Summary New discovery from players of Resident Evil Revelations reveals that Capcom has been implementing new DRM called Enigma for their games (some of the older ones, for now) as replacement for Denuvo. The new DRM was discovered when there was a sudden update for RE Revelations, and this DRM basically prevents modding or use of cheat engine, and perhaps much worse, tanks the performance 10 - 15FPS with constant stutters. Numerous reports also said that every Capcom games with this DRM can't be played on Steam Deck at all. Capcom reverted the updates few hours after but only for RE Revelations. But shortly after, it gets even worse again, as another report coming out that the new DRM has over 34 detected malware inside, and allegedly the DRM was made by only one random russian with a questionable 'company' that has no address (only stated it's located in Moscow) and barely registered in Russia, which could basically qualifies as dummy company The list of games that received DRM update are Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil Revelations (reverted), Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Capcom Arcade Stadium, Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Vol. 1, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Vol. 2, Mega Man Zero/ ZX Legacy Collection, and 64bit version of Strider Quotes My thoughts ooooooooh nononono this is just not looking great at all. All of this, just because of a wink wink mod showed on a SF6 tournament??? Like, come on Capcom you literally cooked so damn good last year, well at least until you released that presentation that basically says modding is cheating and some mods also 'potentially morally questionable and could ruin company reputation' and game price hasn't really gone up yet, but we were like oh ok that's just bad presentation, no, bad capcom. But now you're slowly doing this for real now? Denuvo is already bad enough, Monster Hunter mod video takedown is also frustrating enough, and now this?? Like, if you really worried about a small time local tourney being streamed and some weirdo accidentally leaving smut mods on, then they would also have to contend with the fact that half the SF6 character design is... something. And while the detection is yet to be researched more because it could be false positive, the fact that Capcom even paid this one DRM 'company' with no reputation at all is also looking real fishy. I've been looking up if Transformers: War for Cybertron is compatible with modern pc hardware and software(Windows 11) as it is a decade old. I found out that it has SecuRom v07.42.0001 on it and that this application could possibly stop the game from running on my pc because Microsoft dropped support for it. So I'm just wondering if I can not play the game because I am planning on getting the dvd. (I am also using an external Asus Zendrive to run it.)

I recently tried out ungoogled chromium. A big problem I've run into is it will not play drm protected content and from what I've read I think I need to update widevine content decryption module. I cannot find any useful instruction on how to do this on windows 10. How can I update this, and is there a relatively simple way to update this and other parts in the browser's components? Chromium version 110.0.5481.177 (Official Build, ungoogled-chromium) (64-bit) Widevine Content Decryption Module - Version: 0.0.0.0

Specs Asus TUF B550M-plus Wifi (BIOS 1602) Amd 5600x Nvidia 3070 Corsair TX650M Windows 10 Home - 64bit / Windows 7 Premium - 64-bit (Dualboot) Problem When starting Windows 7, computer hangs at 'Starting Windows' (just before the balls come together to make the windows logo) and needs hard reboot. Happens every time. Unable to access OS Cause (Seems to be) Installing Nvidia 3070 drivers (designed for Win7-64bit) in Windows 7. Problem occured directly after installing drivers and rebooting. Other Windows 10 all working perfectly - only problems are with Win7 Thought problem might be because I haven't installed any chipset drivers for my mboard, but afaik there are no chipset drivers for Win7 for this board. Tried installing the Win10 LAN drivers (as no internet even through Ethernet) and somehow corrupted the winload.efi..? Had to do an entire reinstall of Win7 to fix Had to sideload USB drivers to get Win7 installation. Used a program called 7UPv57 from this link SecureBoot is disabled. Was able to boot into Windows 7 before installing the driver. Why? Trying to run a 2005 game that uses Safedisk DRM. Security update means it doesn't work on Win10. No noCD patch that works, so can't bypass DRM that way. Tried disabling Safedsc.sys driver/bypass digital signing etc. in Win10. No luck. Tried VM. 5600x isn't an APU, using an mATX board so no 2nd PCI_E, so no way to have GPU passthrough Solution Copious amounts of alcohol Failing that - get Windows 7 to load with GPU drivers installed/an alternate way of running a game with Safedisk DRM.

I installed yet another launcher to play with some friends, and saw my notifications bar just overflowing with launchers. Rockstar, Riot, Steam, Origin, Epic. On top of Adobe, Unity, Nvidia, Asus and so on, all chewing away at system resources all the time. Cheeky bastards It got me wondering, how much power is all that stuff using? What about on all the other rigs? It's not just gamers; servers, consoles and browsers all spend cycles on DRM too. This must be a massive global energy investment! But how big? My NapkinMathFu has failed me, so I wonder if LTT folk know the answer?

Interesting article that show the dark side of TPM, and explains why Microsoft is trying to force it. Taken from article: "This article is an opinion held by a subset of members about the potential plan from Microsoft about their enforcement of a TPM to use Windows 11 and various features. This article will not go into great detail about all the good and bad of a TPM; there will be links at the end for you to continue your research, but it will go into the issues we see with enforcement." Windows 11: TPMs and Digital Sovereignty : https://secret.club/2021/06/28/windows11-tpms.html I would be curious about peoples thoughts after fully reading the article.

