I, like many others, have received an email from Google Domains advising the transition to Squarespace will no longer support DDNS and to find an alternative before the transition. I'm still a bit new to self hosting stuff, so not sure what my best options are? Is it better to get a 3rd party DDNS to work on Squarespace or migrating to another domain provider that has DDNS? Currently I have my ASUS AX86U router doing the DDNS, but it only seems to support very limited DDNS providers. (image) Some of the sites I've looked up so far don't have a free tier with DDNS that I can use my existing domain on. Currently I use the DDNS to externally log into things on my network, like the router, SFTP on the NAS, Plex and other useful pages hosted from the NAS. As I said, I'm still learning all this web domain and name server stuff, so any tips/tricks for this would be appreciated. I have been looking up stuff via networkchuck and similar, but they all seem to be running things like this on Raspberry pi's or Linux servers. So I'm not sure how to translate that on the setup I currently have.

Hi everyone. I'm sorry for asking what is likely to be a very common question, but I've looked through a bunch of threads and couldn't get it to work, so I'm here asking for someone to basically hold my hand through the process I've set up a home server. Got TrueNAS Scale on it (Core did not support my RAID card). Local access is working fine. Now - I'm looking for a solution that does not involve a VPN. I'm looking to mount the storage pool directly to some machines that are all away from where the server is situated. This is a storage vault for non mission critical data, but we'd like regular access to it, as it's where we want to place off-jobsite backups as we are regularly on the road and want to get to the end of the day, do a local backup, then upload it all to the vault. I understand two ways of doing this would be by SMB sharing, WebDAV, or (s)FTP. As long as it works, I have no preference. I would like it to be accessible also through my browser, in case we want to send something in a pinch to a client, but this isn't something I'd necessarily need - can use Drive or Dropbox. Mounting the storage pool directly to the remote machines would be the most necessary part. In the past we used prebuilt NAS and we had an office so it was relatively more simple, as for remote access we could just use the WD or Synology apps. But I'm clearly failing at some point in the process between setting up the share configuration and port forwarding, as every time I've tried to check the port externally I've gotten back that it's not pointing to the correct place. As much as it pains me to say this, security is somewhat secondary, so I'm willing to compromise on that for ease of setup.

Hello, I am trying to setup a Truenas Scale server with Google Domains. I have the DDNS setup and tested that it is working I am having a hard time understanding how to setup a automated process that can renew SSL/TSS certs every month, If anyone has has any advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated. VPN is a future goal but am not ready yet for this.

This should be my final post on my FreeNAS saga. So I've been trying to get my NAS to be remote accessible via NextCloud through a DDNS but the DDNS only takes me to my router login. How would I go about routing the DDNS to go to my Nextcloud page on 192.168.0.48:8282? Router: CODA-4852 DDNS Service: afraid.org FreeNAS Version: 11.3-U3.1 Nextcloud Version: v21 If any additional information is needed just ask

So I just earlier tried adding a CNAME record or two ({*,hostname}.ddns.mydomain -> ddns.mydomain) to my Google Domain, and when I saved the GD page said "Up to 48h to take effect". Is it typically that long of a wait for that info to be up on ns-cloud-c<number>.google.com , or is it (hopefully) less?

Hello guys, I hope you are all doing fine, and I hope that I'm at the right place for this question. So, my question(elaborated) as stated above is that: How to access a home server sitting behind my router(ASUS RT-AC51U), using DDNS(ZoneEdit-Inbuilt DDNS service of my router) while I'm connected to a VPN server via OpenVPN client of the router itself? WHEN NOT CONNECTED TO VPN SERVER VIA OPENVPN CLIENT OF THE SERVER: I have a home server running with a local IP of 192.168.1.100, I have enabled port forwarding for this IP in my Asus router. So, when I access my DDNS Host Name i.e http://example.com, I get the website hosted at my local server(192.168.1.100) whose public IP is the IP address of my WAN which has PPPoE as connection type. WHEN CONNECTED TO VPN SERVER VIA OPENVPN CLIENT OF THE SERVER: I have a home server running with a local IP of 192.168.1.100, I have enabled port forwarding for this IP in my Asus router. So, when I access my DDNS Host Name i.e http://example.com,I do not get the website hosted at my local server(192.168.1.100) instead I just get ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, if I'm outside the network of my router. But if I'm accessing DDNS Host Name or my WAN IP within the network of my router, then I get the website running fine. So basically I want to know that what should I do in order to pass the Home server IP(192.168.1.100) through the WAN instead of VPN? PLEASE ASK FOR MORE INFO IF NEEDED. Thanks & Regards, DigiGoon

