Hey, I’m trying to boost our signal from the main house to another building. Currently the main house has the BT smart hub router and I have a TPlink extender in the other building but the wifi signal is terrible because its too far away. So I plan to run a cat6 ethernet cable round the house and into the 2nd building. But do I need to connect the cable into another router or just a extender. My current extender only has 1 ethernet port which isn’t any good as I would like to be able to be hard wired into my pc as well so I need some suggestions as to what to buy so I can do that, thank you

So randomly yesterday my PC decided to limit my download speeds to 100mbps up, and down. I don't know why and I thought it was the cable so I replaced the cable, still not fixed. I plugged the new cable into another device and it gave internet speeds I was expecting. I then thought "okay, it's probably dirty contact pins in the 2.5gig ethernet slot" so I cleaned it out with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton wool bud, waited for it to dry and still no change after all that. I then thought it was most likely a windows setting that had randomly enabled it's self that I can't find, and I mean I looked everywhere. I tried changing the Speed & Duplex to "Auto Negotiation" but I realised that was already set properly. I tried updating drivers, nothing. I tried unplugging the ethernet and plugging it back in to see if that's the issue, no luck. I came across something in task managers "network details" tab however that seems to be my problem, there's an image attached showing it but it seems the 100gbps or 1gbps has been disconnected and the 100mbps has connected it's self randomly. Does anyone know the solution to changing this? Edit: While doing a test on fast.com, the internet was at 100mbps and then suddenly jumped to 700mbps at the end of the test, then back down again when re-testing. I don't have any idea what could cause this when it's clearly limited to 100 mbps

network switch Looking for 2.5GB Network Switch Recommendations
NCSGeek posted a topic in Networking
Hello! I'm looking for recommendations for an unmanaged network switch for my specifications and usage case. I'm looking for one to take my one ethernet port/cable from my wall and split it to my PC and a raspberry pi. I'm looking for one that wont affect my ethernet speeds to my main PC (other than affecting it by the amount the raspberry pi is using, which wont be much at all). I'd greatly perfer one that is silent. I'm very sensitive to noise. My PC uses a 2.5GB connection so the switch will need to support that. Other than that, I'm just looking for a cheap but relatively quality unmanaged switch with 3-4 ports (any extra are nice but not worth spending more for to me). So in summary: 2.5GB Speeds input and bandwidth (To not bottleneck my connection to my PC) Unmanaged switch. (I dont need a managed one. If it is managed for the literal same price, then sure I guess) Fanless & Silent 3-4 Ports As cheap as reasonably possible without comprimising on quality or reputation Any recommendations/pointers is very appreciated! I've done some looking and research but as I've never bought networking hardware of this type before, I'd appreciate the opinion of others. -
so over the past couple years i have been gaming i switched isps once and the issue stopped for aabout 2 weeks then came back thats the ping i get on ookla ping on openspeed test here is where the issue starts over the last couple years the ping on open wouls sometimes drop to 20 and id have an amazing time playing games then in about aa day it goes back to high ping the low ping only lasts for about 1-2 days and happends about 5 times every year probably more but im not always gaming my issue is why im confused why sometimes my ping is super low and i can have fun gaming then it goes back to this 60 ping garbage im located in jamaica the games i play are valorant and fortnite

I've eliminated the 5g/4g Antenna can't be the Ethernet cable. The motherboard is ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XIII HERO Ethernet port blinks orange, sometimes orange and green. I have two Ethernet ports, I've had the same issue on both, and the windows update did not solve it. Windows tells me I'm connected sometimes, sometimes it tells me I'm disconnected but antenna is always connected, always green light. I've updated to latest windows update. It did not solve this issue but solved other issues, including the updated Lightroom being slow but Nvidia Driver also sped up things. So now things are faster. But still not figured out the connection issues. Should I try the latest driver? Intel I225/I226 LAN NDIS driver V1.1.4.38 for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 64-bit. https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-maximus/rog-maximus-xiii-hero-model/helpdesk_download/ I see others have issues with Driver 2.1.3.3 I see someone did this. No idea if it will solve anything.

