External Drives have a shorter lifespan. So can anyone suggest any Desktop HDD/SSD which has a good lifespan? Is there any tutorial for this? Best way explained somewhere: A walkthrough maybe?

Hi, I was wondering what are the minimum requirements to game optimaly without studder, lag or any other detriment on an external ssd. I see everybody gaming on external drives on YouTube but is a cheaper USB 3 drive enough or should I aim to thunderbolt 3? Thanks.

I'm planing on buying a computer with non upgradable 512gb of PCIe internal storage which as much as it is fast it is pretty limited. So I plan on leaving my games internally, backing up all my movies and series on my unlimited Amazon cloud service and buy an external hard drive to put my most recent movies and series. Can anyone tell me a very reliable external mobile hard drive? I know all hard drives eventually die but I'm talking about one that wouldn't die at least int he first year. Seagate and WD external drives both have horror stories of them not working, many times in the first month or so. An external SSD would be a more reliable option but also much pricier that I would want. Any suggestions?
