I just love the idea of having device that can go from handheld to dock mode when you need more power. Steam deck plugs into a Rx 67000xt via m.2 port. Built a custom back plate to allow easy access to the port, also provides cooling, storage and houses a dongle. The dock houses the GPU, Power supply, and a 13.5 inch 2k 60hz monitor. I designed and 3d printed most of the parts total build coast $950 US most of the parts are second hand check out the full build here:

Hi all, I have a Lenovo Ideapad with 8gb DDR4 and a 10th gen i5. Pretty decent stuff for gaming. Problem is, it only has Intel HD graphics. I have a beautiful rig with a 2070 Super at home, but it's a pain taking my PC setup with me to college. For some reason, I have seen back and forth information on what kinds of laptops can actually be compatible with an e-GPU. My laptop has a USB-C port, so is that good enough? Does it have to be a certain kind of port? If so, what kind of port do I need to be able to use an external GPU?

Hello people, I have a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7(14ARE05 (82A2005KMH)) and I was wondering If I could use an external GPU with this laptop. I'm not sure if the Gen 2 is capable of doing this. In my pc I have an RTX 3070ti that I wanna make as an external GPU because I don't have the space anymore for a full size PC, so I'm trying to use my laptop as my new PC but the GPU in the laptop is not the best for gaming so that's why I wanna use the RTX 3070ti in some sort of external enclosure. Here's the specsheet of the laptop: https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/Yoga/Yoga_Slim_7_14ARE05?M=82A2005KMH Anyone knows something about this? Thanks!

Hey, so as the title explains I'm looking for a laptop but struggling with some odd requirements, I'm planning on moving away from desktop to a laptop, however my plan is to have an external gpu for when I want the extra power, so I'm trying to find a laptop that's got a decent cpu (my current pc has a ryzen 3 3300x in it so not terribly hard to beat haha), 16gb of memory (upgradable would be nice, but the way modern laptops are, eh oh well as long as it has at least 16gb) and its gotta have thunderbolt 3 for the external gpu. So that's where I'm struggling because I do find ones that fit these but they're super expensive because they include pretty decent gpu's so I'm just wondering if there's cheaper ones that fit these requirements as I already own a decent desktop gpu. I'm perfectly fine buying second hand if it can save money as ideally I don't wanna be shelling out thousands. Thnaks in advance!

To summarize a fairly complicated story, I have a personally owned rugged portable laptop, for my job 12th Gen. Intel® Core™ i7-1260U, 32GB Ram it has a thunderbolt port. I recently lost my gaming laptop, due to a water accident (it was deemed unrepairable). I want to replace it with something that is the best of both worlds. My question is are E GPUs still a good option for 2023. I play a decent amount of games, (KSP, CSGO, DCS). I do not do any video editing, but I a bit of photoshop work every once and a while.

I have an unusual set up, 2018 Razer Blade along with a 2080ti in an external gpu, I don't quite under the power loss from my GPU being connected through thunderbolt 3. And I also don't understand how my 1070 is capable of running a monitor while I have my 2080ti connected. Are there any bottle necks, or hazards along with running this set up? Also general advice for optimizing my set up (not building an actual desktop) 2080ti is running a 60 fps tv, and a 240hz monitor. 1070 is running a 60fps monitor. All monitors are 1080p. I play: Starcraft, Age of Empires, and Fortnite. *Where is the bottleneck and why: CPU, GPU, Thunderbolt 3 *How can I optimize this set up to the best gaming standards? Ie: upgrade laptop to the new 2020 razer blade with the 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10750H 6-Core (2.6GHz / 5.0GHz) or downgrade my gpu to something more realistic. *Am I going to break something?

