So, my THICC-17 finally arrvied and they weren't kidding when they said THICC. Even though I was expecting it the first thing I noticed taking it out of the box was how massive it is, it's basically the same thickness as my Mech-17 sitting on ~3/4 inch stand made from legos I had it on. But who cares? If your buying a desktop replacement you probably couldn't care less about how big it is so lets start the actual review. External Port Selection Obviously one of the huge selling points for me was the port selection, it has just about everything. My only complaint it there is only 3 USB A ports (though they all run at 10gbps, there are 3 type Cs one of which is thunderbolt 3, one is 20gbps and one supports DP so...) 2.5Gb Ethernet is a nice touch but I currently don't have any 2.5Gb or WiFi6 stuff so it's not really in use for now... Internal Ports/Upgradability This is a HUGE reason why I bought this machine and I hope clevo doesn't let me down XD. For internal upgrades there are 4 SoDIMM slots (only 2 are populated on my 16GB config), there are also a total of 5 M.2 slots though 1 is for WiFi and 1 only accepts SATA drives, the other 3 all accept NVMe drives. My 1 complaint here is no 2.5" HDD but I can deal with it when there are spots to put 4 SSDs... As for the upgradability, the CPU and GPU are both upgradable with a full LGA 1200 socket and an MXM slot. This laptop should support 11th gen Rocket Lake CPUs with a simple BIOS update and hopefully Clevo with continue making MXM cards (though they are the last to be doing so I believe) for 30 series and beyond. What gives me hope is Clevo's previous machines like the P775 used the same chassis for multiple CPU and GPU generations allowing for easy upgrade kits that have new boards supporting the new Intel CPUs. Performance I went ahead and fired up Cinebench just to see how fast the 10900k could run with all 10 cores under full load... Turns out, not very fast. This is where my first issue started, I was expecting (from seeing other reviews and looking around that even the 10900k should be able to run at almost it's max turbo on all cores but for some reason I'm having a weird issue where instead of staying at turbo it goes up to the max turbo for ~1 second and immediately sits at base clock only pulling 90W (before undervolt, ~75W if I set -100mV). Idk exactly what's causing this and I'm still trying to figure out what is up. I also tried disabling the 'overclocking support' thing in the BIOS but that makes no difference. That being said, it's still not slow by any means. 10 cores and 3.7GHz is still impressive for a laptop considering the CPU sat around 80c. I've fixed the weird downclocking by installing Clevo Control Center and setting it to Performance mode, downside is running something like Cinebench has temps pinned at the high 90s however it's running at 4.7GHz all core! I'm still impressed, in lighter tasks it runs at up to 5.0GHz all core or 5.1GHz 2 core). As for the GPU (mine has a 200W 2080S MAX-P) I have basically no complaints, with +100MHz core and +800MHz mem (haven't actually dialed in anything yet, +150MHz crashed in 3dmark) the card sits at ~1900MHz and pulls all 200W of it's TDP while staying below 70c. Here are some benchmark results for Time Spy and Cinebench You can see towards the end of the Time Spy graphs what I'm talking about where it jumps between turbo and base clock constantly (though this was run with 5.0GHz all core set so it's probably temp related, those spikes were over 90c, I still don't know why it's not dialing it back normally and instead opting to just drop to base clock though...) OVERALL Initial impressions besides the weird CPU issue have been great, I don't care about the size and even having 2 power bricks is still not a huge deal to me. I'll continue to try and what I can get out of the 10900k. For anyone wondering why I didn't just go for a 10600k/10700k I got it from Eluktronics as theirs was anywhere from $500 to over $1200 less than competitors (even with lower specs) so it made sense just to get the higher end one for cheaper. I would love to see a full LTT video on this machine (there has been a shortcircuit and it's shown up a few times in videos but there's no full review yet).

