  1. DIY or Buy ?

Do you prefer to buy things or make them yourself where possible?. Personally I am a DIY kind of guy. If you fall in the DIY department maybe post an image of something you made. I'm currently working on an Arduino based camera slider.
  2. Happy New Year everybody! I'll try and keep everything short and sweet! This will be my 3rd computer build. I built my first one back in 2012 (was finally starting to kick out on me) and just did an upgrade recently from Black Friday 2017. I’ve always had a big interest for DIY stuff, especially computer technology. After being mesmerized by beautiful PC builds, I stumbled on some sandal-and-sock-wearing guy named Linus building a PC desk. I never knew people would go that far besides your typical tower builds. From there that's when I decided that I wanted to start designing my own desk. Down the road I saw some very exquisite desk builds such as L3p Desk by Peter Brands, Project Ravage by Clownface1511, and Project Alternate by Deblow. These guys were a big inspirational contributor for what I envisioned for my own desk. It took me a few months+ to design this... Sad to say that long (first time using SketchUp ever) but I went in detail about literally everything in here (I will post more pictures down the road). I wanted to make a "manual" for myself when I start building. I don't want to rush any part of this project as I want to give it top notch quality. I will be using my local CNC shop or my old high school’s CNC machine to make the major cuts for this project. The glass will be custom cut and tempered for durability. I also have access to a bunch of power tools that I can use so I can make any other modifications to the desk as I may need. I am eager to cut my fingers off :D! I am pretty patient when it comes to building anything but if there seems to be any flaws or anything that seems like it wouldn’t work, please feel free to let me know. I am open to criticism and other ideas that would make this project better. I plan on using MDPC-X for sleeving all PSU cables and other computer wires to make cable management as easy and as pretty as possible. This is the colorway I will be sleeving with. All other visible wires (fans wires, LED wires, etc.) will be in accordance with this colorway as well. I ordered a sample kit for the MDPC-X wires to see how they look like in person before I decide to buy. 3. Hello everyone! I am going to build a NAS that will be used in a small business working with video production and I could need some opinions and recommendations. I recently got into this and I am still learning and researching. My intention for this thread is to learn more about this and hopefully end up with a list of what I should buy and build. I thank you in advance for taking the time reading this and helping me, it really means a lot to me! https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jPKGm8 In short this is what I would want to get from the NAS: Storage, raid and ZFS. I plan to start with between 16 and 20 Terabyte usable storage but with possibility to increase it in the future with ease. I want to be able to use PLEX without any issues for up to three multiple streams at the same time(1080p) but would be nice if we also could stream at least one 4k video without issues. Be able to send a download link to customers so they can download a specific file. Using a torrent client or even winrar is usually too advanced for the customer 10gb connection between the NAS and two PCs Parts. Budget: about 3000 USD maximum but less is much prefered. I was considering using Ryzen 5 1600 as it comes with a cooler, cheap and the new Ryzen is about to come out soon and I heard that they should be compatible with the motherboards for the first Ryzen cpus we have today, so we could upgrade the cpu in the future if so required. But I read that there is issues with NAS and ryzen but maybe that is no longer the case? What CPU would you recommend would be enough for what we need the NAS for? Seems like Xeon is the way to go? Form factor the the motherboard is nothing we do care about as it could just as well be a full tower even as long as it does what it is supposed to do and we can upgrade it in the future. ECC ram is probably good to have and I read that for ZFS it is basically required but I still see some people not using it. But I want it. Starting with 32gb with the possibility to have a total of 64gb in the future if it would ever be required. Possible to start with 16x2 and just add another kit of the same type into it in the future? For ZFS it's recommended that we have 1gb ram per 1T storage. FreeNas requires minimum 8gb ram. So is it 8gb + 1gb ram per 1T storage that I should follow strictly? It seems to be a bit of jungle as you need to really choose the right combination of cpu, motherboard and ram for a NAS. Recommendations for this would be extremely appreciated. Plan is to start with between 16-20gb usable storage. I will go with WD red or Seagate Ironwolf as it seems to be the best for what we need. Do they have to be 7200rpm or can they be 5400rpm? Will mechanical hard drives be the bottleneck in 10Gbps Ethernet? mirrored or RAIDZ2? As we do not require the NAS to be small we do not care about the case of it that much and I will pick the cheapest one that fits whatever motherboard we go with that has a lot of space for HDDs. But if you have a good recommendation on this please share! PSU I guess I will just add cheapest random from a reputable brand. My plan is to build up a part list based on what I learn from you and what you recommend and post it here for final opinions before I make the purchase.
  4. Diy mech numpad

