  1. Hello Everyone, Getting a weird problem trying to get my full internet plan download speed at my computer. Here's the situation: Comp 1 (my computer) is connected with a 20ft cat5 cable to a TP-Link TL-SG105 which is then connected with a 50ft cat6 cable back to the modem. Comp 2 (wife's computer) is connected with a similar 20ft cat5 cable to the same switch. The internet plan speed is 600Mbps down and 10Mbps up. Comp 1 can download games from Steam at a max of 50-60Mbps (connected to closest US server), and gets ~360Mbps from speedtest.net. Comp 2 can download games from Steam at 540Mbps (connected to same server), and gets ~550Mbps from speedtest.net. Comp 1 has an i7-8700k installed on a Gigabyte Z370N Wifi motherboard with two 1Gbps network ports on the rear I/O. Comp 2 has a Ryzen 5 3600 installed on a ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4 with 1 1Gbps network port on the rear I/O. Here's what I've tried so far to fix the speed issues on comp 1: * connecting the current cable to the other port, no change * connecting extra cat5 cable to comp 1 and switch, no change * connecting comp 2's cat5 cable to both ports on comp 1, no change * connecting directly to the modem, small improvement (speedtest.net results went up to 390Mbps, I'm assuming this increase was from removing the overhead of the switch) * tested built-in wifi with the motherboard's included antenna, worse results (expected but worth testing still just in case there was a significant improvement and I could download on wifi and then play the games on ethernet) * updated bios, chipset drivers, and LAN drivers from the motherboard support page, no change * contacted my ISP, they said there was a decent amount of packet loss between the ISP and my modem, but that doesn't easily explain why comp 2 is able to get access to the full download speeds and comp 1 can't. Is there something I'm missing here? Or is the MB and/or CPU just taking a crap and it's time to replace them? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
  2. Before moving my computer's download speed was fine, but after I moved locations and set-up my computer again, the download speed is less than 50 MB/s . For some background, the people in the home have no problems with the internet, and in fact when I take a speed test my download speed is the same as everyone else(I am hooked up to ethernet). When I try to download something it downloads significantly slow at the aforementioned speed. I factory reset my computer, I got a new SSD, reset CMOS, re-seated my ram, I also used a different ethernet cord just to see if it was the problem(it wasn't). I obviously think it's something to do with my computer itself, and I am thinking that the problem may be the motherboard itself, although I am hoping that it is not. If anyone else have any other ideas please let me know. I don't know what could have happened between the time I moved locations.
  3. Hello, I'm asking this question because I had quite a few games on my HDD around 600 GB of them. I decided to get a 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD and I have installed Windows and some drivers on it already. The main question is is it better (faster) for me to transfer data from HDD to SSD or to download the games again? I'm asking this because my internet isn't the best, It enough to play games but at best times I have download speeds of 40Mbps, but my average is at 15-25Mbps if not less. Having such low means that if I want to download (for example) BF5 it would take like 6 hours. So I want to understand if it's faster for me to connect both drives and just move files from one to another? Old HDD: 1TB Seagate BarrAcuda New SSD: 1TB Crucial MX500
  4. Hi, I've recently changed my internet provider because of a deal. I used to have 400mb/s download with Vidéotron but it used copper cable. Now that I'm with Bell, they announced 1GB download with Fiber. When I'm testing the speed on https://www.speedtest.net/ , I do get connected to the best server near me with 1ms at ~1GB download (physically located 5 minutes of me) so in theory it seems to be better. But something I've realized is that when I'm downloading files from Mega or Nopy (File hosting sites), the download speed is way slower than what I used to have with 400mb/s. I'm aware that it's /8 as it's actual megabytes instead of megabits, but I've just downloaded the newest version of Blender (183mb) file from Blender.org and it took 4 minutes. I'm suspecting that depending on which server I'm downloading will affect the ping, which won't give the 1GB advertised download speed, but is this normal? On Steam I did actually download my games pretty fast so I see that it does work... but why so many other sites are slower? I've also used fast.com in the past (But I'm not sure if it's reliable) and it did give me an accurate amount of 400mb/s before, but now it's ~40mb/s. The server is physically located in Montreal, which is 2 hours of where I live. Is this normal or should I contact Bell? They are covering all around Canada so I'm surprise of this issue. Thank you!