Hello Peeps, (First off, am I on the right forum?) What would be the best Laptop to buy to couple with an External GPU for the purpose of College work and High FPS (60+ at least) Gaming on Ultra settings @ 4K? What would the External GPU Unit (Razer Core, Alienware Graphics Amplifier, etc) be? For example, the DELL Inspiron 15 @$950 with the i7-7700HQ and the 1050Ti looked like a good option, as does the Alienware series with the GTX 1070. Would you recommend either of these, or are there other better options at the same price range? If I'm going with the Alienware 15, is the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, a recommended buy, to the Razer Core? Do the current External GPU units support the 1080Ti and cards, after? (Optional) Could you elaborate on the reasons behind your choice? Some relevant videos/content on this subject, would be excellent! (Apart from Linus' and Dave Lee's videos) What are some excellent Laptop+External GPU combinations? Some more questions What other overheads/circumstances would you advise taking into account? It appeared from some sites that CPU bottleneck could be an issue, with that in mind, will the current processors (i7-6700HQ being among the most popular) or the processor on the laptop you mention, bottleneck the GTX 1080/1080Ti? Also, what are the pros and cons of linking a Laptop of one Manufacturer with the External GPU unit of another for optimal performance? (Example Alienware with Razer Core) Thanks in advance!

Captain Pepper Linus Tech Forums 1/31/17 Jerry Rigging a Razer Core I've seen it done before, but I've only seen one true DIY version. I wanna know if it can be done without having to purchase something like the Akito Thunder (https://www.amazon.com/Thunder3-Pcie-Expansion-Box-Currently/dp/B01K5Z13I2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485886399&sr=8-1&keywords=akito+node) and I thought no better place to ask than here. I have seen a really sketchy looking one where a guy chopped up an old PC case to do it, but I really wanna see if there's a way to make one that will look better than that.

Does such a thing exist? I think it would be quite a good replacement to something like a gaming laptop for people with divorsed parents and people who move around a lot etc. Can you even make a thunderbolt drive your boot drive?

Apple talked a bit about their added external GPU support yesterday and announced a Dev Kit would come to market immediately. I when to apples developer website and found the purchase page for the Dev Kit, and ITS A GREAT DEAL! The kit for $600 comes with: Sonnet external GPU chassis with Thunderbolt 3 and 350W power supply - ? AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB graphics card - $260 Belkin USB-C to 4-port USB-A hub - $50 Promo code for $100 towards the purchase of HTC Vive VR headset - $100 Doing the math, this is a great deal for that means that even though we don't know how much the chassis will cost, it has to be below $190, because of the prices of the other accessories. Even if you buy with the intention of not using the $100 toward the Vive, thats still 290 for an external Thunderbolt 3 GPU dock. Thats compered to the other popular Thunderbolt 3 dock the Razor Core at $500.

Hey, guys, this is my first post here but I recently found out about this device and thought I should get some input here. So this device takes a standard PCIE graphics card and then adapts it to mini PCIE like you would find in a laptop wireless card. I've seen some people have success with it and others haven't had such luck. I was just wondering if any of you have had experience with this little device. If by chance you have it'd be great if you left some tips or suggestions for people like me who are interested in it.

I have a XPS 13 (Kaby Lake), I plan to use this laptop as my daily driver for the next 3-4 years. Hence, I have been wondering possible upgradability through thunderbolt 3. I have looked at different thunderbolt 3 gpu/pci-e enclosures, and they all seem to be priced astronomically. Why is this so? Also will these enclosures come down in price enough to make sense to buy in the next couple years?

Hello guys! This might not be new, but can be promising. I'm talking about the Akitio Node. It might not be as sexy as the Core, but hopefully can deliver the same, or at least close performance. It has some obvious downsides, like not having an ethernen port or USB ports, but it is almost half the price. What do you guys think about this? Is it worth to give it a shot?

Hi everyone! I fell in love with mini desktops like the Zotac ZBOX C Series, and I have a question. Is it possible to use an external gpu on a mini desktop pc like a Zotac? And if it is possible which series of Zotac mini desktops are compatible with an external gpu? Or which brand has a mini pc that is compatible with an external gpu? Thank you.

