Hey everyone! Just bought a 4790k to replace my 4670k and thought I'd tell you guys about a weird issue that popped after installing it. So I made sure that my z87 board was on a supported bios firmware which it was already on the newest 1603 before I purchased the CPU, a few day later it came and I was excited to install it. After installing it my PC it wouldn't post, So I call up ASUS and they are pretty much useless they tell me the cpu is probably DOA and that I should return it for a new one, So after thanking them I hang up and after some quick googling I found quite a few other people that had this issue in the past. After reading through a lot of these posts with a lot of them having no conclusions I found one that spoke of after installing the bios update with the "ASUS BIOS updater for New 4th Gen Intel Core Processors" Tool rather then using one of the other 2 methods (EZ update through AI Suite 3, and putting the bios on a usb stick and plugging it into the update usb port and pressing the update button) for updating your mobo's firmware that the computer posted as normal. This is where my trouble got even worse (just my luck right, how could it get any worse ). So I go to use the tool and it says this So at this point I'm getting pretty angry as I have the newest Intel MEI Drivers installed from ASUS Support Page for my board. So I google around some more and find that people said that after uninstalling Intel MEI and installing an older driver the Tool worked for them and that were able to get their PC up a running. So thinking to myself great I'll give that a try, and does that work hell no after "uninstalling" Intel MEI and trying to install an older one I get an error saying I have a newer version installed and that it cannot continue. At this point I'm so triggered I go make some food to cool down before I make the bad mistake to go the garage and get a sledgehammer to take to my PC. I come back refreshed and google some more and find that other people have had this issue where the driver would get stuck and be unable to be uninstalled and they had to format and do a fresh install of Windows. So I don't have a spare USB Stick laying around so I go downtown to buy a cheap 8gb one to put windows onto. Get home plug it into my PC's front usb 3 port and I get the windows doesn't recognize this device blah blah blah (typical error with an unsupported or broken usb device), at this point I'm all like "F*** right off are you serious? how can my day get any worse" So I pull it out and plug it into one of the usb ports on the back of my PC and it works there, weird, but ok better then having to drive back downtown in rush hour, yes that's right rush hour I didn't mention this earlier but I picked the CPU up from my post office at 11 am, So 7 hours later and this shit still isn't working. So I format reinstall windows, uninstall the Intel Mei drivers that come with windows 10 and install an older driver and finally the BIOS Updater is working. So I update the bios (to the same version that is already installed 1603) reboot and shutdown my PC reinstall the CPU (at this time I had the 4670k reinstalled and it was working as normal), Plug it in and it boots up perfectly. Seriously what a F***ing gonkshow. I'm baffled at this can anyone explain why this happened? I'm at a total loss here.

So I have an interesting problem. I built my PC 3 years ago. At the time of building i equipped my PC with 8GB or RAM and an i5 4690k. At a later date I upgraded to 16GB of RAM from klevv (llike its really good RAM at 2400MHz). However nowadays I need an i7 for running simulations and for battlefield 1. I seem to be getting fps drops in that and often when running simulations for businesses i experience hangs. I was gifted an MSI phantom laptop equpped with an i7 so I've been using that but I would like to use my pc for more than word proccessing and simple stuff. The problem I have is I need an i7 but should I: a) get an i7 4790k which is still priced at £300 in the UK for a new one or around £250 for a second hand one that I trust b) get an i7 6700k which is around £280 and will require me to buy a new mobo for around £90 (I'm looking at the Gigabyte GA z170 HD3 DDR3) with DDR3 support which will mean reduced features compared to my MSI z97 gaming 7. Or get one with DDR4 at a higher cost for new RAM as well c) get an i7 7700k which is £329 and a new mobo and new RAM also I'm running windows 8 and apparently kaby lake doesnt support that so.... I'll need windows 10 which is something I dont want. Like AT ALL options b) and and c) will cost more, but is more worth it in the long run. Also I have windows 10 on my laptop I HATE IT!!!! Also theres the issue of all of this extra hardware I'll have lying around. I still have the original 8GB of RAM that I replaced. I do want to build something like a media PC but thats nowhere in the near future

