  1. Morning all, there's a used Samsung PM1725B locally, trouble is the card is designed for PCIE x8 and my motherboard (gigabyte b550 ud ac) has open slots that are physically x16 but wired for x4 or x1, what issues will occur running this card in those slots? Also ive heard tell that any cards will run in a slot with fewer lanes than what a card is wired for as long as there is not a physical limit but i couldnt find a solid source on this.
  2. So I was scouring eBay for some graphics cards when I came across an AMD v340 engineering sample for like 1500 bucks. What was super cool about this card is that it supported GPU virtualization. Unfortunately its way underpowered for what I need so I looked to see if Nvidia had anything available to pros or enterprise and I found the A6000 that supported their vGPU tech. They claim that with aggregation, the performance increase is close to linear, but I'm not sure if that would apply to something like a game engine that uses gaming drivers. The goal here is to have a dynamic server that can allocate GPU resources on the fly for several tasks, including a kick-ass gaming rig with that aggregated gpu. In principle if it scaled the way that I hope, It would make a single virtualized GPU that is 2x more powerful than a 3090 (the A6000 is like 10% faster I'm pretty sure). Why do I need such power for games? I work in the VR industry and I've been wanting to work with an ultra high fidelity VR game to demo a piece of hardware. Does anyone have experience with vGPUs or testing this kind of aggregation?
  3. Hey, so I have this project at uni - I have to design (theoretically) a digital system for submitting, tracking, storing and analyzing data about a lot of electrical and mechanical machines in a given industry (say the railroad one in my country). Since they log all info on paper, my job is to design a digital system for that. So apart from databases, a client of some sort and all that, I have to look into enterprise servers. Enterprise networking is mandatory imo as well, however that isn't on focus. Anyone in the industry able to give some information about respected vendors and what not? I know HPE is used a lot for this, but I don't know much about enterprise specific stuff. Considering the workload, the server should be more storage based (since we don't have much for the cpus to do let alone the gpus...). I guess a decentralized solution would be best if budget allows it, but even if we stick to a single server rack, what should I aim for? Also not sure on the optimal topology to deploy this system in all together. Since it's for a national institution, it has to be pretty legit, although quite cheap considering we're talking about the Balkans haha. I can and will do my research in the web, I'm just curious as to what you guys would be able to tell me on the subject of enterprise servers (ofc not the most expensive stuff, nor heavy compute oriented). Thanks in advance and cheers!
  4. Hello, I wish to create an automatically updating flowchart from my folders. There is a lot of them so I wish to avoid having to manually enter them into MS visio or something. I wish to do this so that I could better document and navigate my folders, files and what is in them. If it matters, they are on a network drive btw. Is there any software that would allow me to do this?
  5. Long story short… bought a server off Craigslist. Whatever, 700$, 2x Xeons, 384g of ram. Something. Quite a score right? well the thing is loud. I get it, passive heatsinks. Duh, it’s a server Let’s watercool the CPUs! Done. Now it’s confused. Pump is DC/molex - straight full power, yet at 37c all 10 fans go super fast then idle and back again There aren’t any fan curve options in the BIOS let alone a Cpu header, I just see fan0-6. Tore apart the manual too, watchdog and stuffs TLDR; got a server, fans are always super loud. So STFU, watercool it. Now it’s 100% to 20% and back to 100. Annoying. help? (Yellow duck as a life raft) ~ughh
  6. hey everyone! currently for my house, i am running a network stack from unifi, (Pro-4 Gateway -> XG Ag switch -> 16 port POE, 24 Port Gigabit) and i was wondering if there was a cable that exists where it is a DAC cable, but SFP/SFP + on one end, to standard RJ45 on the other. and it it could be bidirectional that would be amazing, or if not i could make it work too.