  5. I have tested 2 different PCs in the house while trying to limit for differences between tests. The PCs use different components, but I built them both and they both work as expected. I am testing the internet speeds on both using speedtest by Ookla. I am using the same cat6 ethernet cable connected directly to our modem for both PCs. The process is as follows: I test PC A and it has a download of ~950Mbps (close to the gigabit we pay for), and then I immediately unplug the ethernet cable from PC A and plug it into PC B and test the internet on PC B which is then ~150-200Mbps. What could be causing this extreme difference in download speed? PC A has Windows 10 Pro while PC B has Windows 10 Home. PC B has a built-in wifi card, but I turned off the wifi and only left the bluetooth on.
  6. TL; DR; I've setup my PC to dual boot and steam downloads (not installs, I'm talking about consistent high speed download rates) the same games much faster on Linux than they do on Windows. Has anyone else noticed the same? Here's some information: I have a gigabit ethernet connection and I recently had to format my PC, I use the same free version of Windows 10 (might this be the issue?) and the latest LTS version of Ubuntu (forgot the version number but I setup the bootstick only a month back) Both OSs are on the same Gen3 NVME SSD and yes I was using the same ethernet connection in both instances. When picking my games to download on Linux, the download rates were consistently above 80MB/s, something which Windows only does during the first few seconds of the download then drops down to below 30MB/s and stays there. I also ensured both the Steam apps used the same Download Region when I noticed the difference. Is there a way to get the same download speeds on Windows? And what is slowing it down?
  7. My Macbook pro 16" is showing completely different download speeds vs my iPad. The laptop is relatively new and the only programs I have installed are spotify and chrome. I ran my tests on https://www.speedtest.net/ with the same server on both devices. On my iPad, the download speed is 79.48 mbps vs 59.65 mbps on my macbook. Sometimes the download speed on my macbook pro has reached 2 mbps and fluctuates tremendously. Is there a specific reason for this?
  8. I'm wanting to know what the download speed of a 10 Mbps fibre line should be. This fibre line was installed 2 days ago so i doubt i'm being throttled. One would think a download speed close to 10 Mbps but my results on a speedtest.net (included screenshot) are far from that.
  9. so obviously this is incorrect it was a glitchy combo of my internet being terrible and steam not liking it just thought it was funny and wanted to share maybe one day we will be able to have speeds in the pebibyte range. hey i can dream lol
  10. im trying to download the witcher 3 on steam and its very slow it is only using around 0.7% of my hard drive when i look on task manager how can i increase this to help download speed
  11. Currently I have my PS4 and this PC plugged into the same powerline adapter (TP-Link TL-PA4010PKIT). Now I noticed that my PC only downloads with a speed of 500-800kb/s but my PS4 with ~1.6Mb/s. Both speeds are still slow but its a huge difference for me. Speedtests for my PC are 13 down/3 up and for my PS4 10 down/2 up and its confusing for me since both of them are connected to the same adapter and only one of them is powered at the same time. I only have one monitor and so its either the PS4 or PC. Did I configure something wrong or how does that happen? Edit: Also, it just happened again that my PC loses the internet connection for a few minutes before going up again. Could it be something with my ethernet port since I only have these problems on PC and not PS4?
  12. If i get a new router will i be able to get better download and upload speeds.
  13. Hi, my pc isn't getting my full download speeds that i'm used to. I have had this problem before and i didn't find any solution how to fix it until it just was back to normal speeds again. It lasted for 3-5weeks (i don't really remember) andsuddenly without me tweaking on anything it was just back again. I have the same issue now where i have around 50-60Mbps in download and 400Mbps in upload where the results should have been the same. I'm connected to a wifi repeater (why i don't have 500 in upload consistently), but my brother is also connected to the same repeater and have roughly 400 in upload and download. I have tried to switch ethernet cable and connections, but it doesn't help. Any help or advice? thx. (what i have now) (what i used to have)

  16. So i've decided to download Battlefield 4 and my origin download speed isn't going any higher than 7.60mb/s however in task manager it says that its getting 62mb/s is there any way to make the download speed higher in Origin or its like a locked limit?
