Summary Apple plans to allow some developers to distribute their iOS apps directly from websites in EU countries. However, developers must follow Apple's strict rules and meet notarization requirements to protect the integrity of the platform. Users must approve the developer in the settings of their iPhone and a system window will display information that the developer has submitted to Apple for review. Only major developers who meet specific criteria, including one million first annual installations in the EU, will be able to use this distribution method. Quotes My thoughts The fact that this is limited to only big major developers is such a shame, since this means that the ability to distribute iOS apps via websites will not available for 99% of all developers. Also, it's worth discussing if most users will even care to go trough the hoops of approving developers from websites just to avoid the App Store. Once again, Apple has made the option of distributing and downloading from outside of the App Store such a painful process for both developers and consumers that I doubt that the DMA (Digital Markets Act) from the European Unionen will have much effect at all in the end. Summary Epic Games says Apple has taken down its newly reinstated developer account in the EU. In a blog post, Epic partially blames a tweet where they criticized Apple's reason for doing so. Epic says this hinders its plans to launch a competing app marketplace in the EU. The game maker also says that Apple has called them a "threat to their ecosystem." The tweet(s) in question: Quotes My thoughts I really like Apple's products, but they are a very toxic company and very hostile to their developers and users. As a iOS/macOS developer myself, I can say that Apple has made the EU's Digital Markets Acts as horrible for developers as possible by making it an unattractive, expensive, and frustrating experience when trying to use anything other than the App Store to distribute apps. Summary For EU users, iOS 17.4 removes the ability to install PWA (Progressive Web Apps) on Apple devices. This change rolls out among a long list of other changes to comply with the EU’s recent rulings, forcing Apple to open up their platforms to third-party stores for apps, web browsers etc. Apple is therefore making these changes in accordance with this the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Quotes My thoughts It sucks that they do this since I use it. Probably a tactic to make using anything but a real native app a horrible experience. And since using third-party app stores seems like it’ll be a major headache for the average user, this will just force even more users to use Apple’s App Store. Hey, I'm asking here because my question are getting banned on r/framework. Framework doesn't allow you to ship to all EU countries. That is fine, but they actively penilize users that try to buy laptop in supported country and take it back home into unsupported country. My case is that I lived Germany, bought framework laptop and then moved to an unsupported country few months later. My laptop broke and Framework voided my warranty because I traveled with the Framework laptop outside of Germany. I lived in Germany, I wasn't home when the parcel was supposed to arrive so I ship forwarded (that's what I always do when I'm not home). And Framework is denying my warranty claim because I used ship forwarding when ordering my laptop. And it's not that they don't want to pay for shipping. They rejected to send me replacement to my old German address (my old roommate still lives there). They just outright ignore my emails or reply with different version of "you broke ToC, we won't respond to your request". I asked ECC, and all of them told me that this is not legal and that it's some BS, but since I don't have contract with EU based entity they can't help (these laws apply even for american companies, just ECC is supposed to watch only EU based companies). They said that some German authorities could help, I reached out to them for help. After the reading the full framework ship forwarding page they even say that "hand-carrying laptop into unsupported country" is enough to get your warranty voided. Which is insane especially in europe where people cross borders very frequently. I like framework, but this is shitty and illegal practice. For americans: imagine if they voided your warranty if you traveled to a different state on vacation. What can I do to get my warranty accepted (as required by European/German law)? EDIT: originally I wanted to make this complain sound more insane so I didn't tell the full truth. That was not good idea, sorry. I corrected the story to contain all information. I left all old text in place, but crossed out.

Hi guys! As you probably know, there's a big sale coming up for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, but the shipping costs are pretty high for EU...anyone wants to do a group buy and then just send it internally within EU to each other?

