Hello. Excuse me, but I need some help with my expansion drive problem, I need the data inside it since there are so many private and important stuff in it. So, previously I pulled out my expansion drive while it still reading some data because I'm in a hurry to get out of the house. When coming back and checking on the drive, it won't show up on My Computer even though it's connected, there is a usb connected sound. I checked the Disk Management menu, and Picture 1 is how it looks. I tried to look for the solution online, and some local forum suggest to Rebuild the MBR so it won't erased the data while fixing the problem. The forum tell me to use the Minitool partition wizard, which I did, shown in the Picture 2, but the every option for the drive is greyed out. Please help me, I need the data inside the drive but I'm also too broke to afford data recovery service which very pricey in my country. Thank you in advance for the answers.

Hey everyone, I know, i know... the question is very basic. To be honest, i know almost nothing when it comes to external hardrives and the information i've seen everywhere else just doesn't convince me enough. BUT, i do trust this forum over reddit or any other non-specific forum so i thought id give my question a shot here. Im looking for an external hardrive (or 2) that i can use to back up my personal files as well as some work files. I guess it really only comes down to 2 hardrives which is WD and Seagate since they're usually the top picks of most and seem to be the most reliable. I dont plan on using the hardrive every single day, maybe 1-2 times per month (if that) .. Its mostly just to have a backup of my stuff so that i can do things like wiping a laptop to give to another family member, store old photos, keep an updated backup of my main laptop and maybe use it to store files that are important but nothing id urgently need daily. BUT, i could definitely see myself using a second external hardrive(other than the first one) to put temporary day-to-day files on instead of on my computer as its always possible my needs can change in the near future. I have a macbook pro '14 so the format would have to be changed to support a Mac, or if possible both Mac and PC. Id like a portable drive, but Im not completely stuck on it being portable. It would definitely be a lot more convenient but if desktop drives are more reliable then i would possibly reconsider to purchase a desktop drive. Im looking for an external hardrive thats at least 2tb or up to 5tb for around $80-150 CAD each (I could spend a little more though, its just a general amount i want to spend) . My main reason for indecision is that reliability is my main concern. It's the most important to me. Dont really care about how fast it writes or reads, its more as a backup anyways. I dont think an SSD would be the best option for me since i would likely need at least 2tb and dont want to spend an insane amount on one, plus iv'e heard they dont necessarily last longer than the HDD's , but i understand the reliability of a SSD & HDD are just different based on use. I saw backblaze's 2019 drive failure report and it definitely gave me a different perspective on how safe my backups actually are vs. how safe i thought they are. Based on the general consensus on the internet i came to the conclusion that WD's newer passport or Seagates slim back up drive would be best for my use cases but the failure rate of the drives are still bothering me and id like some other educated opinions. Also , i know many people would say that if reliability and security of my data is SO important then i should just use something like a Synology Nas and have multiple drives copied etc etc. It makes a ton of sense; but, i know that even those can fail and im not mentally prepared to set them up at this point in time. Also, i dont want run the risk of something going wrong in the future and not knowing how in the world im going to fix it or secure it from attacks lol. I just dont think i am there yet nor do i have that much data. Plus, its not even somewhat portable. i'm unable to detect mac external hard disk on my windows pc would like read the mac drive to get the data from it . pls advise .

I have an ASUS ROG Strix B550-E and I constantly have an external 14TB WD EasyStore USB HDD plugged in. My system waits for the drive to initialize before posting. Is there any way to let the system start up/load into Windows without waiting? Can the drive be initialized and recognized after Windows loads?

I purchased a 12TB WD Easystore usb 3.0 external hard drive to backup my media files to. When i am transferring files it start out at 70mb/s and will periodically drop to 20mb/s or even stall out to 0mb/s for a few seconds then go back up to 70mb/s then back down again. I have tried changing to removable device policy from quick disconnect to better performance and the only change is instead of capping at 70mb/s it caps at 30mb/s but the fluctuation to 20mb/s or even 0mb/s is still there. I purchased the drive yesterday and i was getting steady 100mb/s+ transfers yesterday but today this is happening. any idea what is going on?

new user here, I was wondering if some one could help me out on how can I convert a hard drives format from EXfat to NTFS without loosing any data. if someone asks why is the hard drive EXfat in the first place its because that I have a Mac at home and at uni its windows .