Hello all, I've been doing a little bit of research (besides Modern Vintage Gamer's video on it) on the infamous StarForce DRM (Digital Rights Management) solution, and I'm wondering how bad it really was. What's your StarForce DRM story? Did it linger after you removed all the games with it? How annoying/terrible of an experience was trying to deal with it for you guys? How did you deal with it?

Hey guys just wanna know what you think about DRMs. PC game piracy has always been a problem and anti tamper DRMs like DENUVO are doing a great job but hackers eventually crack the DRM and pirates enjoy the full game with a simple click.whereas a legitimate purchaser has to verify the legitimacy of his copy via internet connection... This happened to me yesterday I wanted to play just cause 3 and couldn't cause my internet connection was down (server maintenance) So I couldn't play the game that I legit purchased ? I know piracy hurts the developer but it has never been proven that putting a anti-tamper DRM like DENUVO boosts the game sales either... Look at CD Projekt Red they make great games and don't need any DRM to break sales records !!! And at any point I'd like to buy games from digital distributer like GOG cause DRM free means I actually own that copy of the game. whereas DRM means I pay for license to play that game and not the actual game... What do you guys think ?

Google's web browser Chrome, its next version 57, will have the Widevine DRM permanently enable and there is no way to disable it. The whole DRM began with EME (Encrypted Media Extension) The advantages of that, was users who wants to play protected content, won't need to run additional plugins such as Adobe flash or Microsoft Silverlight, that's used by Netflix. Since Silverlight was a dying pluging and Adobe flash has its own set of security issue, Netflix had to write their entire site for HTML, where they decided to just create a dedicated program instead of running through a browser. The problem with EME was it did not get rid of the plugin such as Silverlight or Flash it had promised, and now it requires another DRM plugin for which ever browser you're using, such as if a user is running on Chrome, to play protect content, they will need both the EME and Widevine DRM plugins. The DRM itself also possess a security risk of their own as, Other problem are One other plug in that cannot be disable in Chrome 57 is its native PDF viewer. When opening up PDF files, it won't allow user to open the pdf file with the program of their choice. DRM protects the artist's work, as they work hard for it. But to some what break the consumers' PC is, something they need to find a better solution, where both sides can agree on. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/chrome-57-permanently-enabled-drm,33527.html

Just had to post this even though it may be a rumor, but it appears that Denuvo Software Solutions may be using an unlicensed version of VMProtect Software as a part of it's anti-piracy software... From the article at TechSpot: http://www.techspot.com/news/69572-denuvo-allegedly-protected-own-anti-piracy-software-pirated.html As the article states, the sources are a little bit sketchy, however, if there is some truth behind this, it seems kind of funny... If anything, it may be a lesson to Denuvo to ensure their own licensing is in order. UPDATE: VMProtect Software has issued a formal statement clarifying that there are no open issues between VMProtect and Denuvo although it does not really provide any details... http://vmpsoft.com/20170606/vmprotect-and-denuvo-gmbh/ Whether there really was anything that happened in the background still isn't clear, however it would appear that Denuvo and VMProtect are currently in each others good graces.

So, Recently I upgraded my pc (processor) Replaced my humble and loyal Fx8320 with Ryzen 1700x So far I have had a great experience with my new processor. Games like GTA 5 and Witcher 3 use 45% to 55% Cpu horsepower at peak respectively. Average Cpu usage stays at 37% - 45% even for the most Cpu intensive games. Until I bought assassin's creed Origins, I experienced some shuttering and occasional frame drops from say 50fps to 25fps which caused huge lag. Thought it was a GPU issue and hence I updated my drivers yet the end results were kind of the same... Then some game news outlet posted about AC origins maxing CPU usage to 100%. This sparked my curiosity, there was no way this game could max my CPU I thought. And I was right but surprised at the same time. My CPU was at 85% usage with average usage at around 70%. Well, unless I messed something up in the bios there is no way this game should Utilize more than 60% of CPU. Ubisoft as always has dismissed the claim that Anti Tamper DRM has anything to do with this abnormal CPU usage. They went one step ahead by adding VMprotect atop Denuvo Anti-tamper. it's ironic that an Anti-piracy software needs protection for itself. Anyways I do believe that developers who made the game deserve to get paid every penny they ask for. Piracy is not only unethical but also a crime. Thing is, we the legitimate consumers have to experience this inconvenience. Once the game is unlocked (hacked) pirates will play the game without any restrictions whereas, we have to verify our purchase with an internet connection on top have to deal with these anti-tamper softwares constantly stressing our hardware... Why don't publishers get it that pirates will never buy the games to begin with. And it's been proven that piracy doesn't affect the overall game's sales figure. Let the quality of your games speak for itself. Great games don't need these anti-piracy softwares to get decent sales figures, we have seen CD Projekt do it and many others too. Idk why I am writing this... I am just frustrated Below is an image posted on Reddit showing proof of the Anti-tamper software Maxing the CPU usage...