Hi, so I am trying to setup a FTP server from my Netgear router in order to use online functionality of a game. I want to set this up on my router (Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000) because that I already have a 2tb drive hooked up to it, and I don't have any server PCs or PCs that I run 24/7 to host the game files. I tried following all of the instructions from here and here, but I keep getting stuck on setting up the DDNS. I tried first setting it up through the netgear router utility - After filling out all of those fields, a message popped up saying it was successfully registered. However, when I try to sign on to the account, I get the message "Unable to complete the job, reason; Unable to locate hostname in your account. However, when I click manage account, the DDNS service shows up as active, and is even successfully retrieving the IP Addresses. I even created another hostname and tried to sign into that hostname through the no-ip option in the netgear utility, but that also did not work, although that did not produce an error message, just nothing happened. Is there something I am doing wrong? All I am trying to do is create a globally accessible FTP server that I can then input into a game (Out of the park baseball 17) so that I can play online multiplayer with my friends. If there is an easier way of doing this or anything, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks!

OK, so after much work I finally got my home server on Debian working as a file server, and now I'm curious how I could set it up so that I can access it even while not on my home network. I looked into DDNS at first but... My router, or should I say gateway, doesn't support it unless I put newer firmware on it, and the only freaking possible way you can put newer firmware on it is through my ISP, and the only reason they might do it is if my internet connection won't work unless they update the firmware. Great. So I was looking into setting up a VPN (which would be handy anyways since if I ever go to China again (My mom is Chinese) it could come in useful) but I'm not entirely sure if that will work to access files on the file server so I came to you guys. Also I'm not too certain about SSH but if SSH requires support from the router then that's not happening since I can't find a setting anywhere in the router that is about SSH. Thanks guys for the help!

So I'm trying to set up a home file server so that it can be accessed from anywhere (I already got it set up so that you can access it from anywhere on the network but still working on outside of the network) and I was following this guide and it told be to configure DDNS on my router. So I logged into my router (which is an SBG6580) but when I went to the part where it tells you the DDNS service and there's a little thing where you select if it's disabled or enabled or whatever the only option was disabled... There literally was no other option... Wat. Here's what it looks like: And then when I go to select something: Anyone have any idea of what to do?

Hi Everyone! I have a Windows Server AD Domain with DNS running at my main site (main.example.com). I have another site with a public IP address that dynamically changes (secondary.example.com). I want a DNS entry in place on the main site for secondary.example.com, but I often have to manually update the record to include the correct IP whenever the second site gets a new IP. Is there a solution to this? I thought of somehow allowing the router on the second site to connect the the main site's DNS server and update it's record automatically whenever it's IP changes (basically Dynamic DNS) but I don't know whether you can do this with Windows Server's DNS server. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi all, I have made a Minecraft Server and I am having my friends join using my Dynamic DNS server (NoIP) which point to my public IP address which is synced from my router. But my question is I’ve heard that sharing your public IP address is unsafe, but what about using a DDNS, is that safe to share semi-publicly? When I say semi-publicly I mean I will give it to a small Discord Server I’m in with people I don’t know - if that makes sense! Thank you, Nic.

