What makes Linus think DropBox can't view your files? DropBox has full access to the files you upload; it is NOT zero knowledge. All it takes is for them to make one dumb mistake and all of your private (not illegal) files are open to the public, like what happened in 2011.

Hey, I have a windows server and it is running Genius Visiom NVR as a Surveillance server, recording 24x7. I already have 2 3TB WB Purple drives which are currently being recorded to. With the software I'm using, to set a location for the recordings to be stored, they have to be stored in the main directory of the drive in a folder called "gvrec". e.g. If I was recording to the C drive I'd have to record to "C:\gvrec" or else it wouldn't work. I wanted to store the last 3-4 days of footage on a cloud storage service (preferably Dropbox). I want to do this as in the event that my server is destroyed during a home invasion, I will have a saved copy of the footage. (Will this method actually achieve this? As my thinking is that Dropbox might not sync the changes in real time) So, I've created a Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) in Dropbox and mounted it. This tricks the program and allows me to save the recordings in Dropbox. Can anyone suggest a better solution as I'm not 100% sure whether Dropbox actually syncs the changes to the VHD. ps I do not have physical access to the server as I do not visit my home that often.

So at my work I have to copy Autocad drawings to a dropbox account to share the drawings with our fabrication shop. I have had no problems with my new computer for several months until the windows 10 creators update. Post update I have odd hangups when I copy files to dropbox, I can select a single file, copy, paste and then have to wait for up to 2 minutes before I am asked if I want to overwrite the existing file. The real issue is when I want to copy over multiple files at once. If I select more than 6 relativey small files (<800 KB) it can talke up to 20 minutes before I get the popup asking to overwrite existing.... HELP PLEASE it is driving me nuts... PS, I have no issues copying to our local server and other computers in the office can instantly upload to dropbox so it is just mine.

Dropbox have started sending out e-mails stating they'll be ending support for the "public" folder. The main use of this folder was to be able to send direct links to files in this folder that were exposed publicly like a folder on a webserver. Where as "private" files had to be shared by creating a share link to the file, this means they'll go to a download page at dropbox rather than accessing the file directly. There could be a few reasons for this, namely many people would leave files up in their public folder for downloads and forget about them, which can cause all sorts of problems. Dropbox was one of the last few to allow direct file access. Imgur still works for images and puu.sh for files (unused files will expire after a time on puush). Dropbox has been phasing out public folders for some time now, including preventing the use of the public folder for serving HTML files. https://www.dropbox.com/help/16

Hi, As you can see in the title, Dropbox emailed me that on the 3rd of October they will no-longer host my html file. (They will keep it on my dropbox, but only as a simple file) The problem is, I use it on Google Play as a privacy policy for my games and if I won't have one, I will lose a load of benefits (like family frendly and posibly the chance of it making it on the front page...) I am also 14, and I don't want my parents to pay money for a site no-one will see most of the time... Any ideas on how I can do this?

I have a massive issue with iTunes and I don't know how to stop this. For some reason every time I sync my Iphone to my iTunes it keeps duplicating the same images. How do I stop this from happening as it begins to eat up my storage space. I also think I might have the same issue with Dropbox when it syncs but I need to check on that again. So any Apple people out there?

Recently got a new Windows PC, and I noticed a weird thing happening. Illustrator files will not be synced on to my Windows Desktop. No error message or anything pops up, the folders with .ai files are just empty. This is the troubleshooting I've done already: * Checked internet connection. Good connection and stable. * Checked space in both my Mac and Windows PC, as well as in Dropbox. I have tons of space. * Check file names for conflicting characters. None are present. * Uninstalled, re-start pc, and Installed Dropbox several times. * Changed the name of the file on my Mac. And location too. Wherever I save or move an .ai file in Dropbox, they don't show up on my Windows PC. * Check that the file shows up on other devices (Iphone and Macbook pro) and on the Dropbox website. Important note: Whenever I save an .ai file or move an existing one to another folder within Dropbox from my Mac for example, I see my Mac DB syncing, as soon as it's done, I see my Windows DB syncing, and then I get the "up to date" message, but the file does not show up. So far this is only happening with .ai files, every other kind of file sync correctly on all devices. PLEASE HELP - I work from home and need to have this issue fixed.

