I have a couple of old 1 TB laptop HDD that I was going to try to use as storage in my PC. When I connect them to my PC via a USB 3.0 Hard drive Adapter (it works for both 3.5" and 2.5"), Windows 10 just tries to continually recognize the drive. Eventually I will get an error stating "D:\ is not accessible. A device which does not exist was specified". However, I can't actually right click on the drive in Window Explorer. nor does it ever show up in Disk Management. I am assuming that these HDD are not recoverable. If that's the case, am I still able to format them somehow? Thanks.

Hi, I found this kinda old hdd that seems to be super slow. its currently running at SATA/300 even tho it supports SATA/600 and the transfer speeds are very slow it used to be faster with 100mb/s

Hi everyone I'm trying to connect my old 2.5" hdd to my computer with a sata usb adapter, but it won't work. When I use the exact same cable, adapter and hdd on a laptop, everything works perfectly. One of my laptops is a 14 year old lenovo thinkpad and the other one is a very cheap crappy celeron laptop, but both of them can see, write to and read from the hdd. When I connect it to my PC ( 650W gold psu 1070ti r5 1600), the hdd spins up for a bit and then stops. Sometimes it shows a drive in drive settings with "no media inserted" I am at a loss I can't imagine why a random pair of laptops would work but a decently powerful pc doesn't Thanks in advance for your help

Hello, I've recently installed 4x 32gb modules (KINGSTON Fury 3200MHz (KF432C16BBAK2/64)) to my current setup (Ryzen 7 2700x & Aorus X570 Elite) and I've noticed there are quite a few random blue screen errors. Could this be due to the fact that memory speed in the BIOS was set to 3200mhz, 'cause apparently 2700x only supports speeds up to 2933mhz? If I set it to 2933mhz, should I expect "smooth sailing" so to speak? And to add something a bit unrelated to the upper subject.....is it true that RGB FUSION is affecting the external harddrives? Thank you all in advance.

Hello guys, I have a Toshiba 750gb external hard drive that I bought 8 years ago. I built a pc some years ago on an extremelly limited budget and I removed the hard drive form its external enclosure and converted it into an internal. I dont remember if this was my boot drive or if it was secondary. Now I later purchased a higher capacity hard drive and put that to be internal , and tried to convert the toshiba drive again to an external. ( i kept the enclosure and the circuit adapter that it connected to ) But when I reassembled the enclosure with the drive and plugged it into my computer all kinds of problems occured. I have to note here that I didnt reformat anything I used the drive as it was.. ( I guess a big mistake but i wasnt that experienced , not that I am now ) So now , I want to recover the files that are inside , nothing overly important, a 2000 song file collection etc. Also it is a USB3.0 drive , when i use a 3.0 port I get blue light from the circuit board and the driver isnt showing up, sometimes for no reason it gets into USB2.0 mode and it behaves similarly ( with some minor differences ) to when I connect it to a usb 2.0 port: When I open "This Pc" the disk is assigned as E: and doesnt show size or any info, I get the green loading bar on the location path, but it loads vert slowly , after it loads the disk dissappears from the devices and drives tab, and sometimes i get a message from windows that the usb device isnt recognized etc. When I try to just access the properties of the disk the properties window crashes. I tried using the Eassos Recovery Program, but even that becomes unresponsive after just selecting the disk for recovery, in the case that the program works eventually and i try to recover data either the disk dissapears again in the procces , or it show that it is scanned and that there are no files to be recovered. Mostly it likes to crash. Using the cmd and the command chkdsk /f E: there have been 2 instances , one i get that the file system is NTFS but the ntfs boot sector is unreadable or corrupt, OR I get the info that I provide with the screenshot below..( I searched for the error codes on Google but didnt find anything ) Using the disk managment tool , when using 3.0 driver shows up as RAW file system, when in 2.0 port the disk managment program crashes. Now I have been thinking that maybe if I use a new circuit-adapter ( sata to usb essentialy ) maybe will solve the problem. But I am no expert and I would like your opinion and if theres a more available solution right now. Thanks in advance for any help