I want to build a DIY mech numoad for cheap. I already have gat browns lying around as well as pbt caps. Think I should just buy this and swap the switches out for gat browns?https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32822959067.html#autostay or should I actually get a PCB, case and plate?
  5. What brands do you guys recommend for custom cable sleeving? The only one I know of at the moment is para-cord but wanted to see if you guys have had better experience or any quality brands that you can recommend. Thanks in advance!
  6. I was looking for an under 200$ mother-/mainboard for gaming and I picked these three but now I need your help to choose the best for my build Build: Intel I5-8400, 4X 16GB DDR4 RAM, GTX 1050 ti (later I plan to add a GTX 2050 when it comes out (SLI)), 800W power supply. Some of you could help me find a good case under 100$ 1. What motherboard should I buy? ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-H ¦ MSI Z370 SLI PLUS ¦ MSI Z370 KRAIT GAMING ¦ GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS ULTRA 2. What Motherboard would you buy for an Coffee Lake build? 3. If you got any better recommendations let me know (because this is my first build)
  7. http://www.robolink.com/codrone/ That is one of the few I've found, but seems to have serious quality issues, such as engines burning after 4 hours of flight time and erratic drift. I'm looking to program a tethered quadcopter to carry a rubber ducky in a circle for bow target practice. But I'm sure people will have a million uses for these things.
  8. NAS - DIY or Prebuilt

So I'm in pretty bad shape and in need of a NAS. I'm trying to figure out what is the most cost-effective solution while still a minimal headache... I need around 10TB for the foreseeable future (right now around 5, but I'm guessing 5 more since I started doing more video work) Now from what I've seen most of the Prebuilt stuff aren't expandable and unless you are going for 2 drives they get fairly expensive. So my question is, is building my own NAS worth the hassle to save the money, or just fork over the cash and be done with it? Now to be honest I'm really rusty to building my own stuff. I'm after 7 years using a mac and before that, I mostly used prebuilt PCs. I did jump back into the game with my return to PCs (I built my own Hackintosh recently)
  9. So the idea is, I have a MacPro 13 2014 and its trackpad has gone mushy. BUT can I put in the new Force Touch trackpad from the 2015 model into the 2014 mac or will it not be compatible. Please tell me if this is practical or not really possible my normal means. (no Linus geto hacksawing here)
  10. Ups wants?

Hi all and merry Christmas, I have go a 100ah telecom backup battery that I have acquired from someone from work. And I was wondering if I could get a module to put on it to use as a ups for my pc I hope you can help, Vincent
  11. Hi, I am planning on building a NAS over the holiday break to expand my storage space, increase my redundancies, and allow for better media access throughout my home. So, my first question would be the case recommendations. I will need 4 3.5 in drive bays. It would be nice but not necessary for them to be hotswapable. I will need a standard form form factor for the motherboard, but otherwise I won't need the case to do or be anything fancy. Any recommendations from here? Mods, feel free to move this to the NAS section if needed.
  12. Advice?

Hello, I am going to cut to the chase even though everyone is probably tired of getting these types of questions. I have a 5.1 system consisting of: 2 RCA SP2700Ts ('Full range' tower speakers from the 90's) 2 Polk T50's (Rear satellites) 1 Polk CS10 (Center) 1 Bic Acoustech PL-200 (Sub) The question is as follows. I have a $300 budget give or take some wiggle room. and I am debating about a nice pair of bookshelf speakers or retrofitting my RCA towers fully by using drivers from Parts Express. I do not know if towers are the way to go or if bookshelves. I guess I have never experienced 'True' audiophile speakers so I could not say myself what is the better purchase decision. I mostly use my system to watch movies and the listening space is a large room but has a lot of dampening from the bookshelves and other things in the room.
  13. Hi, So, I'm building a custom computer setup and custom desk. as part of it, I would like to be able to plug my old ipod classic into a custom dock (really just a cable) and charge it as well as play music directly from the ipod. I will have desktop speakers plugged into the computer, they may not have a dedicated USB input. So my questions are: 1. Is there a way to dock the ipod so it charges and plays simultaneously (is there a DIY way to build a dock like this) 2. Is there a way to connect this to the computer or the speakers so that it directly feeds audio to the speakers so music is controlled solely from the iPod. Also, Is there a way do ALL the above via the 30 pin connector only? I would like to avoid using the Aux (the aux output is ontop of the ipod and this may aesthetically ruin the docking look i'm ting to go for)
  14. I have a RFID-RC522 hooked up to an Arduino so I can read RFID tags. I would like to be able to use the NFC in my iPhone to be read by the reader and have it do something based on the programming. Is this possible or do I need to get a NFC reader? Apple has the API released to use the NFC in an iPhone called Core NFC so I should be able to code the NFC on my phone.
  15. Hello , very new around here , there is this video i came across today , some guy used cpu cooler one of those big stuff from noctua to cool a 980ti it worked but , he didn't overclock it or did anything more with it . My question is ,would this metod be effective on a new gen card and how much ?
  16. Is it possible? I recently had the Idea from various videos about productivity peripherals. What If I could get an rotary encoder from an old mouse or sound system and wire it to an arduino (I have limited knowledge of coding in arduinos) so that it acts like a mouse wheel and then interface it to autohotkey such that I can reprogram it to do other stuff.
  17. So I just got into building electronics and I have a raspberry pi and I want to connect a small screen to it to make it portable. Now I don't have any money because I'm in high school and don't have a job so I took an lcd from an old camera. The camera was the Vivitar DVR 410. It has an sd card reader, Usb, Camera lens and lcd screen. Is there a way to connect the lcd to the raspberry pi? And is there anything I can use the components for? Is there a way to connect the camera module to the raspberry pi as well? Thanks in advance