EU opens investigation into X Quotes My thoughts: I am glad that the EU is taking action. This situation with X.com has been an ongoing problem for this year. April (12/04/23) James Clayton from the BBC interviewed Elon on this topic; however James didn`t appear to have done his research beforehand and made a fool of himself. In terms of X, I have also had similar experiences of seeing unnecessary gore and violence on Twitter, such as dead women, children and soldiers, and plenty of misinformation. which is not nice, so I tend to stay off X.com. The same thing has happened, but this time, the EU has seen it. (based on my own experience of using Twitter (x.com) Sources https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-middle-east-67073970

Summary Some pretty big news from the world of open-source software. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and TYPO3, the big four of the FOSS CMS world, have teamed up to send an open letter to EU legislators. They're worried about the EU's Proposed Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and how it could mess with the future of open-source platforms. They also held a public webinar/conference earlier today. Here is a link to their open letter. Quotes "The letter points out that, in its current form, the proposed regulations run the risk of reducing software security and undermining the EU’s core aims and values." "The primary contention is that the proposed CRA’s “commercial activity” definitions are unclear and problematic. The current non-commercial exemption in the proposed regulations fails to consider the intricate network of relationships underpinning FOSS and its roles in the digital economy." My thoughts This is a pretty big deal. Open-source software is a huge part of the digital economy, and these platforms are worried that the new regulations could put a damper on things. The fact that they're concerned about the future of platforms like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and TYPO3 is something we should all be paying attention to. They're calling for a chat with the legislators, which I think is a great move. Let's hope it leads to some positive changes. I'm am very afraid that this will lead to open source contributors leaving the platforms they are contributing to, some on twitter are afraid this might lead to them being personally accountable. Since the EU is gonna force apple to use replaceable batteries, are they gonna raise the price for EU? Will they find some excuse to raise the price globally? I bet that if they do the replaceable batteries that it will only work with Apple batteries costing 3 to 4 times more then they should be ''because they are Apple certified safe''. It annoys me that these practices aren't even far fetched, what has the industry come to... This is all speculative but what do you guys think about this? will we again just let them be or will there this time be some sort of backlash? I rather doubt the backlash...

Following an alert from the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), the European Commission and EU consumer authorities (Network of Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Authorities) contacted Nintendo to address a recurring technical problem with irresponsive controllers. Following this action, Nintendo has agreed to offer all consumers the right to repair for affected controllers of the “Nintendo Switch” gaming console free of charge, even beyond the legal guarantee. The joint action was led by the Greek Ministry of Development and Investments and the German Environment Agency, and coordinated by the European Commission. Summary Free lifelong Joycen repairs for EU citizen. Quotes My thoughts I do hope Xbox and Sony follows suit and this pushes the market to use different sensors. Summary Ylva Johansson – the EU Commissioner in charge for the Chat Control Bill proposal basically does not understand how encryption works, when introducing the law for scanning the content of the encrypted communication for child sex material. Quotes My thoughts Well she has been into family and schools for a long time and maybe she meant good [The road to hell is paved with good intentions]. I think she sees encryption as something that only criminals use and has a bad attitude towards it. She does not understand how it works, or at least did not fully understand it when someone explained to her. Even if she knew how it works, such a law will not solve the problem. And why was only Signal attacked? Does it mean that Meta and Skype are already scanning? What will stop the people from sending password-protected zip files through any messengers? So wrong on so many levels. I do see it as another try to implement the total "surveillance for the masses". Budget: Maybe 1000€ ish Country: Finland Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games, but other than that no clue, asking for a friend Other details: No parts, a PC or peripherals of my own other than headphones. 4K 120fps alternating between the two depending on situation, but that might be a long shot (do recommend a RES and FPS this could run) The specs of the system I'm looking at are: HP Z240 tower workstation Intel Xeon E3-1245 v6 | 16 GB DDR4 (single channel, 2133MT/s and CL15) | 512 GB SSD (HP sata III) | GTX 1650 4GB (New) | Windows 10 Pro Ready to use PassMark score is 16293 Price 699€ (with tax) There's also another option with a 1660ti that's 999€, otherwise same specs, PassMark score 20457 So basically the company that's selling these buys workstations in bulk, deletes all data and slaps graphics cards in them. Are these good value? Is cpu the bottleneck in the 1660ti model? Are we in a simulation? Anything else I should find out before pulling the trigger (if at all)? Thank you in advance Edit: added some info on RAM and SSD

Hi. Do you know how the VAT collection works within EU? During the last week I bought Electronics/computer stuff to be shipped from Portugal, Netherlands and Spain to Sweden (all within EU). The results: [€120] buying from Portugal store online => had to pay VAT [€170] buying from Netherlands store online => no VAT [€150] buying through eBay form a seller from Spain => had to pay VAT (eBay charged that) does anyone know how it works? Thanks!