  17. Hi there So my download speed on speedtest shows around 50Mbps and also on steam it shows 5MB/s even sometimes peeking at 6MB/s but for some reason my download speed on chrome is only like 68KB/s or 288KB/s max, and also when im downloading updates for my Nvidia driver it shows me 288KB/s and also when i try to watch a stream it buffers alot and lags ass hell even when watching youtube either the video has bad quality or its going to buffer alot. So was wondering what is wrong with my pc do i need to fix anything or is it a hardware issue pls help me :) Thanks :)
  18. I recently installed a tplink AC1300 pcie wifi adapter in my pc. I am currently in an apartment and unfortunately it would be impractical to have a wired connection. I have gigabit internet from my isp, and when I run speed tests on my computer it reads ~200-300 Mbps (on speedtest.net, fast.com, and google's speed test), which is about what I'd expect with a wifi connection. However, any time I try to download a file from the internet it takes much longer than expected; it's downloading at speeds on the order of 10 Mbps. The only explanation I've been able to find through googling is that it could be a problem with the sites/servers I'm downloading from, them not being able to handle as fast of a connection. However, I don't think that's my issue since my roommate is able to download the same files much faster (at speeds similar to those on the speed tests), which also rules out the router/isp. I don't think it's anything with my pc, since I've had wired connections in the past that behave as expected, so I've narrowed it down to either the adapter itself or the pcie slot, but it's still weird to me that I'm getting such a drastic difference between test speeds and actual download speeds. Any help is appreciated!
  19. Lately I have been having really bad throttling issues when downloading games from the Xbox PC store, sometimes downloads would go up to 25mb/s+ but most of the time they idle around 3-6 and sometimes throttle all the way down to kb/s, I don't have any sort of throttling enabled and I cant seem to fix it. I have fiber optic internet of 1000mb so it's definitely not my internet, my pc doesnt seem to be running out of resources and it is directly connected to my router through an ethernet port, my pc also supports gigabit ethernet so that is not the issue either that will be causing this horrible throttling, Can someone help me out or explain why this is happening?
  20. so whenever I try to download a game or update one the download goes on for about a minute and then the speed just keeps dropping and reaches 0 bytes/sec. Only way to get it downloading again is to restart my PC. Then the same thing happens. This didn't happen before. Need hellppp
  21. So before i had two hard drives, i would always get upset by how my download speeds would throttle when i had a game open. this was later explained to me as probably hitting the I/O limit of a mechanical hard drive. this is acceptable, or at least understandable. but currently i'm attempting to install a game to my SATA SSD, while playing a game that's installed to my HDD. and the download has still dropped 3.5-4 MB/s. I mean, i have a Ryzen 1600, so processing power shouldn't be the issue, and the game downloading is installed through Steam while the game running is installed through the Windows store. i don't quite understand what's happening here.
  22. I don't have Ethernet access in the room I'm currently stationed in. My only option is wifi. After running a speed test from my room (wifi) and a speed test when my pc was connected directly to my router, my ping was lowered by 5 but my download speed was raised by almost 100Mbps. Obviously this should have happened because I was connected directly to my router. I'm a huge gamer and I want the best connection and a difference of 5 ping isn't too huge for me but the giant jump in download time was big to me. SO MY MAIN QUESTION is could that big jump in download speeds really affect my gaming connection? I know it is mainly based around ping but I'm wondering if this could also be a factor Because I was going to invest in a pair of Powerlines to get a direct connection in my room. But if download speed is the only thing that really changes and it doesnt effect my gaming experience to much, I don't want to drop 40 bucks.
