Greetings! Last year, I decided that I was healthy enough to try a project I've wanted to do for years. Build my own NAS as I had almost all the parts needed. So, after buying five 6TB drives for the backup part of my project, I put it all together. I've got a 120 GB drive for the operating system, 16 gigs of ram, Intel I7-2600K 3.4Ghz cpu. The motherboard is an Asus Sabretooth P67. And case that I was able to stuff it all into. So I built it and installed Ubuntu on it. I had shine fun learning about Linux as I'd never used it before this project. Then my health tanked. I've got a degenerative nervous system disease like MS, which sidelined me for quite a while, and then I had a lot more important things to catch up on until now. So I'm asking for help on bent knee!! Issue 1- I struggled with the drives, as the single 120gb and three of the 6Tb drives showed up as internal drives, but two of the 6Tb drives stayed as removable drives I've seen some articles that I followed over and over again to do some software changes without success. ?????So the questions I have with that are ???? 1) Is it possible that where I've plugged the sata cables in is causing the "removable drive" problem? 2) What distro would you suggest that i start with to build this? I like messing around with distros, but i don't have enough knowledge to choose a good, stable base for my NAS. 3) What software do you suggest i use to build the NAS part? I want to be able to store and access our photos, music, and movies. I would love to be able to access them throughout the house and, if possible, over the internet. [ I have this computer wired to a switch, and my main computer is, as well. My wife's computer is also connected with ethernet cables, but we also have tablets and TVs that i'd like to connect to the NAS through wifi.] ( Please do not tell me that this isn't enough to save my photos, I know, this isn't the only place they will be stored, but i want 1 spot my poor wife can go to find her old pictures. Everyone we know comes to her when they need pictures of them through time. My wife had been our congregations paparazzi for over 20 years. ) EDIT After looking at the user manual I see that this mobo can do raid in the BIOS, i have no idea which is better, but i wanted to give that information! -
I first used Kubuntu but it stopped booting, then I used KDE Neon which worked fine for a while but the Nvidia drivers broke and it later also stopped booting twice. Is this common or have I just been unlucky? If so which distro should I choose? (Prefereably something mainstream with KDE). I know you guys probably want to see the logs but the installs have already been wiped because I needed to use the computer for school. I also have tried to fix it with people from Reddit and some people I know irl and only managed to fix it once. I have been using the non-LTS version of Kubuntu and KDE Neon, should I try it again with the LTS version? -

Felt like sharing this video(not mine!) on the topic of tech and green activism as whole. I feel like this is very important discussion among us enthusiasts and others who have desktop or even laptop for that matter. Precisely when it comes to reducing the e-waste and repurposing old desktops or old laptops. Very curious to know your opinions on this, because I personally think we should this kind of discussions on things like this that have massive amounts of impact on things we care about. P.S. I do also hope if Linus picks up on this and makes a discussion video about this topic. -

Hi, one old laptop I was using just had a hard drive failure. I don't really want to bother (trying to) open the computer and see if I can change the drive. I know the laptop is still working since it can still boot Batocera from a SD card. What Linux distro, if any, would you recommend for boot & use from an external USB hard drive, USB key or SD card? By the way, the laptop comes with a dual core i3, 8GB of ram and a touchscreen (said screen being the main reason I don't want to get rid of it yet) and is mainly used for education, YouTube and some games with my daughter. I am really intrested about linux nowadays. I want to move from windows 10 but dunno which one to go for. I have asus n550jv cn240-h but i replaced my 1TB hdd with samsung 850 evo 250GB ssd so i am looking for something compatibale, in the sametime with minimum bloatware in modern, clean and miniamlistic look with lightweight on hardware side. And because of having 250GB storage space i am looking for something don't uses as much as windows does. How less GB that much better. I am gaming heavily and i am not experienced about linux but i have some experience on android side. And i am really into research. But if it would be really complex i may give up because of complexity. And it should be stable cuz i gonna use it as my daily driver.

Hi, I am new to the Linux scene and I don't know many distros. Here is what I want to do: Setup multiple VMs for different services. For Example: OwnCloud, Plex, Apache... Now i am not sure what distro to use. I dont mind installing packages but I dont want to start basically from scratch. Core functionalities should be installed. My priorites are (in this order - Security - Ease of use - Resource Efficency Thank you all in advance!