Commercial recommendations for a network run at 1000 feet? Have a few cameras at the far end of our baseball-softball fields, both for security and for live streaming games. These are at 1000 feet from our IDF. Looking for commercial recommendations to either run GameChanger cable from Paige (vendor recommendation), through a switch somewhere in the middle or fiber the whole way? PROS/CONS and other foreseen pitfalls? After leaving our main building conduit has been pre-ran to light poles and concession stands. None of which are very well isolated from the elements, but we have put network racks in our concessions stands/press boxes. Thanks for any input provided.

I have a USB-C hub for my mac, which is connected to power, a HDMI display and an ethernet cable. For some reason when i unplug my laptop, the activity lights on the ethernet port keep flashing as long as the hub i connected to power, is this behaviour expected? Also, my home internet has been acting up lately, and i have noticed that it only seems to happen when i leave the hub connected to power. Could it be that the hub is causing my home ethernet to fail? The hub is from Sitecom.

Hi! So, I want to have my gaming PC running on my office (one of the rooms in my house) while at the same time being able to use it from the living room (plugged to a tv) and my bedroom (on a different monitor). I have all 3 rooms connected with ethernet cable and my idea was tu use a HDMI KVM I found on amazon: https://www.amazon.com.mx/gp/product/B099F2T3MS/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=ALXO6XP10HK6H&th=1 It basically connects a transmiter to my PC using usb and then uses the ethernet cable to connect to a receiver. The receiver has HDMI out put and USB ports for mouse / keyboard. I wanted to know if this is a good idea, or maybe there's a better way to do this using the existing ethernet cable I have setup? The goal is to be able to game on the living room and on my bedroom (just in case there's people on the office).

There's a decent line of sight gap in the forest, about 200m from mounting positions, with very low brush coverage that won't be expected to obstruct it. Semi-rural, so not really worried about interference. I found this article: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/point-to-point-wi-fi-bridging-between-buildings-the-cheap-and-easy-way/ and am leaning towards a pair of CPE210 because it'll be <$120 total shipped, and comes with the PoE injectors. https://www.tp-link.com/us/business-networking/outdoor-radio/cpe210/#specifications But they're a few years old - is there a Only aiming for 50Mbps - this is upgrading a 6Mbps connection that runs from a neighbours property who is refusing to allow an upgrade to run on the same poles. The receiver will be out in the open, and this is in the rainforest in BC. I have no idea if IPX5 is sufficient. This is an install for a friend who is not technically inclined, so reliability and cost are the most important factors. Any suggestions for mounting brackets that will make it easy to aim? The transmitter will be about 20m above the receiver so we'll have to aim them at an angle.

Howdy! I've recently bought my forever home and I want to make my living room desktop setup as clean as possible. The main thing I want to do is put my PC in the cellar, and just have a desk with display, mouse and keyboard in the living room. (maybe cellar isn't the right word, it's more like a completly underground floor, including a garage) There's plenty of space, it's dry, it's cool, it's the perfect place for computer equipment. I've seen the devices on the Chinese wholesale websites, HDMI over ethernet and such, but those devices only support a refresh rate of only 60hz at 1080p or 30hz for 4k. I would like a device that let's me plug in HDMI/DisplayPort on the PC side and on the monitor side, and connect the two with ethernet or whatever cable it requires. I recall Linus having a 'remote' setup like this, it's there a list of devices involved?

Hi everyone! I've been encountering a strange issue with my pc, and I thought it might be because I used Wi-Fi, but now I'm using Ethernet and encounter the same issue. the problem is that downloading things is quite slow on my computer, usually around 10mbs. I have 250mb/s internet, and it shows in every other device in my house. My laptop gets great speed, my steam deck gets great speed, but my main pc doesn't. I don't think it is a processing issue because I have a 10850K, and it's probably not an HDD issue because I see the same thing on my SSD.