Hello, I am going to be upgrading my custom desktop PC soon and I wasn't sure if by leaving in some of my old parts I would be creating a bottleneck. I will be keeping my CPU (Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1150), RAM (Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB 2x8 240-Pin DDR3 2400 MHz), and Motherboard (ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA1150 Z97 Chipset). The component(s) of note that I plan to upgrade are my GPU and I plan to buy a non-reference GTX 1080 ti from either ASUS or EVGA. My goal is to have great gaming performance (high FPS) while running games at 1440p. Would this work? Thanks

Hey all, Here are the specs of my PC before I go into things: CPU: i5-4690k COOLER: CoolerMaster Hyper 212x RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600mhz GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1060 3GB MOBO: Asus Z97-PRO GAMER PSU: Antec VP700P Now, I used to use an i3-4160 with this configuration, bar obviously the CPU, but I recently decided to upgrade. I bought a used i5-4690k and I've been assured that the seller made sure that it was in working condition in his own rig. The problem is that I can't seem to get this CPU to post on my own hardware whatsoever. I've made sure that my BIOS is on the latest version that supports Devil's Canyon and I've tried it on two separate motherboards. Both give a solid DRAM LED when trying to boot and I can't understand as to why. When I place my older CPU into my two rigs, they post just fine. Anyone have a solution that could help me out?

Hi, ive been having a few problems with overclocking my new 4690k which I know overclocked past 4ghz with the previous owner, the problems I seem to face are explained below but if you have any questions feel free to ask them! Specs For Reference: CPU: 4690k Mobo: MSI Z97 Guard Pro GPU: R9 270x PSU: 650 Watts (Bronze Rated) Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32 and several 120mm Fans Storage: 240GB SanDisk SSD OS: Win 10 Anniversary update Problem: As I mentioned in the title the CPU won't overclock, or more specifically it won't allow me to enter cpu multipliers above 39 and anything that is above that just reverts to 39 when ever I "click out" of the box. This is a problem in BIOS (I have the latest BIOS) and in software such as MSI command centre or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. I would really aprieciate some help on this problem and I can do anything you suggest I try to solve this. Things I've tried: Overclocking in BIOS Overclocking in windows Disabling Turbo Boost Enabling Turbo Boost Overclocking just one core Thanks in advance for your help! Sam Included is an screenie of the intel tuning utility not offering above 39 multiplier

Looking at making an upgrade this week. I've had my AMD setup for about 2years now and its been great for gaming. That being said. Its been great for gaming only. I do video editing work and the AMD 8350 can't render and export as fast as I need it too or would like it too. So I've been eyeing a Devils Canyon setup, I'm pretty sold on the core. Wanting to know if keeping my RAM and upgrading the board will give me what I want, or if it will be worth it. I will be changing my GPU too for AE stuffs but that is later. Looking at this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128706 and this is the RAM I currently have. looking at adding an additional 16GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104363&cm_re=KHX16C9T3K2%2f16X-_-20-104-363-_-Product Let me know experience with this setup or suggestions for others.

I'm wondering whether it'd be worth spending the extra $30 for the unlocked core. I have an ASUS Z97-A motherboard, and a Hyper 212 cooler(I'm upgrading from a Pentium G3258). It'll mainly be used for things like Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, and some gaming if I have the time. I'm a bit on the fence as to whether or not I'd even want to overclock it when I first get it. Now, I've seen Linus's video comparing the overclocking power of the Pentium and the 4970K, but I just don't have the money to replace it if it gets fried in the process. Still, I plan on having this CPU for a long time - assuming it doesn't die on me for no reason - and it only makes sense that I'd want to overclock it eventually to give myself more power before I inevitably have to upgrade to Skyake or whatever architecture is out when I upgrade again.

