I have zero experience in audio and have only used headsets previously. But as my headset has died I thought I'd dive into something more high end. This is the list of things I've liked the look of so far. Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z. I want closed back so I don't get leakage into the mic. (I've heard thats what happens with open back), they were recommended by a mate. DAC - Maverick Audio TubeMagic D1 Plus DAC. The D1 Plus has 3 different models https://www.mav-audio.com/store/index.php/dac.html (Was recommended by the same mate) Mic - Rode PodMic. Want a dynamic mic as apparently condensor will pick up keyboard typing and mouse clicking sounds. Wanted to go XLR because apparently its easier to muck around with and do different silly things to your voice. Mic XLR interface - No idea. If I'm way off base with any of this stuff or you have another suggestion please let me know. Also suggestions for the mic XLR interface are appreciated. Cheers.

I bought a new DAC/AMP Fiio K3 (2021), this is my first DAC/AMP, I never used anything like this before. I noticed that it skips small sounds in macOS like deleting a file, emptying trash, error bell in the terminal, posting a tweet, etc. same thing happens on Windows and Linus also, it's just more noticeable in macOS because it has sounds in its UI for a number of things. I did some troubleshooting and these are my Observations: 1. I found out that it skips the sound specifically when there is a short stream of audio like what I mentioned before. 2. If there are many sounds coming in a queue it will miss the first sound and then accurately plays all sounds in a queue without any lag. 3. If I am playing music, there is a continuous sound stream continuously going into the computer's device; it doesn't skip anything. 4. If nothing is going into the DAC for 1 or 2 mins, then if I start some music then it will skip some microseconds of that song and then plays the whole song without any issue. My Conclusion: DAC turns itself off for power-saving mode if we don't use it for some time, I don't know why. because it's a desktop device that doesn't have any batteries in it, it's connected the whole time to the computer or a laptop. I don't think it's the delay of signal because it needs to travel from computer to DAC from a wire or a dongle because after that skipping it plays everything without lag even if you game on it there is close to no lag in competitive games also. My Questions: 1. Is my conclusion make any sense? 2. Why is this happening? 3. Is it normal? 4. Why it doesn't happen when we use the onboard DAC of a motherboard or a laptop? Thanks in advance!

Title says it all. My brother had a pair of these and they sounded amazing. Was wondering if they would be great for gaming? Also, any recommendations for a DAC/AMP compatible with this headset would be great! Thanks!

Hey, i'm currently in the market for a new pair of gaming headphones, and have decided to go down the separate headphones and mic route. i would be looking at a pair of DT 990's with a ModMic 4/5. my main problem however is that i would really like to keep the mic loop-back feature that my current Plantronics RIG headset has. my plan is to get an adaptor like this http://www.misco.co.uk/product/198034?affiliate=GOOGLEPLA&cm_mmc=google-_-Product_PlusBox-_--_-198034&gclid=Cj0KEQjw4cLKBRCZmNTvyovvj-4BEiQAl_sgQmjPkGFr3g-0y01R7DlP0R_wtLjXoSdTP2CssNz2tDIaAnGS8P8HAQ and plug both the dt990 and the modmic into the headset port on the RIG to provide the same loop back. I believe that the RIG mixer acts like a DAC because the output from the pc is a USB (digital) and the output is 3.5mm 4pin (analogue) and to my knowledge is also a AMP due to the ability to change the volume. I've done quite a lot of online research into using the RIG mixer as a DAC/AMP that would also allow for hardware mic loop-back but found almost nothing. would this work, and if so, approximately how much quality would i sacrifice by doing this. also that would be the best OMH resistance to buy the dt990's in for such a setup. many thanks

I'm just getting into the high end audio world.... I need some advice. I play most of my audio through my pc, which has this motherboard with built in audio - https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-IX-CODE/ On my pc I usually wear this to game and talk to people with (Also listen to music with it.) - https://www.amazon.ca/HyperX-Cloud-Gaming-Headset-PS4/dp/B00SAYCVTQ When I'm not playing games or talking to people I usually switch my headset and listen to my music with these - https://www.amazon.com/Beats-Pro-Over-Ear-Wired-Headphone/dp/B008CQWPHU?th=1 I'm getting a new set of headphones and I really want the best audio I can get from them. These are the headphones I want to purchase - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00DCXWXEI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2HUORJGDC60X4&coliid=I23AZEFEIV10FA This the DAC/AMP I was thinking of purchasing (For the price on its current sale it seems good, as at full price Youtube reviews say its amazing) - http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX54668 So Will I be happy with my new DAC and headphones? are they completely compatible? I just want to plug the dac into my pc and my headphones into the dac and have a good audio experience. I know this dac has a lot of extra features, but is it good enough? I just want barebones features. Just want to power my headphones and have crystal clear sound! Sorry for such a long and complicated post. Any help is very appreciated! <333