My computer will randomly lose internet connection progressively on ONE computer. What I mean by this is that it'll lose certain connectivity features, without losing others. For example, when it happens I can keep watching the youtube video I have pulled up (and it will continue to buffer past its current buffer point), but I can not load any new web pages. Additionally, I will suddenly no longer be able to send any discord messages, or pull up a discord server not already pulled up, but I can continue to receive messages on my current discord server. I can even see the messages I send from my phone on the same discord server, but again, any attempts to send messages from this computer just error out when sending. On steam I will still be able to send and receive messages correctly, additionally I can continue playing MMO/online games at this point without issue (but again, can't load any new web pages anywhere) - after a little while longer, then I lose all connection, including current youtube videos will hit the end of their buffer and not continue loading buffer, discord will disconnect me, and I'll lose connection to whatever game I'm playing. Something this issue will resolve itself over several hours. Alternatively, rebooting my computer immediately restores the connection. Rebooting the router also immediately restores the connection. Or I can go into advanced network settings, disable the network adapter, enable the network adapter, and that restores the connection (though the connection appears to drop again quicker this last way compared to rebooting the PC). Originally this issue was happening on wifi, so I ran a brand new ethernet cord to the PC, but the issue was identical. Furthermore, none of the other devices, including 4 other computers have this issue on this network, it is only this computer. This is an issue I've been having for several months, but its been getting progressively worse/more frequent over time. Originally it wouldn't even disconnect fully - it would only go into the state of not sending discord messages, and not loading new webpages, but could still play games and watch video content of youtube/streaming services already pulled up. The complete connection loss (discord disconnects fully, can't play multiplayer games, etc) is a recent development within the past month or so. This computer is quite robust. its a 4090 and an i9 13900k both on a shared custom loop that I did myself. The motherboard is a gigabyte Z790 aorus master. Windows 11 is on a 980pro. For the first 6 months or so of this PC being complete, there were no network issues. The first network issues began immediately after 1 event. 1) Comcast switching the entire neighborhood over from the old wires to the new fiber system. A lot of other individuals in the neighborhood reported starting having issues around this point too. - Though since it is ONLY this PC and none of the other PCs or devices on the network, I'm not sure how it could be related. I've updated the bios 3 different times since this issue first began (three different bio revisions, that's how long this issue has been going), I've updated windows at least a dozen times. I've updated all drivers I could find, including downloading the Killer wireless utility (this was back when the issue was on wifi, before I ran an ethernet line), the ethernet adapter is a different brand though, but again the issue is the same. I've even tried connecting to a different router (I have two different routers ran to the modem). Nothing at all puts a dent into this issue. Sometimes the issue appears after several hours of using the computer, sometimes the issue appears after just a few minutes since the last restart. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows, because basically none of my programs are on my C drive where windows keeps them active, they're all on different drives. I've successfully tweaked and fixed issues in registry before, but it was never network related. I'd be more inclined to go this route if anyone thinks it could potentially be a fix without doing a completely clean Windows install that'll take several days straight to fix all my programs again. Please I'll gladly take any help from anyone who actually reads this and recommends something that I haven't already explicitly stated I've done.

I provided a drawing to help better convey my issue. Bit of context, I wanted ethernet connection for PC gaming but did not want to deal with the cable running through the whole house so I opted for a powerline adapter and been great since, the problem is that our ISP upgraded to fiber and with it came a change in modem, this modem got reduced range and the WIFI barely reaches my room giving me problems with my phone, switch and tv. So I was wondering if it's possible to connect a router to the powerline in my room to fix the WIFI issue or just leave my phone behind and buy an ethernet switch for the rest of my devices.

Okay so at home my ethernet works fine. And it used to work at my girlfriends house for a long time. Until one morning when I woke up and went to check my pc I noticed I had no Internet. Its been 1 week now and its still not working. When I troubleshoot (windows 11) it says. Can't reach the DHCP server. Things I've tried. Switching ethernet cable Turning on and off router and modem Restarting pc. Resetting firewalls. Doing ipconfig commands in cmd such as registerdns. Renew. Release. Flushdns (everything I could find on YouTube basically.) Now I have no idea what to try next.