  7. So this is a question that I haven’t been able to find an answer for. Will enterprise grade networking hardware work in a windows environment? For example, could someone purchase something like supermirco’s AOC-S25G-m2S network card https://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-S25G-m2S.cfm and drop it in a desktop pc, purchase a second one for another PC and get the transfer speeds that are advertised? Would window even detect it? Would it know what to do with it? Could you in theory get a pair of banana’s 100gbit networking cards and connect 2 desktop PC’s with them at full speeds? This is purely a would it work question, please don’t reply with “no one would ever need it” or “it’s not worth it / feasible” Thanks in advance

While SSD prices have been slowly decreasing and capacities increasing over the last few years, ever since a year or two ago performance for the average user has come to a standstill. Boot up and app launch times have barely improved at all over the last year or two, but 3D XPoint could be here to change that. The original reason why SSDs were so much faster than HDDs was random read and writes and latency, and 3D XPoint seems to have significantly lower latency than NAND based SSDs as well as having somewhat higher random reads and writes. While it's nothing close to the "1000x faster" that Intel was advertising 3D XPoint flash to be compared to NAND, it still seems like it'll be a significant increase that we should be looking forward to. Hopefully regular consumer based 3D XPoint products get released soon as I really want to see if they can make any difference to performance for the average user.
  9. Hi, I have a problem wiht my Windows 10 Enterprise pc, ( Dont ask why it is enterprise ) I heard from a friend that is is posible to install a form of "Desktop experience" so i can use the normal funcions on my computer. Can anyone here help me? Thanks anyway! Robin
  10. Hi guys. Do you have any idea on how can I manage the speed of different computers connected to my network using a dedicated server computer running on Windows Server 2012 r2 ?
  11. So, I got a laptop for free. But it has windows 7 enterprise on it, so I can't use the assistive technology free upgrade path. Is it possible to rid the os of the enterprise license so it just has a standard license?
  12. Hello! First post here - I am currently running a small home server alongside a desktop PC. The PC uses an SSD as its main OS drive, but one of the hard drives I use in it as storage has just failed. That's fine, because all the files were backed up to the server, but now I need to replace it and I'm looking to upgrade the server at the same time. I want longevity over speed, ideally! I found a pair of 2TB WD2000FYYZ drives for £55 each - I know they would be fine in the server, but would they be acceptable for use in a PC which gets turned on/off once a day? I also know that they use a shorter-length TLER than desktop drives; is this an issue? (I've considered WD Reds, Greens, Blacks and Blues as well, but these REs seem to be the best value). Thanks!
  13. My company is looking for an of sight place to store our video and editing data. in the last 2 years we've amassed around 25TBs of content but as we expand our workload I would expect this to grow faster. What would LTT or the Ltt community recommend for a terabyte scaled off-sight cloud backup? I know Amazon could be an option but there are so many offerings I wanted to do some research first. Chears, GK
  14. Ok so previous post: But now i have narrowed the problem down to the fact that Windows clients only connect if I set both SS CA Certificate and SSL Server Certificate as auto. However, my phone and my Ubuntu machine connect just fine, just a prompt for trusting the certificate. I have tried installing the both the CA Cert under Trusted Root Certification Authorities and the Server Cert in Personal, but that still dont work on the windows machine. Set to auto, however, Windows just prompts me the check the certs, and works perfectly. I would wish to use my own certs, however, and i would like to know why only Windows clients dont work, while my phone and Ubuntu both do.
  15. Another phone from Samsung, this one is the Note 8 Enterprise Edition. Specs is the same as the standard Note 8, but with added security features and it's also unlocked. Price is at $994USD https://news.samsung.com/us/galaxy-note8-enterprise-edition/
  16. I am starting to look into getting a used rack mount enterprise grade server. I am new to this realm of hardware and I am not sure what servers would be good choices or not. I plane to use it for VMs and a Plex server. I want it to have many cores (12 or more) and support for about 64GB of DDR3 RAM. I need to have room for drive expansion beyond the few multi TB drives I have. Non-proprietary connectors and psus would be ideal. I would appreciate any recommendations of what servers to look at or even building my own rack mount system.