Was doing research on gaming laptops to replace my desktop and I came across 2 that caught my eye. ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 - https://www.microcenter.com/product/647015/asus-rog-strix-scar-17-g733zw-xs96-173-gaming-laptop-computer-platinum-collection-black and MSI Raider GE77HX - https://www.microcenter.com/product/650219/msi-raider-ge77hx-12ugs-004-173-gaming-laptop-computer-grey Besides a bit of school work, I'll mainly be using it to game and stream. Do you think these 2 are solid choices for the price ? I haven't really seen too many reviews on both (mainly the raider). The only real concern I have is cooling and fan noise. Will a mic like the shure sm7b pick up the fan noise ? If there are any other laptops I should be looking at, please do let me know !

Looking for desktop replacement grade laptop.
Slurpy posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Ok, I'm looking for a desktop replacement grade laptop. It needs to have 32GB of ram, Raid 0 Nvme SSDs, and a GTX1080, w/ at least a Quad core i7. I do gaming(VR) and video editing in DaVinchi Resolve 14 but am planning on upgrading to premiere pro and AE. It needs to have 3 4k displays plugged in at the same time, along with a Vive. It also needs to have basic peripherals, a mic, a webcam, a capture card, and still have open USB 3.0 Ports. I can #DongleLyfe so IDC abt that. My Budget is Less than $3500USD. It needs to be decently quiet. I am currently looking at This. I would prefer if it had RGB keyboard backlighting and a Decent Display.- 16 replies

Ok, I am the type of guy who cant stand being w/o their files. When I go to a friend's house, I usually am w/o a good laptop. Also, I have to use my blade stealth with a core w/ a GTX 1060 3GB to push my games when at a LAN party. Also, I would like having my daily gaming rig rather than a separate PC for LAN parties. For my desk setup, would it be able to push 3 1080p 60Hz monitors? If not, what laptop would be good for me?

Clevo Custom Laptops What is a custom laptop? It is a laptop in which you have the ability to choose how much RAM to put, to choose between what SSD / HDD or different panels, cpus and gpus. It is also useful to be able to take a barebone without disks and license. What's Clevo? Clevo is a Taiwanese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) who designs and manufactures its products, gaming laptops or also high performance mobile workstations. Clevo also manufactures barebone cases for other OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and these OEMs fill these barebone cases with the necessary hardware. Most of the brands (Dell, Alienware, HP, Lenovo, Acer) use barebones made by ODM such as Quanta, Compal, Clevo and others. What's special? The use of desktop cpus on its products (N3xx, N6xx, W6xx, P7xx, P8xx) is a particular feature of this manufacturer, which also uses the MXM format gpus in the most powerful platforms (P7xx, P8xx). Other OEMs (Dell, Alienware, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Gigabyte, Aorus) use soldered cpu/gpu for their gaming laptops. (here more infos) Clevo does not market its products directly but it distributes them through a worldwide network of System Integrators and Resellers that rebrand them and customize them to the customer's taste. ( List of Clevo Resellers ) System Integrators such as Sager, Origin, XMG / Schenker, Metabox, Obsidian PC, Eurocom are among the most well-known in the world. MSI Custom Laptops and World MSI Resellers
sicily428 posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
MSI Custom laptops and World MSI Resellers MSI is for Micro-Star International and it is a taiwanese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer). They design and produce their laptops, mobile workstations, desktop pcs, motherboards and gpus. The most part of Brands like Dell, Alienware, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Gigabyte, Aorus are only OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) so they don't produce laptops. OEMs use barebones made by ODMs like Quanta, Compal, Clevo or also Pegatron and Foxconn. Old Alienware were Clevo's barebones until 2003 and now they are prodiuced by Compal. What is a custom laptop? It is a laptop in which you have the ability to choose how much RAM to put, to choose between what SSD / HDD or different panels, cpus and gpus. It is also useful to be able to take a barebone without disks and license. What's special? MSI uses MXM gpus for MSI GT62VR/GT72VR/GT73VR/GT75VR/GT83VR and 16L13. 16L13 is the atm the only MSI with a desktop cpu inside Advice on a gaming rig ~ $2000 +/- $500