I've been running with an i7 4770k since it came out and I've always had a modest but respectable 4ghz overclock on it. Is it worth it to upgrade anytime soon? I don't really use my rig for anything besides some gaming here and there (going to be a lot more of that thanks to Fallout 4). Will I start to see noticeable performance decreases because of this? I know there are people still running with the ancient 920s, so I'm hoping I can get another 2 or 3 years out of this one. Can I expect to do this and still game with respectable performance? This is assuming I upgrade my graphics card and other parts as time goes of course, which is still cheaper and easier than completely switching platforms.

Which is better? If the 6600K is better, how much better is Skylake?

I am buying a new pc. Is it worth to spend 150$ more on skylake i7 6700k package(MBO+RAM+CPU) than to go with i7 4790K for 130-150$ less?? That are the price situations here in Europe. We already pay premium for PC hardware, and can someone consider is it worth to spend more if I am using my pc for gaming with gtx 980? Haswell-E is 60-80$ cheaper , and also motherboards are bit cheaper(nothing much but another 30-40$ means to me since I am already crosing my desired budget), and you know DDR4 is more expensive. So my question is, will it be a good step to save another 150$ in month and go with skylake or simply stick with my 4790k plan. How much performance can i expect from skylake(note that skylake motherboard i am planing to use is more expensive, but the same class as the z97 motherboard from same company.) Somebody please help decide.

I am thinking of upgrading from my i7 3770k CPU/Motherboard build. I am just curious to know if all Z97 chipsets support i7 4790k out of the box? I am currently looking into upgrading my CPU to an i7 Devils Canyon 4790K to replace my i5 3570K. To do this I would need to replace my MB (ASRock B75 Pro..yes i scrubbed up when first building this i know it doesn't support OC now). Or should I keep the i5 3570K and just get a Z series board so that I can overclock it? Price wise the i7 + MB would be around $450 total. Is it worth upgrading to the 4790K? Or should i invest in a board and a new GPU? Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Hi everyone, I have some confusion about Devil's Canyon. I know for sure that 4790K is Devil's Canyon instead of Haswell, but what about 4790? I have that processor and I can't find anywhere online this information. Thanks in advance!

Based on this it seems intel is trying to be cheap when it comes to manufacturing these processors. http://www.anandtech.com/show/9505/skylake-cpu-package-analysis A very good comparison between the 6600k back to the 2500k along with the FX-8350.

So I was about to pull the trigger last night on the devil's canyon cpu with one of the gigabyte mobos that I saw was on sale, then I decided to wait until today too see if newegg put up any new sales pertinent to my tastes. Well, you can probably imagine my surprise when I woke up and saw that an entire new generation had been announced the next morning. This leads me to my question: I want to get a new mobo and cpu soon to upgrade from my terrible asrock and i3, and I also want the best thing I can get, so I was wondering which would be better, the haswell 4970K devils canyon, or the new whatever K skylake gpu. I really don't want to have to get rid of my ram and spend more money on more ram, but if the performance is worth it then I will do it. If I get the 6th gen cpu, I would have to upgrade to ddr4 or ddr3l, but regardless I would have to upgrade something I wasn't really counting on. I guess what I am asking is which is better for an upgrade right now, while keeping money in mind: the new one or the not so old one? I have a 7870 ghz edition that I don't care to update yet, its being bottlenecked as it is so I want to upgrade that after this. Please help I REALLY don't want to spend more than $500 Also will the Devil's canyon be cheaper once skylake is available for purchase?

Im working on bringing the voltage for my 4.7Ghz overclock down. my chips scaling so far: 4.5Ghz-1.185v core voltage 4.6Ghz-1.25v " 4.7Ghz-1.355v " As you can see i need a hugh pump on the core voltage to get over 4.6ghz. Things I already tried to get the core voltage down: 1.3v cache voltage at 3.0Ghz cache frequency Set RAM speed to 1333mhz Input Volage: 1.6v-2.1v nothing seemed to help so far. I welcome all ideas! PS: Sorry for my average english, im from germany.

