This year I am planning to build a desktop platform with a Xeon E5-2670 v1 processor that I recently bought. It is difficult to find good realistic single processor benchmarks of this platform. I'm not interested in the latest hardware. I'm considering buying a GPU close to the processor's year of manufacture and maybe even a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080. I understand that newer Xeon motherboards support standard DDR3 RAM. How can I know which RAM is for server and which is not? What other aspects should I take into account when assembling this platform? -
Hi, I have a Dell Precision T3600 with a Xeon E5-1603 (V1), and I tried to upgrade to the E5-1620 V2 which has the same socket but it is the next generation up, so it did not work. I upgraded my bios to the latest (Dell A15) but it still does not work. I read the following: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/20009621 I checked T3600 and 3610 - the only difference is BIOS firmware, even BIOS chips are the same. T3600 has Intel ME firmware 7th version - that is why Xeon v2 are not recognized by the 3600 system, they need later 8th version of ME. Upgrade of ME formware is a difficult procedure - You need to fit the size and other attributes of old ME region. The simpliest way would be to read both BIOS chips from 3610 motherboard and clean data region in ME but I don't have any T3610 systems. Another way is to analyze BIOS file for T3610 and drag out the firmware for T3600. If anybody has T3610 - please reply which suggests that it is possible to upgrade the ME, but I have no idea how to do this or where to get the necessary update data. Could somebody help please? Also, if this does not work, I'm considering buying a T3610 motherboard for $99 but I'm not sure if it would fit in the chassis of the T3600 - they seem identical but I can't be sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I curently have my WORKSTATION BUILD (mainly 3D and motion graphics but a lot of gaming too:)) with this configuration: Asus Z10PE-D8 WS Intel Xeon E5 2620v3, Rev 2.0, 85W TDP Crucial DDR4 ECC 2x 16GB 2133 Mhz EVGA GTX 1080 FTW DT, EVGA GTX 980 sc EVGA Supernova 750 G2 Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 1TB WD Blue, 1TB WD Green in PHANTEKS Enthoo Pro I allready ordered Intel Xeon E5 2620v3 ES, QFSE, 105W TDP from eBay without any research on this topic. ( Generally my question is will my Z10 mobo recognize the new ES (early sample) CPU? Will it work with my current retail version CPU E5 2620v3 in this dual CPU mobo? What problems could i ran into? If it will be recognized will QPI work properly? I am aware I made noob mistake not making my research first so no need to roast me. But I got so excited to finally after 3 years make my WS complete. I will be glad for any valible intel or any opinion on this. THX for any response. -
Can I overclock my Xeon? (its a retail cpu, not es and I know you "can't" overclock xeons) I just want to know if it has a locked voltage or what. My motherboard is a ASRock X99 Extreme3. Thanks

Alright so Im trying to plan a "budget build" in the sense that I am looking to buy used xeons to save some money. The total budget is around $6,000-8,000 USD and my original plan was to use 2 2-CPU E5 server boards, but after seeing the holy sh!t episode with the 4CPU build, I wanted to consider using a single E7 board with quad sockets. Im having a hard time finding a lot of information on the advantages/disadvantages of E7, and all Ive learned so far is that they are usually used for banking or large volumes of data. Ive seen that used E7's also seem to go for 40% cheaper than comparable used E5 xeons despite the E7 being nearly 2x as expensive when new. I also saw that one server/workstation company (Titan PC's I think it was) builds an 4 CPU E7 rig that they claim is good for 3D rendering, but I dont know how dependable that information is. Im completely new to the idea of a server build and have just been trying to learn what I can over the last few months, so I might be missing something "obvious" when it comes to E5's vs E7's. but Im basically asking if they would make a good 3D render farm since they do seem to sell for cheaper than the E5's when buying used. Renderer's I use: Vray for Maya, Renderman for Maya, Keyshot. All multi-core multi-CPU capable.

So, I bought this Xeon E5 2650 v4 from Amazon (sold & shipped). The only SKU for it that turns up on Google has 2011-v3 socket type associated with it, which is the kind of server board I have for my application. Here's the issue, the processor that I got sent has the right etchings on it, but it's NOT 2011-v3 as can be seen in the attached picture. The sticker at the bottom of the cpu box says "LGA2011V4" on it. The question is, what sorcery is this? And what's LGA2011V4? Thanks.