Captain_Jack posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Alright, I've been doing some research, but some of you guys are clearly closer to this and have more relevant experience than I do, so I'd like to get your opinions and maybe some links if you have them. I'll try to lay it out pretty simple here. Use/budget: I'm not tied to a strict budget, but I don't think I can make myself spend 3 grand on a laptop, and I want the most value to dollar. I won't be a super heavy gamer on the laptop, but I want it to work when I ask it to, and I will be running virtual machines and I'm a power user that's built or repaired countless servers, desktops and laptops over the years. I'm trying to keep this closer to the $2000 mark, but if building it right costs $2500, that's what I'll have to do. Size/form factor: Most likely 15". Anything less is just way too small, but 17" still feels a bit big. This thing sits on my lap, plugged in, 95+% of the time. I'm already used to a 6.8lb Dell that almost never leaves it's metal meshed cooling station with fans, so a bit more weight probably won't bother me. I'm not married to 15", but 17" does need a good argument if I were to do that. Screen/Resolution: I wanted 4k, but after seeing some of the naysayers on here and the fact that many games will have issues with and more in the future will, I'm second guessing that. Frankly, I've been OK with 1080p gaming, it's really productivity and multiple windows open and visible that has made me want 4k more than anything else. Is there a good compromise in the middle? Does anybody know of a machine that has 1440p now or will in the next month or two? CPU: Core i7. Probably desktop, especially if it really has much more power than a mobile version. Don't know that I need the K iteration, I'm more in for the longevity of the entire laptop than a couple percentage points of gains from overclocking. If the vendor wants more than market rate and I get a desktop, I'll put this in myself. I'm already probably going to repaste the thing. GPU: 1070. I don't think the 1080 has enough performance to justify the premium, and I don't think I'm willing to take the performance hit of the 1060. RAM & HDDs: 32GB and 1tb M.2 and spinny. I'll probably get these on my own too. Most vendors seem to want to charge too much more than market rate. BIOS: I'd never heard of the Prema BIOS before, but this may be worth a bit of a premium. I've NEVER seen a decent laptop BIOS before, and a good and stable BIOS is worth something. Vendor: I've been leaning towards a Clevo reseller. They seem to have better price points and more design flexibility than the standard jokers (ASUS, MSI, etc.) Which reseller I haven't been able to nail down yet though. Bling/design: No. I hate those obnoxious colored beasts. If that's the only way to go to get what I want, then I'll swallow my pride and deal with with, but I'd rather have function over form. Easy access and build quality definitely are more important than looks. Other: Resolution has been my biggest internal battle. I haven't used higher resolutions yet, but 1080p feels small to me and I use 2-3 1080p monitors when not on a laptop. I'll wait if we'll see a 1440p or 3k monitor on the laptops in the next month or two. Or if the only way to do this is to buy a new screen and install it, I'll do that. I need help finding a compatible screen though. Also, I want this thing to have sufficient cooling. That's another reason I shy away from the 1080, it kind of looks like everybody is mostly just using the 970m and 980m cooling, which might not keep the video card from throttling. Thanks guys. -
I've had my $2800 (including tax & fees) MSI gt72s blah blah acronyms since October 2015, and the Steel Series keyboard is already failing (but externals work fine). The Space Bar, F key, and G key no longer work, and more may follow. I don't even use it very often, I plug in a mechanical. Warranty will cover it, and lasts until January 2018. But if I send it off, I probably won't have a computer when I start school again in June. Kind of a big deal since I'm going for Software Development. I'm thinking about selling it to my dad's company (not sure for how much yet) and downgrading to an Alienware 15 with the money, costing around $2000 (including tax), but I don't know what a fair price would be. Silver lining: it would be a little nicer to carry around a 15" rather than this 17" behemoth. Oh, and the graphics amp seems cool. The big issue