Hello Issue: I have issue with my build in Realtek LAN card, earlier today I updated my AMD drivers to 24.1.1 and bios (ASUS Prime X670-P CSM) to BIOS v.2214. After reboot my lan connection was stuck in "identifying" ( windows 11) Ethernet adapter : Realtek Gaming 2.5Gb E Family controler Troubleshooting: Restarted PC multiple times Release/renew ipconfig command via CMD Disabled etherned adapter Uninstall etherned adapter Driver update for etherned adapter tried different cable directly from router (normally is connected via switch) From this point it gets weird at this point I just gave up,thinking that BIOS update fried the network card so I added another Broadcom PCIe network card to the PC,rebooted but it still has the same behavior which si totaly weird. So I reverted back to BIOS v1811 , no change. Set everything to default , CMOS reset - no change I reset the router to default settings - no change. I set up the static IP address to my router directly - IT JUST WORKS :D. Everything works like usual. except windows icon which says I am disconnected But problem is that I can't use VPN because it has same problem , it just can't connect to the VPN network , i got the feeling it can resolve or obtain IP address. When I revert the Static IP to automatic - again no network - only identifying. Can I solve this without reinstalling windows ? I really , REALLY don't wanna Other PCs/laptos/camers works on my network fine. Thank you all Have a great day ( at least better day as I am having :))

I'm currently getting around 90mbps on wifi and I'm tired of having 1/5 of the potential speeds on my pc. It kind of essential to have a strong connection when people like me are gaming a lot, downloading stuff. I have bought a TP-link 717 powerline adapter which worked brilliantly when i had the 74 Mbps package but i upgraded recently to 500 and it seems to peak at a speed of 110 mbps. I need some help figuring out how to be able to have low ping and better speeds for downloading games. The big problem is that my router is across the house and it cant be moved, and cant drill any holes. TLDR: -im on wifi (90mbps) -want to get low ping + higher speeds -cant get ethernet

Ive been having this problem for a while now, where every time or most times I start my pc, I will have super slow internet speeds. According to windows it is all fine and says I am connected in the bottom right hand corner. I have also have the latest windows and driver updates for all my components (you can see details below). The solution for this at the moment is unplugging and re plugging it back in and as you can see on the speeds there is a substantial difference. The cable is also not the problem, I have a new one installed and have tried different cables as well as different ports from my router. I have a feeling this is a setting wrong or software problem. I have included all my specs below, would be great if someone would be able to help! Before vs after re-plugging the cable If there is more information you need, I am happy to provide it, just would really like to try and sort this out! ethernet Looking for Powerline Ethernet (or similar) Recommendations
NCSGeek posted a topic in Networking
Hello. I'm looking into a powerline ethernet adapter because the ethernet in my wall only has 1 of 4 of the cables functional and I need a second ethernet line for a LAN server. (somehow they broke most of them during installation) Does anyone have any good recommendations? I mean, I've done my own research and found two fairly nice ones on amazon that fit my speed requirement (1, 2) but I've read that it's bad to plug these into surge protectors/suppressors so I was hoping to find one that has that kind of safety built-in. (if that's a product that exists) So basically I'm looking for some recommendations on a well-built solution with protections in-built. I'm also open to suggestions for non-powerline solutions if you think there is a better way to do this. As long as it doesnt involve something bulky, or something that splits my one ethernet line into more, then I'd probably consider it. Thanks! -
Hi, im having problems with my ethernet connection. Every like 20s it randomly drops and lags any game etc. I did switched from a Intel to a AMD motherboard and CPU while back. And im still using Intel Ethernet Controller (3) I225-V. I have tried multiple ethernet cables and did a network reset aswell. Any suggestions?