  19. So I've desidet that the old head unit in my Suzuki Swift 1,5L form 08, needs a major update. I've hoped that there was some great AIO solutions on the markedet, but I must admit I was very disapointed to learn that most of the things on the markedet where crap, or expensive and did not forfill my needs. SO I turned to youtube, and found som great DIY videos, that has inspired my for for my build - but I would really uses some help, to find the best parts and maybe geet some tips/feedback on the build?https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B0nlnXljWg2E7f_I0qffiM...In the link you can see my overall blueprint for the build. 1. I want to start with an 10.1" or 12" android tablet with 4g - something that easy to use and that I can get cheap, maybe a used Denver tablet or an used samsung galaxy tab A. I'll route the device and install another OS, made for cars. 2. After rooting I'll connect the tablet to a OTG cabel and that one to an USB hub. 3. The USB hub will talk to the DAC (4), rear usb camera (8), steering wheel control board4. the DAC will take the digital signal and convert it into an analog signal, that will go into 5.5. An 4 way amb eighter with 2 X aux input (10 + 11) or 1 X aux input and bluetooth build in, so if I want I can stream from my phone. The other aux will be used as an input for an external lapel mic (10)6. the amp will then send the audio on to my 4 X 50 W car speakers7. An USB plug inside the dashboard will be used to power the DAC, and tablet.8. I need a rear camera / something with build in infered light for the nights9. an programmabel motherboard for remapping and converting the signal from the steerings wheel controlers so i can be used on the tablet. 10. I want a lapel mic, because the are small and often pretty good and cheap + easy on the eyes in the car11. I need someking of bluetooth device that can send a signal into the the amp - if I cant find an amp with bluetooth ***OPTIONAL***12. The speakers and amp + usb charger will be charged by the standard car battery. What do your guys thing - it it duable? got any tips/tricks/feedbackYoutube videos for referances:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtsy24Z4l9oQmaHQ...
  20. Heylo fellow nerds! So, i've been looking at building a custom desk and an uber cool room. so i spent yesterday teaching myself arduino and circuitry and stuff. basically im building a desk computer, what i want to do is build a cool palm scanner (ideally a cool looking palm scanner but i will settle for a fingerprint scanner :'( ). The crux is that your system only turns on if the bio-metrics are a match. there will be no hardware button to turn on the PC (well maybe a hidden fail safe). Therefore my questions: 1. Is there an arduino compatible palm scanner out there? or can i re-jig a regular one to work with arduino? (same applies for fingerprint sensor, can I re-jib a usb sensor to work with arduino) 2. will the arduino be able to start the computer like that? 3. Can i also turn this into a system unlock mechanism instead of a regular password ( will keep the manual password as a backup) so i can unlock my system? (i am asking because as far as i know, windows doesn't accept any bio-metric inputs so don't know if i can use it specifically as a system password) Thanks in advance
  21. Hi LTT Community, I got this idea of using Old Server hardware that one can buy on eBay to build my own NAS. I saw the video on the LTT channel from 3 weeks ago where Linus builds a computer from an Old Server motherboard and used 4 CPUs. I want to do something like that. I might not need 4 CPUs for a NAS. Also, I would want to be able to fit it into a Server Rack Mount Case. Any my help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  22. Building a mechanical keyboard?

I've seen some videos about building mechanical keyboards, and i thought it would be fun to build one. Im not really into it so i'd like to know if it is worth it. How much would it cost me (more or less, dont need a DIY K95 xD)?
  23. Good day, I'm planning to build a desk PC like the one Linus did but with different specs. so far I have no parts bought. I'm starting at zero. I need a recommendation from you guys what to buy. I'm an architecture student, frequently doing some heavy renders, using V-ray, Rhinoceros and Lumion. Also a gamer, when I have some free time. Since Lumion is based on GPU a lot, 1080 TI is must, but I don't know which one is better, there are so many... and I think I would need at least 8 core CPU cause V-ray uses CPU a lot. Also which power supply would I need, wattage, RAM, motherboard, water cooling would be nice too. No preference between AMD and Intel. and the budget is about 2000$ (budget can be raised if needed. not too much tho...) Thanks!
  24. SWAPPING PSUs

Ok, in theory i can just swap my EVGA 850W GQ 80 Plus Gold Power Supply for a Thermaltake 850 gold RGB but do I need to find a header for the RGB I haven't as of yet opened the box so I don't know if there is a 4 pin for the RGB BUT I am assuming there will be, i have the prime x299deluxe so I don't anticipate there being a lack of RGB headers