I currently have an Intel Xeon E3-1230 v3 (from 2013) and a GTX 1070. I am and have been planning to upgrade for a bout half a year now. I'm going to change everything but the GPU and SSD. I wanted to buy and AMD CPU for quite some time now and was excited for the 5000 series. Now stock seemed to have been stabilised, but prices are still quite high. I'm from the EU, and the best/cheapest online stores shipping to me seem to be from Germany. The main ones are obviously Amazon.de, mindfactory.de, computeruniverse.de, computeruniverse.de and alternate.de (if you know of any more, please let me know). I mostly play RPG games at 1080p 60 (at least for now) but I also do occasional CAD modelling and rendering. I'm also planning to to use this setup as a new NAS when I replace it in 5-7 years. The MB I want to use if I go AMD is the micro ATX Gigabyte B550M AORUS Pro-P. The Ryzen 5 5600X MSRP converted to EUR plus VAT should be ~300. I know it doesn't work exactly like that, but on launch day it was listed at 307 €. Currently the cheapest is 344 € on mindfactory and the price has been dropping in the past few days. For comparison the Intel 10700k is 360 € (340 w/o cooler). It has 2 more cores so it should be better for rendering at least, but according to reviews it's slower in games. Now the new 11th gen Intel CPUs are rumoured to be releasing in March (although if the 11700k and 11600k will be releasing at that time is a different story) and their performance is yet to be independently tested. I wanted to buy the PC in November, but the stock scarcity has delayed me until now, so I'm getting somewhat impatient. THE ACTUAL QUESTION: Do you suggest waiting for Intel 11th gen (if nothing else, to hopefully lower Ryzen prices), buy the 10700k or the 5600X. Obviously the safest bet would be to wait, but the price and availability and performance of 11th gen are still unknown. Also it seems like a crime to buy 14 nm CPUs in 2021 tbh.

EU has forced apple to use USB C in iphone. But power supply in PCs have bad convention when comes to modular cables layout. It's a burn your house with whole family on it situation. 1 EU should mandate, okay maybe not mandate, at least standardize PSU cables. This is also directly connected to energy and climate change, rather than iphone's connection to sustainability. Intel and others are trying to standardize both atx and sfx and maybe even flex PSU. But their standardization has issues. They don't mandate a modular layout. Intel is actually trying to create different motherboard power port, 10 to 16 pin rather than 20. The whole thing is getting convoluted. Nvidia is trying a different power port 10pin for gpu? This whole thing is getting so convoluted in 5 years it's gonna be impossible to untangle this mess. within next 5 years Intel and AMD mobo and Nvidia and AMD cards will have totally different layouts and you will need more adapters inside your PC than an iphone sheeple. 2 RGB hardwares require different softwares. That is more of a problem regarding privacy and monopoly rather than direct climate change, but EU can intervene claiming sustainability issue with rgb. EU already demanding that apple release iMessage to android because they think iMessage is a monopoly. So why not pass a law to have all RGB lighting/ keyboard mouse maker to support one open source standard, without screwing up 5v or 12v hardwares. Also, no more stupid old molex for fans and RGB please. We need modern sata power or those tiny little argb ports. I bet Taran van Hemert gonna like it. One software to run all RGB XD. 3 We need to legislate game store software api too. This is not really a climate change or power shortage issue but Linus was talking the other day about EU legislating interoperability for the better of the people. Different game stores like xbox-pc, epic, steam has different softwares. We need to mandate an API that all softwares gotta support... so one game client in pc to download and buy all the games. Right now there are already several unified game clients. But the issue is in most of those unified launchers you can't install game and you can't buy games from stores. 4 Hopefully one day we will have one software to control settings of all mouse and keyboard. Although that is gonna be difficult because different mouse have different architecture. 5 I am a Linus tech tips fan. So why not also standardize power outlets. It's difficult to standardize it now in 2022 So maybe just demand Airbnb and other hotel or housing apps that they have to show labels saying this room has universal power sockets. 6 While we are at it, USB forums have their issues too. Before they name USB 4.0 supersonic hedgehog speed ³√(2*2) we need to interfere. USB cable companies and laptop device makers are not clear about their capabilities. Can a cable show display via USB C. Can a USBc port charge the device. Can a port or cable reverse charge, charge your phone via lappy? USB 4 gonna make it worse, because even though it will be fast not all laptop gonna be able to do external GPU using it. Maybe pass a law, that device manufacturer have to be totally clear about their ports. or Linus can videos like make sheet manufacturers don't say about their ports.