Hi I'm looking to build a home server and need some help selecting a CPU for the following uses: File sharing/NAS (smb,afp,ftp,webdav), planning 4x2tb in raid 5 (software raid) HTPC in virtual machine with GPU passthrough Apache with server monitoring software and online calendar Small home email server mumble server small game servers from time to time. tv tuner card to turn dvb-t into iptv and also remote tv recording. ideally enough computing power left over to run the odd extra test vm from time to time. features added in future Use as NVR using zoneminder no more than 8 cameras. My budget is ideally £700-£1000 (~$894-$1276) First question is xeon worth it for my usages (ecc, virtualisation)? Second question (assuming yes to 1.) Am i better off going for something like a brand new e3-1220v5 or an old e5 for the higher core count? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've struggled to understanding how to compare xeons (and CPU's in general tbh), any advice on where to learn is also appreciated.

Is it worth investing in an older Xeon build such as this? Found one with dual Xeon E5-2609 v2s, 16gb ram and an nvs 315 with the other usual thinkstation psu etc, worth £220/382CAD/295 USD? Usage depends on what it’s capable of really, it’s for my missus to use/learn with; opinions, suggestions etc? thanks in advance

Hey, yesterday one of my two identical computers froze. I shut it down and upon rebooting, I had an alert at POST telling me the CPU (Xeon E5-2697v4) was overheating. 1st step, checking cooler: done, dead pump (Enermax Liqmax 240). I replaced it, reapplied thermal paste... Airflow is more than enough I think, in a Cooler Master MasterCase. Next thing I know, I'm in the BIOS of both computers, the good one running around 35-40°C while the other stabilizes at 60°C. At this point I'm open to any suggestion (everything is still under warranty, but if I can avoid anymore downtime...) Asus X99-E WS Xeon E5-2697v4 (under an Enermax Liqmax 240, should be more than enough?) 8x8GB Corsair LPX 2400MHz inno3D 1080ti powered by a Corsair RM650X (and it should probably be in the workbench section now that I think about it..sorry..)

Hi! The things goes like this, I have a Xeon E5-2630V3, been using it for a year now, no complains at all, the problem started when i ran some benchmarks, the processor is supposed to have 2.4Ghz in stock and reach 3.2 Ghz in turbo, but in load it only reaches 2.6Ghz, i already tried moving in BIOS the voltage and adjusing each core multiplier to 32, but no luck, for some reason by doing that, the procesor's voltage goes down and the speed goes to 1.9Ghz. Maybe my question is too naive, but i couln't find answers anywhere else MoBo: MSI x99 SLI Plus I hope someone can help me, thanks!

So ive been trying to find out what server my motherboard belongs too. Im trying to turn it into a content machine. So i bought this back in the beginning of 2016, i brought 2 X5550 CPUs to put into it. The X5550s did not fit, it was not LGA 1366, But LGA 1356 (I THINK). The ebay lister says it was lga 1366 but obviously that cant be true. So ive stumbled back to this projects. Please help out, this is what i know so far.... The processors supported are from E5-2400 series, LGA 1356 compatible, its a blade style server, could be from another company, and not dell possibly (not sure) Its not the "PowerEdge C6220 II" (Maybe it was its predecessor?) So I'm wanting to build a workstation PC. Originally I was set to save up for (note that I don't have the money for this now) a brand new X99 system, likely using a 6950x, X99 Deluxe II, 128gb RAM etc etc... Monitors included it was looking like it was going to cost about $5-6k. I was fine with this though, sure it'd take a while to save up for, but it would be an absolute workhorse, relatively power efficient and the graphics in there would be perfect for some downtime gaming too - this will be my only system as I work from home and can't be bothered dealing with multiple computers. I've since seen a couple of videos and articles talking about the old E5-2670 CPUs, that can be had on ebay for around $80 each. This could give me the potential (using ebay) to have a 16 core workstation with 128GB RAM for a lot less. In fact, I think the only new parts I would want to buy would be a GPU (GTX 1080), PSU (something very power efficient like EVGA P2 or T2 series, depending on total watts) and CPU coolers (likely the Noctua NH-U12-DX-i4, because they're tried and tested server coolers). I was all set on this new (but old) config, until I saw a couple of videos on youtube, where people really hated these chips due to their performance in Premiere. Now, I wouldn't actually be using Premiere as I don't do video editing. My work is in audio and photography, so I'm using apps like Pro Tools along with multiple virtual instruments (requiring a high amount of RAM), 3rd party USB audio etc, and then Lightroom and Photoshop for my photography. I basically want to know if I'm going to be disappointed buying this older setup, or should I keep saving for something much newer? Has anyone had any experience with using older server gear? Can anyone explain the bad performance in Premiere - is it just badly written for handling excessive multiple cores/CPUs? Any insight is much appreciated, thanks!

so i'm currently in the middle of building a single xeon workstation using the xeon e5 2670 and i have some ddr3 ecc ram lying around that i was going to use but after looking around i can't find out whether the ram will work. if i use a desktop x79 motherboard that states it supports non-ecc ram will the ram i have still work because of the xeon or will i have to buy a server motherboard to get the system to post? or does anyone know what motherboards i should be looking for? i'm hoping to get an atx or e-atx sized motherboard to fit in a standard case with one cpu socket and between 4 and 8 memory slots. does anyone have any recommendations?