This meme has been circulating the forums and games media for quite a while now, but i've not actually seen anyone back this up. Right now the controversy seems to revolve around Assassin's Creed Origins, where it's now claimed by every games outlet that without a doubt the DRM is to blame for. Their proof is a user named "voksi", who provides proof of the game code repeatedly calling for VMprotect whenever the character moves. Now i'm not claiming to be an expert on gamecode, but I'm not as easily impressed like the people over at Kotaku or kitguru either. To me, this doesn't prove it takes up many CPU cycles. All this does is prove it calls to vmp0, nothing more. https://www.kitguru.net/channel/generaltech/matthew-wilson/updated-dual-drm-might-be-causing-high-cpu-usage-on-assassins-creed-origins/ https://www.reddit.com/r/CrackWatch/comments/79pd62/update_on_ubisofts_anticonsumerism/ https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/79n1sr/denuvo_causes_3040_additional_cpu_usage_in/ The supposed proof: https://image.prntscr.com/image/_6qmeqq0RBCMIAtGK8VnRw.png The same claims were made with Denuvo, and if there was clear signs of Denuvo causing excessive overhead by taking up many CPU cycles, we'd have seen it by now? I did a google search (removing the last few days from the results because it was literally pages of Asscreed only), and can't find any substantial evidence of comparissons between cracked titles, running side-by-side showing a significant uptick in CPU load. To be honest, looking at the game when navigating the City, there seems to be a lot going on. And my guess is the next-gen consoles also have their CPU's pegged to handle all those drawcalls. Exactly how do people expect such drawcall heavy games to translate to the PC, running a much higher overhead API like DX11 at twice the framerate, on CPU's with fewer threads (or at all)? If the same was true today, as people have been claiming with Denuvo all this time, companies would have long dropped the services. As optimizing the game to get it running across multiple platforms costs a lot of time and money. And yet they continued to use it, meaning it can't be that significant. They're only dropping it now because the service since it no doubt adds fee's, and the games get cracked in hours anyway. So...anyone got a unbiased, conclusive test for me that without question proves this claim? Which is also corroberated by other outlets? To be honest, the only thing Ubisoft really did wrong is not explicitly mention the recommended specs are required for 30fps, and mention the game is not intended to run higher so use at own discredtion.

source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1323084 I really hope other developers get their heads out of their collective asses and never use this shit again it took time, but Denuvo got cracked in the end and Doom was one of it's "victims" - DRM doesn't prevent piracy, it hurts sales ps: Doom Update 5 was released yesterday https://steamcommunity.com/games/379720/announcements/detail/585862749595357814 but there's nothing in the patch notes relating to this DMR change --- hearsay on why Denuvo was removed from DOOM:

Reddit post by game cracker Voksi: https://www.reddit.com/r/CrackWatch/comments/908pg1/sega_rushes_the_new_denuvo_in_new_sonic_manias TorrentFreak article: https://torrentfreak.com/sega-accused-of-anti-consumer-behavior-with-rushed-sonic-mania-plus-protection-180720/ "I'm gonna focus here on the second post. This slowdown is caused by a trigger in the time attack menu when you scroll down till the last levels, which is not closed properly, which causes Denuvo to continue writing in its section until the game is closed, which causes massive game slowdown." "I've encountered this exact anti-tamper trigger while making my crack, which put the game in the exact same loop, in the exact same spot. So, this trigger is failing for this person on a legit copy. Good job, SEGA!" Proof and steam discussions on it in the Reddit thread. Voksi is a member of notorious game cracking group, REVOLT, and is known for their hard work cracking lots of Denuvo games the last few weeks (check their Reddit history).

SOURCE: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2018/06/google-play-security-metadata-and.html?m=1 Google just announced that they'd start to ad a special string of metadata to all apps on the Play store. This is not all bad news, Google is reportedly doing this so make offline peer-to-peer distribution safer as as APK's not containing this DRM will not run. This could potentially also make pirating APK's safer as you wouldn't be able to install potential viruses. Although there's nothing saying that Google can't turn around and abuse this on a later date. EDIT: This is what Google themselves say about why they're adding this: "One of the reasons we're doing this is to help developers reach a wider audience, particularly in countries where peer-to-peer app sharing is common because of costly data plans and limited connectivity."

It was released today, quite recently. Crackwatch on Reddit has it up, but I'm pretty sure it would be against TOS to link. So that's Denuvo 4.8+VMProtect cracked. The only real question is if they did it through good old fashioned cracking methods or figured out a way to use MELTDOWN to grab the encryption keys and worked backwards from there. If the latter, DRM will effectively cease to exist until Coffee Lake processors can no longer run games.

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/09/hps-drm-sabotages-off-brand-printer-ink-cartridges-with-self-destruct-date/ Another day another company trying to monopolies a business. Not only are they causing people who bought significantly more affordable off brand ink cartridges to basically get a bricked printer but it's also popping up for people who legitimately purchased HP cartridges. I wonder how long till someone figures out a "No HP cartridge patch" to let people use the device they've purchased.
