So first let me establish a couple things: I'm for physical media and like Luke said during WAN show once "real physical media, not just discs disguised as digital download codes". The title could be a tad click baitey as I'm not sure if it is truly accepted on PC, but feel like its been much more accepted, at least from my perspective as someone who actually returned to consoles for the physical media after being a PC gamer for quite a while. I'm not defending digital only, its good for some, but I don't want it to be the only standard, just pointing out an oddity that I've noticed and could be entirely wrong about, hence why I'm asking the community. So in my perspective it seems that Steam and Blizzard being digital only have been wildly accepted as just natural and I can't remember anyone ever really blinking an eye or raising an eye brow at the topic. PC was all digital and console was not. However as modern consoles have begun to switch to digital I've seen a flurry of discussions about media preservation, proper ownership, games being taken away after the fact (thanks Ubisoft) and loss of access due to down servers whether they're for the game or the platform you purchased them on. Those discussion points are great and I want them pushed further as I want physical media to stay permanently, but it feels like it's really only being and only has been directed at the consoles. Perhaps these discussions did take place as physical media for PC gaming began to drop off and I was just too young or not in the scene when it was occurring, but if we're going to have these discussions about media, ownership and online services, should we not have it about ALL forms of media on ALL platforms? How come streaming movies, music and downloading games on PC have seemingly been accepted but we draw the line at consoles. Should the line not be where any possibility of the removal of perpetual ownership of a piece of media is concerned? Perhaps I'm just becoming the old lady screaming at the clouds. lol Would love to know your thoughts on the subject and any information I might be missing. Also just for good measure, f### Ubisoft. lol

I heard about the refreshed Xbox Series X on GameLinked as thats where I get all of my gaming news. lol But as you can deduce from the title, I'm a bit disappointed that it's digital only. I understand that discs for modern consoles act simply as glorified download codes, but like I want my wall of plastic cases! XD So I was pondering if this is actually a bad thing though. There is the concern of ownership for certain, but like maybe this isn't a bad thing? Steamdeck is digital only and the PC space has effectively been digital only for years now. Has the time come? Am I old now? Is it just an old woman yelling at the sun when I say I want and will continue for as long as possible to purchase physical media regardless? lol Though I was curious as to people's thoughts on the subject manner. Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing? Also is Riley really that white? Him and I might have something in common after all! XD

If i put this in the Wrong Topic Please no hate just tell me, lol Hello, I've had my Blue Spark Digital For a long time now 3-4 years. I've unplugged the mic and replugged it and *Poof* Stopped working, so i looked into it and the pins where bent, so i tried to repair it had no luck.. contacted blue for a new cable and they said they don't have any because it has not been in production for a while now, so no replacement cable. So i came on the idea to just hardwire / solder a normal usb cable to the internals of the Mic, it would maybe be an inconvenience but I'm okay with it and don't have the money to buy a new mic, and the sound quality it still really good. But the ONLY problem is, i don't know where i should solder the Power + / Power - / and Both Data Cables. So i came here with a hope to get some help. I attached Pictures of the inside of the mic, If anyone could help and need more info / pics just tell me. Thank you in advance.

Foot pedals being amazing for simple stuff like push-to-talk, leaves me wanting something of a high quality. From what I can tell, the only player in the market of key press simulation is https://pcsensor.com who do “drop shipping” under various names. As for analogue, there are a few “gaming” racing pedals to choose from. However it would be required to somehow translate the specific axis’ data into either a keyDown event and keyUp event, or a keyHeld event. I have previously tried 2 variants from PC Sensor, both with their own advantages and disadvantages. However I have no idea what the response time would be compared to using a “gaming” racing pedal setup set to trigger a key press. * Question 1: response time? * Question 2: analogue to key press Does anyone have some insight into either of these questions?