I have seen a lot of people on YouTube build a dual Xeon E5-2670 build using the asrock EP2C602 board. This is a ddr3 compatible, no usb 3.0 and older chipset. I found the EP2C612 is an updated version using ddr4, usb3.0 and many updated parts! I'm just making sure before I buy this can anyone see a problem with me buying the ASRock EP2C612D8 SSI ATX Server Motherboard Dual Socket LGA 2011 R3 , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=13-157-558R, along with two E5-2670's and some DDR4? Hello, I am trying to find the parts to make a dual Intel E5-2670 workstation for video editing, 3D animation, CAD, and audio editing. I have the following questions: Will the Intel S4600LTM server motherboard work well with this setup and be able to use ECC? What power supply will I need? Is this build good for rendering and video editing? Will this setup work together with a Quadro? What kind of tower will I need to get with this mobo? Thank you for your help!

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my current system with a Xeon E5-2670, they're dirt cheap on eBay I found some as low as 50 USD, however, the motherboards are usually quite expensive. I live in Sweden and I found a classified with someone selling an ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard for 40 USD, but when I checked the ASUS site it said that it only supports the Xeon E5-26XX v2 processors. My question is should I buy it?, the socket is the same and the chipset is supported by the E5-2670.I have heard that people often install Xeon processors in X-79 boards which do not officially support them. P.S Please feel free to add any eBay links with cheap lga 2011 motherboards Thanks in advance for the help

SRx8 vs 2Rx8 vs 4Rx8 ????????? What i have gathered. Always x8 never x4. 2R offers performance increase around 10-20% compared to SR. I3,I5,I7 and Xeon's Xeon's unlike many other processors can offer more performance increases with 4R as long as your config is Single DPC AND at most 32GB per channel. (depending on the MB clock wont drop to 800MHZ) Any Changes thoughts and Feedback appreciated. NEEEDD more facts!! -
Hi all, I received my mobo, RAM and CPU days ago, and the thing won't post, even without any PCIe devices (but a GPU, I cross checked the GPU with my other one, none of them can boot this computer). The CPU is an eBay E5 2696 v3, $1400. The mobo is an AsRock X99 ITX ac. I am pretty sure the RAM is not the problem since I tried with LRDIMM 32G*2, RDIMM 32G*2 and UDIMM 8G*8. Even the shittiest compatibility board should at least boot with 8G UDIMM RAM. Without RAM installed, I get 3 beeps. With RAM installed, the buzzer makes a short and faint "da" every second, and the fan's PWM fluctuates every second, so it looks like the system reboots every second. Since I need the PC BADLY, I will use the most expensive overnight shipping, so I need to know which part to return for my best bet. No local PC shops can even diagnose my build since neither my local Intrex and BestBuy regional center carry any X99 mobo or LGA2011-3 CPU. Advise needed! Thanks

so here is a fun question and all advice is appreciated, I am upgrading my main gaming rig and I am going for something a little different. I have an asus rampage iv black edition running a xeon e5 2620 @ 2.6 Ghz, now the weird thing is my cpu shouldn't be able to go past 2 Ghz other then with turbo mode to 2.5 Ghz or overclocking the bclk, but one day I tried the asus AI suite and the one-click overclock feature and noticed that my cores were all running at 2.6 Ghz instead of just one or two cores. so I got to thinking, if the Rampage could do that to a slow 6 core, what would it do to an 8 core xeon. anyway, I bought an E5 2690 8 core @ 2.9 Ghz with a turbo of 3.8 Ghz. do you think the rampage would set it to its max turbo on all 8 cores if the cooling was good enough?

I have a motherboard that will not turn on but i do not know what is wrong with it. I have a Gigabyte x79-up4 lga 2011 motherboard that i bought new and a friend gave me an intel Xeon e5 2620, on gigabyte's website it says that the motherboard does support this xeon cpu to the point with the loaded bios F4 and the board has that bios revision. although when i plug it up, it powers on for a split second and turns off again. i think it is something to do with the cpu not being supported by the current bios but i am not exactly sure. any help would be great, thx Exact spec below: Gigabyte X79-up4 rev:1.1 Intel xeon E5 2620 Corsair vengeance 2x4gb 1600 Evga GTX 480 750w corsair power supply