Greetings,I am looking for a portable DAC/amp recommendation for driving my Beyerdynamic 250 ohms headphones. At home, I use a Soundblaster Omni surround with my MacBook pro. But I am looking for something that is portable, that I can use with iPhone XS max as well as my work laptop (MacBook air) at the workplace or when I am walking around, so it should be portable and easier to put into pocket/carry.My budget is around 100-150 USD and I reside in Vancouver, Canada. So amazon.ca or eBay I think will be my source for purchase.Do you guys have any recommendation? Thanks

Im looking into buying a Dac/Amp combo and my budget is tight. Im currently running my AKG m220 pros off of my crappy onboard audio and im not really satasfied with that. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LP3AMC2/?coliid=I1GMGUK0S836F9&colid=1GGCK7MK2E298&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it - Fiio E10K https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072JJT7SF/?coliid=IQAUVRALYMDQO&colid=1GGCK7MK2E298&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it - FX Audio DAC-X6 It seems that the dac-x6 is both better sounding and cheaper, but it also has to plug into the wall which is kind of a shame, unlike the e10k which is usb powered. Any help would be appreciated!

I've been looking at getting the 58x jubilee headphones for my xbox and was wanting to get an amp to boost the power of them as well. I could only find the astro amp, I was wondering if there was something cheaper that would work just as well. If I need to get extra cables as well that's fine.

Hello, I'm an audio noob so I need some help with choosing the right dac/amp and some good closed back headphones. I've read the The Audio Board's Recommended Gear and Before you buy amp and DAC + recommendations topics and they helped me only a bit. The reason I want a DAC is that I'm getting tired of the hissing sound in my Cloud IIs and the reason I want and an AMP is that I want to buy better headphones soon. I chose the Topping NX4 DSD because I like its specs a lot and maybe I'll sometimes use it on the go too. The problem s that I will use it with pc probably 95% of the time so I want to know how reasonable it is to purchase a small portable amp/dac just to use it on PC. I looked into the Schiit Fulla 2 but it has worse specs than the Topping and would cost me just as much if not more. I would greatly appreciate other suggestions. The headphones i would like to upgrade to are most probably the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 or maybe something more expensive like the Oppo PM-3, Shure SRH1540 or Beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO. With these I would like to know how much of an upgrade it i from the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 to the more expensive ones and if it's worth twice as much money. Recommendations for other good closed back headphones in the 200€ to 500€ range would be very much appreciated too.

What would be a good Dac/amp combo for the DT770 250 ohms. I am looking to pair these with a modmic for gaming.

Hi guys! So let me just give you guys a bit of a back story on my audio. So I currently have a high-end laptop for gaming that I'm about to replace with a desktop. The desktop has the z370 Maximus Hero wit h " Industry-leading 8-channel HD audio with dual headphone amplifiers and ROG exclusive SupremeFX S1220 CODEC driven by Japanese capacitors." I currently use an older gaming headset which I despise which I am going to replace with a AD900x. I don't know how the onboard audio will sound. I mainly game and stream, usually listening to music in the background while playing, depending on how competitive the game I'm playing is. So my question is, how good is the onboard audio compared to using the Fulla 2? And will I even need a DAC/AMP combo? If not, how good is the onboard audio compared to the Magni 3? (I know it's just an amp) Thanks for all your help! (My budget is around 100 dollars, and I don't have to spend it on a AMP/DAC, so if it's not worth it please tell me)

The SMSL M3 (ending soon) and FX Audio DAC-X6 are both currently on Massdrop at about the same price. I would like to know which of the two sounds better. Power does not matter much since the two headphones I'm using are 150 ohms and 50 ohms. Thanks in advance.

