I wanted to create this post regarding my thoughts on Dolby Atmos and what I think of virtual surround in general from a hearing perspective and something that isn't technically measured. This is used with the Sound Blaster AE-9 and the Tygr 300Rs. I decided to try Dolby Atmos with the 7-day free trial and see how good or bad it is. Spoilers I will rarely use virtual surround I didn't go into high hopes when trying out this virtual surround sound because I wanted my expectations low. That certainly didn't help because I just wanted to throw off my headphones in the first seconds of trying it out for either a game or music. Their virtual surround implementation is alright for a kind of fake "spacious" bathroomy type sound but the sound quality dropped harder than I don't know what. The sound got very grainy and had a lot of weird EQ going on which ruined the whole frequency response. Using their EQ didn't help with the sound either. As for directionality, it works surprisingly well to distinguish front and behind imaging in for example Battlefield and letting it downmix to stereo from using surround in the game. Mediocre for directional audio for footsteps and of course worse than without it. Then I decided to compare DTS Headphone:X that came preloaded with my ROG Strix mobo and see if there was a difference. And yep, big difference. DTS seems to have less distortion and more clarity without all the graininess that Atmos comes with, but some weird things are going on here which are that for some reason DTS shifts the image to the left by like 3-5 volume adjustments in windows, and sounds like a channel imbalance. My headphones do not have a channel imbalance because turning it off fixes it. This makes it pretty much unusable. The other con is that the bass is boomy and the sound seems more pushed forward losing some detail. I am guessing it's like that because of the way they try to make a spacious soundstage with a "subwoofer" which doesn't sound good although the echo isn't there as much as Dolby Atmos surround. It has pretty good front and back imaging as well as Atmos but it's a lot better in terms of quality. Not that good directional audio either hence the boomy bass and weird imaging. So as for my last "test" is that I compared both of them to my soundcard's virtual surround from the SBX settings and using the different percentages on the "surround" setting. This is closer to Dolby Atmos with almost zero to no sound quality compromise. Although it increases treble as well as a bit of echo. Having it between 1-33% gives a type of sound almost like I have 2 speakers in front of me with a tiny bit of echo, between 33-67% is just the same but a bit wider sounding and kind of blending the channels. Up to 100%, it sounds almost the same but at 100% it somehow surprisingly makes the sound like it's both in front and behind me as if I am in a bigger warehouse or something, I'm guessing it has to do a bit with the echo and other effects it's applying. The echo is surprisingly low and not at all bathroomy as the others I've tried. This one retains good imaging/directional audio but has a small bit worse front and behind imaging than DTS or Dolby. The only times I've had it to be more of a fun use case it kinda works for movies, casual games, an orchestral track or just to get immersed but not for quality or better directional audio. Dolby - Grainy sound, bathroomy, hollow. DTS - Channel imbalance (software related), boomy bass, detail loss. SBX surround - Great sound quality, decent frequency response, same if not more detail To sum it up don't use it if you need sound quality and proper stereo imaging and to rely on the game's sound engine. As for immersion or to have a different sound for casual games, movies, or just some orchestral track, sure. But Dolby Atmos isn't it anyway. I guess the built-in virtual surround in my soundcard works better since it has its hardware and processing for it and it doesn't sound half bad.

I have support for both DTS:X Ultra and DTS Headphone:X on my laptop but I have no idea which does exactly what. I am curious which one is more optimal for gaming (FPS games mostly) and for music or it is all more or less same together with Windows Sonic for Headphones. Known facts: both have an option to choose specific model of device (headphones, speakers,...) DTS:X Ultra has more features and options within dedicated app (only obtainable via link in myAsus that opens Microsoft Store) DTS Headphone:X is configured via DTS Sound Unbound but besides choosing specific device the only option is Spatial mode: Balanced or Spacious There is slight difference in depth of sound when switching between them - DTS Headphone:X sounds more deeper and bassier I found a video on Techquickie channel "What are Dolby Atmos and DTS:X?" from 3 years ago but even though it explains the technology doesn't answer the question - What is difference between DTS:X and DTS Headphone:X and which one is better for headphone use? Any explanation and advice is very welcomed.

Hi, have been looking for replacement surround headphones to my philips abc hd1505u. They are by far the best sounding 5.1 headphones I’ve ever tried. Bought SteelSeries pro wireless but they didn’t do it for me. I’m looking at used Sony mdr 700hw now but don’t know how they are for gaming? Please help!