Okay, so I need some help. I've tried so many things and at this point I need to make a post for help. I'm down to try everything I've already done before in the off chance it works now or I did it wrong the first time. The Issue: When I run a speed test on my desktop pc I get about 400/500 down and 100 up. I'm paying for gigabit and expect to see at least 800 (which if I recall correctly, was what I was getting when I first built my machine). When I run the speed test using my old laptop through the same ethernet cable, I get around 700/800 down and around 300/400 up. On top of that and the main cause for me trying to fix this is my ping spikes, especially in online games. Randomly (about once a match in Overwatch so every 20 minutes), I get a massive ping spike where my in-game latency goes from around 30-40ms to 600ms+ for a brief moment and then back down to 30-40ms. Hardware: My pc is a self built desktop running Windows 11. GPU: RTX 4090, CPU: i9-13900k, Motherboard: Rog Strix Z790-e gaming wifi. My internet setup is ethernet with wifi disabled (pc) to a Netgear network switch. From there it goes to a Unifi AP in my room, then it goes down to the basement into another Netgear switch. From that switch it goes into the Unifi USG, finally chaining to a Verizon router which links to the modem and then out to the street. I have managed to narrow things down somewhat. I have tested all the cables with a cable tester down to the network switch in the basement. I have also determined that the ping spike issue is somewhere local. As I have a cmd window up pinging my router and whenever I get a ping spike in game, the time in the cmd window goes from <1ms to 40/50ms+ I'm at a pretty big loss on what to do / try next. Maybe something is wrong with my computer? Maybe something is wrong with the network setup but I'm not sure how to diagnose if it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'd be happy to follow up with any further details if needed.

Hello Everyone, I hope you've come across a solution to this perplexing issue. Allow me to share my recent experience with the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard, which has been a source of constant frustration and has consumed countless hours of troubleshooting. To begin with, I updated the BIOS to the most recent one for my motherboard from MSI website, when I initially set up the motherboard, I encountered a major hurdle—no drivers were installed. As a result, various components like network adapters, audio, Bluetooth, and others appeared as 'Other devices' in the Device Manager. Connecting to the internet was impossible, forcing me to install the Windows operating system in limited mode. Eventually, I managed to utilize a second PC to download the necessary network drivers from the MSI website. I can't help but wonder if this level of difficulty is normal, as I don't recall encountering such challenges when I built my last system over five years ago. At present, I've managed to get the WiFi working, making the PC usable. However, I haven't been as fortunate with the Ethernet connection. Despite my best efforts, which included manually installing the latest drivers from MSI's website or Intel's, utilizing MSI Center's auto driver installation, and even trying Intel's driver support assistant, I've been unable to establish a functional Ethernet connection. What's interesting is that the latest LAN drivers for my Windows 10 operating system appear to install correctly. In the Device Manager, the Ethernet adapter is listed as 'intel(R) Ethernet Controller i226-V' under 'Network Adapters,' without any yellow exclamation marks or signs of an unidentified device. I've also attempted disabling the device and deleting the drivers to reinstall the latest versions each time I've attempted to troubleshoot. Every other driver that has been installed seems to be functioning as normal, Wifi, audio etc... Unfortunately, Ethernet connectivity continues to elude me. I'm confident that the cable is not the issue, as it is a standard CAT 6 cable that came with my router and functions when connected to my old PC. Additionally, the Ethernet port on the new MSI motherboard does show signs of activity, with the port lights flickering in amber and green during boot-up. Considering this, I find it unlikely that there is a faulty port or motherboard that somehow passed quality control. I believe there must be a simple solution that I have yet to discover. Perhaps I unintentionally unchecked a setting in the BIOS that disables Ethernet connectivity (although I don't believe I have), or maybe it's a minor problem with the router. I appreciate any insights or guidance you can provide in resolving this matter. Thank you

I have a laptop that does not have an Ethernet input, but I have a stationary computer, can I connect the laptop to the computer via USB and thus have Internet access via a cable?

I'm looking to buy all new Ethernet cables and properly do the networking for my house now that I've got Fiber internet and a new Wi-FI 7 router with a Wi-Fi 6E mesh system coming in. I just bought a Cat7 Ethernet cable and then was reading that it's not an official standard or ethernet cable but still need more cables and was wondering if I should get more Cat7 or use a Cat6A or Cat8 cable since those are official ethernet cables (according to what I've read). I don't want to go below Cat6A because of future proofing and I transfer files between devices over my local network plus my Fiber ISP currently supports speeds up to 5Gig which I only have 1Gig right now I'm looking to upgrade to 2Gig. Thx for any info!