Hi all! I've been pulling out my hair for a month. So much time looking everywhere to figure this out but I'm lost. I have an Asus FX705DT Laptop. It has: 2x USB 3.0 1x USB 2.0 I attached a screenshot of the USB transfer speed. I have a 4TB seagate srd00f2 USB 3.0 hard drive. When I plug it into the 3.0 connection it will copy at 400+ MB/s then immediately drop and show it's copying at a few kb/s but there is zero activity in task manager. If I plug it into 2.0 it does the same thing. 400+ MB/s then drop. As you can see in the attached image it will copy at around 7MB/s, then spike up past 200+MB/s, then back down to 7MB/s over and over. The first 5 smaller peaks is all the same file. It wasn't copying more than one file during that time. If I plug into USB 3.0, delete the USB driver, and reinstall it. It will copy around 15 MB/s steady the whole time with no peaks. But once I unplug the drive, if I want it to work on USB 3.0 again I need to uninstall the driver again or it starts at 100MB+/s, then just comes to a crashing stop. Its so weird. If I'm copying multiple files around 1GB each, it will speed through and copy 400MB of each file instantly, then it slows to 7MB until the start of the next file where it zooms through almost half the file again then back to 7MB. Unless its a large file it will peak up and down over and over like I mentioned above. I have other USB 3.0 devices and none of them do this same thing. Both 3.0 ports work 100% perfect with other devices. But I do have a Logitech G502 wired mouse that doesn't work on the 3.0 but works on the 2.0. It makes no sense. I wiped this laptop when I bought it and reinstalled windows. Went to Asus website and installed all drivers. I have 2 of the 4TB hard drives(Both identical bought at same time) on my past laptop which had one 3.0 port both drives worked flawlessly on it. But now out of the blue neither work on this laptop. I reinstalled windows a second time to see if it would help but no luck. If any of you can offer even a speck of advice I would be forever in your debt. So many hours and I have no clue. So i can access media in the portable harddisk wirelessly via wifi with my other devices in home. So what should i do or buy to setup such requirement?

Hi there, For some reason whenever i plug my external hardrive into my PC, the values to show the amount of space being used doesn't appear. The graphical icon appears but the values underneath don't. So I can't actually see how much i'm using. Check out the picture below, as you an see, my normal internal hardrives have the values underneath the icons to show the amount used, but the external drive doesn't. It's strange because it only started hiding the values recently on my external drive. Is there any way i can fix this, so that my external hardrive has the values underneath the icon for the amount of space used, like my other internal drives. Thanks

My drive seem to make a wierd noise, it is detected in device manager and is "working properly" although it is shown as an icon in explorer but i can't open it, sometimes i am able to see content in it but space keeps decreasing everytime i plug in, I delete stuff, i plug it again, stuff is still there. I started disk check after like 15,000 attempts of plug in plug out, it concluded with no error. The drive is detected in task manager, with 100% usage, with no writes or read and peaks of delay and reads in between. It's a 1TB drive with 16.6 gb free, which kept on decreasing everytime i pluged in and it was successfully detected, it was like 16.6 to 15.8 to 15.6 Last time when it was working properly, i was copying something on it and the copying failed with "catastrophic failure". After that it all problem started Is there something fixable i can do? or should I go for replacement, since it's in warranty

I just connected an external hardrive via usb to my router enabled samba sharing and I went to my network in file explorer to find the drive but it is showing up as a computer and I cannot map the drive. Any ideas on what to do as a fix ?

Hello, I'm having some troubles with Windows 7 (which is installed on an SSD) not displaying icons of programs that are installed on an external HDD, see this screenshot of my desktop. It's a not a "real" external HDD, it's actually a standard HDD in a special case, connected to the computer with a USB cable. Everything was fine for a year and a half until today. Here are the different problems that occured today out of nowhere : - Computer took a lot longer than usual to boot. Bios screen stayed up for about ten seconds, while I usually don't even have time to see it. The little Windows loading animation ran completely, though the boot up is usually over long before the end of the animation. - Mouse didn't work, as if it's not even plugged in (LEDs off). - External HDD didn't work. I thought it would be really weird that two of my USB ports would be broken all of a sudden, while the others still worked fine. So I just unplugged and re-plugged my mouse and my external hard drive : it solved the problem. BUT : - Computer still boots slowly - Icons from HDD still not showing up. If you have experienced similar things, or if you know anything that could help me, it would be really nice to share ! PS : sorry for my english ! Edit : typos and stuff

Been using my seagate 1TB external hard drive for a while now and today I discovered that while in my bag the USB SS slot has broken, I have attached images below. Anyone know of a way of fixing it? Will it be fixable in a computer shop? and if not will I still be able to save all my files that are on it? The cable is not damages but the inside the hard drive bent metal in the connector can be seen, along with the connectors on the actual port being bent upwards need a response as soon as possible, cheers