Need assistance to recover my data from my External HDD
appr3ntic3 posted a topic in Storage Devices
Hey All, I happened to buy an External Hard Drive(Transcend 1TB USB 3.1 Gen 1 StoreJet 25M3S SJ25M3S Rugged External Hard Drive) from a local dealer a year back. I have not used that drive that much, sparsely 10-15 times till date. I just used it to backup my photos and stuffs from my phone in that hard drive. And i don't have any other backups. . Yesterday when i tried to connect that Drive, it suddenly says "You Need to Format the disk in drive before you can use it". I am scared af right now. I tried to reconnect it few times but it doesn't work and says the same thing. Another thing, i have never mishandled my device ever and yes it has not fallen off from anywhere. Have anyone ever had faced a similar issue previously ? If yes, then please help me get out of this mess. I just don't want to lose any of my data. P.S. I just researched a bit about this HDD in amazon and it doesn't have much good reviews so please show me a ray of hope anyone. Thanks in advance !!! I have the snap of the issue i faced along with the picture of HDD for your reference.- 2 replies

I have a crucial ssd was using it as a primary boot drive for a windows 10 laptop, I don't use this laptop anymore but I often need data from this drive so I put it inside an external hdd usb case and it works as an external drive. My problem is that sometimes it doesn't get recognized at all when connecting it via usb, until i plug it back into the original laptop and boot from it once. My guess is that it have to do with the bootable windows partition on it, but i dont want to fully format it.

Hi everyone, Would like your thoughts around creating a bootable external HDD/SDD with either Windows 10 or Linux Mint. I'd like to bring a portable OS with all my work and games and use it at my friend's gaming PC; ideally I'll be doing some rendering and some gaming while I'm staying over. Here are my questions: If my friend's PC uses Windows 10 and my bootable external HDD also contains Windows 10, will there be any conflict when it starts up? If so, will it be better to use Linux Mint in this case? Once I boot into my personal drive on their PC, will I be able to see my friend's hard drives? I'd like to keep his hard drives and my own stuff separate. Have read that you can unmount drives in Win 10; does this mean that every time I use his PC with my external drive that I'll need to unmount them? In the event that my external drive has a virus or malware, will my friend's PC also be impacted? As a safety measure, I'd like to understand how this will impact them since this isn't my own PC. Appreciate your comments and help. Thanks!

I need a laptop for uni, and so I have taken my mum's one, which she barely ever uses. She still wants to be able to use it for work though. I am trying to set it up so that all she has to do is plug in the HDD from her laptop via USB, and it will boot. I have taken the old hard drive out, and changed the boot order so that it boots from USB first. I have enabled legacy USB. When I try to boot up, it freezes at the loading screen with the windows logo, then about 3 seconds later it just boots to the hard drive I have put inside the laptop. I tried putting the HDD back in to the laptop to make sure it wasn't an HDD problem, and it boots as usual. How do I get the hard drive to boot from SATA to USB cable?

Hi everyone, I am planning on upgrading and clean installing Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my PC. I want to save all of my files/folders/data on my computer and will be using a WD My Passport Ultra for the job. My question is should I do a backup or a complete image? My thought was if I did a system image I have my Windows 7 files just in case something goes wrong and I know that EVERYTHING on my PC is on that image in case I forget something. Also is the windows backup/image utility good or should I use a third party program like Macrium Reflect? I don't want to screw anything up as I hear speculation on the Windows utility. I look forward to your responses!

Hi everyone, I recently created a system image of my PC on an external HDD. After much though I decided I want to delete the image because I can't physically access my files from the image, and want to do a regular backup. I can't seem to delete the image in control panel and it looks like the only option is to delete the WindowsImageBackup folder created on the external HDD. My question basically is if deleting that folder is safe? Thanks

So I got a new notebook for school... And I got a weird yet awesome idea I want to try it out. Is there a way that I can get a external HDD. Load it with a bunch of different OS (Windows, Linux... Hackintosh for whatever stupid reason) and be able to just run whatever one I felt like using? Don't care if I have to go into BIOS and select the HDD (So the bootloader to choose which OS I want to use is on the external HDD itself not on the notebook). I was wondering if it was possible? Why? Because I am a very bored person right now...

