I've been looking for a good backup software for my laptop and I haven't really found anything that works how I want it to so I was hoping for suggestions. My primary computer is a laptop that I plug into a dock when I go home. What I was hoping to do was have my computer backup to an external drive automatically when I plug it into the dock. I have seena couple softwares that do that but every one I have looked at has at least one problem. I don't want to deal with constant ads and I am more than willing to pay for a good software but I don't want to do a subscription. I tried looking at open source options which would be nice but I didn't find any that work when the drive is plugged in. Any good suggestions? This is for a windows computer.

Hello, I recently upgraded my Lenovo Y50-70 Laptop's old HDD to an SSD. The Old HDD I'm using as an external hard drive and using a SATA power+Data cable combo (USB 2.0). It looks exactly like the one in the image. I have also attached a picture of my HDD. The Issue I'm having is that when I connect this to a Windows 11 PC it makes a constant, lightly auditable clicking noise. This only happens on the Windows PC, as I've successfully connected the drive using the same cable to a Mac desktop and the Lenovo laptop which it came from, which now has an SSD and a fresh install of Windows 10 as well as another laptop running Windows 10. All 3 devices and read/write and format this drive but the PC cannot even read it. Furthermore, I've used the same cable to connect another 2.5 HDD that came from a Seagate external hard and it can read/write fine on the PC. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

Is there any software that allows me to download windows 10 os on multiple partitions on a external drive? Or any method that I can use to do this. I have tried to install windows 10 normally but it won't let me interact with an external drive. I tried using WinToUSB, while it worked, it was at the cost of wiping the drive first. I emailed this company asking if the professional version would allow me to directly install windows to partitions on a external hard drive without wiping it, and there is a option for the paid version of the software thats not suppose to wipe the drive and reformat, but they responded to me saying it wont work, and suggested bcdboot.exe. I looked into bcdboot.exe and it allows me to create new boot pathways, but the problem remains how do I successfully install windows onto separate partitions first then use bcdboot.exe? As for why I am trying to partition out an external drive, I am in the car mechanic industry, I am using a laptop to flash cars, but the software for each separate car manufacturer conflicts with each other, so normally you can only have 1 type of software on a computer at a time, and deleting and reinstalling software is time consuming and a pain. So if anyone has a solution, or better method to achieve this goal, I would love to hear it.

Hello everyone, I wanted to post this here for whoever may run across it. I have confirmed an issue with Monterey 12.0-12.1 where external drives (flash drives, external drives, ssds, etc.) are slow to mount, format or unmount. This issue is solved in Monterey 12.2. If you have issues, please upgrade to the latest version of Monetrey. ~ Pickles von Brine

So I have repeatedly gotten an Io error on my windows system. I cannot do anything as every time I boot it up it simply gives me an io error. The issue is that I don’t have an Io drive connected. The only perhipherals I have connected are mouse and keyboard. So this error makes no sense at all. I have been having problems all day with my system since trying to install a new graphics card. The display works now but I cannot use the system because of this error and it is extremely frustrating.

Hi, For some time I have been looking for an external drive, however, it seems many have some form of data loss problem caused by a poor quality drive or another variable. Can anybody recommend me a drive, preferably a hdd for long-ish term storage? (Although I may just buy a hdd and transfer it to my new build so it may only be short term.) I am looking to move family photos, program files and other data of which is currently stored on a six-ish year old WD blue 5400rpm hdd. I'm not certain, but I have a suspicion the drive is due to bite the dust soon so whichever drive I transfer to needs to be of good quality as it will be the only backup, for now. I only need 500gb-1tb so I don't have much need of a nas or anything similar for this particular backup. My maximum budget is up to £100 as I am in the process of building a new pc and do not have much room for additional expenses; due to this it would be preferable that it's below my maximum . Thanks for the help in advance, Stay safe, Lex.

So my external drive can be detected on other computers and laptops but not my desktop and I can't see it in device manager or disk management. I think it might be a driver issue but I don't know where I could get the drivers. Can anyone help?