Hello, I noticed that my dads setup isn't capable of Dolby 5.1, but just L/R spread to 5.1... Connected devices that he wants to be 5.1 are: PS4 (PS5 in future) which has DIGITAL/OPTICAL (and maybe HDMI Dolby is possible too) Raspberry Pi 4 (has only HDMI...maybe there is some HAT add-on, but that's another spending) Set-top box/TV channels (not that important, but it would be cool - has HDMI and DIGITAL/OPTICAL OUT) I wanted to upgrade to other receiver as he doesn't want to swap speakers, because (and I quote) "they are just fine for me". But those speakers are 3 ohms and I couldn't find any receivers that support 3 ohm speaker sets. So I figured out that "new" (can be used) receiver and speakers are inevitable. But big ooof. Every listing for receiver I found and doublechecked it's manual...it turns out that they support audio over HDMI, but not how I want it. They take the audio signal and pass it to HDMI OUT (to the TV). Last affordable receiver I found is Sony STR-DG520 and it says this: So DIGITAL OUT from TV back to the receiver? It's messy, but okay...I will get my 5.1 aud~ ooooh nooo! Dad's TV outputs only 2.0 via OPTICAL...well, if I understand it correctly: Do I understand this correctly and this receiver won't have 5.1 audio that would be outputted from Raspberry over HDMI to receiver, which would pass it to TV? It would pass even the audio to TV and not to connected speakers...and if I connected DIGITAL OUT from TV to receiver, it would only send 2.0 channel audio? I'm willing to go for any receiver (+speakers either separately or with it) for 400$, but it has to work with previously mentioned devices on our Samsung TV (PS50A457P1DXXH) and allow us to finally enjoy 5.1. Is there a way to make it work with some receiver or is it necessary to upgrade even the TV? HDMI ARC is the new hot thing if I'm correct... Thanks a lot!

This is my scnenario.. I have a gaming pc and a tv, both of which I want to hook up to a surround sound system. The pc is capable of up to 5 channels via its front rear and sub auxiliary ports and the tv has an optical digital (toslink) port . The tv is a Hisense 4K 65in Roku tv and the gaming pc also has spdif (capable of compressed 5.1. I want a way to hook BOTH devices up to an AV receiver and have uncompressed true Dolby surround where each speaker can play individually. I have heard hdmi is the only way for this but I have also heard arc only does up to 5.1 compressed. And my TV does not support e-arc. I have a few amps but if I need a special one to do this please give suggestions. My budget is 200 for an av receiver. Or if I need a new surround system budget is 2-300. Thanks ahead!!

So I am kinda experimenting with my audio setup and I want more out of my 2.1 Speaker setup. Will DTS driver help me or the default Nvidia drivers will be sufficient?

(sorry if my English are false) So I have a desktop with a Realtek driver on it. The reason I kept using it because I can fake the 7.1 output for CS:GO (i just plug in my headset on my front panel and it works). Recently I found out that I can install a third-party driver (in this case is DTS sound) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sr7_0qMXk8) and this driver is perfect for my music experience, but not gaming. So is there any way that I can create another audio output to install DTS driver on, while still keep the old Realtek driver so that I can change in anytime?

Hello techies I was wondering if it were possible to get a DTS 5.1 signal out from an HDMI cable. I use a pretty old audio receiver, and it only supports 5.1 audio through chinch or SPDIF optical. For my PC, PS4, PS3, and PS2 I can use an Optical SPDIF cable, and it works fine, however, my other consoles like my Switch and Wii u I have to use the lousy TV speakers. Additionally, I want to rearrange my apartment soon, and move my PC away from my TV, and use a Steam Link instead. So I was wondering if it is possible to extract an Optical 5.1 DTS signal from an HDMI cable. Best regards Aaron

**SOLVED IN ELEVENTH POST** Well more of a work around for Windows Movies & TV inability to play DTS. And I wanted to use that program because nothing else correctly sent the HDR metadata. Also, I know the screen grabs I posted will look different to everyone else, but it looks amazing on my end. Hello All, I have been struggling to find a player for 4k videos and after an exhaustive searching of the Googles and several codecs that don't do shite -- I have settled on simply using Windows Movies & TV. It actually does a great job playing back 4k content, however, I have recently discovered that it won't play all audio codecs. Specifically DTS. From what I gather it's a problem with licensing and I can't find a solution to that problem so I resorted to trying VLC to play the content. VLC has no problem with the audio side of things, but as many of you are aware it struggles with the video side of 4k content. And now I have learned it struggles with the HDR color range as well. Again, I have searched and searched to find a solution and have come up with nothing that works. So what I am asking you good people for is any solution to playing this content I have been excited to see. If you have a solution that works for Windows Movies & TV audio then that's great. If you can actually make VLC play 4k UHD videos then that is also great. If I need another player then I am fine with that also. I am gonna attach pictures of the color difference between Windows Movies & TV versus VLC. I won't bother describing the other struggles VLC has with 4k video. Thanks All.