I'm a gamer and I do like my music/movies but so far I've used a Fulla 2 and an M2 and I'm very unhappy while gaming with my cans as I can't hear footsteps until they're on top of me. My friends using M50x's with a Fiio E10k and pinpoints much better than I do. I'm looking for advice and direction. Thanks in advance, VVord

I'm not really an audio expert so please bear with my terms. So i recently found out about the m1060. And i decided that these headphones will be my "Gaming Headphones". The question is, If these headphones need a Dac/Amp to get a better sound quality. Which Dac/Amp would that be? And also if you have another recommendation for another great headphone which has good sound quality and can make footsteps noticeable and can make you feel like you're actually in the game (ex. you can feel the feelings of the music) , It will be very much appreciated.

I am planning on buying new gear for my gaming setup and have a couple questions before I purchase everything and am all confused when I try to set it up. So i am planning on buying: Headphones: sennheiser hd598 Mic: Audio Technica At2020 xlr version Those two things are the only things i am for sure I know i am buying but the rest is where i am not sure on. I was planning on getting the schiit stack (magni2 and modi2) to help get clean audio for the headphones unlike what i have now. I am wondering do I need both because someone told me I just need the Dac part. Also how would I connect them to the PC will I just plug them into the PC and not the mixer or should I connect it to the mixer as well? I know i need a mixer and i was going to get the Behringer XENYX502 or the Behringer Xenyx 802 Premium 8-Input 2-Bus Mixer. I want to be able to play music through the mixer into the computer but i am not sure if i am able to with the 502. If I am then I was going to get the 502 but if i can't then i was going to get the 802. any help would be appreciated.

I am not willing to spend over 450 and i'm not asking for best at around 450 i'm just asking for the best in different price ranges since i'm going to have money that i might throw into other things and just want to know my best options at each price level. I like listening to music and i play a lot of shooters and rpgs and have some headphones that recommend a amp since with on board it doesn't sound bad just kinda low. I have also herd from people that virtual surround is really good for competitive play and that its best to have it as a main feature for the sound card since i never seen DACs advertise stuff like that. But i font really know and just want to have your guys input since i'm relatively new to this. BTW i do plan on getting a good pair of headphones later on but not now just in case some people tell me to go for that for sound quality since i know its a big factor too.

I am having a strange issue within the past two days. I have the Fiio E10 Dac/Amp and for some reason with audio level above 60%, in windows, there is an, ungodly, amount of static and distortion. It almost sounds like its being over amplified. This is the case no matter the application; through MusicBee, Google Play, youtube. Even tried Internet Explorer, instead of chrome, just to be safe on the music streaming. Yet, my onboard Realtek audio sounds peachy, no issues (just lack of power, to be expected). To see if it was Fiio E10 or windows I booted into Ubuntu 14 live usb and loaded it up and it worked fine. The only issues I found was that when it was plugged into my Rosewill RC-229U4 PCI-Express 2.0 x1 USB 3.0 Controller Card the spdif output for it sounded very low and underpowered (but not distorted); the analog output worked great. So I switched it to motherboard usb 3.0 slots, even the front i/o on my case, and that problem was resolved. I even unplugged the E10 and hooked it up to a laptop I had around and it sounded great. Going back to windows the problem didn't go away, high levels of distortion above 60% volume. At 60% windows volume I had to have the E10 on high gain between 6 and 7, for my He-400s to be sufficiently powered; while normally I have it at high gain of 4 for causal volume levels. I tried changing the audio format from 24bit 96k to 16bit 44.1k, nothing. Tried uninstall the drivers and reinstalling them, nothing. Tried disabling all of my audio devices (Sound Blaster z, Realtek onboard Audio, graphics card audio drivers), nothing. I used a latency program, dpclat, to check for latency issues. It is at a steady 1000us. I tried disabling all hardware monitoring programs (Processes Explorer and HWiNFO64) and audio devices and applications, latency didn't change. I notice it after I was playing Call of Duty: World At War and I was getting crashes during Zombies matches (extremely frustrating). I looked up crashes for World at War and discovered audio drivers and settings are the main cause. So I thought it was the Equalizer APO program I installed the other week (Worked flawlessly for what I wanted it for, adding low end without distortion up the mids and highs). I uninstalled it and noticed later that day that the audio was screwed up. I want to say this was the cause, yet can't get it resolved, no matter how many times I install and uninstall the program. Does anyone have suggestions? -Thank You. System Specs: Xeon E3 1230v3 Asus Z87 A Motherboard Nvidia GeForce 660 Ti Sound Blaster Z