  23. I have a querry regarding my ISP, hope this is the most apropriate section. I don't have a complaint, but rather a curiosity... I have a 2 Mbps (that's megabits, and yes, we have such slow speeds in third world countries) unlimited internet connection. But strangely, on most torrents with plenty of seeders/leechers, I get download speeds of about 3-4 MBps (mebabytes, with a capital B , and I have seen speeds as high as 9 MBps. Also, I can play 1080P youtube, and the buffering bar just zaps ahead of playback, no stuttering. As far as I know, 2 megabits is not enough for 1080p youtube. I also higher speeds in Windows updates. But other than the aforementioned cases, the Internet speed everywhere else is roughly 256 KBps, which is what it is supposed to be (2048/8 = 256). My query is: how and why? I first thought that if any peers/seeds were on the ISP's own network, and the data didn't have to go to the Internet and back, the ISP was allowing much higher speeds internally. But that couldn't explain other cases. I would like to have your thoughts. This is not marketted by the ISP anywhere. The minimum promised speed is delivered everywhere, so I don't know if they are breaking any laws there. But my friend also has the same experience with the ISP, so I guess it is true for other customers as well, and thus it is hard to assume that it's some glitch and the people at ISP don't know. If they are doing it intentionally, then I wonder how they able to afford all the bandwidth (my bill is equivalent to roughly US $8.7 per month, there's more discount for 6 month and yearly payments). For obvious reasons, I did not want to discuss this issue with the ISP, and also I do not want to reveal what ISP I am talking about. It is a small local ISP, and I have heard that they use a leased line from a much larger ISP.
  24. Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any help you can give. Sorry for the length. I can't find a real solution anywhere else, just people with similar problems finding solutions that do not work for me, like deleting a programme that I do not have, or threads just going inactive and never getting solved. I'm really hoping you can help. The Problem I've been having a lot of trouble with my PC in the last few months, exactly how long I haven't kept track of and I'm convinced it's getting worse, especially lately to the point where I can't use my internet past simple browsing. My computer alone, is getting a reduced download speed, lately at an average of 4mb/s down, but all too often when I actually try to use that speed it will drop as low as 1mb/s or become practically useless. For instance, this morning I tried to stream to Twitch while I had 4mb download and maybe 5 up, but when I actually try to use it, it drops and becomes useless. However strangely, right now I'm seeing a speed of 20mb down, which is the highest I ever see it go since it first dropped down from 40mb. Every other device in the house, even ones I place right next to my PC is getting the speed I expect at 40mb/s. The upload speed seems unaffected on all devices at an average of 8mb/s. History When I first built my PC a little over a year ago, I remember there being no problem with the internet, but as time went on (I can't be sure how long) I noticed that it got worse. It started at 40mb then after a while I never saw it going above 25mb, now lately it rarely goes above 10mb. All of this is only happening on my PC, every other device in the house is still at 40mb. Specifications http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss157/Maff92/Specs_z... I didn't feel like much, if any of my hardware was relevant to the problem, other than the fact that I've read that some programs belonging to Hardware companies have been known to limit download speeds. Eg. AMD Quick Stream. However I now believe that it is a hardware problem. I've read that people with similar problems to mine, did a clean install of their OS and it didn't fix it. This to me shows that it couldn't possibly be a software problem or a programme slowing me down. I've already ruled out my Pcie wifi card or the wifi itself as being a problem, as the problem still exists with a different adapter. Seeing as the wifi is not the problem, I don't think trying an Ethernet cable will change anything, and even then it would just be a workaround. I want to fix the problem not avoid it. The research and work I've already done 1. I first read that AMD Quick Stream has caused similar problems I'm having for a lot of people, I checked and I didn't have it installed. I then went through every single process that was running on my PC and researched every one that I either didn't 100% trust or I didn't recognize, nothing suspicious came up. 2. Thinking it might be my Pcie wifi card, I bought a USB wifi adapter, installed it and even uninstalled the drivers for my card, but nothing changed. 3. Some things that a lot of people recommended to other people with similar problems got repeated a lot. So before anyone asks. I've done a virus scan, which came up with nothing, I've reinstalled all relevant drivers and rebooted all relevant hardware. I've checked that there aren't any programs taking up a significant amount of my bandwidth. 4. I feel I have ruled out that there could be a problem with my router, my wifi signal, my Pcie wifi card or my new USB wifi adapter. Also I think, but can't be 100% sure I've ruled out that there could be a problem with the software or any programmes on my PC. My conclusion I can only think that there is a problem with either my hardware, perhaps my motherboard or there is a program on my computer that is somehow limiting my download speeds while not using it up itself. So finally, I'm sorry for the length of this post, but I think more information now, might help keep the rest of the thread short and sweet. Thanks again so much for any help you can give, I really do appreciate it.