Im going to be getting an older lenovo think station used as a server from a friend thats giving it to me in turn for setting up a plex server for him on it. Along with a plex server i want to set up an xmpp server, a mail server(going to mention a domain) and host a few occasional game servers as well as a plain storage server i can access from school on my laptop or remote into a virtual machine when i need more power than my lenovo t410. I was also thinking about buying a domain since i can get ones i like for around $6 a year, however since im doing this from home and have a dynamic public ip i recognize i need to use a DDNS, i was planing on using dyn.com but have never done anything with servers or domains apart from my MTA in server administration in high school. If i buy a domain from somewhere like domain.com how do i go about setting up the DDNS for it using dyndns? And if anyone can get me some useful information on SRV Records and how to set them up that would be great too. Server is a lenovo thinkstation, dont know the exact specs at the moment but i will be running Windows Server 2016.

Apologies in advance if this isn't the correct forum for this question; it seemed like the one closest to the topic at hand. So I currently have a couple of programs on my server which can be accessible locally by localhost:portnumber. I have also set up a DDNS with Google Domains that forwards a subdomain my public IP, and I can access these resources via subdomain.com:portnumber. Here's where I'm struggling. I recently found out about CNAMEs, which, if my understanding is correct, will allow me to create a subdomain to redirect to a URL and keep the same page structure. However, CNAMEs can't be mapped to a URL with a port. So I have to use a reverse proxy to intercept the incoming traffic, find out what URL was used to access the network, and forward based off that information. However, I have no idea how to do that. This kind of stuff is just my hobby, so I have consumer grade networking (3 AirPort Extremes) behind consumer grade ISP. My server is an Xserve 2,1 running macOS 10.12 with macOS Server installed. If anyone has any insight or experience on how to do this, I would really appreciate it! Sorry if I was using the wrong terminology or am not clear on what I am trying to do; this is a hobby of mine that I'm just starting to delve deeper into since I might want do go into this field after college. Thanks!

OK, so I'm trying to set up my Google Domains records so that *.ddns.mydomain is privately resolvable inside my network and publicly to the A record associated with the bare ddns.mydomain FQDN set up with Google Domain's DDNS synthetic records. In theory, all I should need to do is create an appropriately formated CNAME record for the * subdomain right? 'cause I've done that and I can't get it to resolve from querying the Google Domains nameservers. Fixed: had to have the CNAME for *.ddns to point to ddns.mydomain

So... The second post I made looking for help today... I feel wrong. This isn't how I'm supposed to work. I'm supposed to fix other people's problems!!! Anyways, here's what's going on: I have a server which I want to use for development, mainly. So I want ssh access to it from anywhere. I also may spin up a website on it, and some other tools on various ports. Setting that up on the server isn't hard. set those ports to listen, start the services, whatever. So i have done that, (at least for sshd) I set up a dynamic dns service for my router. I have had an account for a long time with noip, but my router integrates with dlinkddns, so i set that up so i don't have to run a program to update the dns provider at all when my IP changes. I have an address from them, and set that up in my router. I also forwarded the ports I need for the reserved IP of my server. I can ssh into that server from anywhere using the ddns as the hostname. So this works. The issue comes when I try to use my own domain that I purchased to do the same thing. I purchased a domain from squarespace (cause I wanted to give a certain content creator a little kickback or at least partner satisfaction), and I plan to use that domain as the domain to access my server. Now, I have tried a bunch of configuration options on there... but nothing has worked frankly. If someone is willing to help, i'll be glad to share what i've tried so far (to the best extent my memory will allow), but if anyone simply knows how to do this and can tell me, I would be the giddiest of posters Thanks, pre-emptively!

so i was reading online on ways to use port forwarding of port 80 and port 443 when the ISP has blocked them. bumped into DDNS which according to what i understood can dodge the restriction by ISP and forward the ports to remote accessing. i added the DDNS to my router and i set up port 80 and 443 to forward to the IP address of my PC. I tried if this port was open using portchecktool.com and the port checker within NO-IP and both of them showed that port 80 and 443 as blocked. i even added these ports to firewall by making inbound rule but it still didnt work. im clueless about what is causing this error and im wondering if my understanding about getting over ISP restriction in DDNS is incorrect. it would be great help if someone can point out if im making a mistake or maybe suggest things to check for further troubleshooting. Thank you