My current external HDD is a 1TB WD Elements, and I've used up 750+GB of its storage with media, and I'll have to get a new one. The laptop I'll be using for the next four years will have 512GB of storage, with no plans of expanding it yet, as I'll store media (videos, photos, footage) on my external HDD as always. I plan to repurpose my current 1TB HDD to a backup drive for my laptop. However, since I'm running out of space, I've got to get a bigger one, but having all my stuff on one drive again brings up reliability concerns. Should I get- 1x4 TB drive for all my mass storage, and not back it up. 2x2 TB drives- for mass storage and a complete clone of the mass storage drive. Probably in RAID 1 if my laptop can do it. In either case, I'll dump the stuff from my current 1TB WD drive and use that for backing up my laptop drive. What do you think? Are modern external HDDs reliable enough for me not to have to worry about this? Or should I always get two drives? Mass storage and mass storage clone? A 1x4 TB drive will cost me $115 and get me twice as much storage overall. 2x2 TB drives will cost me $140 and get me half as much storage but exponentially improved reliability.

Hello, I have a 2015 MacBook Pro retina, I use it primarily for design (Adobe CC, Sketch & Figma) just wanted to know if there is any way to use an external HD or SSD via thunderbolt 2 port as the main drive to save my design files on it without any issues, and if there are any thunderbolt 2 drives that is recommended.

Hi guys, I just got the USB 3.1 to SATA III 2.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure. I tried the standard cable that was in it (usb C to Usb 3.0), that worked fine. But when i tried my Macbook charger (usb C to usb C), it didnt get recognized. So i contacted the seller, they told me that the external drives works only with cables shorter than 1 meter. I dont know if this is true, does anyone have answers for me? BTW, my macbook charging cable is like 2m. Product link: https://www.ugreen.com/product/type_c_to_sata_external_hard_drive_enclosure-en.html Thanks for the answers.

Part list at the bottom I recently upgraded from a I5 6600k to a R7 2700x, with appropriate motherboard changes. However, not a single USB port on my case or the Mobo's IO, will recognize my portable drive. It does not show up in file explorer, disk management, or anywhere else to my knowledge. The drive is recognized by my laptop with no problems. Previously, the cases front USB 3.0 ports recognized the drive. These ports are not dead. I have tested them and each of the back IO ports with multiple devices (mice, keyboards, webcam, microphones, etc) and they all function perfectly (aside from not recognizing the drive). The cases USB 3.0 connecter is firmly seated in one of the Mobo's USB 3.1 headers. Swapping USB 3.1 headers has not helped. My power supply is semi modular, and only has an 8-pin CPU power connecter. While my new X470 board has an 8+4-pin CPU power connector. The system operates with only the 8-pin connecter, but I know 8+4 would be ideal. I ordered an 8 pin to 8+4 pin adapter along with the CPU and Mobo, however the adapter will not arrive until next Monday. The motherboard BIOS does need to be updated (it is stock). However, the drive I was going to update the BIOS with is the one it does not recognize. I have a feeling the CPU power connection is the root cause of the issue, but I have no method of verifying this until the 8+4 adapter arrives. One symptom I discovered: The system will get stuck booting up (at the windows logo / dotted spinning circle, Windows 10) while the drive is plugged into any USB port. As soon as I unplug the drive, it procedes to finish booting up almost immediately. I have repeated this test multiple times with different ports, and have gotten the same result each time. Any troubleshooting advice would be most welcomed. I can supply an additional information if there is anything I forgot. Hello there community! I was wandering if you could help me decide on what to buy between the two (WD Elements Portable, Segate Expansion Portable) The drive will be used as a storage drive for photos, documents and all sort of data. I will put all that data there for good, it's not going to be a backup drive, it will be a mass storage drive. To put it simply I need a reliable drive as I will have all my important data on it. The drive will not stay plugged in all the time and will be taken care of properly. BTW And advice on how to take care of it to make it last longer? ? Cheers! ? P.S. The drive will be a 1TB model