Hi guys, I just bought a pair of Senheiser HD 598 SR and I also happen to have a bunch of album in FLAC quality. so far I've just plugged them into my Motherboard because why not (I mean the volume is High enough and I don't need to plug them to my Speaker pre-amp (found in the dumpster, that I use to spike the volume of a standalone speaker I also found in the dump years ago and it's just a Mono speaker used on old CRT Television..)https://i.imgur.com/TACd36B.jpg https://i.imgur.com/gkNBMCA.jpg but since I have a Maximus V Formula with the SupremeFX audiocard(chip?) on board I thought what the heck, let's give it a try! I attached the screen of the DTS UltraPC II screen, I enabled it and it just feels like it spiked up a bit the volume and tones (like the Loud setting on the equalizer so to speak) but I can't tell if it's actually improving music or not) https://i.imgur.com/IVSCcNp.png I mean, should I just left the Equalizer on disabled and enjoy the FLAC music as it comes or I'm supposed to turn on those auto features to get the best out of it? I'm not looking for perfection, those headphones sounds wayyy crispy than the current setup I'm used to as you can see. it's just that since I have this sound card I'm like: why not use it good at least?! so what are you guys suggestion? Just leave everything disabled and listen to normal music or tweak something on the control panel? (or if there's a better software to tweak them)

Howdy, I recently bought a custom 5.1.2 setup, bought about 30 blu-rays that I enjoyed and noticed something, some movies don't come with Atmos nor DTS:X, I know the list of movies that have them, I checked Dolby's website, for example: Gravity is supposed to have Atmos but for me it only has DTS:HD Master Audio. Atmos movies were made available to home theatres after what, 2015? I only have 3 movies that have Atmos, Mad Max: Fury Road, Warcraft and Suicide Squad. No movies with DTS:X for now. So my question is, is this a region thing? Some movie regions have it and others don't? I am in Europe, region B/2, I buy movies in my country and on Amazon UK. Thanks in advance and happy new year!

After finishing my first PC build and plugging in my headphones, I first found out how terrible the audio quality was. I already downloaded realtek drivers and drivers from my hardware components that had anything to do with audio. I also experimented settings in windows itself (turning options like audio enhancement or spatial sound on and off), but there was still a major difference compared to my old computer. I upgraded from a Windows 8.1 Toshiba laptop that had DTS sound with features like surround sound and boosted bass (the audio was great compared to this). The audio on my new pc still plays stereo (or mono, I’m not sure which it is, but each headphone cup plays the same thing) even after having spatial sound or the windows sonic thingy enabled. I went through the steps in using Hesuvi, but it still ended up playing as if the sound was coming from the center of the headphones. Any ideas?

so after years of service my headset broke and i decided to get a g933 and now im wondering what are the diffrence beetween dolby and dts on the surrond sound tab and what exacly they do and your personal opinion. i personally think dts sounds better with music but dobly has better surrond sound in terms of pinpointing enemies in videogames such as overwatch and csgo. and if i choose dts i get the choice beetween super stereo front and super stereo wide whats the diffrence? so in short: technical diffrence between dolby and dts? technical diffrence between super stereo front and super stereo wide? and your opinion on these?

To keep this short. I downloaded some m2ts movie files and want to play them back. Video works fine. Audio works fine for a minute or 2 and then the character voices phase out and you can barely hear them while the effects audio is still going full blast. The audio format is DTS-HD. I'm no audio expert but it says that it's DTS-HD 6.1 Audio. My question is, Can my hardware be the problem with these playback issues or is something else the problem. I'm using a pair of ATH-M50X plugged into the front port of my PC and the mobo is the MSI Z370-A Pro. Any help is appreciated.

So I just ordered the Logitech G933 last night. upgrading from the G430. I've always had a hard time picking the right headset, either too tight and painful, too loose and falls off too easily, or sound quality is poor. The g430 were great, but weren't very loud, and i often find myself having to boost my audio in VLC. Has anyone use the G933? whats you opinon on them, i got them on sale for 175$ so im hoping it will be worth it, as i can multi task with them, ie use them on PC and ps4 at the same. also the option to go wireless is also very nice, as its a choice, so im not stuck being tethered, which was getting to be an issue for me with the 430. it has inline volume on the cord, and is kinda heavy, so everytime i would move or stand up it would go flying. pretty sure i damaged it as it sounds off now when i adjust the volume with it. so id like to hear what your fav surround DTS cert headset is.