While trying to use a VPN connection on my Ubuntu server, I found out that when launching my OpenVPN client with : sudo openvpn --config someplace.ovpn it makes all my remote services unavailable : my TS3 server, my plex server, my qbittorrent webui and some other minor stuff. Of course I can reach them from within my network with192.168.X.X:someport, but not from outside with my outside.ddns.net:someport. I realized after trying to resolve the issue, that my noip client was updating the ddns from myisp IP to the VPN IP, but even if I disable the noip client and ensure that the X.ddns.net stays on my ISP ip, my services are not reachable. What I would like to know is how to configure my server, vpn service, ddns, ... to have access to my plex server with X.ddns.net:plexport, my torrent webui with X.ddns.net:qbtport, etc ... while using the VPN service. Or if it's not possible, how to only use some traffic through the VPN (for example plex and TS3 server don't go through VPN, qbittorrent yes). I've read a lot of stuff with iptables and what not, but I've never found a clear and easy answer. I can understand that if all traffic directed at X.ddns.net arrives at my VPN IP, their server while not know what to do with some request to port 32400 (which is default for plex media server). What I don't understand is why it doesn't work when I have the X.ddns.net point to my ISP IP, meaning it gets to my router which knowns everything to route those requests (port forwarding rules working).

Hey guys im wondering if anyone can help me im trying to setup a ts3 server which is installed and i can connect via local ip. but im trying to tunnel it through a DLink 2750u router using DlinkDDNS but cant see it i've tried everything i have manually set the server machine to the DMZ that didnt work i have tried Port forwarding ports 9788, 10011, 30011, this machine i also want to setup a XAMPP server to host a gaming website.. Hey guys, So I have a somewhat non-standard setup that is giving us some issues. This has to do with work and much of the information is confidential and thus I cannot share some specifics, but I'll do my best to lay out everything. Okay so the equipment involved: 1. ABB PLC w/ WebServer (Model AC564-R-ETH) - connected via ethernet to local router 2. Router on LAN - DIR-632 3. Dynamic DNS service - No-ip.org xxx.myftp.org (where xxx represents our subdomain) 4. External client access (Windows XP SP3 computer on an ASUS RT-AC66U router) The ABB PLC is using internal network IP: 192.168.2.99, with the integrated webserver on port 80 (As per usual). The webserver page is located at /webvisu.htm. I have the DIR-632 configured to access the No-ip.org service and update the Dynamic DNS records there (The free domain address from No-ip.org routes to our dynamic WAN IP Address from the ISP). The DIR-632 also has port forwarding enabled for the PLC IP Address and port 80. So in theory it should redirect to the PLC. I can access the web server page from within the internal network on BOTH the LAN IP Address, as well as the ddns domain address (using both 192.168.2.99/webvisu.htm and xxx.myftp.org/webvisu.htm). When attempting to access the Web Server from the external client computer (xxx.myftp.org/webvisu.htm), it immediately loads HTTP 404 error and cannot find the site. It also doesn't try for very long to locate the site. It's literally a few milliseconds (Half a second tops) before it loads the 404 error. We have a network enabled KGuard DVR that also has a web server for remote viewing (Type in the DVR IP Address in your browser and it'll allow remote viewing and limited control via a web interface). When I type in the no-ip root domain address, I can access the DVR (typing in just xxx.myftp.org). It's supposed to be using a different port though (port 37777), but I don't need to type the port number into the browser for it to access. I have also tried typing in the direct WAN IP Address that the network the PLC is on is using, and it acts the exact same way as if using the No-Ip.org redirect. I can access the DVR using the root, but I cannot access the PLC Web Server at /webvisu.htm. I feel like there must be something stupid or simple blocking access, but I cannot find it for the life of me. Can I get some help please ASAP? Please ask if you need additional info, and keep in mind things like the specific IP Addresses I may not be able to disclose.

Hi guys! I was wondering what Dynamic DNS service you use? I have chosen No-IP as I have used them for them for the past 2 years and I feel that they are great, never had any problems.Their support is also amazing. Thanks Sheldon