I need a file solution for my web files. I want a program that can synchronize a whole drive across my laptop and my desktop, which both have allocated drives for these specific files. I don't want this "F:\Dropbox" shit. I just want it to sync the whole of "F:\". Any ideas?

Not gonna bother writing this one all perfect so here's what happened: "Bitlocker" a program that I've never used before just popped up on my PC and was like "I'm gonna set all your files to read only unless you send us bitcoin." "You have *some amount of time* to do this." "Do not attempt to look for this program or the files doing so will automatically lock the files." So me being "lul fake viruz" shut down my PC and upon rebooting it realized that all my files were locked and this program is no where to be found. I need help, I have some very important and sensitive information in my DropBox that I can no longer access!!! Please!

I have the problem that my Dropbox stopped syncing my files (one particular folder). I drop stuff in it on my PC (and they are still there) but they don't appear on my laptop nor in the web-version of dropbox. I have checked the sync settings on the desktop client to see if that particular folder is getting synced. All the other folders work fine. The unsynced folder that i am talking about is also a shared folder, however i am the founder of that folder and all my other devices also have syncing for that folder turned on. I really don#t know what to do, the folder is extremeley important.

Whether or not some of you who do use free version of Dropbox may have known that Dropbox has provided promotional ways to test their service by allow you to gain extra free space for trying out the beta. A few years ago Dropbox introduced Space Race. It involved your school participation. During this promotion I received 15GB of free storage. The Space Race promotional period expires on March 4, 2015, at which point your Dropbox limit will automatically return to your original amount you have gathered; this will reset my account back to the free 9GB I have gathered from signing up friends. It does not sound like Dropbox will remove your data but according to the message you will not be able to add any new data as a result of you using more than you have space for. They are also providing 50% off when you upgrade but you must do this before March 4.

MS really wants people to start using OneDrive and I do not disagree with their push to increasing the amount of storage you get, even if it is temporary. Its a shot across the bow to DropBox and co. specifically (the irony in this promotion didn't escape me). The shot is to offer higher storage amounts on their base levels. These 5, 10 and 15GB plans are ridiculous given how fast and easy you can fill those up, even with photos and video much less anything else. So I'll take my 100GB and make use of it, and by the time it comes to actually subscribe, we might have even cheaper storage pricing. This is my account right now, I can actually make use of OneDrive as a place to store event photos now without worrying about paring down my file sizes: http://hothardware.com/news/microsoft-offers-another-100gb-of-free-onedrive-storage-if-you-link-a-dropbox-account

Hi, I've made a video and want to share it with certain people. Now I don't want them to give the link to other people. Is there a cloud service that lets you manually accept requests? So I send them a link, they click it, fill their name in and then I accept it and they can download it? I've seen it in Bittorrent Sync already but those people don't want to install a program on their pc just to download something. Thanks in advance

it turns out if you have been using the dropbox selective syn feature your files may not have been as safe as you thought for a small number of users. you will know if you are effected when you receive this email below with the subject "A note about Dropbox and Selective Sync" There being nice about it and offering 1 years pro. I was lucky as I am a PhD student this could have caused me some major issues. But i am more tech savvy than most and have been worried about the cloud corrupting all my files since i started using it. So I have been taking weekly archives of my 100gb drop box, so i would have always been covered but there going to be some horror story of lost photos ect. i wonder just how small the user base is and how long the bug has been there. I am a major dropbox user so i was probably one the more likely people to get the bug. Lucky for me all the files were lost were related to a html based manual that i had taken a off line copy off, so i did not lose anything. some other reports below http://petapixel.com/2014/07/31/cautionary-tale-bug-dropbox-permanently-deleted-8000-photos/ https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8440985 New main stream reports http://www.maximumpc.com/oops_dropbox_bug_selective_sync_inadvertently_deletes_files_2014 http://www.slashgear.com/dropbox-selective-sync-confirmed-to-have-selective-amnesia-13350384/