Hey there. Got an old Asus Eee PC Netbook (pretty sure the model is 1001PX-BBK301, not 100% positive though) that I want to squeeze some more life from before replacing it. Do you guys have any recommendations for distros that would be right for older and/or slower hardware? I know there are some other Ubuntu flavors geared towards old hardware, but I'm not experienced with them enough to know which may be the right choice for me. Inside is an Intel Atom N450, 2GB of DDR2, and a 160GB HDD. Thanks! -
Hey guys, I want to make the switch to Linux I have been using it for about a year on a VM when I can for random stuff. I want to run it on hardware now. I want to duel boot windows 10 and a distro that i haven't picked quite yet. i have been running Ubuntu Gnone for about a year, but i am not sure about it maybe a different desktop. I am learning programming currently working on C++ and java in college and want to learn many more languages. but i have a few question about Linux before i make duel boot. i understand it will not be the most stable thing in the word, but i want to duel boot on different hard drives so i can keep windows bootload is it more stable to run windows in UTC time or linux in local time? Is there any programming languages that do not work on Linux? what IDE's are recommended for C++ and Java? What is a good desktop for muit-monitor setups, are there drivers for a gtx 970? how large of a swap do i need what does it do?' if anything i said makes no seance let me know i will explain or any additional information and thanks for the help. also any beginner guilds to Linux on YouTube that would be great.

I've recently attempted to install Debian Jessie, Debian Stretch RC2, Manjaro 17 KDE, and Ubuntu Mate 16.10 (all amd64 builds), and I have had mixed results. Sometimes the NVMe (Intel 600p) volumes are not detected, and other times the Intel 1219-V Gigabit Ethernet Controller isn't detected. I've even tried temporarily using a USB WiFi dongle to download appropriate drivers, or loading them from tarballs directly from Intel's website over a USB drive, yet they have so many dependencies, I cannot install them AT ALL. So, my question is... Has anyone been able to easily install ANY Linux distro on their Maximus Hero IX? I would really prefer to have a Debian-based distro installed as my host OS, and not Windows 10. Thanks in advance everyone! -
I recently installed Ubuntu and i am enjoying it, however, there is one really annoying thing about it. This is that whenever i try to download a game on Steam or just browse the web it is really slow. My Steam downloads usually start off at around 2 MB/s and then go down to 500KB/s. I have tried disabling IPV6 and it still has done nothing. Has anyone got a proper solution to this? -
Hello, some months ago i gave up in a battle trying to get a stable linux installation on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 3451 - Intel Pentium n3540 baytrail, 4gb ddr3 and intel hd graphics). The problem is with baytrail processors and the kernel Linux, many things as the "c state bug", which is about a complete freeze after random time using the computer, no keyboard/touchpad and peripherals working after suspension, and other problems related. Depending on linux distro maybe only one problem of those I mentioned happened. Ubuntu - c state bug and other problem i don't remember, Linux Mint - no keyboard/touch..... , and the same problems happen in other distros, I couldn't find one distro with no problems on my laptop (Windows 10 works without issue, but i don't want Windows on this laptop, it's slow). I tried Ubuntu 12.04.5, 16.04.2, 17.04, Linux Mint 13, 17, 18.1, Fedora lastest ver., Manjaro lastest ver., antergos lastest, elementary lastest.... C state bug can be solved by modifying a file, but it wasn't the only problem on those distros. Ubuntu 12.04.5 was the one with less problems, (maybe because of not lastest linux kernel version on it). The problems was I couldn't change brightness ( I tried a thousand solutions here and there, belive me). However i'm not a huge fan of ubuntu, but thought it could be a good try on my system. I'd like to use a simple xfce distribution, but have no luck on finding one stable on my system. So the question is, is there anyone using a stable ditro on a baytrail cpu? Thank you buddies. -
So Kubuntu is not storing WiFi passwords at all. I have no idea why! Some sites say to enable the wallet. Others say to change the network manager (which doesn't seem to be on my Linux distro) and it's just confusing the shit out of me. Can someone please help, I'm getting irritated by Linux and KDE. The laptop specs are as followed: Core i5-2450M Intel HD Graphics 3000 1 TB WD Blue HDD 6GB of RAM (5.9 Available) Intel Celeron WiFi card Theirs only one partition on the HDD and that's the Kubuntu partition. PS: I used to have Ubuntu, I accidentally killed it, then I installed KDE Neon, but it was acting weird so now I'm trying Kubuntu. -
Is there any reason to have more than 1 linux distro on a single computer? I'm curious since DE's seem to be able to be placed on any distro. And yes I know theirs Fedora and it's different from Debian. Is there any reason to dual boot more than 1 linux distro?