Hello Everyone! I am looking to buy a new internal hard drive to store my music, game, movie library and I found a really good deal on an Ultrastar hard drive. The thing is that these drives are marketed as data center drives which confused me since they have similar specs to the gold and red series. Price-wise, the Ultrastar is the cheapest, then it's the gold one which costs 25€ more and then the red which costs 50€ more (compared to the ultrastar). The Ultrastar and the gold one also have 512mb cache as opposed to the red one which has 256mb which is strange because the red is the most expensive one on the list... Does anyone know the difference between the Ultrastars, gold and red drives and which ones are the best reliability-wise and for my use-case? Thank you in advance

Hello. I have a setup with one Intel Nuc where I have Linux and a desktop computer with Windows 10. I'm currently using wireless headphones (SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless) connected to the Windows machine (over a USB coming from their receptor). I get a enough audio quality this way with some kind of 5.1 emulation from the Windows computer. Now, the Nuc doesn't have a proper audio output, just the HDMI connection that I could maybe split and pass the audio to other place, but I don't know how I could input that digital audio signal to my Windows machine to mix it with the audio coming from it, so both PCs could output audio to my wireless headphones. Right now I'm using a USB to Jack adapter on the Nuc and running a cable to the Windows PC line-in, but the audio is just awful. Is low volume, cracks everytime a loud sound plays and have a decent amount of white noise. I've been looking for a while for some way to transfer the digital signal directly (5.1) from the Nuc, but no idea how to receive it and be able to mix it on Windows. I also used for a while VBAN on Linux to send the audio over network to the Windows machine where I received the signal with VBAN Receptor, but latency and CPU usage on the emitter side made it unsustainable. Any idea on a way to archive this? Thanks!

Hello, I am wondering what would be the best SSD for game storage, I already have a 1TB m.2 SN550 as a boot drive and storage for now and will be buying the samsung gen4 pcie SSD as the new boot drive whenever that is out which will take up all the m.2 slots on my x570 tomahawk. So in the meantime I am wondering what is the fastest 2TB or bigger SSD that is reasonable for a game drive? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks EDIT: I was thinking about the MX500 or the WD Blue

I would like to submit the chartering of a new group of earthly wonders: The Seven Wonders of the Digital World! This is an idea that I've had in my mind and think it would be really cool to at least ponder and consider. I think that the Internet, and by extension, all computers, have given us the opportunity to create things with near infinite possiblities. Despite all the negative and cruel things that can happen in the virtual world, the Seven Wonders of the Digital World give us the opportunity to appreciate the good and edifying influences it can have on society, through sharing our personal experiences and goodwill with others. As such, rather than just hammer out a list with only my subjective input, I want everyone here to submit their own nominations to what they believe should be considered a wonder of the digital world worth cherishing. I'll start with a submission of my own: C To most people it might be just a letter but to those that have dipped their toes into the realm of computers it doesn't just represent part of a language, it is language. The C language and it's extension in C ++ is the bedrock over which much of the internet and popular programs exist today. Before web development tools and alternative languages existed, C language virtually created the known web (with help from a few other languages) in both senses of the word. Most games today run on engines designed on its C ++ extension and without it, the gaming landscape would almost certainly look radically differnt to today. There may be a time when C language becomes obsolete but regardless of when it goes quietly into the twilight, for better or worse, the impact it has had on all things electronic has left and will continue to leave a strong legacy behind it. With that, I want to hear what you consider to be a wonder of the digital world and why. If your just here to contribute or just lurk around, I wish you all a terrific day and many digital blessings! Cheers! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ (◕ω◕✿)

Researchers have warned that we will be more easily forget the information we can get from our cell phones, such as the important numbers of our family, a person's address or even important dates. Scientists say, Digital Amnesia is the result of adaptation of our brain where information can easily get as mobile phones and the Internet are always available and easily accessible. Security firm Kaspersky Lab said "The connected device did help our daily lives, but they also lead to the emergence of Digital Amnesia in our brain. ' As a consumer, it is important for us all to understand the long term implications of this effect, and why we need to be diligent in view of the information and protect memories and our precious memories. Kaspersky Lab conducted a study of 1,000 consumers in the United States consisting of age 16 years and over and found signs of Digital Amnesia found in all age groups and both men and women equal. The survey resulted that 91 percent of consumers recognize their dependence on the internet and smartphones as a means to store information or retrieve information and become a kind of additional memory of their brains. These findings also indicate that our inability to save important information is due to the fact that we hand over responsibility to remember to a digital device. Almost half (44%) of survey participants said that their smartphones to store almost everything they needed to know or recall. It is not surprising that the research conducted by Kaspersky Lab also found that the loss or compromise of data stored on digital devices and smartphone in particular, will make many users overwhelmed. More than half (51%) of female respondents and nearly the same amount of users aged 25 to 34 years (49%) will be overwhelmed with grief that hit because they have memories stored on their devices they believe memories will not return when the device is damaged or missing. A quarter of female respondents and 35% of respondents of young people (16-24) will panic: the device they are the only place where they store pictures and contact information. Source : Kliknklik Tech Blog Very scary .... what do you think about digital amnesia ?