Hey all, so I've been downloading quite a lot of songs recently (never really listened to music), and I just thought of a decent idea. What I propose is that people upload their music (as in music that you've downloaded) to either Dropbox or SoundCloud, or maybe some other cloud service (preferably SoundCloud, because, well, that's it use). So I'm asking before I make the thread is if, A. Would anyone be interested in uploading their music for the benefit of others (so they don't have to scavenge it themselves), and definitely, B. If this is completely legal, with copyright laws and such. I'm sure it'd be fine if the free released songs were uploaded to SoundCloud (or something alike) for others, but I'd like to know about other songs, and if a referral to the YT video and the producer/publisher would be needed. If this is able to be created I'd like it if there was a specified genre with the playlist and/or specified composer/publisher, NOT just "kewl moosik" or "epic sweg beats", but instead formatted like so: "_genre_ - _composer_ - _song name_" with the song, and "_genre_" as the playlist name. I'd like to know if this is possible and if anyone would be interested. Cheers! Edit: This idea isn't set in stone, so if the majority think it's a rubbish idea than I'd easily be able to let go of it. I think this idea is a miss, too many parties to contact for permission to share music.

http://techcrunch.com/2014/10/16/soccer-dropbox-airbnb/ "A week after a video of an argument between a handful of local teenagers and Dropbox and Airbnb employees went viral, hundreds of demonstrators protested at San Francisco City Hall, asking for the city’s parks to be freely open to the public. The city’s parks and recreation general manager acquiesced, dropping the reservation requirement at night for that specific park in the Mission District. For background, a handful of local teenagers were playing a pick-up soccer game a few months ago, when a group of men in Dropbox shirts asked them to leave because they had paid to reserve the field for a league game. For years, when the Mission Playground used to be covered in cement, local kids would play seven-on-seven pick-up games and it was always free for drop-ins, unlike other city parks that required reservations. In 2012, the park underwent a $7.5 million renovation and the city’s parks and recreation department instituted a new set of rules. As part of that, there was a new reservation system on certain nights of the week for a $27 permit. Parks and recreation general manager Phil Ginsburg said that his department made that decision after notifying 700 community leaders and all residents within a quarter-mile of the park in English and Spanish and holding three community meetings back in 2009. He said that the new system left the park open for drop-in play 96 percent of the time. But that left the neighborhood children feeling slighted, because those evening hours were prime slots. They made this video recording after several conflicts like this had already happened over many months. "This divide has been fueled by bad choices by the parks and recreation department,” said city supervisor David Campos, who is running to represent San Francisco in the state assembly in next month’s elections. “They created different expectations with folks in the community, who thought that they could reserve this field. We collectively on both sides want a policy that works for all San Franciscans. We cannot be a city where you have to have money to access public space."" Watch the video here. In the Bay Area, there has been a lot of talk about this. In San Francisco, there have been blocked tech buses going to take people to Silicon Valley, people have vandalized Google's buses, and many other protests. Because of the people moving into the area to work for the tech companies in Silicon Valley, the price of housing has risen all over the Bay Area, especially in San Francisco. "The average rent in San Francisco shot up 11.9 percent -- to $3,096 per month -- in the third quarter of this year from the same period last year. In Oakland, the average rental price is $2,124, up 10.3 percent from last year, according to RealFacts, while San Jose's average rent rose 9.2 percent, to $2,015." (http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_24813197/bay-area-protests-tech-worker-buses-highlights-pay) This video is just another example of something that has been affected by the booming tech industry. Personally, I like having all of the tech companies in the Bay Area. It's fun to drive the highway and pass Amazon, Google, NASA, Intel and many other of the biggest tech companies in the world.