Hello everyone, Apologies for the length but I assure you they are all relevant/technical details. (There is a TL;DR at the end…) I built my Z97/Devil’s Canyon PC roughly a year ago, and for the most part it ran very smoothly. My H320 had to be fixed but Swiftech got that done relatively... swiftly I’ve just been running things at stock ever since, save for two things in the BIOS: a custom fan curve and XMP profile for my DDR3-2133 memory. However, it should be noted that my 4790K always ran quite toasty considering my beefy cooler. Prime95 Small FFT averages 95 degrees, but I’ve since learned to stay away from this outdated favorite of mine. That being said, even AIDA 64 (CPU + Memory + FPU + Cache) averages 76 degrees with default settings pulling around 1.21v on the core. Ambient temps are only 18~20 Celsius and reapplication of thermal compound changed not a single degree. The Issue: Things worked fine until this past weekend, when I started getting instantaneous shutdowns followed by reboots. No BSOD, no freeze, and no slowdown; it happens as if power went out at my house. Today is day 4 since I caught the first crash, and the issue has escalated dramatically. The first evening I got a single crash followed by a successful reboot before I went to bed. The next day it happened a little earlier in the evening. Since last night I am consistently getting a crash every few minutes, and reboots are now failing. Crashes even happened when I was navigating the BIOS, so I doubt Windows or my drives have any part in this. Troubleshoot Attempt: Dial down memory – this came to mind immediately but did nothing; default (1333) and good old 1600 both crashes. Underclock CPU – I figured I might have failed the silicon lottery epically and gotten a really bad CPU that barely holds stock speeds to begin with. But lowering the multiplier from 44 to 43 still crashes. Check cables – I read about others getting this issue with loose cables, but I found none and this wouldn’t explain the escalation either way. Check pump – Pump failure would lead to overheating, but I can hear the pump humming/buzzing along when I bring my ears close enough to it. Check temperatures –AIDA 64 shows the usual temperatures and my PSU is barely warm to the touch. Ambient temperature are in the 22~24 Celsius range for the past few days; nothing compared to the 35 Celsius weeks earlier this summer. Clean filters – Dust buildup is negligible and cleaning them improved nothing. Windows log – All it says is something about “kernel-power”, which is apparently a very general error message that does not point to any single component? Motherboard error code – the MVII Formula has an on-board error code display, but it refreshes so fast it is impossible to read. Antivirus scan – Full scan with Kaspersky 2015 returned nothing of note. Reduce USB power draw – Swapping my rubber dome keyboard with a Corsair K70 three weeks ago apparently drew too much power that I can’t charge my phone at the same time (KVM connecting my K70, mice, and monitor gets cut off with a power exceeded message). But removing my controller, drive, phone, and turning off the K70’s LEDs did nothing to stop crashes. System Specs: Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D (included fans not used) Power Supply: EVGA Supernova 750 G2 w/ original cables Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Formula CPU: i7-4790K RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 2x8GB 2133 (CL11) Graphics: Asus ROG Matrix GTX 780 Ti SSD: Intel 730 Series 240GB HDD: WD Black 1TB WD1003FZEX CPU Cooling: Swiftech H320 (included fans not used) 120mm Fans (3, Radiator): Noctua industrialPPC NF-F12 2000 PWM 140mm Fans (2 Front & 1 Rear): Noctua industrialPPC NF-A14 2000 PWM TL;DR: My 1 year old PC ran "just fine" at default/stock settings for almost a year CPU always ran warmer than expected but never in danger of overheating Recently started instant shutdowns accompanied by near-immediate reboots As crashes became more frequent (from days to minutes apart) the reboots also started to fail, or it would crash again shortly after a successful reboot Did a bunch of troubleshooting to no avail