Hey Guys, I hope one of you can help me out here. I know my way around computers and Windows, and yes i googled these issues before. I switched from a desktop PC to a laptop for my videography work - so I need storage, some fast and some with high capacity. All the HDD's from my PC had to go into external usb 3.0 cases so that i could connect them to the Blade. Whats now happening is really wierd, and there are essentially two seperate Issues: 1. Disk 1 (In the disk manager) always gets marked as "read only" no matter what drive on what usb port in which ever case. If i unplug Disk1 and plug in a different SSD it shows up as read only. All of the enclosures work and so do the USB-Ports, it seems like Disk 1 always gets marked as read only. 2. I had two bigger HDD's in my system before. If i plug them in they show up in the Disk Managment Tool but one (the 4tb) needs formatting to be used. The other one just says "No Media" but doesnt offer to assign a drive letter or make it active in any way. They obviously contained Data and i dont want to format them. They worked in my PC fine, but i cant check it now as my GPU failed - thats why i got the Blade now. Hopefully someone can help me out here. Thanks!

Hey (I'm using Windows 7, I've tried all USB ports 2 and 3). I've come across a strange problem with my external HDD (Toshiba). When I connect the HDD to my comuter the drive shows signs of working normally (sound and blinking light), but I don't get any popups on my PC. I can then only google stuff and get results, but when I try to open a webpage I only get "This site can’t be reached linustechtips.com took too long to respond. Try: Checking the connection Checking the proxy and the firewall Running Windows Network Diagnostics ERR_TIMED_OUT" The HDD does show up under computer as Local Disk (E:) though, but when trying to access it the green bar at the top loads slower and slower when nearing the end and then... Still nothing after an hour. It just gets infinitely slow.

Hi everyone, I currently have a PC with windows 10 installed. I also have a completely empty 2TB external hard drive which is connected but not used for anything, other than a few files here and there. I am wondering if I can download multiple OS to this external hard drive (linux mint, windows 7, ubuntu) and be able to boot any of them when I want (also i'd like to know how easy it would to boot the desired OS). I would also like to keep about 500gb free for any files i need to store. Is this possible? Thanks in advance.

Recently, My Hard Drive went "Raw" probably because my PC shut down on its own while the drive was connected. I was able to recover all of my files and I looked up online all I have to do to fix the drive is to reformat it back to NTFS. Problem is when I was formatting it it stopped and says "windows was unable to complete the format" so I unchecked "quick format" and it seems to be taking very very long. My files in the drive is atleast 200GB and the drive is 2TB. It is a WD Elements drive. I don't have that much patience and I worry about keeping my PC running for a very very long time. The Data Recovery took about 1 Day to complete and will formatting the drive will take 1 day to complete as well? Is there any other way to fix it? thanks

I have this really old external HDD. It's so old it has it's own power brick and the box says it's usb 2.0 only. (so obviously i should only use usb 2.0 for this drive) When I plug it in to any computer, windows does detect it as being present in devices and printers, however it doesn't show up in file explorer. I tried running the trouble shooter and it didn't detect any problems. I've also tried assigning drive letters in disk management, but they all seemed to be greyed out. I'm not really sure what the issue is. It might be that the HDD is that old it's just dead. I have no idea. I've provided a couple of images of it beng detected in devices and printers and it showing up on as Disk 2 on disk managemnet if that helps. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

Hello Everyone, I have a simple question, for which I cannot find an answer to. Can I make a Software RAID 1 drive using two external HDDs ? To be more specific I want to make a RAID 1 array using two external hard drives, specifically Seagate backup plus slim 1tb (two drives), using windows in built drive partitioning tool. I cannot seem to find the answer and do not want to buy a drive just for experimentation and without knowing the answer. I have previously worked on RAID arrays using the above-mentioned windows tool, but they were internal 3.5" drives.

I have a Western Digital My Passport External HDD. Normally it is very responsive and fast. I lent it to a friend and after he returned it to me, the HDD became very laggy. The read and write speeds are very slow and the response time is also very slow. Copying a file is almost impossible because the speeds are around 1 MB/s. I tried scanning the HDD for any viruses too but the drive is so slow that it is taking forever for the antivirus to scan it. Screenshots are attached below. Please help me as I have important data on that drive. Thank you

Hey everyone! So there was this one amazing deal at a shop in my country that i could buy a slim for 180 euros. So I bought it but I literally know nothing about the PS4. Bought some games along with it and I'm really enjoying it. Anyway I bought the 500 GB version but i'm thinking to expand my storage using either an internal or external hdd. I searched a while on the internet but I found a lot of conflicting sources, some say it is possible while others say it's impossible. My question is as followed: Is it possible to install games/apps on an external HDD and play them? I have a PS4 Slim (in case that matters). Also, what would you recommend? Internal or external? Thank you for taking your time to answer my question(s)