Hello everyone! I'm CompuGenetics, or Compu. I've been watching a lot of Linus's videos recently, and I'm really liking the atmosphere of this forum! My main reason for joining is because of a problem about my current Mac setup. I've decided to make it a challenge to fix, because it's so confusing. I'll state the issue here, but if it belongs in another section I'll gladly oblige. Long Story Short (tl;dr): Windows 10 stuck at black screen directly after Windows logo, cursor appears from center but disappears after a second of inactivity, can't log in, no drivers installed, external drive booting on a MacBook Air 2019, internal drive not partitioned, send help Long Story Medium: Original Windows 10 drive created with WindowsSupport folder from MacBook Pro, Windows 10 successful on MacBook Pro external drive, internal drive left intact. Creation of Windows 10 environment on second external drive, addition of WindowsSupport folder from MacBook Pro First boot successful with creation of Windows login through MacBook Air using usb keyboard and mouse Opening of BootCamp driver setup fails; MacBook Pro drivers not compatible with MacBook Air Seeing what happens if you switch drives and computers, apparently causes black screen after Windows logo, force shutdown several times as the issue persists Original Windows 10 environment loads after multiple forced shutdowns, major graphical glitch where pixels are scattered across the screen. Logging in was possible, but everything was just obfuscated. Finally load original Windows 10 environment on MacBook Pro, able to delete WindowsSupport folder from second drive, placement of WindowsSupport folder from MacBook Air into drive Booting the second drive (with W.S. folder from Air) onto MacBook Air shows Windows logo, then black screen, apparently frozen. Continued issue, Apple logo now replaced with spinning white wheel when loading drives Usage of USB mouse reveals that after the Windows logo, you can move the cursor around, but it's very small, often with the blue circle, and after a second of inactivity it disappears and re-centers until you move it again. Reformatting of entire second drive, including EFI partition. Re-creation of Windows 10 environment onto the drive, WindowsSupport folder from MacBook Air obtained and placed onto drive. Attempt at a load of the second drive onto a MacBook Pro, but fails in the exact same way as on the Air Problem persists on MacBook Air, but the cursor has returned to normal size, and after the second hard boot, the Apple logo returns, no spinning wheel. More shutdowns and waiting prove ineffective MacBook Pro now has the same issue on the original drive, spinning wheel included. Attempting to show someone the issue after a forced shutdown stopped the glitch, but the pixelation returned. Pixelation glitch fixed exact same way as before: Win+X, U, R Original Windows 10 environment is perfectly normal now, but the problem persists on the second drive and computer. And that's where we are. If you want the long story just ask details. I cannot seem to figure out what the issue is; it can't just be the computer; it can transfer from computer to computer via the drive. Yet it can't be the drive; I completely reformatted it and recreated all of Windows and the computer still froze! Now the question is, what exactly is going on, and what can be done? Thank you for reading this far, it means a lot, and thank you in advance for your help!

So i have a problem with my pc, when i plug my dock in to any of the ports, it doesnt register. I have tried my bros pc and it comes up fine but on mine i have no sound to indicate it connects, it doesnt show up in "my pc/computer". Usbs seem to work but not my hard drive dock or my potable hard drive, ive tested all the ports and nothing. I have a theory that it could be because of the voltage control from bios, but i have a feeling it wouldnt make sense to how it would be possible. When i altered the voltage in bios to 1.29v or 1.3v, the external drive/dock were working, but at 1.25v it wasnt but system was stable and working fine. Is this a thing? So atm im running: i9 9900k @5ghz at 1.25v (drops to 1.20v approx under load) Asus maximus xi extreme board 32gb ram @3200mhz 1.35v 1 m.2 ssd 1 sata ssd (if thats what the older ones are called) 2x hdd

So, I found this on eBay the other year. It looks like it's the front half and internals from a Toshiba branded 5.25" floppy drive. The faceplate has this protrusion out the bottom which appears to have little plastic feet on it, which indicates that it was once part of an external floppy drive, but I can't find a record of any such drive on the internet. Anybody here know something about it? I'd love to find the other half of the thing- the rest of the case and whatever hardware allowed the drive to connect externally. Here are some pictures: The markings all seem to be generic to Epson, who made the drive itself.

I recently swapped out my laptop hard drive for an SSD and installed a clean copy of windows 10 onto it. I kept the old drive and put it in an enclosure. The SSD works fine, but I would like to be able to boot from the external drive, which still has all of the original files. When I try to boot off the external drive, I get the Windows 10 startup repair screen. Selecting "boot from EFI USB" restarts the computer, only to go into the same repair screen. Any advice?

(or ugly?) anyone see anything wrong with them that I might be missing because I'm blind? I plan on using it for a Guff drive, just to put my stuff that I don't plan to use anytime soon, (videos, photos, backups etc.) Any advice would be appreciated!

hi guys, i looked around but couldn't find any topics describing this exact thing. if there is something please point me to it. thanks. so what i'm having trouble understanding why the following is happening. I have 2 identical external HDD drives. both from the same manufacturer. Same capacity, same model etc. One is for storage, the second one is just a backup of the first one. so i just basically copied over everything using windows explorer copy / paste . nothing fancy. every time I add something to the original drive, i add the same thing to the backup drive as well. put it in the same location within a folder etc. etc. now the weird part is that windows is showing me different remaining capacities on these 2 drives even though they have the same files etc. as described. any ideas? thanks