Summary The European Union’s General Court on Wednesday upheld an antitrust ruling against Google’s parent company, Alphabet, but reduced its fine to 4.125 billion euros ($4.12 billion) from 4.34 billion euros. Quotes My thoughts This is not even a DMA/DSA [digital markets act/digital services act ] lawsuit, and the EU is properly fining google for monopoly abuse within the android Ecosystem If the EU Had added the DMA/DSA rules on top of this lawsuit/appeal, the fines could have become even higher. At least its a good sign that the HIGH Fine is still a HIGH Fine, and not just a mere fraction of the original fine, just like with many other court cases like this where a company gets fined for 4 Billion, but it gets reduced to a mere fraction of that fine, being at most 40 Million. The European Commission has issued a proposal today to update the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) to increase the responsibility of media distribution services in stopping hate speech and to have streaming content providers increase locally produced content. http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-1873_en.htm While I can understand a lot of what they are trying to achieve with limiting hate speech and increase the amount of European produced content on platforms, I'm not sure how well they will succeed on the latter portion of this... My guess is that this will play in with region locking of content so the content provider (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) can say that their regional service is providing the quota of content, but I don't know how well it will work with producing new shows or content or what quality of content they will produce to meet this... The article on Engadget mentions that the hate speech restrictions will be applied to recorded videos and not live streams interestingly, so that will still be an issue, especially with some of the Facebook livestream issues that have happened in recent months. https://www.engadget.com/2017/05/24/eu-hate-speech-facebook-youtube-twitter-google/ Prior to becoming law though, this still has to pass the European Parliament. So this leads to two questions that are on different topics. How well will this curb hate speech in the online media and will this help to actually generate new, original and interesting content on a local basis in Europe by Netflix, Amazon and other online streaming services? I think it might make a small dent on the first point, although hate speech can be a tricky topic to define at times, and on the second, I'm just not sure on myself. I think it might lead to less streaming content overall being provided on the European markets as streaming providers play with ratios of material provided...

The EU's court has ruled that dynamic IPs can no longer be stored by websites without there being a explicit reason like protecting the website against attacks. The plaintif (a member of the german pirate party) has argued that by storing his IP a website owner could over time build up a profile of his interests and should therefore be counted as "personal data" and be protected as such. Since the EU has begun enforcing stricter policies on cookies (such as having a banner that warns users that they are being tracked) it has been increasingly difficult for website operators to track its customers for statistics and advertising purposes. In its argument, the EU court has emphasized the legitimate need of website owners to guard against cyberattacks and that it views storing each visitors IP as a reasonable means to ensure cybersecurity. It is therefore likely that dynamic IPs will still be stored going forward, but only for administrative purposes, not for statistics and marketing. as ArsTechnica notes: " The case now goes back to the German Federal Court of Justice, which will make its judgment based on the CJEU's opinion. Given the top court's reasoning, it seems likely that Breyer won't be granted an injunction restraining Germany's federal sites from storing data about his visits.