I bought this cheap Chinese capture converter and the problem with it is that it's losing me a lot of frames (~10% of footage) and the audio captured is of terrible quality. The tapes are not damaged and are in good condition, plays perfectly on tv. I tried using many different capture software like virtualdub, virtual vcr, software that came in the disk, etc.. Same results. Do you guys know a better hardware solution? I really need highest quality possible.

Sorry I don't know what forum to post this question to or if Linustechtips is even the right place to ask, but any help would be appreciated. I've been looking for a good point and shoot camera for $450 CAD maximum. I recently bought a Canon Powershot SX720HS. I've noticed that the focus does not set properly on faces and instead prefers the background. And am also not happy with the yellowish flash it has. I was hoping there could be other options in my price range I could look at soon so I can return the one I have. Also I am not an advanced camera user. The best camera on Auto is what I'm looking for as it will be used by my parents as well. Any help would be great. And if LinusTechTips forums aren't the right place for these questions, I'd appreciate if someone could link me to another forum where it would be. Thank you in advance Edit: I do not want a big camera. I have an older DSLR already but I was looking for something small for travel and parties or events. As for features: I believe anything with 20x or more zoom will be great for me. Low light I think is one of the biggest for me. During the day most phones do the job pretty well. Preferably something with an easy way to pick my focal point or do a good job at automatically picking it. A good display to view my images. A rotating one not necessary but if I can get it that'd be awesome Wifi not necessary since i will be using an SD card That's all I can come up with at the time

Hello. I bought Lamptron CM430 yesterday. And today it lies blown up next to my PC. Are there any good quality fan controller which actually don't have cables with contacts popping out of connector after connecting fan, causing shortage and blowing out device? And ones that don't have terrible cold joints on PCB and almost soldered together accidentally pins? And maybe ANY short circuit protection AT ALL? Oh almost forgot about dent fan connector on PCB sticking out under like 60 degree instead of 90... Jesus Christ this thing felt like cheap toy soldered by poor Chinese kid on rice shortage... I tested it on separate PSU and fans because I was afraid it's gonna blow out whole PC. I need thermal sensors support and It'd be nice to have hot-plug capability as I need to connect it to 24/7 running server and I'd like to connect it without shutting down whole thing.

I am thinking of getting aftermarket RGB strips for my case and desk. So, just wondering. If the RGB header on the AUS Z270 motherboards work with addressable/digital RGB strips. as in, if I go on the 'rainbow mode' will each individual led be a different colour? Or do i have to go out and spend an extra £20 for a strip that is 3x shorter and has its own controller and software? This is the kit im getting: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5M-Dream-Color-6803-IC-Chip-5050-RGB-LED-Strip-133-Effects-RF-Controller-New-/401115204488?hash=item5d64544b88:g:kTYAAOSwRgJXluFF Before you say: 'that is way too long.' I'm going to use this one strip for my desk and pc, it has 2 connections on either side. i just need to cut it to length.

Hey! I've been playing good old nfs most wanted online recently and came across an interesting finding. One player claimed that his keyboards' key presses work similar to how analog joysticks on game controllers work. In other words, he claims that he can adjust the exact rate of rpm by pressing harder or lighter on "up" arrow key and car only turns depending on the force he applies onto the left/right keys. I know it makes lot of confusion since I've been using quite a variety of keyboards and went thru most of the high end offerings to date by top accessory makers but never found a single product that has the similar functionality advertised. I'm just curious to know if such products really exist. Please share your thoughts bellow. Thanks. **EDIT** Additionally I've realized that the controllers are a better choice over keyboard for driving/racing titles. Which device do you personally prefer to play such games for casual/semi-pro gamer? Feel free to list some as well. (never tried a controllers on pc. how is the compatibility?)

I'm trying to digitize an entire box of VHS tapes, but I'd like to have as little quality loss as possible. So far, I've converted ~8 hours using an Elgato cable, using horribly glitchy free software (Elgato's proprietary software didn't detect my cable), and it doesn't work properly with Windows 10, plus the quality is kinda trash (pink lines/flares permanently staining the image), but I'm not salty, considering I paid less than $100 for this cable. I'm wondering what the best way is. I find it hard to imagine that these Elgato-esque cables (which are, in my opinion, overpriced junk) are the go-to solution for the generations of people who want to digitally store their VHS footage.