I'm looking to install some form of media center software on an old laptop I have (it still runs windows 10 fine) but I was not at all happy with osmc on a raspberry pi. The apps for youtube and amazon video were absolutely awful (poor interfaces and youtube didn't even show thumbnails). What I'm looking for is different media center that can run youtube and amazon video. Being able to mount an smb share and access files off of my nas would be a plus but not a requirement. Perhaps openelec? Also, I'd like to be able to use the windows key on a different computer, as OEM keys are no longer locked to hardware iirc, though I'd have to install windows again to even find it.

Hi everyone, I work with some websites locally, where I try things out before putting the changes online (a couple Wordpress and a prestashop). I used Mamp on my Mac machine or Xamp on my old windows to launch a local web server but since lately my Mac isn't in a good shape and I had to reset my windows machine more than once in the last 6 months I thought that using a virtual machine as a local web server would be easier for backup/moving it and wouldn't require much resources. I tried using ubuntu server, Manjaro and Debian, but I get lost in all the commands to install and start the various services or when I finally get something working I can't access the web server folder cause I don't have permissions or something. I followed guides and tutorials but still can't get it to work. Never used linux and I have basically zero knowledge of how these services works (ports, versions, etc) as well of how linux handles tasks, services and permissions. I'm looking (if it exists) for a distro and/or an app like Mamp or Xamp that handles installation, configuration and permission for me through an interface. Basically a one click setup of the web server with a folder and a phpMyAdmin, do u know of one? This is something I do at a hobby level beside work and unfortunately I don't have much time/money to invest in it. Thank u everyone

Hey so I got myself a pi zero. I have some light programs I made, mainly for data collection, which also serve as a server to a few of my apps. All I really need is an OS that implements the c posix library, and can be configured to connect to wifi without much hassle. All I really want it for is to run my programs, which only use storage and sockets, anything else is redundant. Thank you. -
Hey guys, so as the title hints - I want to install a Linux distribution on a flash drive for various reasons and I'm looking for the optimal way of doing it. However, I want some feedback on this quite popular project (does it work ok, ia it too laggy, glitchy and what kind of a flash drive should I aim for). Which distro would run the best on a thumb drive? I've used Ubuntu and Mint before but I don't mind trying others. So far I believe I would need a usb 3.0 instead of a 2.0, not only to boot faster but also to run faster and hopefully not get a lot of stuttering. Also I believe a 64gb one would be recommended if I want to install some things and increase its usebility. Am I missing something? Any special notes to take? Any other recommendations? If you got any other tips on this, please share. Thanks in advance! -
Um... I have an old MacBook Pro (5,1) (A1286), Intel C2Duo (2.66 GHz), 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, GeForce 9400M, 9600GT. Since MacOS got super slow, I installed Ubuntu and have been using it (owing to familiarity from my previous school's smartboard). I have been browsing for Linux distros, and really liked Elementary OS. But I have minimal experience in Linux distro installations... So, does it do driver installation automatically (like ubuntu?). Also, I read it's also debian based like Ubuntu, so all the Ubuntu terminal commands will work, right? (Y'know, like sudo apt install tuxpaint etc.) Please help! Tagging @GabenJr as I admire his work in Linux videos!

Hi everyone, here comes a probably odd question. I have the need to keep a local mirror of Debian 10 repositories on my hard drive. Due to internet access difficulties and various reasons using the repos out off the internet it’s not an option for me. I managed to mirror the official Repos with debmirror easily but now my question is this: How is it better to keep all of this files on my HHD? The repository it’s about 150Gb and it is made of lots of small files as you might already know. So is it ok for my Hdd to have all of this files there or would it be better to keep them somehow in an big file that contains it all like an .iso, .img or .dng? I’m wandering about this because I don’t want my hard drive to be more prone to fail (it’s already an old drive with more that 5 years of use) and to buy a hard drive in my country right now it’s very expensive so not an option. I would appreciate your help, thanks in advance. -
Ever since I heard of the new BonoboWS laptop from System76, which boasts up to three 8TB NVMe drives, I got pretty excited about what I could do with it if I could afford it. I wanted a powerful laptop that could house a whole ton of operating systems to boot from - mostly for the novelty of it. I don't need a whole lot of space for each one, just between 64 and 128GB for each distro and I find, in my experience with Linux so far, I don't need any more than that. As for personal files and assets for productivity, they can go in the spare SATA SSD. With about 24TB of NVMe space, I began brainstorming what distros I'd like to stuff in there including Windows. Pop_OS!, QubesOS, Kali Linux, Devuan, Void, HardenedBSD, etc, etc. Some simple OSs for productivity and gaming and other more hardened, secure and privacy-oriented distros for proper online activities. So I wonder, if you had anywhere this much storage space in your computer, what distros would you cram in there?