here is not having a computer for school, and MSI says 10-25 business days, excluding shipping (Good God!). Has anyone else had experience with MSI costumer service? Or a similar issue with a similar laptop? And if I sell, how much would be fair ($2599 msrp)? Here are the options I'm considering: Option 1: Downgrade, basically lose money, but have a working computer soon enough. Option 2: Repair it under warranty, risk starting software development classes without a computer, and risk future issues. Option 3: Buy a stupid flexy keyboard and take it to class, keep buying a stupid new one when the stupid thing breaks because it's stupid, and still risk future issues if there's something seriously wrong. Option 4: ... Haven't thought of one yet, but I'm sure more exist.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it to a better forum mods. I'm looking for a high end desktop replacement gaming laptop, and have searched every website that I saw. The only two I saw that met the criteria I wanted was these two Asus Republic of Gamers http://store.asus.com/us/item/201506AM270000028/A19581 Alienware http://tinyurl.com/pd2ncrr Not sure which one to go with, looking for previous owners of either ASUS ROG laptops or alienware laptops, with over a year of ownership. They're both well within my budget; although the fact that Dell owns alienware is a major drawback. PS If you are suggesting a different laptop it must meet the following criteria: Charging port on the side Under 2k USD 250gb ssd +1tb 7200 rpm hdd gtx 970 quad core i7 Large design with good cooling 16gb ram (preferrably 1866, no lower than 1600) 1080p 17" screen Backlit keyboard

Hi all at the forum, I need some help with deciding what laptop to get or at least narrow down the choices. I am away at work most of the time and it takes me away from home where no desktop can go. With that being said i want to get a replacement desktop in a notebook form factor. I care about performance overall and also aesthetics is a factor meaning build quality and materials used. I like to get the best of the best! Off the top of my head here are some of the notebooks i have been looking at so far. Razer Blade 14 Asus ROG G751JY GS70 2QE Stealth Pro If you have any other contenders that rival these please do let me know. If possibly rate what you think would be the best laptop overall.

I'm looking into getting a laptop in January when my student loan comes in, and basically I'm struggling to find my ideal laptop. I'm studying Games Software Development at uni and need it to be as close to a desktop replacement as possible. Features I'm looking for include: Intel quad core 1080p IPS GTX 900 series (will settle for 800 series if the right laptop comes around) full size keyboard with numpad (backlit would be nice but not essential) SSD for OS HDD for programs blu ray drive would be nice but not essential LAN port would be nice but not essential I'm in the UK and have looked on sites such as eBuyer and Scan but I'm struggling to find the right one. I've even looked on custom sites like PC Specialist and they have great custom ones, but I'm stuck with either powerful and TN panel, or IPS and very low end GPU. I'm hoping by the time I come around to buying it the GTX 960M will be available but I'm struggling to find any news about that either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone! I am looking to buy a new device so that I can game on it. Currently I have a LG gram 14 2021 (pretty good machine) but its biggest drawback right now is that gaming (at 1080p) on this thing is pretty impossible. I started looking for a new pc (desktop or laptop) and I fumbled accros an "amazing" deal (I think). The catch here is that I live in Europe and the price of these products are higher than the US. So I spent some time, trying to list the necessary desktop components and I got a nice i5 12600k + rx 6700 xt with 32 gb of ram for 1300€. Then, I want to seek a laptop and I found my "dream" laptop the zephyrus g14 2022. Keep in mind that I am a studying CS and I do travel a lot in a daily basis (I do not know how did I end up like this), but the portability that the g14 offers its god for me. The sad part of the story is that it costs a 1500€ for the rx6700s + ryzen 6700hs config. So right now I ended up in a situation where I want a pc to game on, and I have 2 options: get a desktop or get the zephyrus and replace my LG gram 14. I think that the desktop is the better choice overall but I do feel like that the zephyrus might do better for me. I need help to decide.