Hi Everyone, I was wondering if this should go to the Graphics card or Audio sections of the forums and eventually decided on the latter. I'm wondering if any of you know what graphic cards already support the new DTS:X format (if any at all). I know that I'll have a much better chance with a sound card, but I need the sound to transmit over HDMI with the movie. Any help will be greatly appreciated **Sorry in advance if I make some horrible grammar or spelling mistakes, English isn't my mother tongue, I'm from Israel**

5.1 Sound, but over S/PDIF. First of all my setup here. I use an old SONY STR-SL5 receiver. It only supports cinch, and optical. so HDMI is not an option. Soundcard wise I use an Asus Xobar DGX. It supports 5.1 sound, and has an Optical out. Now. In my research I found out, that S/PDIF doesn't support uncompressed 5.1 sound, but my PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 manage to push out an 5.1 signal over S/PDIF. My guess is, that they use DTS Surround Sound. I'd really like to be able to watch movies in 5.1 though, but when I connect my computer with it, I only get an 2.1 sound, with the SL, and SR speakers just playing the L and R channels. How can I get this to work with my receiver? Does anyone know? Can I just force Windows to use DTS, or Dolby Digital Live? I am at the end of my expertise. Thank You

Hi, I recently built an HTPC and installed a trial version of windvd pro 11. I'm playing hunchback of notre damn and my receiver can detect the DTS-HD MA track and I can hear the audio from it. However, within a few minutes, my receiver immediately cuts the audio for a second and displays "DIAL NORM +4" and this happens at random times. I've so far tried switching cables and inputs but that isn't working. I'm hoping this is related to my PC as I no longer have warranty on my receiver. I've also updated my receiver to the latest firmware and am still having this issue. Please help me ASAP as I want to watch a blu ray movie hopefully within the next few hours. Thank You, 4321Rocket

Hey there community! 1: It's a pity that we don't have a section for video- and audio editing on this board yet. Would be great if that was added some time. 2: I have a video in AVC and its audio in DTS (6 channel - 1.510 Kbps) format packed in a MKV package. I can put them in an M4V package so I can import the video into Premiere Pro. However, since Premiere Pro doesn't support DTS as an import source, I'd like to know from you guys whether you know of ways to do so. I have had a quick look at audio file types (AAC, AC3, DTS) and am stuck at how I am going to import the DTS without loosing any quality and/or channels. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hello LTT Community! Today I come to you guys with a giant issue that appeared out of no where. I have been happily using my setup like this for a good month before I started to get this issue. Any audio that is output is being picked up by my microphone input. Its not my headset. I can mute my microphone and unplug it outright and still get the same issue. Example: Were in a Skype call together. I talk to you with no problem. You reply to me however when I hear you start to talk. My microphone picks it up and pushes it to you. Then you can hear yourself talk. My Specs: http://pastebin.com/rrpNDShd(DTS drivers) I have tried multiple headsets. I have tried multiple speakers I have tried updating to different version of the audio drivers I have tried through "Speakers/Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC)" and Razer's Surround Audio Controller Pro The "Play what you hear" feature is off. Stereo mix is disabled Plugged into front and back audio I cant find out why this is happening. It randomly one day occurred and now it wont go away. Any help would be much appreciated Regards

Hi all, I have a desire in sharing and stream my files over my home network. So I did some research and found two options: NAS or setting up my own server machine. I honestly don't know the difference between the two as I am new to the networking stuff. All I want is the machine to do the following: Perform backups of my existing computers (both Windows and OS X). Store my media using a media server (preferably Plex media server, but I will consider other options). Allow users to stream video files with HD audio (meaning the video files should pass DTS HD and Dolby True HD so my receiver can decode it correctly). Also if you don't mind me asking, what hardware do you guys suggest I should get/look at to do these things? I hope I didn't start a war and/or cause a big problem to a lot of users. I would like to say thanks in advance to all of you and especially Linus Media Group as they helped me gain knowledge on commonly used computer terms and they helped me build my first overclocked gaming PC. I can't wait to view all the responses as this is my first post!

I have a samsung HTiB. I have an external HDD. One file has Dolby True HD audio track. Doesnt work. Another file has DTS HD Track, works perfectly. Using the samsungs inbuilt player aswell. Any suggestion why this is happening and also can I fix this?