  18. If you are a pirate or just someone with a windows license key or needing isos for Virtual Machines, it becomes frustrating if you lose your iso. Now Microsoft does not let you download the iso, and most PCs have the key in their bios. I have a solution. These are all the original isos for windows (EN) every version and every subversion. I will not be giving out product keys but these are the original isos from Microsoft, I will link you to the Microsoft iso hashes so you can verify if you do not trust me. I am happy to help you all and anyone who ever needs windows isos. I took a lot of time on this so I hope you found this helpful. 19. I have just received word from a source I cannot name that IBM is preparing for a 2017 power play AGAINST silicon giant Intel in the storage and networking spaces. In its competition against the likes of EMC, NetApp, Nimble, and Pure... IBM will be SHEDDING the high cost of integrated Intel-based processors and controllers in favor of smartphone insustry giant Qualcomm offerings. I tis no secret that All-flash and Adaptive Flash storage arrays are the new standard in enterprise market and this momentum surely fuels the decision by big blue to get as much pargin in this paradigm shift as possible before CACHE storage becomes the new standard sometime in 2018. This has HUGE implication, as AMD also stands to wrench away a good chunck of the consumer market with their RYZEN (formerly Zen) product line in the next quarter. Thoughts? Concerns?
  20. I read several reports from 2015 to early 2016 about the danger of using a windows 10 enterprise key to upgrade a windows 10 pro os to enterprise but the reports suddenly stopped. Is it still dangerous to use this technique and change the key on windows 10 to an enterprise one to upgrade it?
  21. Back in 2014, HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) were working on a never before seen type of computer, called The Machine, where it uses memristors, huge amounts of ram, and silicon photonics. As time went on, reality started to set in, by using never before use technology, bring the entire project out to market, was proven to be impossible. But the folks at HPE aren't giving up that easily and last week, the have revealed a working prototype. The Machine features technology such as The X1 module But the true intentions of The Machine, isn't just about fast moving data at long distances. It's goal was to use NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) a replacement to DRAM, where it consumers less power and low latency optical interconnects. HPE's vision of The Machine, was to use vast amounts of NVM memory, accessible across many SoCs. It's also possible it might work together with current accelerators, like those from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD. While HPE's The Machine, probably won't be out of prototype stage anytime soon, but what's they've learned and designed with The Machine, might be implemented into their future systems. HPE's The Machine, also known as "Memory Driven Computing" https://www.extremetech.com/computing/240248-hp-demonstrates-next-generation-computing-prototype-machine-comes-together
  22. I've got two old HP DL165 G7 servers that I've been using for lab environments at work along with folding and some other random things. I'm trying to install Server 2012 R2 now and when it gets to the Windows Installation screen the server just blue screens and restarts. If I dissolve the RAID and run 1 drive in AHCI the computer doesn't blue screen. The server was running Server 2016 and running folding jobs before this.... Maybe folding fried a CPU??? I watched temps and they never got above 50°C so I don't think thats the issue. Any ideas? The server restarts too quick to see what the error code on the blue screen is. Thanks in advance
  23. Just Wanting to talk about Hyper-V Virtualization on Enterprise hardware. Things like old Dell Poweredge R610's running windows 10 with Hyper-V? Dell R620 Overkill for virtualization for a startup? Differences between Hyper-V as an operating system and\or running as an application. Feature differences between Hyper-V on Windows Server and on Windows Pro installations.
  24. Hi, Im trying to access the web interface of a AP from 3com model AP9152 but the browser returns error do access. I can ping the ip and log in via telnet. I ran a port scan and turns out that only port 23 is open. Is there a way i can open a port to access the web interface? thanks
  25. The Open Compute project, The project from the major tech companies to cooperate on server hardware development, has started working on scalable liquid cooling for servers. There are multiple engineering groups working on the parts for liquid cooling and immersion as can be seen in the opencompute project youtube channel There is a nice video summery of the effort in the video OCPSummit19 - EW: Advanced Cooling - Eco-system Enabling of Liquid Cooling Ingredients Maybe Intel or other vendors will allow linus to take a look at what is being done. considering the scale of production it would probably trickle down to consumer hardware sooner or later.