So I'm thinking about purchasing a laptop that has a i7-6650U. This laptop has a Type-C thunderbolt port. I'll be purchasing an eGPU dock with it. Probably a 1060, but let us assume a 1080 (or even a Titan idk) for sake of discussion. What would be the limits here? I believe the CPU is a dual core, which is what I am most worried about. Are there games that would simply not work well? Do you think this system could handle 2k at 144 hz? What about 1080 at 60 hz? What type of FPS would I be getting in really demanding games. Thanks, CMP

Alright so i have a Dell XPS 13 9350, that has a USB-C port that support the Thunderbolt 3 Protocol I am trying to set up an external GPU and here is my plan -External PCI-E Slot (V8.0 EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock) -HDMI 2.0 Cable -HDMI 2.0 to Thunderbolt 3 Adapter The HDMI cable will run NOT from the graphics card, but from the External Dock itself to tranfer the data to the Thunderbolt 3 port. Will this work? I have an Inspiron N5110 with an Intel Core I5 and 6G RAM. I am looking to upgrade by increasing to 8G RAM and somehow adding a new graphics card. Currently, it has an integrated graphics card (or at least that is my understanding). Is there a way I can upgrade this card or get a brand new card and use it externally like I have seen in one or more of Linus's video on youtube? I am hoping to do this if possible at a relatively inexpensive price. If you have any questions, comments or ideas please let me know.

Hi everyone, So I’ve just order a razer blade stealth in the UK and I want to get a external GPU for it. However as in the UK the Razer Core is out of stock on the UK site, it would cost nearly £600 to get one over here from the US, so I’ve been trying to find alternatives like the Asus rog XG station x2 and just wondered in the UK what are the viable options for my Razer laptop? Thanks in advance

Hello everyone! In this topic I'll propose a strange idea that most of you might just find too crazy or just plainly dumb. I'm compareing 2 laptops for gaming, one from 2014, and another from 2008! I'm currently a happy (but not satisfied) user of a Dell 7357 laptop with the i7 4500U processor and gt750m dedicated GPU. I use it for light productivity and gaming at low-ish details. I find it's CPU (which was the best one available at the time, and still is; it's soldered) a bit slow, and it's HDD is not the fastest compared to SSD-s so I started looking around if I could upgrade it but found that I can't do much. I could swap my 1TB HDD for a 128 GB SSD, but I don't want to carry an external storage, and there is no cd drive to swap (there is a spare mSATA, but DELL decided it would be nice to not include the plastic connector, so it's virtually useless). One day I was messing around with my mother's old Compaq 6730b and I tought I look for it's stats I discovered something amazing! If I would to replace the cpu for the Quad Q9100 (provided i solve the power and heat issues) and add an external gpu through Express Card (something a bit better than mine, but not too bottlenecked by PCIe 1.1 x16 speeds, like a GTX760 or 670) it would be a decent competitor (and possibly even an upgrade) to my current machine. The cpu would be a true 4 core, and not a hypert. 2 core, I could possibly overclock it to 3.0 Ghz to compete with my's 3.0 max Turbo freq and a full gtx 760 would surely beat a gt750m by abou 20%, no? This is just a theorical experiment. WHO WOULD WIN? GT750m (1080p) vs External (Express C) GTX670 (720p internal, or 1080p external) i7 4500U with 2c, 4t, 1.8Ghz base 3.0Ghz turbo vs Core2 Quad Q9100 with 4t/c, 2.26Ghz base, at highhest possible OC 3.1GHz 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz vs 8GB DDR2 800MHZ [or if possible (8GB DDR3 1000Mhz] 1TB 7200 rpm HDD vs 1TB 7200 rpm HDD + 128GB SSD or CD/DVD rom nothing vs possible 2 more Express Card expansions via docking station Please tell me your thoughts and arguments! Thanks and have fun!

I bought a Razer Blade Stealth about a year ago for deployment with the idea of also buying a Razer Core when i got back, however, it now appears to be out of stock. Are there any options that don't include buying a whole new system from another brand or am I out of luck until razer decides to restock or come out with something new akin to the Core?
